HE Shridi Sai Avatar Shrine of Blessings, which is based at 54 Hercus Avenue in Belvedere, recently conducted their annual feeding.

The outreach programme, which has been in existence for the past five years, saw the organisation feed approximately 250 people in the community of Frasers.

The organisation will not be conducting any feedings at present due to the rise in Covid19 infections. However, they will monitor the situation and arrange their next feeding accordingly.

AYS without electricity plagued residents of Umdloti and Belgate during their holidays due to several electrical faults.

This is according to ward councillor Geoff Pullan, who stated that residents in these areas endured between two and five days with a lack of electricity.

He further added that visitors to the Umdloti area had to leave the beach town prematurely because of these conditions.

Pullan said that the main cable in the Umdloti mini substation was burned out completely and required replacement, while two others had to be repaired with new parts.

He queried with the municipality if the outages were related to a mixture of higher demand, maintenance issues and corrosion, but received no response to date.

In the Belgate area, Pullan revealed that the mini substation had to be replaced after residents in the areas reported hearing a loud bang which was followed by the power going off.

Here residents went without electricity for three days.

While these incidents have been resolved, but the fear of more rolling outages are imminent.

Pullan said: “Even this morning [yesterday] the whole of Tongaat South was off. We still haven’t been given a reason why. The lack of information from Officials is frustrating, as the public expect councillors to know why the power is off.”

According to Pullan, some of the concerns that stem from the outages are the efficiency of water and sewer pumps, food wastage as residents stocked up both during festive season and at the end of December due to lockdown level three, the excessive electrical consumption causing strain on infrastructure and the effect these outages will have on local business.

Pullan suggests that in order to aid and sustain future tourism in the area, the infrastructure needs to undergo upgrades- which can in turn be used as an advertising point for potential tourists.

Driver shot in alleged hijacking IN the early hours of last Wednesday, Netcare 911 responded to reports of a shooting at a petrol station on Aurora Drive in Umhlanga Ridge.

On arrival medics found an adult male driver who had sustained two gunshot wounds.

It was alleged that the patient was involved in an attempted hijacking at an unknown loca-

tion when he was shot.

The man then drove to the petrol station in search for help.

The patient was treated and stabilised by an advanced life support paramedic before being transported to hospital for further care.

NAC makes Covid-19 related appeal WEEKLY REPORTER LOCAL NPO, the Northern Action Committee (NAC) are endeavouring to obtain sponsors in cash or kind for the purchase of Oxygen Concentrators, Pulse Oximeters and Thermometers, for the sole purpose and use of the residents of Tongaat, in case of emergencies.

A recently conducted survey by the NAC in Tongaat showed that many families are facing massive hardship during this pandemic.

NAC seeks to continuously help the less privileged and is committed to social upliftment and charitable outreach programmes, working with needy families in Tongaat and surrounding areas. NAC is a non-political, voluntary, non-prejudicial group aiming at sustaining maximum community involvement in local affairs for the benefit of all in need.

HILDREN from the Tongaat area received a treat recently, thanks to the Unity in Community drive held by Sri Vishnu Kutambhakam (SVK) - Religion Without Borders.

According to the founder of the organisation, Vishnu Govender, the purpose of the drive was to uplift the spirits of the youth during the Covid19 pandemic.

Keeping in accordance with the pandemic protocols, the organisation gave the children fresh meals in disposable containers and party packs of stationery and snacks.

Speaking on the purpose to uplift their youth’s spirits, Govender said: “Why do you

need to be pleasant within? The answer is selfevident. When you are in a pleasant inner state you are naturally pleasant to everyone and everything around you. No scripture or philosophy is needed to instruct you to be good to others. It is a natural outcome when you are feeling good within yourself. Inner pleasantness is a sure-fire insurance for the making of a peaceful society and a joyful world.”

“Besides your success in the world depends essentially on how well you harness the prowess of the body and mind. So, in order to achieve success, pleasantness has to be the fundamental quality within you.

“Above all there is substantial medical and scientific evidence today that your body and mind function at their best when you are in a pleasant state. My hope and wish is that all those who wish to serve our society tomorrow are in a state of inner pleasantness,” said Govender.

SVK began their work decades ago by servicing the religious needs of communities all over the province. After registering as an NPO, the organisation now operates in areas where social ills are abundant.

The organisation’s services include legal services, psycho-social support, prayer, nutritional support, community support, community education, and sports coaching.

Looking at their plans for 2021, the organisation hopes to be able to provide food and hampers on a constant monthly basis for the community and a potential hamper drive for Easter.

A

T the end of 2020, President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation and informed the country that due to the second wave of Covid-19 infections, the country had return to lockdown level 3.

Due to this, the municipality’s cleansing and solid waste department (DSW) informed residents that they will continue regular waste collection as per the normal collection schedules.

This comes as a relief as PR councillor of Tongaat and member of the eThekwini Executive Committee, Yogis Govender, states that collections in the North have suffered occasional, yet far reaching, disruptions.

“In eThekwini, DSW has had several

Covid-19 outbreaks which has had a severe impact on service delivery. The schedules changed with DSW working overtime to clear the backlog,”said Govender.

“As councillors we urge the public to report uncollected refuse and illegal dumping.”

The city has in place necessary precautions and requests residents to strictly abide by them. Below are the measures: • All garden drop off sites will strictly operate from 7 am to 2 pm until January 15 (subject to review thereafter). Residents are encouraged during this time to: reduce the generation of this waste stream by limiting cutting, pruning etc. and reuse through home scale composting.

• The Buffelsdraai Landfill will operate between 7am to 5pm (Normal Permit Times).

• Residents using any of the waste facilities are kindly required to comply with all Covid-19 protocols as directed by site staff. No mask means no entry.

Touching on the issue of garden refuse, Govender says that the collection of garden refuse is also a function of DSW, provided that the refuse is properly bagged.

“There have been numerous failures by DSW to provide bags for recycling as well. The plastic and recyclables found in our streams and beaches is catastrophic and DSW must invest in innovate ways to manage waste like automated buy back stations etc,” added Govender.

As the risk of spreading Covid-19 is currently high, Govender makes an appeal

to the public to seal any refuse properly to avoid spread or cross contamination.

Residents are reminded to have all personal hygiene and sanitary products double bagged without compressing the waste.

In addition to requiring households with Covid-19 positive people or people in mandatory quarantine to take precautionary measures when handling their waste, it is appropriate that all citizens are encouraged to follow instructions on safe handling for collection, in particular: •All personal waste (including masks and handkerchiefs) should be collected in a disposable plastic garbage bag (Bag1).

•When it is about three-quarters full, Bag 1 should be firmly closed, leaving as little air in it as possible.

Bag 1 should be placed in a second bag (Bag 2).

• Bag 2 should not be too full in order to ensure that it can be firmly closed and does not break; the waste should not be pressed with hands to make additional space.

• People should wash their hands or disinfect them before and after manipulating the waste bags, and in particular directly before and after closing Bag 2.

• Bag 2 should be firmly closed before being delivered for collection.

•Pets should be kept away from waste bags.

DSW will update the residents of eThekwini on any changes as it unfolds.

Businesses to renew license in order to continue operating THE eThekwini Municipality’s Business Licensing Department is encouraging all businesses to renew their operating licenses by no later than January 31, in order to continue conducting business for the year.

This procedure is conducted annually and is very critical under Section 15 of the Businesses Regulations in terms of the Business Act 71 of 1991.

The Act requires that every license holder must every year confirm that the business for which the license was issued, is continuing to be conducted from the premises specified in the license. And that no other business for which a license is required in terms of the Act is being conducted from the same licensed premises.

The Municipality’s Head of Business Support, Tourism and Markets Unit, Thulani Nzama said licenses are valid for a calendar year.

“Renewal is a statutory requirement and ensures compliance as well as proper management of businesses. The business licenses that need to be renewed are within the sectors of Food Establishments (ITEM 1) and Health or Entertainment Facilities (ITEM 2).”

Businesses can renew licenses via the Licensing online portal under e-services on the Municipality’s website: www.durban.gov.za or alternatively visit their nearest Business Licensing Offices, where they initially applied for the trading license.

Industries and traders are

urged to start the renewal process while there is still ample time because after the deadline, License Inspectors with other law enforcement agencies will be conducting random inspections to all businesses that did not renew to enforce compliance. Those found to be in contravention of the Act will be prosecuted. They can be issued with summons and their licenses subsequently withdrawn after due processes have been invoked.

Little trust in VACCINE S

OUTH Africa plans to vaccinate 67% of the population — some 38 million citizens — against the coronavirus before the end of 2021.

But the latest global survey shows that only 53% of South Africans would gladly accept the Covid19 jab. Like the virus itself, perceptions around the pandemic, containment measures and, ultimately, the administering of a vaccine are constantly evolving. But South Africa lags far behind the global curve, not only in the acquisition of Covid19 vaccines, but also in perceptions around the effectiveness and safety of immunisations.

These shifting attitudes have been detailed by global market researchers Ipsos, as part of a survey

series conducted for the World Economic Forum.

The latest survey, conducted in mid-December, shows that South Africa’s willingness to accept a Covid-19 vaccine was eroding up to mid-December.

While this gradual trend is recognised as a global phenomenon, South Africans are, according to the Ipsos poll, far below the global average of persons who would accept the Covid-19 vaccine.

Out of 15 countries surveyed in December, an average of 65% of respondents said they were ready to accept a Covid-19 vaccine.

In South Africa, only 53% of respondents said they would take the jab. This level of vaccine mistrust is only beaten by respondents in Rus-

sia (43%) and France (40%).

The Ipsos survey, which has been extended to more than 50 000 participants since July, also shows a higher degree of degradation in South Africans’ confidence about the development and distribution of Covid-19 vaccines.

In October, 68% of South African respondents said they would accept a Covid-19 vaccine if it were offered.

The change in perceptions — with willing participants dropping by 15 percentage points in December — is the biggest swing recorded in the global survey.

While the survey shows clear division in public opinion regarding vaccines, it also exposes extreme polarisation in SA. Most South Africans either

strongly agree or strongly disagree with the getting the Covid-19 vaccine. Those who adopt a more considered approach, either somewhat agreeing or somewhat disagreeing, are in the minority.

Additionally, 26% of all South African respondents are strongly opposed to taking the Covid-19 vaccine, while 25% are determined to get the jab as soon as possible.

Of the 47% of South African respondents who said they would refuse a Covid-19 vaccine, 65% cited concern surrounding the treatment’s potential side effects. This worry is, by far, the most commonly mentioned cause for vaccine refusal on a global scale.

But South Africans cite “being against vaccines in general” as a

reason to resist inoculation more than any other country surveyed, bar respondents in Russia.

Additionally, a quarter of South African respondents said they wouldn’t take the vaccine because they thought “it would be ineffective” in preventing coronavirus infection.

Respondents in China, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Mexico, and Australia are most willing to accept a Covid-19 vaccine.

Countries surveyed alongside South Africa in the latest Ipsos poll include Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, South Korea, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
