SUICIDE in police cells ANDILE SITHOLE >>Andile.sithole@media24.com ONE of the suspects arrested for the murder of a 77-year-old Matimatolo woman, who was apparently killed for her social grant, has allegedly committed suicide in the police cell in Greytown.

There was confusion outside the Greytown Magistrate’s Court on Monday as he and a second suspect, the daughter of the victim, had been expected to appear for a bail application. It is believed the suspect, said to be the second suspect’s boyfriend, used his T-shirt to hang himself on Sunday. Disgruntled residents from Matimatolo, near Greytown, protested outside the court calling for the remaining suspect to be denied bail.

The suspects were arrested at their home in Matimatolo on September 10.

The police could not comment on whether the surviving suspect would be released.

The Gazette established that the first suspect had given the police a statement with the details of the murder.

The victim Lindeni Cele was attacked in her home on August 30, and robbed of her grant. She was found lying in a pool of blood in front of her house with her throat slit.

Her brother Gedleyihlekisa Cele was among residents outside court calling for the suspect to be given a heavy sentence.

He said: “When we arrived in court, we were told that her boyfriend hanged himself in the police cells. He is a coward, he should have waited for the law to take its course.

“She must not be granted bail. We want the court to give her a heavy sentence for what she did to my sister,” said Cele.

Another family member, Xhawulile Ndlovu, echoed Cele’s sentiments. “We are in court to oppose the bail application for the suspect. The community of Matimatolo is baying for her blood. She should not be grant-

ed bail because the community is disgusted for what she did to the old woman,” she said.

A community leader, Gcinokwakhe Gumede, urged the residents to unite and fight against gender-based violence.

Gumede also urged the community leaders to form community policing forums in their wards.

KZN police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said: “[On Sunday] the 50-year-old suspect was found hanging in the police cells.

“An inquest docket was opened at Greytown police station for investigation. The circumstances around the incident are being investigated.”

Armed men rob Kranskop Post Office ANDILE SITHOLE >>Andile.sithole@media24.com FOUR suspects pretending to be customers held the branch manager of Kranskop Post Office at gun point demanding money. They managed to take cash that was transferred to the counter.

SAPS are investigating the incidence.

Spokesperson for SA Post Office Nobuhle Njapha said: “Customers can access their grant and other services in Greytown or Maphumulo Post Offices. Trauma debriefing has been arranged for employees on site.

“The Post Office is well advanced

with rolling out a programme to improve security at its branches.”

Hawks spokesperson Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo did not respond on emails and WhatsApp messages sent by the Gazette.

Police recover stolen cows POLICE officers from the Stock Theft Multi-District Task Team conducted operations within the Zululand, Mzinyathi and Amajuba districts to curb theft of livestock, recover stolen livestock and arrest the thieves.

The operation led to the arrest of two men, aged 30 and 53, and the recovery of 35 cattle. The suspects were arrested and they are in custody.

A 30-year-old man was arrested for stock theft cases that occurred on August 19, where cattle were stolen from a farm in Vryheid. During the investigation, police recovered 11 stolen cattle and the investigation linked the suspect to cases of stock theft that were reported in December 2018 in the Kingsley policing area.

Police proceeded to a place in Kingsley where they arrested a 53year-old man and recovered 24 cattle. These cattle were stolen from two farms between December 6 and 10, 2018 in Kingsley. Both suspects were charged for stock theft and they appeared in the Utrecht Magistrate’s Court on September 11.

Sassa launches online grant application portal FROM Monday, September 14 social grant applicants will be able to apply for certain social grants online. The pilot project will at this stage cover the child support, older persons, and foster child grants. Applications can be lodged on https://services.sassa.gov.za which is a secure website. After reviewing the system other grants will also be added to the portal.

This should be a relief to grant applicants as it will save them the inconvenience of standing in queues at South African Social Security Agency(Sassa) offices in order to apply for their grants.

The added advantage is that the convenience of online applications eliminates the risk of being infected with the Covid-19 virus because there will be no need to gather at public places in order to apply.

This remote self-service will be possible on both a computer and a mobile phone. The turnaround time is 10 days, provided the applicant supplies all the stipulated documents such as identity documents of applicant and spouse as well as banking details among

others.

This will enable access to the following Sassa services: >Applications for grants for foster child grant, older persons grant and child support grant >Online submission of the required supporting documentation linked to the application >Change of circumstances (payment method, banking details, address) >Status of application To access this service, applicants need to have an email address to sign up and to be able to login for further services.

Feedback to applicants will be sent through SMS notification to applicants with no email addresses and an email response will be sent to applicants choosing to be contacted by email. A receipt will be generated when the application is completed.

The testing of the system will run from until September 25. It is important to note that required supporting documents to be attached must be certified.

Sassa launches online grant application.

Three men arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms THREE suspects were arrested for possession of three unlicensed pistols in Dalton on Sunday, September 13.

Police officers attached to the Port Shepstone Public Order Police Unit embarked on an intelligence driven operation in Dalton that started on Sunday from 10pm to 4am on September 14.

Four unlicensed firearms were seized at different homesteads in Dalton.

The team went to four homesteads at various areas such as Njengabantu,

Mount Ellias and Jikijiki where three suspects aged between 27 and 35 were placed under arrest after they were found in possession of three pistols. A total 29 rounds of ammunition were also recovered by the police.

KZN police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said: “The team proceeded to a fourth homestead at the same area where the suspect ran away upon seeing the police officers. At the suspect’s premises, the police found a pistol with 19

rounds of ammunition.”

The suspects were expected to appear before the New Hanover Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula said: “The use of illegal firearms contributes to crimes being committed and innocent lives being lost. These operations will continue to curb the proliferation of illegal firearms in the province.”

Greytown orphans appeal Call for security for RDP house from council guard at Greytown cemeteries

ANDILE SITHOLE >>Andile.sithole@media24.com FIVE orphans from Nkonyane, near Greytown, have appealed to the uMvoti Local Municipality to provide them with a RDP house.

They have been living in a single room since their home was gutted by fire in June.

The eldest daughter Mandisa Zuke (23) said she had been looking after her four siblings since their parents died some years ago.

She told The Gazette that their father died in 2014 after a short illness.

“Our lives got even worse when my mother passed away in 2015.

Since then, we have been staying alone.

“When the fire started in the first incident, we managed to extinguish the flames. On the second incident in June we were not able to remove our clothes as the flames spread rapidly throughout the house.

“We suspect that someone threw a petrol bomb into our house. We lost everything that was in the house. Sometimes we go to bed hungry,” Zuke said.

“Shelter is the most important thing that we need as this stage. We rely on donations that we receive from neighbours.”

Foster care parent Dudu Mazibuko said the children are in desperate need of shelter.

“When they came knocking at my door, I opened my hands and allowed them to stay with me. It’s

Ward councillor Zwakushiwo Ndlovu said uMvoti Local Municipality is in the process of providing shelter to disadvantaged children.

“Upon my visit to the family, the

children were sharing a one-room house that is falling apart. The cause of the fire is still unknown.

We are doing our best to get them a proper house,” he said.

Ndlovu said the municipality was in negotiations with the traditional leaders in the area in a bid to find a place to accommodate the family.

THE destruction and theft of granite tombstones at burial sites in Greytown has left families devastated.

Tombstones and granite slabs are either removed or dismantled. The destruction of graves in Greytown is now affecting Gijima – a new burial site that belongs to uMvoti Local Municipality. According to the family members, vandalism started at the old Greytown Cemetery.

A heartbroken family member of the two people whose graves were vandalised at Gijima Cemetery said she is upset that vandals continue removing the tombstones at the cemetery.

Nokuthula Mlangeni said the two tombstones with a value of more than R20 000 were dismantled with an unknown object. Mlangeni said the two graves that were vandalised belongs to her late mother Ntombizonke Mlangeni and her aunt Zanele Mlangeni.

“The aluminium that was used in the grave was removed. The tombstones in both graves were also vandalised. It worries me a lot to see my mother’s grave in this bad condition. There should be a security guard at the cemetery so that such incidents will be curbed,” he said.

“I have spent R39 000 to buy a tombstone for my sister. We suspect that the people vandalising the burial site only target graves with expensive tombstones.

“These stolen items from the graves are being used for commercial resale.

“I have not replaced the stolen items because the site is insecure and unguarded. The municipality must deploy a security guard at the cemetery,” Zakwe said.

Spokesperson for uMvoti Municipality Phindile Phungula said a security guard had been previously deployed at the cemetery.

“Unfortunately, the theft of the security hut that was used as shelter for the security guard caused a hinderance and a safety hazard. In a bid to finalise the placing of a guard’s house at the cemetery, the municipality had to explore the avenue of hiring a crane that would assist in lifting the guard’s house. An advert was placed, but the process was delayed by the non-responsiveness of service providers to the municipal advert.

“To date there has been progress on the process as three quotations have since been received and the order will be issued,” Phungula said.

Workplace health and safety remains a priority THE relaxation of lockdown regulations and the gradual reopening of more parts of the South African economy does not remove the need for strict workplace health and safety measures. Employers should make sure that they have proper systems in place, to keep their teams and customers healthy and to be able to respond appropriately if a coronavirus infection is confirmed.

“Large numbers of South Africans have been able to return to work which means that bigger groups are now spending time in close proximity with each other. This makes it critical to ensure that their workspaces are properly cleansed and that hygiene measures are kept at the highest possible level to prevent the possible transmission of the virus. The risk of possible infection can be greatly reduced if everyone continues to follow the rules and remain alert,” said Fidelity Services Group CEO, Wahl Bartmann.

Combine this with other communication measures such as offering guidance from occupational health and safety officers, briefings at internal meetings, and information on intranet sites to promote hand-washing • Ensure that face masks or paper tissues are available for everyone at your workplace, along with closed bins that allow for its hygienic disposal. Face masks and paper tissues are especially important for those who develop a runny nose or cough at work • Encourage video conferencing or confer-

ence calls – While the country works to spread the further spread of the coronavirus, it is better to avoid contact meetings if this is at all feasible • Make sure your workplaces are clean and hygienic – Surfaces that are touched regularly (such as door handles, desks, tables, phones and keyboards) need to be wiped down and disinfected regularly with an approved QAC or sanitizing product. You must ensure products used are SANS 1828 and NCRS approved • Promote regular and thorough handwashing by employees, contractors, and customers – Put sanitising hand rub dispensers in prominent places around the workplace. Make sure these dispensers are regularly refilled with approved products.

• Prepare for the best, but plan for the worst – Ensure that you have accurate contact details for any employee or visitor on hand, so that everyone could be contacted in case of an infection that occurs to anyone that visited your workplace. Allocate a room or a space where anyone that possibly thinks they have fallen ill, can be kept isolated until they can safely be transported for medical treatment if this becomes necessary • Proper disposal of PPE equipment / Environmental awareness must be adhered to, to ensure PPE is disposed by authorized waste disposers according to Waste Classification and Management Regulations, 2013, published under Government Notice R634 in Gazette No. 36784 of August 23, 2013 • Strict Screening procedures – needs to remain in place to ensure every single person entering a workplace is screened and authorized to enter the workplace. Any queries can be referred to the onsite nurse for clarification Bartmann has advice for employers who become aware of an infection at the workplace.

“You must ensure that any infected staff is sent home or does not report to work. Ensure the work space is either fogged or cleaned using disinfectant chemicals. We also recommend that all the direct contacts at the office must be traced and sent for 14 selfquarantine periods, away from the office.

“My advice to any business owner is to make sure they have put the best possible measures in place to protect employees and customers. If you have any doubt about the measures you have taken, get in contact with your local health authority. It is also important to stay appraised of government’s latest announcements and regulations issued in the fight against the coronavirus,” says Bartmann. – Supplied.

Arcadia hosts fundraising initiative DURING the Covid-19 lockdown, old age homes have been subjected to very stringent regulations. All visitations have been prohibited, making it difficult for families to interact with one another, however the staff have done an amazing job in keeping the residents entertained.

Spokesperson for Arcadia Ian Redfern said: “Our traditional fundraising initiatives have also been postponed due to the general restrictions imposed by the government, placing our finances under pressure.

“We have been extremely fortunate that all our residents have remained healthy and we have had no cases of Covid-19 in the home. However, recently, there has been a fantastic response to our call for assistance”.

His New Life Church has organised a food donation drive with various drop off points in town. “Our pantry cupboards are now well stocked due to the generosity of the public. Last Friday, the uMvoti Agricultural Society organised a well supported fun walk where local businesses were able to market their wares and the walkers could enjoy the fresh air,” said Redfern.

A special mention must also be made to all the private individuals. “With a number of positive comments received, a similar will definitely be arranged again. Money raised at this event will go directly into the running costs of the home.

THE uMzinyathi District Municipality officially inaugurated a new PR councillor after the passing of Councillor Dladla in June 2020. Councillor Mbulelo Phakathi is a member of the Inkatha Freedom Party and joins the uMzinyathi Council from eNdumeni.

Phakathi was officially welcomed by the Deputy Mayor Councillor Ntombikayise Mdlalose and Speaker Felinkosi Sikhakhane.

Feeling good, Feeling positive with Schalk Bezuidenhout WEMBLEY College hosted stand-up comedian Schalk Bezuidenhout in a live-online show #heartofthefarm on September 4 at 8pm. Bezuidenhout is one of South Africa’s most popular stand-up comedians.

He shared some of his new material in an hour long show of sheer laughter and entertainment.

Media liaison officer at the school Louise Yeadon said: “Bezuidenhout increases laughter and lessens tears, although I think some of the audience might have been crying with laughter. His SA-Afro (South African Afro) has grown with his audience support. He passionately moves his head and gently sips his red wine whiling chatting about gate remotes, building jigsaw puzzles and entrepreneurial endeavours at school.

It feels like your funniest friend has come for dinner.”

Bezuidenhout was born in Kempton Park, “the New York of the East Rand”.

Yeadon said: “You can’t keep a good man

down and in Kempton Park, the only way of living is Afrikaans. He went to traditional Afrikaans schools where he learnt his repertoire of “Schalk” maxims.

His family and friends watched him evolve from an Afrikaans ‘seun’ into the king of comedy. It was obvious, even to his parents that he would study drama and to help numb the pain they sent him to study in Cape Town. While studying in Cape Town, Schalk realised there is more to life than rugby and boerewors.

He started doing stand-up comedy in 2011.” Bezuidenhout is mastering the art of live-online comedy.

TEN years ago, Lelly Mntungwa set out to get Msinga women sewing to make a basic living. Now she employs 260 workers and recently took delivery of a machine that can churn out 1,2 million surgical masks a week.

The machine is a semi-automatic surgical mask machine worth R4,2 million, and is a donation from the Health and Welfare Sector Education and Training Authority.

It was the high unemployment rate and poverty in rural areas that first motivated Mntungwa (40), who is from Keate’s Drift near Greytown, to create jobs for other women by teaching them how to sew.

She is now the owner of the Msinga Clothing Factory, a community organisation that aims to increase the skills of unemployed residents. Mntungwa’s 260 workers at the site specialise in sewing face masks, school uniforms and other clothing. The products are distributed throughout South Africa.

Mntungwa, who has a diploma in marketing from Damelin, told The Gazette that in 2009 she decided to use an abandoned shoe factory, which shut down years ago, renovate it and turn it into a clothing factory.

Her organisation has also received 25 sewing machines and 100 chairs from the Msinga Local Municipality.

She started the factory after reading a report in 2010 that rated uMsinga­ as one of the poorest communities in the country. She then left her job at a bank and started the community organisation.

Mntungwa believes that developing her own community will unlock many opportunities for the unemployed women and youth.

Mntungwa said: “The purpose is to invest in Msinga. The new machine is first of its kind in South Africa.

“We are the first factory to have a machine that will sew many masks in a short space of time. We can now even supply face masks around the country. The masks that will

manufactured at the factory include the M95 surgical mask and the Filtering FacePiece [dust masks] which are used in mines.”

The factory also manufactures school wear, sanitary pads and clothes.

Traditional leader chief Ngange­ndlovu Mchunu applauded Mntungwa for being in the forefront of the fight against poverty in rural communities. He urged more women to follow in her footsteps.

ACCORDING to The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG), the impact of Covid- 19 and its lockdown restrictions has led to an increase in the number of calls that the organisation has been receiving from people showing signs of depression.

Studies suggest that mental illness is a global issue that affects quite a number of people. There is an estimated 300 million people suffering from depression and in South Africa, more women are diagnosed with depression, and half of the people diagnosed do not finish their treatment.

In South Africa, one in four women are diagnosed with clinical depression in a year.

What most people are not aware of is that the foods they eat play a significant role in contributing towards depression and mental illness in general.

Bearing in mind the surge of mental health illness that has been predicted by mental health experts post-Covid-19, people must be wary of what they eat to reduce the risks of getting clinical depression that

might be triggered by their diet.

“The need for alternate approaches to enhance the current treatments for depression has sparked interest in the neurobiology of depression and the possible role that diet could play in preventing depression and helping to reduce depressive symptoms in clinically depressed patients,” says Omy Naidoo, Dietician at Newtricion Wellness Dieticians.

There are various ways in which depression can affect a person’s diet. Amongst other things, this may include: changes in appetite, an increase or even complete loss of appetite, craving salty, sweet or high fat foods, as well as increased fatigue and apathy leading to reduced energy levels and motivation to make healthy food choices.

“A growing body of evidence suggests that ‘Inflammation’ is an indicator of depressive and non-depressive symptoms. This means that diets that are high in foods known to increase inflammatory markers (pro-inflammatory) in the body increase the likeli-

hood of depression, whilst anti-inflammatory foods can protect against depression. Essentially, foods that increase inflammatory markers in the body are thought to trigger the pathway in the brain responsible for depression,” explains Naidoo.

Dieticians promote a diet that is filled with nutrients that prevent and reduce the risk of disease. The Mediterranean diet is one of the widely studied to reduce such risks.

“For people that may not find the Mediterranean diet fascinating, foods such as unrefined grains, oily fish, lean meat and poultry, peanuts and fresh fruit and vegetables as well as beans, peas and lentils may help reduce one’s worsening depression,” adds Naidoo.

Understanding the role that food plays in various medical conditions and adopting a more naturalistic diet with long-term physical and mental health benefits may save a lot of people from contracting chronic diseases such as depression.

Six-year-old NEEDS YOUR HELP AZILE Ngubane just turned six year old on September 5.

A time that is meant to be joyous and filled with the wonder of discovery, has been clouded by the angst of fighting a blood cancer that is threatening her young life.

Azile is described by her family as a young girl who loved attending school and never gave her mom any trouble with getting ready in the mornings.

In 2019, she started having pain in her joints and losing weight. Her parents at first took her to a general practitioner who then referred them to a specialist. It was there where they learnt that their only daughter was diagnosed with Lymphoblastic Leukaemia.

“This was something that was very foreign to us, as we never believed that children could suffer from cancer,” said her mom Busiswa.

“The whole family was shattered by the diagnosis,” added Busiswa. “We have to be strong and supportive to our daughter,” she continued.

Every 27 seconds someone somewhere in the world is diagnosed with a life-threatening blood disorder. A stem cell transplant from a matching donor is the only hope of cure for many of these patients. Donor matches are based on genetics and are much more complex than matching blood types.

There is a 1:100 000 chance of finding a match and there is only a 25% chance that a sibling could be a match. The remaining 75% chance is based on an unrelated matching donor being found.

Azile makes the list of these many patients that are in need of a blood stem cell transplant. She unfortunately does not have siblings, this leaves her in a scramble to find a matching donor somewhere is South Africa or elsewhere in the world. Her treating specialist has requested a search for a matching donor and the result has not been successful.

THE clubhouse deck was the place to be on Saturday, September 12, where 18 holes of golf was replayed over and over again. There were comments as to where things went wrong, or a ball lost here and there, over a few frosties. This was after all, where the score cards were handed in and checked by the organiser Dieter Meyer, of the “ Better Ball with a Twist Competition.”

There was the “nunu fundi” Mike Barrow who stopped on the course to view the birds and the bees and stretched the time limit for 18 holes of golf to the limit with the “nut cracker” Martin Platt who has recently taken up golf. Also in the competition were “finance guy” Vijay Roopi, “ Shop keeper” Colin Hooper all the way from the other side of the mountain, Keats Drift (who is becoming a regular player at St Cathryn’s ) chatting to “printer” Paul du Preez.

Other golfers that played were from clubs like Umhlali, Silver Lakes, Sakabula, Eshowe and our neighbour Greytown but the local knowledge and talent of the course showed in the results.

The format was a better ball with a twist, and that twist was to play your partner’s drive. It was fun and in the same field of 32 players were three husband and wife teams. With a format like this, the wives often had their drives in play or were safely on the fairways.

The father and son teams also enjoyed the day, when the three sons tried to out drive their fathers, only to succumb to the years of golfing experience and the golden golfing saying “drive for show - putt for dough”.

Greytown Racing Pigeon Club news ON Saturday, August 29 saw the liberation of the race birds from Boshoff in the Orange Free State, a distance of 525km.

Liberated at 7am, the yearlings covered the distance in six hours 17 minutes with the first bird clocking a velocity of 1390.744 metres per minute to win the race for R.D. Lofts team.

About 30 minutes later the second bird arrived to give second position to Naicker Brothers team with a velocity of 1287.274m.p.m. The next two positions went to R.D. Lofts with Naicker Brothers taking the fifth and final position.

After a 7.30 am liberation the open birds once again out flew the yearlings by covering the distance in five hours 13 minutes to achieve a velocity of 1669.262 metres per minutes.

Once again giving R.D. Lofts the winner and overall combine win.

Second position also to R.D. Lofts flew at 1555.917 followed

by Naicker Brothers at 1535.501 and 1531.786 m.p.m.

R.D. Lofts the took the next five positions with Naicker Bros filling tenth and final slot.
