FARM ATTACK SURVIVOR appeals to police to prioritise cases ANDILE SITHOLE >>Andile.sithole@media24.com A KZN woman who survived when armed suspects stormed her home at Marchmont Farm last week has called on the police to prioritise farm attack cases. She called on them to ensure that there is law and order with strong consequences against crime in South Africa. The 34-year-old woman from Dalton, near Greytown, who asked to remain anonymous, was tied up with a charger cord around her arms and feet, pushed around her house and left in an empty room. Two domestic workers also were forced to lie down on the floor while the six armed intruders ransacked the house. In an exclusive interview with the Gazette, the woman said she woke up last Thursday morning and opened the back door to let the dogs outside, and that was when the gunmen entered. “They just walked right in through that door. It was dreadful and I couldn’t believe that this was happening. They walked right into my room where I was at the time. They put a gun to my head and raided my room
for valuables. “I began to pray to Jesus. I asked Him to help me, to give me strength and courage. They grabbed me by the arm and took me to the dining room. Then they demanded to know where my father’s room was. I took them there and they wanted the safe. “When they saw the safe, they took me back to my room, pushed me to the floor and tied my hands with a charger cord and my feet with what seemed like a shoelace. “They had made the two domestic workers lie on the floor. “I still thought they would come back and finish me off but I had peace knowing that I belonged to the Lord so if they did kill me I would go to be with Him. “Then suddenly it occurred to me that I wasn’t bound up very well and I was able to loosen the cords and escape. I couldn’t hear them any more so I sprinted to the dam below our house and hid in the tall, overgrown reeds. I don’t know if the intruders were still in the house or not but I didn’t see them again,” she said. Meanwhile the alarm was raised and whilst in hiding, the woman said she heard a vehicle driving towards the house. “Then I heard two gun shots and I thought
they had shot my brother. A few minutes later I heard my other brother frantically calling for me. I was relieved to know he was looking for me but was still worried that someone was going to get hurt so I kept quiet until I heard the security guys and I felt it was safe to come out. “After the robbers had fled the scene, my very kind neighbour came to fetch me and took me to her home. I was so grateful and amazed at how quickly the farmers were arriving. Within a few minutes the whole community was there, it seemed,” she said. The family run a sugar cane and poultry farm in Dalton area. The woman said her parents and her brothers were away when the robbers struck.
