OLICE in Verulam have arrested three people allegedly connected with house robberies on the north coast.

The men were arrested in connection with a robbery that took place in Buffelsdraai, Verulam. In the incident, it was alleged that the three robbers had entered the homeowners house and threatened him with a knife before taking his cellphone and clothing.

It is also alleged that two of the robbers were known to the homeowner, which allowed police to search for the robbers at their homes.

All three robbers were discovered at one of their homes and were arrested.

Verulam police spokesperson, Captain Henry Kisten said: “The knife that was used in the commission of the offence was also recovered and seized as an exhibit. All three suspects will be charged and appear in court shortly.”

Station commander of the Verulam station, Brigadier Victor Dludla praised Captain Thulani Mbatha and Constable Zakhele Maliwa together

with the rest of the officers for their arrests.

In another incident, emergency service, Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) apprehended a man (23) after he was allegedly reported for stealing a sensor floodlight from a residence in Brindhaven, Verulam.

According to Rusa spokesperson Prem Balram their officers responded to the a complaint from a resident, and was provided with a detailed description of the thief.

“Reaction officers conducted a search for the suspect and located him attempting to flee through Boys Town.

He was apprehended and restrained.

The flood light was recovered in a nearby bush,” said Balram.

Balram added that the man was handed over to the police, who informed them that he was allegedly wanted for another crime.

Tongaat CPF chairman Nazir Sadack added that in the Tongaat area they have noted a slight increase in houserelated robberies.

Previously Sadack said that certain crime trends were expected to pick up during the colder months.

Man arrested for defeating the ends of justice A MAN was arrested after falsely reporting that he was hijacked.

According to Verulam police spokesperson Captain Henry Kisten a case of carjacking was reported on May 14, where it was alleged by the complainant that he was in the Zwelisha area with his assistant delivering bread when they were approached by three people who pointed a firearm at him and hijacked his bakkie.

The man reported a case of carjacking with the police. However, during the investigation it was revealed the complainant staged the carjacking.

It is alleged that the assistant present at the hijacking gave a statement that the man had hired one of his friends to come and hijack him as he was experiencing financial difficulties. The man and his friend were arrested and will be charged after appearing in court shortly.

“This should be a warning to the public that if criminal charges are opened and if investigations reveal that the complainant lied about the crime than such complainant will be charged and will be criminally prosecuted,” said Kisten.

Communities warned against fraud VERULAM police are warning residents against the number of fraud cases that are being reported by the community.

In a recent incident, a man had seen an advert on Facebook for a vehicle being sold at R45 000. The man contacted the seller who was a woman, who asked for a deposit to be made into her bank account.

After sending her the proof of payment, the man was contacted by the women to pay the balance for the necessary paperwork, in order for the vehicle to be transferred onto his name.

She also promised to deliver the vehicle within two days.

The man waited, but the vehicle was never delivered. He tried contacting the seller, but the call went straight to voicemail, thus realis-

ing he was scammed.

Police spokesperson, Captain Henry Kisten elaborated on another scam where the seller will meet the buyer after the money has been deposited into the account of the seller, and they will then take the buyer to the licencing office to have the vehicle registered.

The seller will then tell the buyer to wait outside whilst the seller will goes inside. The buyer will wait for a long period of time expecting the seller to return only to realise the seller had disappeared.

Other fraud-related matters reported: • Money market transfers when the complainant sends money to a family member which is done mostly at retail stores by punching in a secret pin code and the money is withdrawn

by unknown persons other than the family member.

• ATM frauds when the victim punches in the pin code and it is exposed and the victim realises money has been withdrawn from his or her account and when someone offers assistance to the victim to withdraw money and also when victims are robbed of their bank cards.

“We are constantly warning the public with regards to adverts on the sale of items on Facebook to seek assistance before making wrong decisions. Communities must also be warned not to expose their pin codes and do not ask for assistance from strangers at the ATMs and also to avoid withdrawals of cash during the early hours of the money or late at evenings,” said Kisten. – Supplied.

ITH a sharp increase in Covid-19 cases in the last few days, the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) announced that South Africa has technically entered the third wave of the coronavirus pandemic.

This coupled with gatherings allowing for 100 people in indoor spaces and 250 people in outdoor spaces, various religious organisations in the province fear for the safety of not only the members of their congregations, but the public as a whole.

CEO of the KZN Christian Council, Dr Douglas Dziva said that the groups affiliated with the council have already raised awareness of the third wave and are sticking to government regulations. He is also encouraging every-

one in the faith communities to practise Covid-19 protocols.

Dziva added that the council has in place a response committee that meets on a weekly basis to find ways to support the existing governmentenforced regulations.

He said: “In the past wave, we lost more than 208 senior church leaders, bishops and reverends, and it is not something we want to see happening again… It’s tragic for the faith community, so we would really like to make sure that we don’t have that kind of situation again now that we are more informed of protection and prevention.”

Pietermaritzburg resident and religious teacher, Mohammed Saeed has a number of fears that he noted from the general public’s lack of following protocol.

He said that he noted a lot of apathy towards social distancing and wear-

ing masks, which he believes is due to the fatigue that came along with the pandemic. One of his other concerns was the misinformation surrounding the vaccine. He hopes that the government will make more of an effort in improving with regard to the vaccine programme.

On how prayers and services are conducted, he said that when religious gatherings were allowed to resume last year, in addition to the mosques, smaller prayers spots opened throughout the city to accommodate a smaller number of congregants. He added that many were allowed to pray from their homes as well.

PR and communications manager of the Durban branch of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), Krsangi Radhe Dasi said that their management closed many of the facilities since the begin-

ning of the lockdown, but only recently reopened with stringent protocols being followed.

“We have managed to successfully shift many of our festivals, classes and engagements to the online platform.

Thankfully, pre-Covid we have had a good social media presence and a live broadcast of the temple prayers and observances. Therefore, we have only had to upgrade those facilities rather than starting from scratch,” she said.

The South African Hindu Maha Sabha said that they constantly advise their affiliates to observe protocols as large religious gatherings have the potential to be super-spreader events.

“We are constantly sending out reminders to affiliates to ensure compliance with the Covid regulations as and when they change. The Sabha encourages people to observe their prayer at their homes – it makes no difference

DUE to the third wave of Covid19 infections, the disaster relief coordinator of the Tongaat Hindu Unity Forum, Sugie Govender, has urged the community to be proactive and take the flu vaccine and encouraged those who are eligible and over 60 to also vaccinate against Covid19.

Govender added that the upsurge in numbers is concerning and it is therefore important that the community starts a programme of action to improve and boost their immune system through immune boosting vitamins, regular exercise and good hygiene.

The forgotten casualties THABISO GOBA SMALL businesspeople who work along the Durban beach front are feeling the economic pinch caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

With Covid-19 still ravaging the country and the third wave imminent, numbers at Durban beaches have dwindled. While big businesses have been hit hard, small business owners feel they have also suffered an equal or even greater setback.

Siyabonga Nxumalo, a rickshaw driver, said he has never experienced a period of slow business before in his more than a decade of working at the beach. “It’s actually a waste of time now waking up and coming here to get burnt by the sun,” said Nxumalo, in a clearly frustrated tone.

Nxumalo is originally from Nongoma, north of KwaZulu-Natal, but rents a place in KwaMashu which is closer to Durban.

Before the first lockdown in March last year, Nxumalo said he would average at least 10 customers a day and that would easily cover his transport and food for the day. “Since the beaches opened, it’s been very bad. I am now used to going a day without a single customer,” he said.

While eThekwini Municipality and the South African government have tried to bail out businesses with a number of incentives, the businesspeople at the beach front said no one from the government has approached them. Sbonelo Ngcobo is one of the few remaining people that makes sand sculptures along the promenade.

A lot of Ngcobo’s colleagues have left because they can no longer afford the R540 permit which is paid every three months to the city.

“At the very least we could have got a waiver for a couple of years until business picks up again but when you don’t know which people to approach and which doors to knock at then there is nothing you can do,” said Ngcobo.

Ngcobo said beach sand sculptures are an integral part of the culture of Durban and in showcasing Durban to the world. “You look at every Durban tourism video and I guarantee you, you will see beach sand sculptures so we do play some role even if it’s small,” he said.

The Covid-19 pandemic has also made South Africa and in turn Durban not an attractive destination for holiday makers.

Wellington Makuru, a bead worker and artist, said the lack of international people has meant adjusting his work for local markets. “All over the country there are people who do this work so someone from Johannesburg is not going to be buying a map of Africa so I need to offer them something distinctly original,” he said.

Makuru said he was hopeful once the Covid-19 pandemic passes, everything will go back to normal.

One restaurant manager who spoke to Weekend Witness but asked not to be named because they were not cleared to speak to the media, said businesses are bleeding. “If this carries on, you are honestly going to get a situation where there are only fast food joints along the promenade because restaurants are not making profit anymore,” they said.

Sipho Kaunda, chairperson of the Economic Development and Planning Committee, said it might take years for the city to recover from the economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

ITH June being designated as youth month, eThekwini Municipality discussed the programmes and initiatives that they have in place which are aimed at enriching the lives of the youth in Durban. eThekwini Municipality’s spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela said programmes such as Business Support and Skills Development ones don’t only focus on providing education, but impart the necessary tools for these youngsters to earn a living.

He added that the metro has invested R17.7 million into youth cooperatives in the agribusiness enterprises sector.

The municipality has recently opened applications for an apprenticeship artisan development programme, which has already seen a thousands of youth benefit from it.

Mayisela said youth development will be among the 50 community organisations that will assisted through the municipality’s Grant in Aid programme.

Other ongoing youth focused programmes include their Entrepreneurship Skills Development programme which aims to equip unemployed youth from uMlazi and KwaMashu with business skills.

“We annually host Youth Business Connect dialogue as part of our Durban Fashion Fair

programme which also aims to empower the youth in fashion and business,” said Mayisela.

In addition to their programmes, the municipality is currently running a #YouthMonth2021 #YouthPower social media campaign where it shares and highlights the young people in Durban from all works of life, who have benefitted from the assistance that the municipality offers.

“This include youth who have benefited via our business financing and workshops, our bursaries and skills development programmes.

“These can be found on our social media platforms. Youth development is spread out in a number of department budgets, as these programmes are not centred around one department,” added Mayisela.

However are these enough? Tongaat youth and community leader Reoul Daniel Alick asked this as he feels that there needs to be an improvement in terms of youth development.

“More learnership programmes and youth empowerment activities and courses need to be taken into consideration. There is not enough of employment especially for our youth,” said Alick.

“Organisations need to work with the government in ensuring better facilities for youth employment, more leadership and courses that are accredited, that can create jobs for the future,” he added.

TO commemorate Youth Day, non-profit organisation SVK Religion Without Borders, together with the youth of the Umhlanga Hindu Society, held a rasam drive for the community of Tongaat.

Both organisations distributed 400 bottles of the immune booster soup to residents of Pension Cottage (municipal housing for the elderly and disabled), Chelmsford Heights, Buffelsdale and Flamingo Heights.

Founder of SVK, Vishnu Naidoo said the drive was held in recognition of the role that youth play in society, amidst deteriorating conditions such as the current third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, increased unemployment rates and stage 2 loadshedding in mid-winter.

“These societies were already facing high unemployment rates, retrenchments, drug and alcohol abuse, single-parent families and low income levels prior to the start of the pandemic and the pandemic has just created more socioeconomic challenges,” said Govender.

“The youth of Umhlanga were made to lead by example in showing our communities what can be achieved through community participation as is evident in our drive. Community assistance is something I have been trying to garner from the very beginning of this organisation,” he added.

OLLWING their successful national screenwriting programme held earlier this year, non-profit organisation the Writers Guild of South Africa (WGSA) together with the Department of Sports Arts and Culture (DSAC) will be conducting another national screenwriting programme that will focus on South African languages.

The course will run from June 25 to 27 at several locations in South Africa. The Durban training session will focus on English and isiZulu, in Middelburg it will be isiNdebele, in Soweto it will be isiZulu, Burgersfort will focus on Sepedi, Klerksdorp and Mmabatho will tackle Setswana, while in Bloemfontein the session will be on Afrikaans and in Qonce (King Williams Town) it will be in isiXhosa Speaking further on this WGSA Professional Development council member, Danile Mohlamme said: “The world, now more than ever, wants stories that echo humanity- stories that come from within our towns and townships, our suburbs and our farms in our spoken languages.

“They want stories that tell of where we live, what we do, how we interact, the triumphs, tribulations and emotions of life that we want to share with the world.”

Interested persons do not need prior writing experience to join the programme, however they do need the drive to learn how to write the professional way and to treat performance writing as an art, craft and business to complete the course fully.

The programme is free for members of WGSA, and attendees of the programme are required to become members. Registration closes on June 23 at noon. The programme will only allow 10 participants per class and all Covid-19 regulations will be followed.

Refreshments and a light lunch will be provided on the Saturday and Sunday dates of the class.

ble that most South Africans were becoming impatient and fatigued by Covid-19 restrictions, Ramaphosa said the constraints have so far proven to be the only effective way to stop the spread of infections.

“Our scientists inform us that it is through our behavior that the virus is spread. We have to act decisively and quickly to save lives,” he said.

The new restrictions, Ramaphosa said, were meant to prevent a situation where the current Covid-19 situation could develop into a health crisis.

“We know from the last two waves of infections that when health

facilities are overwhelmed more lives are lost Our priority now is to make sure that there are enough hospital beds, enough health workers, enough ventilators and enough oxygen to give the best possible care to every person who needs it.”

Ramaphosa also announced that public gatherings would be restricted to 50 people indoors and 100 outdoors.

The new restrictions affected Youth Day celebrations which would have seen Ramaphosa visiting Pietermaritzburg for the main event. His keynote address was delivered virtually.

Protect elders in the community THE Association for the Aged (Tafta) is pleading with members of the public to speak up against elder abuse, especially when vulnerable older people are subject to abuse by close family members.

“For too long now, we’ve seen older people in abuse situations silently endure all manners of abuse from family members. They either seek to protect these abusers from the wrath of the law, or fear consequences of reporting to authorities, such as the loss of care and family connection.

“As a society, we then need to step forward and speak on behalf of these elders who are as vulnerable as defenseless children in the hands of their perpetrators,” said Tafta CEO, Femada Shamam.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, was on 15 June, and the day is set aside by the United Nations globally to unite the whole world in its opposition to the abuse and suffering inflicted on older generations.

The reason for this, according to the UN, is because it is estimated that one in six elders globally experiences some form of abuse in their every-day life, with most of these incidents going unreported.

The theme of this year’s commemoration is “Access to Justice” which serves as a reminder of the importance to fully address the needs of older persons who may seek recourse.

“It is because elders who experience these violent situations, often face multiple barriers in accessing judicial systems as a result of boundaries of affordability, and backlogs in judicial processes, that

many cases remain unreported.”

“It is imperative therefore that when we see any form of abuse take place, that we either intervene personally or contact authorities who will protect the victim from ongoing abuse,” said Shamam.

She stated that this year, the organisation had recognised even lower numbers of cases being reported as older people have been even further challenged to access justice systems as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We also realise that so many have experienced isolation, stress and depression.

And on the whole, family wellbeing - from caregivers to elders in isolation - have all been severely impacted.

But, as a society we must take a step towards recovery, and this year we hope to focus on the little things we can be grateful for, that will contribute to rebuilding ourselves inch by inch. We haven’t lost our ability to smile, the ability to be kind or to show that we care.

And we’re determined to prove through a campaign focusing on familial connections, and mental wellbeing, that an authentic state of happiness is possible, and can help fight depression and other maladies that lead to abuse,” added Shamam.

RESIDENT Cyril Ramaphosa (pictured) on Tuesday reinstated alert level 3 lockdown restrictions in light of the current spike in Covid-19 infections.

Addressing the nation on Tuesday night, Ramaphosa cited the sharp increase in infections in eight of the country’s nine provinces as the main reason behind the government’s decision to introduce stricter Covid-19 regulations.

The new restrictions will see alcohol sales for offsite consumption allowed only between 10 am and 6 pm, from Monday to Thursday, excluding public holidays. Licensed bars, taverns and night clubs would be allowed to sell alcohol for onsite consumption till 9 pm, after which a curfew will be in place between 10 pm and 4 am for non-essential workers.

The tighter restriction come after the country recorded an average of 7 000 new daily infections in recent weeks. In Gauteng, the most affected province, there are currently close to 4 000 Covid-19 patients admitted in hospitals. While it was understanda-

Tongaat Hulett celebrates World Red Cross Day T

HROUGH a partnership with the Red Cross Society, Tongaat Hulett has invested R375 000 towards the establishment of two food security initiatives in KwaZulu-Natal.

The objective of the initiative is to ensure that communities and the volunteers build internal systems that would cushion them against any form of risk or environmental shocks including Covid-19.

The first food security project is based at Macekane at Empangeni. The company in partnership with the Red Cross will assist with the provision of the much-needed equipment for the project.

The second project is based at Obanjeni and it has been established mainly by the Red Cross volunteers. This project has been allocated R252 000 which will be utilised towards the initiation of the project.

The Covid-19 pandemic remains a health and humanitarian crisis that has threatened the food security of many households in the communities where the company operates. People in the majority

of the impoverished communities that were already experiencing food insecurity and hunger are now at a breaking point. To provide short-term relief, on World Red Cross Day, volunteers prepared lunch for the Shewula residents in Tongaat, who did not know where their next meal would come from. Nazoke Solutions donated all the food supplies. Approximately 100 people including children and adults were fed by the volunteers.

The Red Cross volunteers have played an invaluable role since South Africa first went on lockdown in March 2020. The volunteers have ensured that indigent households were identified in the various municipalities and coordinated intervention efforts between government, communities and private sector organisations. They also ensured that there was no duplication of effort.

To commemorate World Red Cross Day, Tongaat Hulett also partnered with the KZN Red Cross Society to support two indigent households in the Magwaveni area of

Tongaat.

The first household had three family members including an elderly woman who was the head of the household and supporting the family using her state pension.

The second household had nine family members including an elderly woman who was also the head of the household and supporting the family. Both the Red Cross Society members and Tongaat Hulett representatives donated non-perishable food items to the two families.

Through Tongaat Hulett’s partnership with the Red Cross, a total of 3 000 food parcels, to the value of R1.3 million, were distributed in KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and Cape Town in 2020. During the distribution of the food parcels, the Red Cross representatives facilitated engagements between the community leadership, Tongaat Hulett and government. These engagements assisted with the identification of the most vulnerable households in the targeted provinces and communities. The Red Cross management also ensured that sufficient vol-

Child protection a growing concern JYOTHI LALDAS

“I

T is our responsibility as adults to protect children and keep them safe from harm.”

These are the words of a senior social worker who says cases of child neglect are rapidly increasing.

Speaking to the Weekly recently, KwaDukuza Child Welfare Society’s Amy Sentoo said incidents of small children being left alone in their homes by parents or caregivers are a major concern.

She said they had seen an increase in these cases since the outbreak of Covid-19 with reports coming in daily.

“This is a major issue that has become more prevalent over the past year. We have people reporting cases of children being left alone in their homes while parents go out.

“We have seen cases where a seven-year-old is left at home to take care of a toddler and an infant.

“The majority of the cases involve very young children.”

She said cases have been reported by neighbours and in some cases even fathers.

“We have had fathers bring their children in because the mothers leave them alone in the house and go to work or worse go out drinking.

“This has been a big one for us.

We have seen many such cases.”

Sentoo said their main concern is the safety of the children as many are left with no food and water in dangerous conditions.

“We have found children left in one-room shacks with no food and water and nowhere to go to the bathroom. Sometimes there is a bucket for them, sometimes not and they are forced to live like this in their own mess.

“They are even left alone at night

in dangerous situations with candles and paraffin lamps or gas stoves which are completely unsafe for them to operate.”

There have been numerous cases across the country where children who were left alone had died often due to fires.

In April, a three-year-old girl died in a house fire at Siyathuthuka township in Belfast, Mpumalanga.

“Reports indicate that the victim and her siblings, aged seven and nine, were left alone by their mother in the shack where they stay.

“When she returned home, she found the shack engulfed in flames and immediately called for help.

“The other two children managed to escape the fire unharmed, except the three-year-old,” the South African Police Services (SAPS) said in a statement.

A case of culpable homicide was opened against the woman with an additional charge of child neglect.

In another incident in August last year, two children were killed in a shack fire at the Ramaphosa informal settlement in Ekurhuleni, Gauteng, while the mother was allegedly drinking at a shebeen.

The two children aged two and four died, while their eight-year-old brother managed to escape the inferno, with severe burn wounds, News24 reported.

It has been reported in the media that Childline is also seeing an increase in such cases and receives around 50 calls a day.

Most calls came from children aged between 10 and 11 years old.

According to Childline, some mothers move to different places leaving their children alone for two weeks at a time.

While, in South Africa there is no specific legal age where a child can

be left alone, Section 28 of the South African Constitution says that every child (persons under the age of 18) is entitled to “be protected from maltreatment, neglect, abuse, or degradation” and “not be required or permitted to perform work or provide services that are inappropriate for a person of that child’s age or risk the child’s well-being, education, physical or mental health, or spiritual, moral, or social development”.

Parents or caregivers whose children come to harm while left alone can be charged for child neglect, according to the SAPS. Should you come across such a situation, you can find an institution that can investigate the issue further.

This can be Child Welfare, the SAPS or a provincial Department of Social Development.

Pillay said: “Both teams created goal scoring opportunities, but Tongaat and Newlands defenders played very well.”

Pillay said that he is very proud of his players. He added the community came out to support the teams in their numbers.

Rooted in new research commissioned by the Dove self-esteem project, the film undoes the emotional and physical stages of posting a selfie; highlighting how editing tools — once only available to the professionals — can now be accessed by young people at the touch of a button without regulation. And, rather than models on set, it’s girls in their bedrooms filtering away their identities.

The research highlights some major issues that girls face around the world.

“We would like to raise awareness about the importance of having conversations with the young people in your life about self-esteem and digital distortion in social media.

Girls with lower body esteem are more likely to use an app or filter to change an aspect of their body than girls with higher body esteem.

Girls with lower body esteem distort their photos more before posting on social media than girls with high body esteem.

Importantly, the research revealed that SA girls said that if images on social media were more representative of the way girls look in everyday life, they would feel more confident.

According to the research, 81% of girls wish the world would focus more on who they are instead of what they look like; 78% of girls wish social media would be more representative of different types of beauty; while 60% of girls feel that influencers or celebrities should have to tell followers when their photos have been edited on social media
