A

MAN was shot twice during an alleged house break-in in Tongaat early on Tuesday morning.

According to Reaction Unit SA’s (Rusa) spokesperson, Prem Balram, a resident contacted them just after 3am reporting a person running through their property.

Balram said that Rusa officers were dispatched to the address in Metcafe Park and upon arrival found a man bleeding excessively on the pavement.

The man had sustained wounds to his leg and pelvis.

“It was established that the suspect and an accomplice were in the process of breaking into a garage when he was confronted by the homeowner who was armed with a shotgun,”

said Balram.

Balram said it is alleged that one of the men attempted to attack the homeowner, who retaliated by firing two rounds.

The men fled over the boundary wall into the neighbouring properties, but the injured man collapsed while trying to make his getaway, he said.

Two spent shotgun casings were recovered on the property. The second suspect managed to evade arrest.

According to provincial police spokesperson, Captain Nqobile Gwala, the homeowner was woken up by his dogs barking and went to investigate.

He found his garage window broken and an unknown man inside the garage.

The intruder saw the homeowner and ran out of the garage.

“The complainant shot the suspect on the

left upper thigh and left ankle and was taken to hospital under police guard.

The suspect (27) was taken to hospital where he is under police guard.

A case of burglary was opened for investigation.

Speaking on the current rate of crime in the Tongaat area, CPF chairperson Nazir Sadack said house break-ins and crime have recently been on a decline – which is a good thing.

However, he notes that common theft is more frequent, items found lying in the yard, clothes, and garden equipment are being stolen.

He also said that it is important to note that crime trends vary throughout the course of the year.

>>Purnal.Poonusamy@media24.com TOWARDS the end of 2020, the social workers at Tongaat Child and Family Welfare Society received a report of an abandoned baby girl, who was found hidden in some bushes on a street near the central business district.

In November, the Coastal Weekly reported that the baby was found by a passing jogger and rescued by IPSS Medical Rescue.

Manager of the society, Jo Moodley said: “The baby is approximately one month old and was left alone with no means of support. A Tongaat community member alerted the relevant professionals who had provided immediate medical, social work and SAPS services to the child.”

She states that the baby has undergone all relevant tests and is in good health. The baby has been placed in safe accommodation pending investigations.

The society is now requesting assistance from anyone who may have information regarding either the child’s biological parents or the abandonment.

Speaking on the almost two month period since the baby was found, Moodley said: “There are a lot of procedures to follow for placement, but the baby was placed in temporary safe care with a valid court order a short while after the baby was discharged from hospital.”

Moodley adds that they are now proceeding to place the baby in long term care, in order to do so, the society has to return to court to finalise the placement since it is still currently listed as temporary.

“It is a lengthy process as we have to secure a lot of paperwork and prove that we have done enough investigations to locate any sort of family.

AVING implemented four days straight of continuous load shedding from Friday to Monday, infrastructure on the North Coast of Durban felt the weight of these electricity cuts.

The eThekwini Municipality also reported that due to load shedding, Umgeni Water, an entity that supplies the city with water, was battling to pump it to numerous

eThekwini reservoirs.

Over 30 reservoirs were affected with several of these being based on the north coast.

The municipality apologised to the many households that bore the brunt of this situation which was beyond the city’s control. They however mobilised water tankers to the affected areas.

Umgeni Water operates and manages infrastructure in seven systems which includes Hazelmere Dam in the north of Durban.

Corporate stakeholder manager of Umgeni Water, Shami Harichunder said: “Abstraction and transfer of raw water to water treatment plants and supply of drinking water in bulk to municipal reservoirs have been affected to varying degrees by ongoing Eskom load shedding.”

Harichunder added that water treatment plants under Umgeni Water are on Eskom or municipal grids and when possible use power generation back-up systems.

These systems are operated at small plants, but their limited capacity does not allow for optimal operation.

Harichunder said these systems cannot be used at large plants, such as Durban Heights in Durban, because of their high power requirements for large-volume potable production and dependency on electricity to meet this need.

In order for this not to happen again, Umgeni Water is in ongoing discussions with Eskom and mu-

nicipalities to exclude water treatment plants from load shedding.

“Staff of Umgeni Water have indicated that load shedding at stage 2 is likely to be adequately managed with existing procedures and processes. However, the expectation is that higher levels of power supply interruptions is likely to result in significant supply interruptions in systems that are constrained and where demand exceeds resource availability,” said Harichunder.

Banks say ‘simply impossible’ to sanitise all ATMs daily in SA A

LL of South Africa’s biggest retail-network banks are now in breach of national disaster regulations aimed at curbing the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Last week, co-operative governance and traditional affairs minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma published backdated amendments to rules that slightly reduced curfew, defined “beaches” (for

purposes of banning their use) and created new obligations for banks.

On top of managing queues at their ATMs to ensure social distancing, all banks are now required to “ensure that all automated teller machines... have hand sanitisers for use by the public at each automated teller machine”.

That is simply “impossible”, said one bank representative privately, and

a show of significant ignorance by the government of how modern banking operates. Each of the big five retail banks — FNB, Absa, Nedbank, Standard, and Capitec — have confirmed that they are not in full compliance, at least not yet. In some cases, ATMs are sanitised only once a quarter, during routine cleaning. The government has taken a hard line, threatening penalties

for banks that do not comply. “This is very important, because, if not, the ATMs could become super spreaders,” said Dlamini-Zuma. Between them, banks have tens of thousands of ATMs, some of which provide the only banking service in far-flung areas. With little to no prospect of reliably ensuring the availability of hand sanitiser, those are the machines most likely to be shut

down if government seeks to enforce the sanitiser rule. Discussions are now underway via the the Banking Association South Africa (Basa).

The major banks all stressed that they were taking various measures to keep customers safe, including close management of ATMs at their branches, which tend to have high volumes.

ESIDENTS in some parts of the Hambanathi area in Tongaat have allegedly been living without water for approximately three weeks, due a water pump needing to be fixed.

According to the Ward Councillor of Hambanathi, Princess Zanele Khumalo, the water has been cut since before Christmas last year.

She said that she has made the municipality aware of the issue but was informed that the pump was broken. Khumalo added that she was told that they don’t have an approximate date for when it will be fixed.

Despite municipal water trucks being dispatched to provide relief in the area it was not enough.

Ten trucks were dispatched to Hambanathi on Wednesday, but were not sufficient according to Khumalo.

Responding to these claims, eThekwini Municipality’s spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela said: “We are unaware of any water issues that have been ongoing since December in the oThongathi area.

“We are, however, aware of a failure of a pump and motor at the oThongathi Water Treatment Works, that occurred on January 11.”

He said that the pump and motor have been sent for repairs under an emergency order.

“The contractor is working on a 24-hour basis to complete this repair.

We envision functionality to be restored late Saturday [January 16] afternoon. We apologise for the inconvenience experienced by residents.

Water tankers were dispatched immediately to the affected areas,” he added.

Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, a water cut of this magnitude may open doors to another problem

of a rise in Covid-19 infections. Water is a key factor for proper sanitation and instrumental in the prevention of the spread of Covid-19.

In light of this, spokesperson of the Tongaat Community Health Centre, Noma Khoza said that the centre is providing the community of Tongaat with an open, two-way communication regarding Covid-19.

Symptomatic patients who have not yet tested can proceed straight to the flu clinic at their premises.

Crack cocaine - silently stealing livelihoods JYOTHI LALDAS

CHEAP and easily accessible, crack cocaine commonly known as rock locally, is quickly becoming the drug of choice on the north coast of KZN. At around R50 a “piece”, rock is far cheaper than pure cocaine and according to a former user, gives a bigger high.

In terms of constitution, rock is made from mixing

cocaine hydrochloride with bicarbonate of soda and putting it through a chemical process called “cooking” from which the crystals are formed.

Only a very small amount of cocaine is needed to produced a large amount of crystals. According to a police source, the drug looks like pieces of chalk and a glass pipe called a “rockpipe” is used to smoke it.

He said the most common form of a “rockpipe” is a glass tube that contains a copper wire filter, usually

called gauze. “The rock is placed on the filter and then burnt with a lighter. As soon as the gasses are released it is inhaled.” According to the source, the drug sells for approximately R50 a piece, which is usually less than a centimetre wide. “While pure cocaine is a rich man’s drug, rock is cheaper and more easily accessible around smaller towns, a poor man’s high if you will.

“Dealers are plenty and often offer delivery to the place the user is at. Policing this is difficult because dealers have to have the drugs on them to be arrested and they are smart so they do not keep drugs on them.”

He said the problem is a growing one and affects people of all ages and races.

“When you think of a drug addict or drug user, you think of people in tattered clothes, scratching themselves and acting jittery, you don’t expect them to look like your neighbour or your local shopkeeper. This drug is all over and in the places with the people you would least expect, young and old, man and woman, it does not discriminate.” Speaking to the Weekly, a former user, who asked not to be named, said the drug is nicknamed “eat sum more” because of the craving it indu-

ces. “People end up spending thousand of rands chasing the high because even though it is huge and euphoric it is very short, five minutes at best. “It is very intense, you end up losing yourself in it and it leaves you craving more and more. Once the high fades you’re left with a buzz, a sort of paranoid, hyper, fidgety feeling.”

The former user, a family man with a good job, explained that he was not an addict, however, he did have a problem, like many other people he knew.

“I got into it like any other habit like drinking and smoking. I was with friends and I was curious so I gave it a try. Another thing is if you are very drunk, it can make you sober after a single hit.

“I don’t know the science of it, but it works and that is most often how I ended up using it.

“The thing is once you start a session its difficult to stop, you can go from night to morning and drop thousands of rands in a matter of hours.”

Describing how the high was “bigger” thank cocaine he said: “If cocaine would put you on the ceiling for 30 minutes then rock would send you to the clouds but only for five minutes.”

He said the drug is sold in pieces, quarters costing around R350, halves at R700 and blocks at around R1 400 where a “block” is half of the circle pictured.

AST week, the Department of Basic Education’s deputy minister Dr RM Mohale announced that the commencement of the 2021 academic year has been postponed to February 15.

Pre-Covid-19, schools were initially set to open on January 13, however the pandemic pushed the date back to January 27. Now in the midst of the second wave, the date of opening had to be readjusted and thus delayed by two weeks.

The decision extended to private schools that were already opened.

“The coronavirus has turned our lives upside down; and decision-making for a sector as large as basic education, has become a difficult exercise,” said Mohale during the address.

“This is done to provide relief to the health system which is already struggling to cope with the current demands,” added Mohale.

For public schools and private schools which follow the same calendar, changes are as follows: • School Management Teams (SMTs) shall report for duty on Monday, January 25; • Teachers shall follow on Monday, February 1; and • Lastly, pupils return on Monday, February 15.

In a statement issued by their secretariat, The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU) noted and welcomed the decision to delay the opening of schools, but does not agree with the teachers and SMTs return dates.

SADTU said that the unions were not consulted, and pointed out that teachers

are also vulnerable to the pandemic as much as children.

“The decision to delay the opening of schools is based on the advice of scientists and the World Health Organisation (WHO) that it would be better to delay the reopening of schools as the increase of the pandemic is at the stage is unprecedented. The numbers must be declining for 14 consecutive days to reopen schools safely. Allowing educators to report for duty a week before learners report to schools would be a justifiable option because we shall have observed for 14 consecutive days, the decline in numbers,” said SADTU. On parent, Priscilla Govender welcomed the delay: “I have been anxiously waiting for this announcement. Especially considering the new strain can affect children. Giving time for cases to decline is a good idea, I will then feel more comfortable about my child returning.”

LAST week, five South African matriculants of 2020, were given a once-in-alifetime opportunity to be a part of the Matrics in Antarctica initiative.

Mountview Secondary School pupil, Thea Juanita Earnest (18), who frequently engages in activism and community support, was the only one selected from KwaZulu-Natal who will be joining the team of world-renowned explorer, Riaan Manser, on a five-day scientific adventure in Antarctica.

Speaking on her feelings on being selected, Earnest said: “When I was told that I was going to Antarctica with Riaan Manser and distinguished professors from Stellenbosch University, I was completely overwhelmed. Most of all, I felt blessed. Jesus has been so gracious and merciful to me. Amid the turbulence and disruption that my matric year was associated with, God carried me through. I have always wanted to be a symbol of change in my community where young people can see their faces reflected in mine and know that change is possible.”

The five participants will join the exploration team in Cape Town for their Covid-19 isolation period and attend virtual presentations to prepare for the trip.

The team will then leave for the Antarctic Logistics Centre International (ALCI) on January 27. Earnest found out about this unique opportunity during her trial exams when her teacher informed her of the trip. Earnest said that she was captivated, as it would give her the opportunity to directly engage with issues that were of paramount importance to her.

Since September, Earnest powered through a three-stage rigorous selection process which saw her detail her commitment to her aspirations and the importance of developing the environment in her community.

She describes the process as self-fulfilling, saying that even in the event she didn’t succeed, she knew she would be able to add value to the programme because of her potential and unique-mind-

ed approach.

“When people invest in your passions and skills so religiously, it makes you believe in yourself and your convictions as well,” she said.

Excited for the trip, Earnest is looking forward to braving the ice to collaborate with great minds and create a network of supportive and passionate individuals who want to make a change in their communities.

Earnest is also an accomplished debater on a provincial and national level, which saw her winning the inaugural Nelson Mandela Debating challenge and attending the prestigious Centenary Mandela day dinner with ex U.S. president Barack Obama in 2018.

Speaking on the experience, Earnest said: “After attending such monumental events like the Centenary Mandela Day Dinner with Barack Obama, I have learnt that tenacity and resilience is all you need to acquire success. Before great success, you will face great hardship and that is ultimately what will create a humble, prosperous and passionate individual.”

Having now completed matric, Earnest will be studying Geospatial Science at Wits University. “I would like to become a young woman with purpose and drive. I would love to contribute meaningfully to my community and bring honour to my community and country. Without the love and support of my family and my school headed by Mr IC Govender, I would not have been fearless in my pursuits. My success is not mine, it belongs to the Lord and all those that preceded me and those that will come after me,” she said.

Congratulating her well on the trip, the principal, SGB, staff and pupils of Mountview Secondary School, wish her everything of the best on this once in a lifetime experience.

“We are extremely proud of this young ambassador who will definitely go on bringing honour to our community, province and country,” said the school.

National Geographic is the official media partner for the Matrics in Antarctica initiative and will showcase this journey on its social media platforms.

Naidu taught at Isnembe Secondary for a period of 10 years prior to starting his stint at Victoria Primary in 1994 where he spent the past 26 years.

Reliving his storied carrier the principal of Victoria Primary School Lajeeth Maharaj said, one of the many feathers in Naidu’s cap, is that he can lay claim to being to Hashim Amla’s very first cricket coach at the school.

“Hashim publicly acknowledged Mr D Naidu on the international stage as being an influential, inspirational mentor,” he said.

Mr Naidu went on to achieve a Level 3 status as a cricket coach and an

A-Grade umpire. In 2013 he received a meritorious award from the KZN Cricket Union for his contribution to cricket in the province.

He umpired various national tournaments throughout South Africa and played a significant role as a mentor to coaches and umpires in the province.

Naidu is also a brilliant maths teacher as his unique brand of discipline and quirky sense of humour in the classroom has made him a firm favourite of his current and ex pupils.

Many of his former pupils remain in touch with him as a testimony of his ongoing support and interest in their progress.

One of his former pupils, Thandeka Mthembu paid tribute to him saying: “ My daughter Thembani and I are two out of thousands of pupils who have had the honour of drinking from your fountain of wisdom and no words can do justice to our gratitude for you. I am sure that our lives are trees that will branch out beautifully because its seeds have been sown by a teacher and nurturer like you.’’

LOCAL non-profit organisation, Ebukhosini Forty 3 Forty are making an appeal to the community to help them achieve their goal of acquiring a vehicle for the organisation.

The organisation, which operates in the Verulam and surrounding areas aim to empower youth through character and skill development programmes.

The organisation also engages in projects that meet the physical needs of the families of the youth and children they

work with. Not having their own vehicle has impacted greatly on their operations and they wish to change that.

In 2014, the organisation was the recipient of a sponsored second-hand vehicle which was used to transport the child beneficiaries; collect and distribute hampers; and general travelling for the organisation. However, recently the lifespan of the vehicle ran its course, and was costing the organisation too much to maintain. The lack of a vehicle has slowed down the organisation’s operations. Due to the pandemic, Ebuk-

the cordial relations and the wealth of expertise he has afforded to Victoria Primary.

“It is evident that his unwavering support and care makes him a passionate educator that is not easily forgotten by all who have crossed paths with him. When his retirement was announced on social media, hundreds of warm sentiments poured in from all over the province.” he added.

The ever humble Mr Naidu’s response was: “ I entered the profession dedicated to helping young children achieve their full potential in a quest to find their best selves.

“As I leave the portals of Victoria Primary, I will be taking with me the fond memories of my learners and colleagues. I will forever remember the relationships we shared and the great things we achieved. Remember there is only one of us. We are neither better nor less than the other. We are just striving to find the best version of ourselves. It is an ongoing journey.’”

Maharaj reiterated his respect and admiration for Naidu hailing him as an exceptional human being and a stalwart. He thanked him for his 26 years of dedicated service to the school.

Man United retain top spot in dour draw while Spurs sparkle M

ANCHESTER United held onto top spot in the Premier League after grinding out a dour 0-0 draw at title rivals Liverpool, while Tanguy Ndombele’s stunning strike sealed Tottenham’s 3-1 win at Sheffield United last night.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side had the better chances in a strangely subdued clash between two of English football’s bitterest rivals.

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker saved well from Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba in the second half, but neither side deserved to win.

United are three points clear of third placed Liverpool and two ahead of second placed Leicester.

United are top after the New Year for the first time since Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013 thanks to nine wins in an 12-match unbeaten run.

Leaving Anfield unscathed is a solid result for United as they chase a first title in eight years, but they might feel it was a missed opportunity to pile pressure on injury-hit Liverpool given their recent struggles.

It is the first time these two old foes have been involved in a title race together since 2009 when United, then at their peak, held off Liverpool’s challenge.

But there was little feel of a seismic encounter as both teams largely played with the handbrake on at an empty and silent Anfield.

Liverpool are well short of the dynamic form that carried them to the title last season and the Champions League in 2019.

Jürgen Klopp’s team have now gone four league games without a win and are without a goal in their last three top-flight matches.

Liverpool defender Joel Matip wasn’t fit enough to feature, so Jordan Henderson had to play as a makeshift centre-back alongside fellow midfielder Fabinho.

Despite that setback, Liverpool dominated a cautious first half with over 65% of the possession.

They lacked a cutting edge in the final third and Roberto Firmino shot wide before Mohamed Salah volleyed over. It took United 34 minutes to have a shot and they almost took the lead from it as Bruno Fernandes whipped his free-kick inches wide.

In an equally scrappy second half, Fernandes forced a good save from Alisson when his effort from Luke Shaw’s cross was turned away by the Brazilian’s foot. Thiago Alcantara’s strike was well saved by David De Gea, while Alisson made another fine stop to deny Paul Pogba’s close-range shot.

Sheffield 1 - 3 Tottenham Hotspur Tottenham climbed back into the Premier League title race as Ndombele’s strike sealed a 3-1 win against Sheffield United.

José Mourinho’s side took an early lead through a rare goal from Ivory Coast defender Serge Aurier.

Harry Kane’s 19th goal of the season — the England captain’s fourth in his last six games — increased Tottenham’s advantage before half time.

David McGoldrick got one back for United in the second half, but Ndombele’s sublime lob wrapped up the points at Bramall Lane.

The wonder-goal was the latest sign of Ndombele turning his Tottenham career around.

The 24-year-old’s fine form is a stark contrast to his struggles in his first season after arriving from Lyon, with Mourinho admitting the player had to change his mindset to get back on track.

Tottenham are on a seven-match unbeaten run in all competitions after winning at Bramall Lane for the first time since 1975.

With a home game against champions Liverpool looming next in the league on January 28, Tottenham still have a chance to mount a serious title challenge.

Meanwhile, after securing their first league win this season against Newcastle in midweek, the bottom of the table Blades remain 11 points from safety after their 16th defeat of the campaign.

Mourinho’s men made the perfect start as Steven Bergwijn’s fierce effort was superbly tipped over by Aaron Ramsdale.

From the resulting corner, Aurier rose highest to meet Son Heung-min’s delivery with a powerful header past Ramsdale to give Tottenham a fifth minute lead. Tottenham have scored five goals in the opening five minutes of Premier League games this season, more than any other team.

Meanwhile, the late game was due to feature Manchester City against Crystal Palace, but Aston Villa versus Everton was postponed because of Covid-19.
