Man shot during robbery at ATM WEEKLY REPORTER

A

MAN was shot during a robbery outside an ATM in Tongaat on Monday morning.

Several emergency services and police attended the scene where a 67year-old man was threatened with firearms by four unknown men.

Tongaat police confirmed that the man was robbed of an undisclosed amount and his bag containing his bank card and personal documents.

opened fire on the victim, who sustained a gunshot wound to his right thigh.

He was treated on scene by members of Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) and then transported to hospital for further care. Once stabilised the patient was transported to hospital for further care.

Rusa spokesperson, Prem Balram said: “According to witnesses three men dressed in blue overalls were seen approaching a customer as he was about to enter the bank. After they failed

to catch up to him they turned to customers waiting in line to use the ATM. One suspect asked the victim to hand over his valuables when a shot went off.”

Rusa further adds that a witness reported that the men got away but the some witnesses reported that a blue VW Polo sped off from the scene while other reports indicated that the getaway vehicle was a blue Hyundai. A 9mm cartridge was recovered at the scene.

Tongaat police are currently investigating the case of armed robbery.

ONE of three suspects in connection to a house robbery was arrested by Verulam police recently.

Three men allegedly broke into the victim’s house in the early hours of March 3, and threatened the woman with a firearm. They allegedly robbed her off her television and fled on foot.

One of the suspects was known to the victim, upon investigating the scene and receiving information on the whereabouts of the known suspect, detectives arrested the man on a premises where he was hiding in and will be appearing in court shortly.

The acting Station Commander Colonel Rhendeke Dhalumka applauded the team for the quick arrest of the suspect.

“We will be making every endeavour to arrest the two wanted suspects that are on the run and we are appealing to the community to give us information on criminals committing crime especially our serious and violent crimes by contacting the police,” said Dhalumka.

TONGAAT police are currently investigating a case of murder, after the driver of an e-hailing service died last Wednesday, March 3.

According to provincial police spokesperson, Captain Nqobile Gwala, the driver (27) was allegedly called out to the Magwaveni area in Tongaat to pick up a client on February 22 at 10.20 pm.

“While he was waiting for the client an unknown man showed up and fired shots towards him. He sustained gunshot wounds to the abdomen and body,” said Gwala.

The driver was taken to hospital for medical attention and eventually died on Wednesday,

Speaking on senseless acts of violence, chairman of the Tongaat CPF, Nazir Sadack said: “It’s sad when somebody loses their life for no reason and there’s senseless violence involved. I think our justice system is letting us down.

“SAP would track and arrest the suspects, and they would get to court and they get off very lightly or get bail.

“They then abscond bail and move on to another province.

“The community needs to put pressure on the justice system in terms of serving out more harsh sentences.

“I think government needs to start stepping in and making sure that SAP have got the resources and the equipment to continue their work and making sure these perpetrators are brought to book.”

A SPATE of rock throwing incidents occurred over the weekend on the North Coast.

Reaction Unit South Africa’s (Rusa) reported several incidents, including an ambulance responding to a medical emergency in Tongaat a few kilometres before King Shaka International Airport and a motorist who was attacked by the hurling rocks while travelling on the Oakford Road between Oaklands and Redcliffe in Verulam.

Rusa spokesperson, Prem Balram said they were called out to a scene on Sunday evening in Verulam where they found two alleged suspects being assaulted after they were caught by passing motorists.

“The suspects, prior to the arrest, had damaged three vehicles with stones and fled to a nearby informal settlement. A small group of men pursued them and eventu-

ally apprehended two. A third suspect managed to evade arrest,” said Balram.

Speaking on these incidents, Verulam police spokesperson, Captain Henry Kisten said that they received complaints and police were dispatched to the areas, however no cases were opened or arrests made.

According to the chairperson of the Tongaat Community Police Forum, Nazir Sadack, he said that rock throwing incidents on the North Coast are sporadic and occur from time to time, and is more frequent closer to central Durban.

“I think it’s mischievous people who have nothing to do. It’s not on the increase but you do get them sporadically. You would probably find for months when nothing would happen, and you would have one or two isolated cases.

“A few years ago we had them on the increase, where it would happen almost daily, or every other day on the freeway N2, near Ballito etc,” said Sadack.

ESIDENTS of Verulam have endured three weeks of suffering as the installation of fibre cables in the Brindhaven area has caused continuous water and electricity interruptions.

Chairman of the Brindhaven Civic Association, Vischal Dhudibal said that the area is an eyesore, comparing the trenches being dug to a warzone.

He said that one of the burst water pipes, caused by alleged shoddy workmanship, caused a house to be flooded.

“These guys did a makeshift job yesterday [Monday], water started gushing this morning [Tuesday], and into

the guy’s property and garage,” said Dhudibal.

He further adds that in the three weeks of installation, he had received over 50 complaints from residents, which included water and electrical outages.

He said that the contractors assigned to the task are digging the trenches and hitting electricity cables or water pipes.

“After filling trenches, there is rubble lying around, and [they] are dumping it in any vacant spot they can find,” he added.

Dhudibal added that he wrote to both the mayor’s office and city manager, and was informed that eThekwini Municipality was inundated with

complaints from civic associations regarding the shoddy work done by these contractors.

Hoping to ease the tension of residents, eThekwini’s Municipality’s spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela said: “We have had a number of reports regarding the digging of fibre optic cables by private companies having caused a lot of disruption. One of the biggest challenges encountered by the municipality is how these companies do not report any municipal cables or pipes they damage in the process.

“Problems are only identified at night when streetlights do not turn on or when residents report water outages. Teams will be sent out to investigate and address the problem.”

Uncle gets life imprisonment for rape THE Verulam Regional Court sentenced a 37-year-old man to life imprisonment for the rape of his 10-year-old niece in May 2019 in the Cornubia area of Verulam.

The child lived with her father, siblings and granny. The accused came to live with them when he was released from prison after serving a sentence for housebreaking and theft.

He slept downstairs while the child and her family slept upstairs. On the night of the incident, the accused returned home after a night of drinking with friends. He found the child’s father sleeping downstairs. He then went upstairs to fetch his bedding and that is when he raped the child. He immediately left the house.

The child then woke her sister who

was sleeping next to her and she told her what had happened. The sister told her to go back to sleep. They reported the incident to their granny the next morning and the child was taken to the Thuthuzela Care Centre based at the Mahatma Gandhi Hospital where she received post trauma services.

The uncle did not return home and only went to the police to seek refuge when he heard that the angry community was looking for him. The police arrested him, realising that he was a suspect.

In court, the accused denied the rape and presented an alibi in his defence.

He said he had been drinking on the night of the incident and was never on the scene of crime.

However, the prosecutor, Ishara

Sewnarayan, led the child’s evidence regarding the uncle’s identity as she had seen him when he switched on the room light. During cross examination, the state was able to refute the alibi and placed him on the crime scene. Also, his friend testified that on the night of the incident, he left his company for a while.

Sewnarayan handed in a Victim Impact Statement compiled by the child and facilitated by the Court Preparation Officer, Bongiwe Qwabe.

In her statement the child said, “After the incident, I had to move to a new area, leaving my school and friends behind. I am struggling to cope. Also, some people have said that I am bewitched and dirty after this incident.”

R20 million relief fund for KZN tourism MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs in KwaZulu-Natal, Ravi Pillay, will launch a R20 million Tourism Relief Fund later this month as a lifeline for some 400 small businesses that are in dire financial straits as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The fund was announced by Premier Sihle Zikalala in his State of the Province address.

This fund will grant R50 000 for successful applicants. Chris Phili, a tourism business owner and chair of the Clermont Community Tourism Offices (CTO) outside Durban, and chairman of the

Community Tourism Association, said the R50 000 grant will enable businesses to meet their overheads and pay their staff for three months.

Phili said his business was one of some 607 businesses in KwaZulu-Natal that received the national tourism relief fund, which helped to pay suppliers, staff and office staff.

“All that was required is proper accounts to be submitted,” he said, adding “these lifelines can mean a lot to very small businesses”.

In the past year the R200 million National Tourism relief has supported some 4 000 businesses across South Africa.

Heather Hunter, chairperson of the uMhlanga Tourism Association, said that being in Level 1 will boost confidence among potential tourists. But Peter Rose, an uMhlanga guest house owner, said many tourists were still uncertain, “booking for the weekend and not much further”.

Durban-based B&B owner, Nokuthula Bond said the industry would take years to recover. She said that the Tourism Relief Fund was much-needed but that tourism businesses needed to prepare for the coming third or fourth waves of the virus.

OTH gym facilities and gym-goers have suffered due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which saw some gyms temporarily close under the regulations of the national lockdown last March.

The lockdown had even restricted residents from exercise in their communities. Over the months, the restrictions slowly eased to allow residents to walk, run and cycle.

Gyms and other sporting facilities were only allowed to reopen in August, under level 2 regulations.

Since then, gyms had to stagger their patrons and ensure proper protocols were followed.

According to Ash Pillay, the owner of Elim Fitness Club on the North Coast, his facility saw a 25% drop in client base, but after some time, that figure changed to approximately 10%.

He claims that this feat was due the gym’s customer loyalty, which saw them erase their client’s debts of an amount of approximately R8 million, and the fact that the gym has proven to be a safe and comfortable place to exercise.

Pillay says that in terms of Covid-19 procedures, the 2000 square metre facility has two screening booths, 12 sanitisation stations and

they ensure patrons keep a distance of at least two metres from each other.

One gym goer who frequents a mainstream gym, Saren Govender, said that the gym is never at full capacity.

Sharing his experience at the facility he said: “My gym has a requirement to check body temperature before you go inside. Inside the gym the equipment is spread out to cover the recommended distance rule. They have sanitisation zones which have equipment disinfectant and hand sanitiser which you can use yourself. They also have masked staff members who also come around and sanitise the equipment as much as possible.”

Not all gyms were lucky enough to make it out of the pandemic in one piece, as another gymgoer, Annie Reddy explains. She said that due to the gym she frequents being closed during the lockdown, the owner had to shut down completely due to being unable to afford the facility anymore.

Over the lockdown period, Reddy had to adapt to walking instead.

“Gym life is a better life than walking, because it gives you a more strenuous workout. At the gym there are weights, treadmills, and classes, and also your body has more intense training when you’re at the gym,” she said.

KSA nationals an overwhelming success ALMOST 400 of the top karate fighters and several Protea athletes converged on the shores of KZN to fight for the top honours at the Tongaat sports centre this past weekend.

The iconic sports venue was geared up with the strictest of Covid-19 combat compliance protocols, as well as bi-hourly checks conducted by local police, who expressed their total endorsement of the event.

Protea fighters provided the fireworks during the two-day event with team KZN finishing on top of the medal count (gold, silver and bronze) and team Gauteng coming a close second.

“Sadly, there were no spectators allowed into the auditorium in view of the strict Covid-19 protocols, I am so sad that I couldn’t watch my daughter Orissa win a gold medal.

“However I do respect that the pandemic has changed the very fabric of daily life,”said Revs Naidoo, father of the champion.

President of KSA, Hanshi Sonny Pillay said: “This Nationals 2021 remains a historical event conducted during Covid-19 times with the strictest of protocols in place.”

Karate KZN president Ben Mare and tournament director Leo Cuitto, both expressed their delight at the high standard exhibited by the fighters throughout the championships.

SYSTEM designed to protect the rights of animals, the SPCA’s core focus is the welfare of animals and the instances of cruelty they face.

However, in the case of animal attacks on humans, what reach does the SPCA have? Unfortunately, dependant on the municipal by-laws, the SPCA’s actions are limited.

Tanya Fleischer, marketing manager of the Durban and Coast SPCA, said: “We often receive calls to get involved when a dog has bitten a human being, however contrary to popular belief the SPCA is not involved in dog attacks on humans.”

She further clarifies that in these cases, if the welfare of the animal is a concern, then the SPCA can get involved.

“The SPCA only get involved if the owner of the dog who has bitten a human being requests for us to collect the dog for humane euthanasia,” said Fleischer.

Manager of Kloof and Highway SPCA, Barbara Patrick added that they only attend to scenes of animal attacks if a member of the public needs to control or remove the animal, or if they assist eThekwini Metro Police at a scene.

“The Kloof and Highway SPCA and inspectorate department have dealt with heart-breaking and gruesome cases however we are not at liberty to discuss the details of these investigations due to their sensitive nature,” said Patrick.

She adds that when they are called to remove or control dangerous or aggressive animals, they make the decision to humanely euthanise

the animal.

“This decision is never made based on the breed of the dog, it is based on the fact that once a dog has bitten/killed a person or animal, it may happen again and its irresponsible to allow this to happen,” said Patrick.

In the event that a member of the public is faced with an aggressive or dangerous animal, Patrick advises the person does not run or scream, but instead retreat slowly away to a safe space and put a physical barrier between them and the animal and then to call their local SPCA for assistance.

For people who have pets and want to prevent them from any possible incidents in the future, Patrick suggests that ensuring pets are trained at reputable schools or trainers.

“Ensure your property is well fenced and ensuring your pet is not placed in any situations where it feels threatened. Your pet should always be a part of your family, well socialised, loved, treated with care and well looked after.

Using pets as guard dogs, or training to attack can cause harm to a stranger or family member if they surprise or scare a pet,” added Patrick.

In the event were an animal has caused injury to a person, Fleischer states that the injured party would have the following options: - A charge against the owner of the animal in terms of The Animal Matters Amendment Act 42 of 1993. (investigated by SAPS) - A charge in terms of the City By Laws - these do vary according to the Municipality which governs that area. (investigated by Metro Police) - A civil case, in which the injured party could sue the owner of the animal and claim damages. (dealt with by private attorney).

THE Writers Guild of South Africa (WGSA) is bringing a unique opportunity to aspiring Tongaat writers with a three-day skills development programme.

WGSA together with the Department of Sports Art and Culture and the National Arts Council, are set to launch this programme on a national level where their trainers will teach the basics of short film screenwriting.

Speaking further on this, Anil Polton of WGSA said: “The world, now more than ever, wants stories that echo humanity – stories that come from within our small towns our townships, our suburbs and our farms. Audiences seek stories that speak of the need to understand the human element and to be understood. They want stories that tell of where we live, what we do, how we interact and the triumphs and tribulations of life that we want to share with the world.”

The programme is scheduled to take place in Tongaat Central from Tuesday, March 16 to Thursday, March 18.

Interested persons don’t need prior writing programmes to join the programme, however they do need a drive to learn how to write the professional way and to treat creative writing as a business and a craft.

The programme is for members of WGSA, and attendees of the programme are required to become members (annual membership fee applies).

The WGSA is a non-profit organisation (NPO) and a public benefit organisation (PBO) that operates within the local film, television, radio, stage, animation, and new media (internet).

“Our mission is to protect, empower and develop performance writers. Performance writing entails writing stories or pieces to be acted out live or filmed for a mediums such as television, cinema or as described above,” said Polton.
