BOY STONED TO DEATH in revenge attack ANDILE SITHOLE >>Andile.sithole@media24.com The family of a boy (18) who was allegedly stoned to death in the Vukaphansi area, near Kranskop, has called on the police to speed up investigations.

Vusi Ntuli was stoned to death in front of his friends on Saturday in what has been described as a revenge attack. He sustained an open wound to his forehead and body injuries. According to a source in the area, the alleged murderer was embroiled in a fist fight with Vusi’s brother in 2019.

A source said: “The attack was definitely revenge.”

Vusi’s sister Kwenzekile Ntuli said

the family are devastated by her brother’s death.

“We are aware that my elder brother had a fight with another man in 2019. My family was even fined a goat in a bid to make peace between the two families. We assumed that the matter had been resolved between the two families, but the recent incident left the Ntuli family shocked by this barbaric act,” she said.

Vusi’s mother S’maluza Ntuli called on the police to investigate the matter and ensure that the man who allegedly killed her son is sent to jail.

“All my hopes were on him. My son was very humble, respecting and always smiling. It pains me to think that I will never see him again,” she said.

Ward councillor Sandile Xulu condemned the killing and urged the community to remain calm.

“We are deeply saddened by this incident which happened at the time when community leaders are on a campaign to unite the youth.

“As the leadership of Kranskop we commend Kranskop police for their swift action in arresting the man. We therefore urge residents to remain calm and refrain from taking the law into their own hands,” Xulu said.

KZN police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said: “It is alleged that he was assaulted by a known man using a stone. On Sunday, Kranskop police arrested the man (22) in the Nkandla area where he was hiding. He is expected to appear in the Kranskop Magistrate’s Court today.

Minister meets Greytown business owners GAZETTE REPORTER The MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs Ravi Pillay visited Ladysmith and Greytown as part of the province-wide visits to engage with municipalities and businesses affected by the recent unrest.

Pillay, who is accompanied by Trade and Investment KwaZulu-Natal CEO Neville Matjie and officials from the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, kicked off his visit with a meeting in Ladysmith where he met councillors, business representative and taxi owners. He received a report on the extent of

the destruction and looting that affected businesses mostly in eZakheni Township.

Pillay then visited the Defy warehouse and the eZakheni Plaza where he assessed the damage and engaged with affected parties including managers of some of the business premises that were looted. Pillay also visited the Ladysmith crematorium which has ceased operation following the vandalism and theft of property.

Later in the afternoon, Pillay headed to Greytown where, together with uMvoti Mayor Thami Ngubane held an engagement with business owners from the town and from the neighbouring Kranskop.

FATHER AND SON injured in plane crash ANDILE SITHOLE >>Andile.sithole@media24.com A man is fighting for his life in hospital after the two-seater Savage aircraft he was in, hit an Eskom power line and caught fire in Rietvlei near Greytown last Wednesday.

While the father was being transported to hospital in his son’s aircraft to hospital, this plane also crashed.

According to police sources, the injured man and his son were flying in separate Savage aircrafts when the father’s plane hit the power line

and caught fire.

Sources revealed that the man sustained third-degree burns to his body.

“They were both flying around, and the son was following him. Upon seeing his father’s aircraft hitting the power line, he flew for about a kilometre before he landed on the ground.

“He then requested help from the driver of a tractor who was nearby the scene.

“They used the son’s aircraft to try and transport him to hospital, but unfortunately his plane also crashed.

“Emergency services were called

and the injured man was transported to a nearby hospital in a critical condition. The son was not hurt.”

The names of the two people involved in this crash have not been released at this stage.

Spokesperson The South African Civil Aviation Authority Marie Bray said: “The Accident and Incident Investigation Division received notification of an accident in Greytown that took place on July 28 and an investigator was dispatched. It is reported that one occupant was flown to hospital with burns. A preliminary report with further information will be released within 30 days of the occurrence.”

by Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Nathi Mthethwa at a virtual meeting with business owners and traditional leaders last week.

Mthethwa urged community leaders to reach out to the communities in a bid cement the differences and other deep seated problems caused by the recent violent unrest. He admitted that the recent violence emanated from the incarceration of former president Jacob Zuma.

However, he urged residents to unite and work towards a prosperous future.

“We definitely need to talk to the conscience of all our people to tell them that if they destroy their own they are going to be at the mercy of others. We need to protect what is ours, so that our local economy thrives as well. We have a duty to return to the communities of uMzinyathi to chart the way forward of what needs to be done and how do we rebuild buildings, infrastructure and rebuilding the people. We need to build a nation that is socially coherent. We say no to racism and any form of discrimination,”Mthethwa said.

He said the government have not had an understanding of the deep seated problems that affect communities.

“These things that happened in the past two weeks would be superficial if we are to look at them from the point of view of people acting on the judgement against former president Jacob Zuma. Yes that was a trigger, that created all kinds of mayhem. But because it was a trigger it means that it triggered something much fundamental at the root course of our society.

“The root course of our society is poverty, unemployment and

NEWS Hermannsburg welcomes new executive head Hermannsburg School is delighted to welcome the new executive head Matthew Reed to the Hermannsburg family.

Reed brings a wealth of valuable experience with him, having held teaching positions at Merchiston Preparatory School in Pietermaritzburg and at Penryn Preparatory School, Nelspruit, where he is currently deputy principal. He has also engaged in rugby coaching roles with the Sharks and the Pumas.

Having grown up on the KZN South Coast and completing his schooling at Weston Agricultural College in the KZN midlands, Reed and his family will be returning ‘home’ to the midlands.

He is excited about his new venture, saying: “My wish is for the school to continue moving from strength to strength and for those that attend Hermannsburg to continue benefiting from the solid core values that are instilled in every scholar through the supportive and positive staff at Hermannsburg.”

Reed will begin his tenure at Hermannsburg on October 1 this year.

“It was a special day as we got an opportunity to bring a cake and gift to Gogo Ndaba. In the spirit of Charlotte Maxeke, it is important for us to celebrate our centenari-

ans and the role they play in society. I first met gogo Ndaba when I was here in Nondweni for Mandela Day celebrations, it was encouraging to see her in good spirits and still able to walk on her own. Our centenarians play an important role in society as they have indigenous knowledge which can be beneficial on how we do things in our times,” Mavimbela said.

Ndaba said her secret to long life is in eating traditional food.
