Cooking oil price surge LONDIWE XULU The increasing cooking oil price has caused many South Africans to worry about the impact of the Russia/Ukraine war on the already high cost of living.

While some may have initially viewed the conflict between Russia and Ukraine as something happening far from them, the effects seem to be hitting ordinary South Africans, causing major supply shortages and oil prices soaring.

Marketing manager of the Pietermaritzburg-based Willowton Group, Selvan Naicker, said Ukraine accounts for 53% of global supply of sunflower oil in export while Russia accounts for 27%.

Naicker said the immediate impact of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine was that global sunflower oil prices increased by 50%. This led to a sharp rise in the prices of other vegetable oils such as palm and soya bean oil.

He said Europe (EU) has also banned exports of sunflower oil as well as other grains and foods to non-EU markets such as South Africa, China, and India.

“South Africa imports sunflower oil from the EU and as a direct consequence we will not receive shipments of sunflower oil,” Naicker said.

He added that due to a critical shortage of vegetable oils worldwide, prices have increased significantly and are expected to continue to soar.

“We do not see any respite in the short to medium term.

The input costs for cooking oils, margarine, soaps, snacks, biscuits, mayonnaise and many other basic foodstuffs has, as a direct consequence, risen or will rise sharply. Vegetable oils are a core ingredient in many of these products,” Naicker said.

He said the local price of sunflower seed has increased in tandem with international prices. This means sunflower oil and other vegetable oils will increase in price and remain firm for the foreseeable future, notwithstanding any possible resolution of the conflict in Ukraine, he said.

“South Africa increased its plantings of sunflower seed during the summer when agricultural land was flooded due to heavy rains. Unfortunately, this seed was planted in late January and February.

The harvest of sunflower seed will be delayed to June of this year. Until June

Apparently some supermarkets have also been increasing their oil prices while some have even limited customers from buying more than two bottles.

Fearing a potential shortage, many have been panic buying, causing others to join the frenzy.

A Pietermaritzburg man, Elton Mbanjwa said the situation is getting out of hand.

“We are facing a very difficult time in our lives where we have to fight for survival. The cost of living is increasing but the salaries we receive monthly remain the same,” said Mbanjwa.

He said he almost had a heart attack when he arrived at a supermarket and saw how much oil costs now.

“Seeing the price and being limited to only two, it took me back to 2020 when we went through lockdown. We had a difficult time and it seems not to get any better,” Mbanjwa said.

The marketing manager at Durban’s Oxford Freshmarket, Patrick Hyland, said oil prices are expected to increase in the next week or two.

The newly appointed head of Education in KwaZulu-Natal, Nkosinathi Ngcobo, says the department is ready to deal with the water and sanitation problems that are facing most of the schools in the province.

“Ngcobo, who hails from Inanda, took over from Dr Enock Nzama, who retired.

Before being appointed as the department head, Ngcobo was a chief director of human resources management, a position he had occupied since 2005.

Ngcobo started his career in education as a teacher at Mqhawe High School in the Pinetown District. He then moved to the Ntuzuma College of Education after finishing his masters degree at the State University of New York. He started as a lecturer and left the college as a head of department. Speaking to the Gazette last week, Ngcobo said water and sanitation are the biggest challenges that the education department are facing in KZN. He said the department is now embarking on a programme of drilling boreholes in schools where there are water supply issues.

“There are 1 158 schools that are in line now to get boreholes in the upcoming financial year.

“This will help them to have their own water supply and not rely on the municipalities to bring water tankers to fill the tanks in the schools when there are water shortages.

“We believe that this is a permanent solution to the water and sanitation problem because those two go together. “If you do not have water you will not have a flushed toilet. Those boreholes are going to be very useful in many cases where schools do not have water because the community is also having a water problem,” he said.

Ngcobo said there is also an innovative approach to dealing with infrastructural challenges in KZN schools.

Touching on the basic education sector’s response to the impact of the lockdown, Ngcobo said there is a comprehensive plan that is being

“A comprehensive set of austerity measures has also been put into place.”

Speaking about the recent incidents where teachers are alleged to have sexually assaulted pupils, Ngcobo said the education department has an unequivocal zero tolerance stance to sexual misconduct within the schooling system.

“All principals have been informed of their role and responsibilities regarding the immediate reporting of these cases to the SAPS. “In addition, there is an existing protocol to ensure that learners are provided with the necessary psychosocial support and assistance.

“Alleged perpetrators are placed on immediate precautionary suspension.

“These procedures are invoked by management within the school so as to minimise the phenomenon of protests by either learners and or parents.” He said teachers as well as officials of the department who violate policies will be dealt with expeditiously through the appropriate disciplinary procedures. He also urged the parents, pupils and the community to refrain from vandalising schools’ property or disrupting classes during protests.

“We have seen situations where community members close schools during service delivery protests or when they are aggrieved about other things that have nothing to do with the schools —and that is not right,” said Ngcobo

Aim to boost business CLIVE NDOU The KwaZulu-Natal provincial government yesterday pledged to work with the business sector to address the province’s economic challenges.

Speaking during a meeting between provincial government leaders and captains of industry in Port Edward on the south coast, Premier Sihle Zikalala said government was ready to remove stumbling blocks preventing businesses from investing in the province.

“As the provincial government we would like the private sector to assist us on how we could best create an environment conducive for business to operate and expand.

“We need to create jobs but that can only happen if we create a conducive environment for business,” he said.

The two-day meeting, ending today, comes after treasury MEC Nomusa DubeNcube tabled the province’s budget. In her budget, Dube-Ncube pledged to work with the private sector in rolling out infrastructure projects which will stimulate economic growth and create jobs. With unemployment hovering above 27%, KZN has been battling to revive the economy amid the devastating effects of lockdown.

The province’s economic woes were worsened by the July unrest which left several businesses unable to operate.

Zikalala told business leaders that government’s priority would be the creation of a peace and security climate within the province.

“We have gone a long way to stabilise the province but also to improve the security systems. But more than that, we are also working together with business to develop an integrated security strategy to protect all the businesses in the province,” he said.

About 100 chief executives of the province’s top companies were part of the meeting. In among other things, businesses had been complaining about the unreliable power supply in the province.

Zikalala said government was already working on the power supply challenges.

“The electricity shortage is a serious bottleneck. It undermines all efforts we have put in place — it undermines investment potential.

“We are going to fast-track interventions that seek to assist those who have been accredited to generate electricity in the province. We have also started a process of exploring the means and ways in which our municipalities can generate electricity,” he said.

The province recently suffered a blow following an announcement that Mara Phones, which pledged to investment R1,5 billion in the province, would no longer go ahead with the investment. According to earlier projections, Mara Phones’ investment would have created close to 800 jobs.

A few weeks ago, oil refinery giant, Sapref, announced the indefinite suspension of its Durban operations.

Zikalala said the provincial government was exploring ways to take over Sapref’s operations.

Celebrity suicides turn spotlight on mental health LONDIWE XULU Suicide and mental illness have been topical issues since the suicides of two South African celebrities this year.

Since January, South Africa has lost two celebrities — veteran actor Patrick Shai and rapper Riky Rick, whose real name is Rikhado Makhado through suicide.

A Pietermaritzburg based clinical psychologist, Zama Dladla, said mental health issues including depression, personality disorder and anxiety disorder were the most common reasons why people commit suicide.

“It is also important to understand suicide is not only caused by

mental illness. It’s so encouraging to watch our people now being more open and talking about how suicide is part of mental illness,” said Dladla.

She said people had became more sensitive about suicide and mental health challenges which was progress.

“It’s gone past the stage where people would say a person who commits suicide was supposed to man up or woman up or they’ve gone against religion and tradition,” Dladla said.

Asked about some of the signs one can look out for from a person dealing with mental health or suicidal thoughts, Dladla said social withdrawal, isolation and a change in

behaviour were the common signs.

“If you notice a change in someone, it’s a good time to ask if they are okay and avail yourself as a support system,” said Dladla.

She added another less common sign was when people start talking about death more often, giving away their belongings or planning their funerals. She said people who are about to commit suicide usually emotionally prepare their loved ones for their death, without them realising they were doing this.

She said when suicide is caused by a mental health issue, it is never instant. She said prior to the person committing suicide they would have thought about it or have attempted it before.

According to the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag), about 60% of people who commit suicide in South African are depressed.

‘Government is still struggling to get South Africans vaccinated against Covid-19’ With around 25 million vaccine doses available, Health Minister Joe Phaahla (pictured) says the government is still struggling to get South Africans vaccinated against Covid-19, especially after a “less severe” fourth wave.

According to Phaahla, getting more young people vaccinated is one of the government’s main goals. He was responding to ANC MP Xiaomei Havard’s written parliamentary question on the government’s efforts to boost the vaccination roll-out plan should the national state of disaster be suspended.

“The vaccination programme is able to administer 250 000 vaccinations a day and all measures are in place to sustain this capability. There are at least 25 million doses of vaccine in the country. The challenge is convincing people to vaccinate, which is more difficult now because many believe that the pandemic is over purely because the impact of the fourth [Omicron] wave was less severe,” Phaahla said.

He said the national Department of Health, private sector and NGOs had

commenced with new and intensified measures to get jabs into arms.

A project management unit in the department was established to sustain vaccinations as other health services returned to full implementation.

“The youth-focused programme, #KeReady, was launched and is being driven by a team led by young health professionals. The Department of Higher Education and Higher Health has embarked on vaccination campaigns in all tertiary education institutions,” he said, adding: “The NDoH

A Pietermaritzburg father who cannot be named to protect his daughter’s identity said his 17year-old daughter had tried to commit suicide and this was due to bullying at school. He said his daughter, who is currently in Grade 11, had been bullied for most of her life.

“There are children who put notes in her bag and write things about her in the school bathrooms.

We have reported this to the school but nothing has been done,” he said.

He added his daughter took a number of pills in an attempt to commit suicide but they were able to rush her to the hospital in time.

He said since then, they had been trying to be supportive and motivate her.

“Life is hard but we trust that our children are safe when at school, yet that’s the place that’s depressing them more. My daughter is not a social person and hardly talks even at home but we try by all means to be

there for her,” said the father.

Pietermaritzburg man Thobani Nxele said suicide and depression among men was also an issue that many did not want to talk about it.

“I feel like men are expected to be strong but it’s not always the case. There’s been Covid-19 where many people lost their jobs but men were still expected to provide for their families. Whenever men speak out about their difficulties, they are judged and when they commit suicide everyone pretends to understand and feel sorry,” said Nxele.

Dladla said psychologists have noted that the manner of approach to someone struggling with mental health was important.

“If you can see someone is going through something, how you approach them to [make yourself available] as the source of support is important.

“A lot of people are trying to advocate by saying be kind, because when someone is struggling with a mental health [issue], kindness and empathy can go a long way,” said Dladla.

[National Department of Health] is working closely with the Department of Basic Education to include vaccination in the school health service. The media campaigns have been intensified and all radio and television stations in the country are participating.”

Phaahla also said several companies had implemented mandatory vaccination in workplaces while others supported their workers’ vaccination.

“The intervals between doses [including booster doses] have been reduced to the lower limit of the evidence for good immune responses. Heterologous [mixed] vaccination regimens have been introduced to allow either of the vaccines to be used, which eases

the options for vaccination,” Phaahla said.

Furthermore, he said provincial health departments had implemented strategies to reach communities where vaccination coverage was poor.

Phaahla said, as of March 2, 1 635 827 vaccine doses had been administered to 1 364 029 children aged 12 and older.

The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority has approved Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine to be used for vaccinating children aged 12 to 17. According to the latest government notice, children are eligible to receive two doses of the Pfizer vaccine 21 days apart.

KwaZulu-Natal eyes burgeoning cannabis industry to boost revenue There has been much hype around the provincial Cannabis Committee that the KwaZulu-Natal government established this month, with it being touted as having the potential to boost the province’s rural economy.

The committee was first announced by Premier Sihle Zikalala (pictured) following the most recent provincial executive council on March 6.

His announcement comes after Agriculture and Rural Development minister Thoko Didiza last year said they were issuing and monitoring permits for the production of hemp in South Africa.

The multi-disciplinary committee was formed to develop the province’s cannabis and hemp industry, according to the executive.

The KwaZulu-Natal government estimates that the potential revenue from the industry could be over R28 billion, with a potential to create between 10 000 and 20 000 job opportunities across the industry and its value chain.

The responsibilities of the committee would involve overseeing the cannabis and hemp industry; ensuring adherence to regulatory systems; seed supply systems; and research and technology development.

He said that while the committee will be active in the finalisation of the provincial master plan for hemp, other uses of the plant will not fall under the committee.

“The use for both medicinal and recreational reasons so far falls outside the work of the committee,” he said.

COMMERCIAL, LEGAL ISSUES Mabaso said they hope to also focus on the commercialisation of the industry.

“In particular, we want to focus on rural economic development. The Department of Agriculture will focus on primary production and farmers’ support, coupled with research.

“Traditional leadership would work with rural communities to unlock land parcels, plantations and agro-processing.”

When asked about the legality of the undertaking, Mabaso said the police are aware of their plans and are responsible for law enforcement and compliance.

On Tuesday, amendments to the Cannabis for Private Purposes Bill finally made it to Parliament’s Justice and Constitutional Development Portfolio Committee. Parliamentarians anticipate the bill may be passed in April, before heading to the National Council of Provinces.

The bill came about after a Constitutional Court ruling on September 18, 2018, gave Parliament 24 months to make the necessary legislative amendments to allow for the private use of marijuana. — News24.

Hermannsburg’s Little Oaks celebrate Karneval Hermansburg celebrated the German tradition of ‘Karneval’ (carnival) last Tuesday with the traditional cry of “Helau!” Pupils came dressed up in colourful costumes and received sweets distributed from the Karneval float, driven by Rainer Kassier.

The best-dressed pupils from the Kindergarten, primary school, high school and teachers won wonderful German treats.

Head of Kindergarten Uta Malzahn said, “German cakes and sausages were available and it was a day of fun, fun, fun. We would like to extend a big thank you to the German Department for organising

this special event and to Rainer Kassier for so willingly giving up his time to drive the Karneval float.

NPO addresses pupils on bullying

He talked about his life, his experiences as a professional musician, travelling to lots of countries and playing shows.

said, “He also performed and explained a few songs, how their ideas were created and how they were built up to achieve the final product.

“Seeing his skills and gaining insights into his life was a very inspiring experience for our pupils.”

Hermannsburg’s Little Oaks and housing The past two weeks were filled with learning about different living environments, such as houses and apartments, and the different rooms in each.

Our Little Oaks learned more about each other and where their friends live as a result.

But they also learned how people lived long time ago – our wonderful Hermannsburg Mission House Museum is a great place to

go back in time. Learning about our history helps us to understand change and how society develops.

Together, we looked at how people cooked a long time ago, how their living rooms were different from ours today and the toys with which children played.

History is important to us: we are who we are today because of those who have gone before us.

A non-profit organisation called Jabulani based in KwaZiba organised an awareness campaign on school bullying at Mbangweni Community Hall recently.

In attendance were pupils and teachers from Zakhele Primary School, Sangweni Primary School and Inkosi Sizwe Secondary School.

The programme was directed

by Nhlanhla Mchunu. Pastor Simphiwe Zuma blessed the audience with his sermon. Chairperson of Honeyguide NPO Menzi Mdlalose, went beyond expectations when he gave clarity on bullying.

Greytown High athletics stars The Greytown athletes keep making their mark in the big league.

After an almost two year absence from the track, two pupils from the Greytown High School used a combination of natural talent, hard work and dedication to prepare for and participate in this year’s KZN Junior Championship.

The champs were held at the Pietermaritzburg Athletics Stadium during the weekend of March 3 to 6. Asande Ngubane equalled his personal best of 1,85m for high Jjump and Head Boy, Nkazimulo Mzolo, achieved his new personal best long jump of 6,40m.

SA drowning in rising costs NOMPILO KUNENE As key oil producer Russia intensifies its onslaught in Ukraine, South Africans are drowning in the rising cost of living.

Comparing SA’s current economic situation to the bad recession the country experienced in 2008, economist Professor Bonke Dumisa said we are in a slightly worse situation than we were back in 2008.

Dumisa urged people not to panic too much, but said we do need to be realistic and accept that the many ongoing global issues have a direct impact on the cost of living in South Africa.

Starting with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Dumisa said this has pushed up the price of international Brent crude oil to a 14 year high of close to $140 per barrel.

“Just to explain this a little, this price was exaggerated deliberately because of the war talks between Russia and Ukraine. Whatever the outcome, there are realistic hopes that there will be a long-term positive and amicable solution. Based on that, the price per barrel plunged [on Wednesday] from over $131 to $114 [on Thursday morning]. That’s a huge

Dumisa said over the past two months, we’ve seen an increase in the price of international crude oil. He said in December the price of Brent crude oil averaged at about $75 per barrel, in January it averaged at about $85, and in February it averaged at $95. “So you see that the climb is about $10 or more every month, which means that if we say the dollar is stable, we are already paying more than

the anticipated prices. Then in March, we saw a fuel price increase of R1,46 per litre.

“Based on these escalating prices of Brent crude oil, we are going to have a higher fuel price adjustment — maybe between R3 and R5. This means we may be paying R25 or R26 per litre in April.”

He said because all goods in South Africa are transported by road, every time there is a fuel price adjustment, food suppliers need to keep their profit margins and are then forced to also increase their prices, leading to food inflation.

Dumisa said food inflation in SA is higher than the consumer price index (CPI).

Dumisa said as inflation goes up, people tend to use more credit due to not having enough disposable income, leading to the repo rate going up in an attempt to deter people from using credit as this means people are using money they don’t have.

He said his issue with this is that inflation causes people to spend less, which effectively means no money is pumped into the economy, preventing the economy from growing.

Dumisa said for as long as the RussiaUkraine issues continue, the economy in South Africa will continue to suffer. “People need to tighten their belts and watch their spending habits closely because we are in unpredictable times,” he said.

Fishing competition The biggest bass fishing competition in the Southern hemisphere just got even bigger. On Saturday, March 12 the New Hanover Preparatory School (NHP) hosted its 18th annual Bass Fishing Competition. This year’s event was bigger than ever before boasting a record number of 1275 anglers.

Marketing manager at the school Jane Hampson said in a statement, “We were blessed with beautiful weather on the day and anglers enjoyed fishing at some of the 20 private farm dams that are open to the public for the event.”

The junior winner for 2022 was Daniel du Plessis who caught a 54,5cm bass. The senior winner was Jason Wing who caught the biggest bass of the day measuring 61,5cm.

St Cathryn’s news St Cathryn’s members playing in the Farmers Agri-care monthly mug on Saturday, March 12 got a small taste of championship golf with the rough somewhat tough in certain places.

The club is hosting the Mascor St Cathyn’s Club Championships on April 2 and 3. The mowing equipment had a severe breakdown and was compared to Eskom loadshed-

The rough mower packed up last Wednesday and then the fairway mower joined the breakdown list and the grass kept growing.
