Man fined for changing price tag PURNAL POONUSAMY >>Purnal.Poonusamy@media24.com A VERULAM man was recently fined R8000 for defrauding a retail store, by changing the barcode of an item he purchased.

In August 2020, the man purchased a pressure cleaner, but had placed a barcode sticker on top of the cleaner’s original barcode and paid for the item at a cheaper price.

The man’s actions were noticed by a security guard, who approached and questioned the man following the transaction. The man admitted to his actions and was then arrested and charged for fraud.

The man recently appeared in court for his trial and was found guilty of committing fraud.

He was then fined R8 000 or given the option of three months imprisonment, which will be suspended for a period of three years on condition that he is not found guilty of the same offence during that period, Verulam police spokesperson, Captain Henry Kisten said that the sentence should serve as a warning or deterrent to the community, especially shoppers at retail stores trying to change price tags or bar codes if caught committing

crimes of this nature will be arrested, charged and face criminal prosecution with a jail sentence or an option of an hefty fine.

Fraud has proven to be a major problem in the Verulam area, as Kisten says that they receive a number of cases.

On the north coast, for this year, police from both Tongaat and Verulam has seen a number of scams and fraudulent incidents.

A Tongaat man was swindled of R40 000 when trying to by a motor vehicle. Tongaat police also received reports of victims are allegedly being approached while using the ATM and having their bank cards are swapped. In Verulam, police received reports of online scams, money market transfer scams, sim swaps, and ATM frauds.

Kisten said: “Communities must guard against this. They must verify all the information before making any deposits. At the ATMs, communities must be secretive when punching in their pin codes to make withdrawals and do not accept help from strangers when requiring assistance at the ATM. “Even when making money market transfers at retail stores, communities must guard and not expose their pin code.”

OLLOWING the killing of an alleged taxi boss in Tongaat last week, the South African National Taxi Association (Santaco)’s provincial office manager, Sifiso Shangase said that there is a cause for concern within the entire province regarding violence in the taxi industry.

On Thursday (April 29) Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) reported that a taxi boss was shot and killed in Burbreeze, Tongaat.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbele said that Tongaat police attended to a complaint of murder and found the body of a man (57) who sustained two gunshot wounds on his chest and arm.

“It is alleged that victim was at his place of residence when he was fatally shot by unknown suspect who fled the scene in his getaway vehicle,” said Mbele.

While the motive for killing is unknown, this marks the third killing of taxi-related personnel in Tongaat for the year so far. On February 22 an e-hailing driver, (27) who was called out to Magwaveni to pick up a client, was shot while waiting for the client and died in hospital on March 3. Then on March 12, a taxi owner (29) was gunned down in his Magwaveni home.

Tongaat CPF chairperson Nazir Sadack said: “It is very concerning that these incidents are taking place, and it seems to be on the rise in the Tongaat area. So, it is looking likely that there is some kind of turf war that is brewing. At this stage it is an active investigation. However, it is concerning that these drive by shootings is on the increase, and it is just a matter of time before a member of the public, an innocent person, or an innocent child gets injured or, God-forbid, killed in one of these drive by shootings.

So, I am hoping the authorities take this seriously, investigate and try and put a stop to this.”

Previously, Sadack noted that several taxi-related incidents took place in the Tongaat area in Magwaveni, on the R614 towards Isinembe, Hambanathi and near a school in Fairbreeze.

Shangase said that the leadership of Santaco believe that the unrest was caused by power dynamics that have come into play, and are planning to speed up the process of elections.

“We have been requested, to speed up the election, probably with such an intervention we will be able to reduce these high killings of individuals, because people are forming factions now for them to be in power, others have been able to identify individuals who could be a threat to them in terms of leadership, hence we are now saying let’s speed up the process,” said Shangase.

They believe that when democracy unfolds, it does not have to lead to individuals killing each other, as persons would then be able to persuade others in terms of their own vision, on how the taxi industry moves forward.

Verulam police secure convictions IN the past month, Verulam police detectives were able to secure a number of convictions for crimes committed in the area.

One of these praiseworthy convictions was regarding a carjacking that took place in May 2020, in the Zwelisha area.

It is alleged that a man driving his company vehicle was delivering bread in the area, when he was approached by an armed suspect who forced him out of the vehicle and then drove off.

A case of carjacking was reported, and the docket was open for investigation. The detective liaised with his informer which led to the arrest of the carjacker, who was then charged and appeared in court and remanded back in custody pending his next court hearing. On April 22, the accused appeared at the Verulam Regional Court and was found guilty and sentenced to 10 years Imprisonment of which two years was suspended for a period of five years

In a second incident, which also occurred in Zwelisha, a case of murder was investigated after a woman was stabbed multiple times by another

known woman in September 2018.

The victim was taken to hospital where she had succumbed to her injuries. The case docket for murder was investigated by a Verulam detective who conducted interviews of witnesses and other gathering of evidence. The attacker was arrested and charged. Bail was opposed when the woman appeared in court and she was remanded to Westville prison.

On April 22, the woman appeared at the Verulam Regional Court for her trial and was found guilty of murder, She received a sentence of 12 year imprisonment, of which three years was suspended for a period of five years, which means the accused will serve a period of nine years in jail.

The station commander, Brigadier Victor Dludla complimented the respective detectives for conducting their investigations in a very exemplary manner, thus ensuring successful prosecutions.

Child protection comes first

Man rescued from Oakford cliff after 12-hour wait WEEKLY REPORTER A MAN (58) who spent more than 12 hours on an Ezindlovini cliff in Oakford was rescued on Tuesday afternoon.

North Coast emergency service, Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) received calls from the community members on Tuesday morning requesting assistance.

On arrival in Oakford, Rusa members proceeded to the location and spoke to the man, who was blocked by vegetation and was physically unreachable at that point.

Rusa spokesperson Prem Balram said: “The individual explained that he was injured and was stuck in a bush on the face of the cliff.

Rusa members later established that the man was drinking alcohol on Monday night, at about 11pm, when he slipped while walking on the embankment above the cliff.

HE separation of children from their parents can be emotionally strenuous for all parties involved, but what happens when a parent is concerned about their child’s well-being while under the care of the other parent?

Speaking to the Weekly, a parent who did not wished to be named, was concerned about their child who was in the care of the other parent.

According to the parent, they have reason to believe their child is being exposed to unsavoury elements such as marijuana being smoked in the presence of the child [an act which is illegal], and ‘inappropriate’ relations the parents kept; and was unsure how to proceed with reporting the matter and to who.

According to Child and Family Welfare societies on the North Coast, if a child is exposed to elements that pose a danger to them, it should be reported immediately. Social workers will then conduct an investigation to ensure the safety of the child.

However, if the danger relates to abuses, then the matter should be reported directly to the police for investigation. Proof such as marks on the body, photos taken, recordings, the child’s statement, medical reports can be given to police.

Manager of the Tongaat Child Welfare Jo Moodley said that a case will be opened with the police and an investigation conducted.

The child will then be counselled and if anything serious comes to light, a report will be forwarded to the investigating officer to be taken to court, to open a criminal case.

Speaking on receiving reports of parental concern, spokesperson of the Verulam police, Captain Henry Kisten said: “We do receive cases of this nature and it all depends on the merits of each case.

“The complainants are assisted by the police but if the situation is beyond our control, they are referred to the children’s court, child welfare or the social workers.”

Ndwedwe youth receive advice and warmth for the winter PURNAL POONUSAMY >>Purnal.Poonusamy@media24.com NORTH coast-based NPO, Religion without Borders have decided to tackle mental health with the recent recipients of the winter warmth programme.

The organisation, in conjunction with Brand Spot Marketing, gifted the youth of Ndwedwe with tracksuits and treats. The founder of the organisation Vishnu Govender, who has undergone lay counselling training with a psychologist, imparted advice to the youth about suicide and bullying.

Govender said the drive was an endeavour to encourage the youth to distance themselves from the recent suicidal tendencies and bullying traits that are on the increase in the community.

The project was initiated to promote feelings of love and inclusive consciousness amongst the youth.

He said: “We live here, whatever the colour of our skin, whatever our religion, whatever our gender, we are inhaling and exhaling the same air, but we have no issue. Body has no problem, but the identity has the problem.

If you have limited identity, you will cause disharmony, you will cause cruel things, thinking you are doing the right thing,” said Govender.

Over the past few weeks during the previous legs of the winter warmth drive, the organisation has provided tracksuits, grocery hampers and food to residents of the north coast.

It was through these previous drives that Govender was contacted to provide relief for the youth of Ndwedwe.

ITH former angling champion Belgate’s Sagren Naidoo (52) at the helm, the Tongaat Legends Angling Club is ready to clean-up the act of Tongaat’s youth by introducing them to an array of sports designed to keep them off the streets and away from social ills.

Due a traumatic incident that kept him away from the rod and reel for 12 years, Naidoo was forced to take a step back. During this time, he observed the youth in his neighbourhood and witnessed their descent into drugs and disorder.

The club itself, will cater for youth and adults, from the age of seven and up, as well as persons with disabilities. Other activities that will be available under the club includes swimming, cricket and soccer, the latter

under the mentorship of Reuben Pillay.

Pillay’s soccer career spans for approximately 30 years, which includes playing for the Tongaat Crusaders.

Now Pillay coaches at Mitchford Primary among other schools, as well as his own youth academy in Belvedere.

Pillay also conducts an over 50 league in the Tongaat area.

With the support of Belvedere Civic Association’s Professor Michael Abraham, and in conjunction with other sporting leaders in the community, Naidoo has already endeavored to speak to the youth at various locations and will continue to do so.

Naidoo believes that he can convey his passion for angling in a fun way that will motivate the youth to keep them on the right track.

He also expressed his hope for the Tongaat Anti-Drug Forum to return as well.

Naidoo said that he spoke to these

children and advised them against drugs and bullying, the latter of which forced him out of school at the age of 14. From that age, Naidoo opted to work full time, but as the years went by, he noted that he made more income from angling.

He began angling at seven years old, under the tutelage of his grandfather. The experience brings fond memories to Naidoo who remembers the walks to the beach he and his grandfather used to take in order to fish.

Naidoo was part of several angling clubs and founded a few, but all eventually closed after his departure from the sport in 2010.

It was also during 2010, before the incident, that Naidoo was award a shield having participated in the Tugela Annual Meet.

THE human race has an incredible ability to spawn bad people. While the overwhelming majority of humans are generally good and well meaning, the bad elements are also aplenty.

The good thing is that we also have an ability to call them out and eventually run them out of town. Some of these bad people rise to powerful positions, which they use to terrorise fellow citizens and ruin livelihoods.

In the past century, we have had genocidaires such as Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin; cruel and murderous dictators like PW Botha and Augusto Pinochet; and thieves like Mobutu Sese Seko and Ferdinand Marcos.

There are, of course, many more leaders who achieved eternal infamy through their bad deeds. What is fundamental is that we know their names and the memories of their reigns are always associated with their bad deeds. When you mention the name Hitler, you will always think of Nazism and the Holocaust; when you hear about Pinochet, you think of the mass murders and disappearances of his era; and when you think of Sese Seko, you think of grand theft.

And so we fast forward to present-day South Africa, where those in charge of the country are seemingly afraid to mention the name Jacob Zuma alongside the words “corruption” and “state capture”.

This week, President Cyril Ramaphosa spent two days at the Zondo commission and deftly avoided mentioning Jacob Zuma, the individual at the centre of the entire state capture project.

Ramaphosa spoke about how the process of state capture “involved some members and leaders of our organisation”. Jacob Zuma was the main one.

He mentioned “those within its [the ANC’s] ranks who have been involved in corruption or who are complicit in state capture”. Jacob Zuma was the chief culprit.

Just say his name.

Another reference was to “ANC leaders and members who have been complicit in acts of corruption or other crimes”. Jacob Zuma and others.

Another gem was his statement that “with the passage of time, more reports began to surface in the public domain about the alleged ‘capture’ of public entities by private interests and the undue influence of certain individuals, notably members of the Gupta family, in executive decisions and appointments”.

Then: “members of the Gupta family may have had an improper role in the functioning of the executive”.

These reports were about how the Guptas, with the connivance of Jacob Zuma, were actively involved in appointing ministers and determining government’s policy decisions.

The president knows it was him, but just will not say so. Jacob Zuma gave the Guptas free rein. Everyone, especially the leadership of the ANC, knew.

Ramaphosa added this strange statement: “Instances of state capture ... were not necessarily recognised or described as such at the time.

And even as the term gained currency, there were individuals in the ANC and in

PRESIDENT Cyril Ramaphosa’s unburdening before the Zondo Commission of Inquiry into state capture about the ANC’s corrupt recent past and “renewal process” will be put to the test in the coming days.

Yesterday, the ANC’s national working committee (NWC) met for the first time since party secretary-general Ace Magashule defied a call to step aside within 30 days.

“All members who have been charged with corruption or other serious crimes must step aside within 30 days, failing which they should be suspended in terms of rule 25,7 of the ANC constitution,” Ramaphosa, as ANC president, told the nation on March 29.

Those 30 days have now expired. Magashule is still in his job.

If Ramaphosa wants anyone in the country to believe anything he testified last week, Magashule must be suspended from the ANC this week.

The “cathartic moment for the ANC” that Ramaphosa tried to convince Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo about will ring hollow if Magashule survives yet another round.

A fierce battle was expected at yesterday’s meeting of the NWC, where Magashule supporters like Tony Yengeni and Nomvula Mokonyane were set to put up a fight for him to remain in his job.

Ramaphosa’s supporters believe they have the majority in the NWC. It is unclear whether the NWC will itself enforce rule 25,7 of the ANC constitution, for Magashule to step aside, or wait until this weekend’s meeting of the national executive committee (NEC) to recommend Magashule’s suspension.

The last NEC meeting adopted the interpretation of the ANC’s constitution that party members charged with corruption or other crimes should step aside.

Further appeals or delays will fundamentally undermine Ramaphosa’s claims last week that he and the “new” ANC leaders are committed to charting a new, uncorrupt path for the governing party.

Another immediate, more complicated challenge for Ramaphosa is the unfolding scandal surrounding the awarding of a multimillion-rand tender to Karpowership, a controversial Turkish energy company, to provide the bulk of 2 000 MW of new power by independent power producers.

Every day, more and more details are emerging that cast massive doubts over how the deal was won, who the local empowerment partners are, how they were chosen, and what the role of Mineral Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe is in all of this.

Last week, businessperson Aldworth Mbalati, CEO of DNG Power Holdings, submitted an explosive affidavit to court, detailing how he was courted by a businessperson linked to Mantashe who promised to assist him in winning the tender.

‘DÉJÀ VU?’ His proof includes an SMS referring to “the main principal’s wife”, understood to be Mantashe’s spouse Nolwandle, who allegedly delayed the bidding period for Karpowership, and the minutes of a meeting held at an empty Pretoria restaurant with employees of the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR).

At this meeting, Mbalati states under oath, that he was told by the officials: “One thing you must

understand is that there is a system in this country, and if you don’t work in accordance with that system you will fail, even if your project is the best, and I suspect that your project will be the best, but that means that you must be part of the system.”

Mbalati’s refusal to participate in bribery and manipulation was met with “anger and vitriol”. Is this not exactly the patronage “system” advocates Paul Pretorius and Alec Freund repeatedly asked Ramaphosa about last week?

The president referred to it as a “crude diversion” of what his government wants to achieve.

If the president seriously believes patronage ended with the recalling of Jacob Zuma as state president in early 2018, he should have tea with Mbalati and ask himself if the DMR’s Risk Mitigation IPP Procurement Programme constitutes the “renewal” that he told Judge Zondo about.

Mantashe said he will deal with the claims in court, and Nolwandle has denied any involvement in delaying the bid for Karpowership.

A few days before Ramaphosa told Judge Zondo that things are changing in the ANC, his fellow comrades in Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Mineral Resources and Energy voted against a proposal to launch an investigation into fast-tracking IPP bids.

Experiencing déjà vu? You are not alone. This is the kind of behaviour that allowed the Zumaera state capture to flourish for a decade.

It seems there are comrades who belong to a different ANC from the one Ramaphosa testified about last week.

In addition to making sufficient vaccine procurement a priority, more needs to be done to raise public awareness of the safety of the vaccine.

If the vaccine mistrust is not addressed swiftly, it will unfortunately hinder South Africa’s vaccination roll-out programme.

In order for South Africa to prevent more loss of lives from the virus and to reach herd immunity, the government, community and religious leaders and other stakeholders need to work together in order to lessen the impact of this novel Covid-19 virus.

Firstly, most of South Africa quickly recognised the “instances” of state capture, if that is how he prefers to refer to the systemic takeover of the republic by the Guptas, enabled by Jacob Zuma.

Secondly, the primary questioner of the use of the term was Jacob Zuma, who was then joined by others who found it convenient to posit the ridiculous argument that if the state was captured, then all three arms of government would first have to be wholly captured.

Ramaphosa stated that “the ANC did not and could never direct its members or leaders to commit acts of corruption”.

It did not have to. The main member who committed the acts of corruption was its president, Jacob Zuma, and, in fact, he did direct members and other leaders to do the same.

Ramaphosa added that “the ANC distances itself from those within its ranks who have been involved in corruption or who are complicit in state capture”. Well, actually, the ANC hasn’t. Jacob Zuma is still within its ranks and attends almost every national executive committee meeting as an ex-officio member and regularly speaks at party gatherings.

The president said the ANC acknowledged that “it must provide explanations” for matters being investigated by the Zondo commission because state capture “took place under our watch as the governing party”.

Until the ANC mentions Jacob Zuma by name, whatever explanation it gives will be inadequate.

Ramaphosa was correct to say that the “apartheid system was morally and systemically corrupt”, and was correct in implying that it had the potential to infect a new republic.

“Not only did its legal provisions appropriate to a small minority the assets and resources that rightfully belonged to all South Africa’s people, but there was also a prevailing culture of corruption within the apartheid state, state-owned enterprises, private business establishments and Bantustan administrations,” he said.

He was even more spot on when he stated that the “advent of democracy in South Africa was an opportunity to make a decisive break with that past”.

Break with the past we did.

During the tenures of our first three presidents, there was a general ethos that the country should be about progress and that the business of government should be done ethically. Yes, corruption happened on a big scale even then, but it was not the fashionable norm.

Jacob Zuma made it normal. He and his defenders would even make noise that corruption was worse under National Party rule, as if the Nats were a standard to judge yourself by.

Anyway, that is the man who took us to the edge of the abyss and put us deep into this hole.

His name is Jacob Zuma and we should say it loudly when we speak of state capture and grand corruption.

Rassam for residents PURNAL POONUSAMY >>Purnal.Poonusamy@media24.com LOCAL NPO SVK Religion without Borders recently held a feeding drive, keeping in line with the pandemic to provide an immune booster to residents.

Together with the Umhlanga Hindu Society, volunteers from both organisations prepared the immune boosting soup called rasam, and distributed to approximately 40 residents from Flamingo Heights and informal traders in the area.

Speaking on the drive, Govender said: “The organisation tries to feed a community once a month amidst other monthly initiatives like the current winter warmth

drive that provides the youth of different communities with new tracksuits once a month and also toys for children to engage the children in play and thus attempt to lessen the mental impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.”

Govender also said the organisation is only funded by members, good Samaritans and well-wishers from the public domain and some businesses.

He added that due to the pandemic, the organisation receives requests from the communities in and around the North Coast for groceries, meals, clothing and toys.

ORTHERN Action Committee, a local NPO, recently held their monthly hamper drive for the North Coast communities on Freedom Day. Thirty-five families from the Tongaat, Verulam and Phoenix areas were the recipients of a hamper which is valued at approximately R300 each.

The recipients filled out the organisation’s hamper survey form, and following verification, they were shortlisted for the drive.

This month was the organisations 16 hamper drive since the commencement of the lockdown which commenced in March 2020.

All Covid-19 protocols were maintained.

Collin Maistry of the organisation said: “NAC was formed in June 1996 and this year [the organisation turns] 25 years. One of the objectives in 1996 was to provide food hampers to needy families on a monthly basis, which happened as per the objectives. However due to funds, it was decided to provide food hampers four times a year, namely Easter, Eid, Diwali and Christmas.

However, with the current pandem-

ic, it was reverted back to the original plan on providing food hampers on a monthly basis from last March with the help of the community, families, friends and businesses, definitely looking at your support again.”

“On behalf of the Northern Action Committee, members of the committee, I take this opportunity to place on record my unequivocal thanks and appreciation to Shabeer Sulaman and his staff of Tongaat, and sponsors who made it possible to purchase the hampers and distributed it to needy families.”

Other upcoming events: NAC is planning to host a day Wildcoast trip in aid of raising funds for the June hamper drive. The trip will take place on Sunday, May 30, scheduled to leave at 6 am, Tickets are R150 per person. Pick up points will be at Tongaat, Verulam and Phoenix.

The NAC also has a raffle going on which is R2 per leaflet with many prizes up for grabs.

The organisation will also be celebrating their 25th anniversary on June 5.

HE revolutionary Wonderbag recently kicked off their six-month nationwide campaign, whereby they will be hosting pop-up markets in order to get the Wonderbag into homes that really need it.

The campaign will see one million bags that were subsidised become available to vulnerable and lower to middle income homes.

Speaking on the first weekend of the pop-up market, Promote Communication’s Janna Strang said: “We were thrilled at the turnout and success of the first ever Wonderbag Market with the number of subsidised Wonderbags distributed (over 500) far exceeding our expectations. People gathered from in and around Tongaat to get their hands on a Wonderbag and we are confident that next weekend’s market will be equally as successful because the local community can clearly see the value and benefits of owning and using a Wonderbag.”

Strang said that in addition to making the bag more affordable for the communities that it will be invaluable to, the campaign also forms part of the regulated Carbon Credits project.

“The use of these bags will also have a huge environmental impact through its carbon offsetting potential,” said Strang.

Due to the Carbon Tax act that passed in South Africa, companies that produce large amounts of Carbon are able to buy carbon credits in order to offset their carbon take liability.

“Projects like the one Wonderbag is running

to accumulate carbon credits and offset as much carbon being emitted by these companies as possible, is already in huge demand and will only grow in importance and demand with the Carbon Tax act due to be enforced in the coming months,” said Strang.

Adding to how useful that bag is to the environment, if used for over a year, the Wonderbag can reduce up to one and half tons of carbon emissions annually. It also reduced the exposure to indoor air-pollution by up to 90% in houses that use biomass materials, and can save up to 1000 litres of water annually.

The subsidised bag that usually goes for R350 has now been reduced to R50 and will only be available at the market. The resale of the bags is prohibited and the sales will be documented for auditing purposes as part of an ongoing carbon credits project run by Wonderbag.

“Although the distribution of these one million subisidised bags is aimed at vulnerable communities, the only criteria for purchasing a subsidised Wonderbag is to cover the subsidised fee of R50, that each household is limited to purchasing two Wonderbags, that all buyers of the Wonderbag provide complete and accurate information documented for auditing purposes, and that Wonderbags obtained through this initiative are not resold, as this is strictly prohibited in terms of the subsidised programme,” said Strang.

The second weekend of the Wonderbag market will take place at their factory site in Tongaat on May 8 and 9.

Kyra is looking for her stem cell donor

O celebrate Workers Day, Phumla Zungu, manager of occupational health and safety at King Shaka International Airport shares their work experience.

Phumla Zungu was keeping a close eye on the news in late 2019, following how a strange virus had begun wreaking havoc in China and was spreading across the globe.

She had just started a new job as manager of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) at King Shaka International Airport and with her background in microbiology and chemistry, she knew this virus meant trouble. Three months later, Covid-19 brought the world to a standstill, South Africa went into lockdown, international and domestic flights were suspended, airports shut, and hundreds of aeroplanes were grounded.

“Covid-19 was like nothing we had seen before,” said Zungu. “We had to adapt at lightning speed, collaborate with both internal and external stakeholders and work together as a team to manage our response.”

It was as if Zungu was made for the job.

With regulations constantly changing, Zungu’s occupational health qualifications and scientific background came to the fore. “It felt as if everything I had learnt and the experience, I had gained during my 20-year career needed to be put into practice at that moment,” she recalls.

After finishing school, Zungu dreamt of being a doctor and started studying towards a medical degree. But a training visit to a local hospital left her questioning her career path as seeing injured and patients in pain took an emotional toll.

The next year, she switched to a BSc and after qualifying from The University of Fort Hare, worked in laboratories, first analysing sugar samples for SA Sugar, then as a water quality analyst at UShaka Marine World.

Later she worked as a pollution control officer at eThekwini municipality, then as SHE manager for Wasteman (Operating landfill site in Chatsworth) later for Transnet, managing safety protocols for major construction projects.

When Covid-19 hit, Zungu put her experience in health and safety into action in her new role at one of South Africa’s biggest international airports.

Fortunately, King Shaka International Airport already had occupational health and safety procedures and policies in place, including state-of-the art clinic providing occupational health medicals and services of trained paramedics for emergency re-

sponses.

“All these procedures as well as the service providers were put to the test,” she added.

In collaboration with the clinic and Human Resources and Occupational Health and Safety teams used clinical information to conduct risk assessments and identify those with co-morbidities most at risk. With the airport still handling repatriation flights and essential cargo, Zungu was tasked with ensuring that the airport complied with a raft of constantly changing Covid-19 related legislation.

Covid-19 monitors were appointed, protective gear procured, and protocols implemented to enable proper management of covid19 cases.

Camera footage and interviews were conducted if a positive case was identified, helping to trace the movement of PUI (person under investigation) so that Cleaning and disinfection of surfaces in the context of Covid-19 could be deployed.

Her team collaborated with corporate affairs and human resources to hold education and awareness sessions with staff and stakeholders and keep them up to date.

“Management gave us the space and budget to do what we do best,” said Zungu.

“The co-ordination and support from Airports Company South Africa was also commendable as we worked with colleagues from airports across the country.”

The new health and safety protocols are likely to remain post Covid-19 too. Zungu is looking to implement ISO 45001, Occupational Health and Safety management system to provide a framework to enable business to implement effective arrangements for managing occupational health and safety.

“Leveraging the lessons, we’ve derived from Covid19, we’ll be able to implement, maintain and continually improve our systems and accountability.”

For Zungu, the rewarding part of her job is seeing that the procedures she helped put in place are working to curb the spread of the virus.

“Occupational Health and Safety was thrust into the limelight during the pandemic and now people understand that what we do has a real impact on the health and wellbeing of both staff and stakeholders,” she said.

“With Covid-19 expected to remain a reality for some time to come, what we do will play a critical role in helping the world go back to normal.” – Supplied.

ON October 5 2020, a Durban family received the devastating news that their then 10-year-old ’happy, carefree and energetic young lass’, Kyra, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia, a life threatening blood disorder. Michelle, says one of her daughter’s most favourite things is to play with her 11-year-old dog, Zeus, but because of her compromised immune system no longer can. She has often told me that is the first thing she will do when she is better is play with Zeus”, says Michelle.

Kyra is one of many cancer sufferers, and, without a match in her own family, requires an unrelated match. The chances of finding a donor match are 1:100 000 within your ethnic group.

Smith excited for new KZN challenge H

AVING spent his entire cricket career in the Western Cape, allrounder Jason Smith has taken the big step out of his comfort zone when he links up with the Hollywoodbets Dolphins for the new domestic season starting later this year.

Smith, who was educated at Wynberg Boys High School, and played all of his professional cricket for the Six Gun Grill Cape Cobras, is excited by the fact that he is making the change in his career at an important time in his growth.

“It was a big decision for me to get out of my comfort zone,” Smith said. “I felt that I needed a new challenge and was probably a bit too comfortable at home and needed to make the change for my career.

“The coach Imraan Khan was a massive influence on my decision to come to Durban and I feel like we are similar people, which gave me comfort in my choice to move.”

The easy-going 26 year-old is looking forward to hitting the ground running with the Dolphins during their pre-season starting in June. Given the success that the Dolphins experienced in the previous season he’s excited to join the set-up.

“Everyone wants to be part of a team that is doing well and playing good cricket because it can only make

them a better cricketer.

“I have played with a lot of the guys in the squad and get along with them so I can see Durban as a place that I will fit into quite easily.

“Meeting new people is also a big part of why I moved and I’m looking forward to creating new relationships in Durban,” he added.

Given the Dolphins’ success last season, Smith believes that being part of a team that is at the top is another important factor in the shift from the Cape.

“Any player wants to win,” he commented. “Winning is the motivation and to be joining a side that has experienced that success is exciting.”

Smith recently returned from Namibia where he represented the SA Emerging team against Namibia - a team that had a few Dolphins players in it and coach Imraan Khan as the teams assistant coach.

Despite the side going down in the both the T20 and ODI series, Smith was one of the stand-out players for the SA Emerging side, as across both formats he finished as the leading run-scorer with 188 runs at an average of 37.

TOKYO Olympic organisers acknowledged on Tuesday, that Sapporo residents were concerned about a marathon test event being held in the northern Japanese city amid a rise in Covid-19 cases, and said they were implementing measures to hold the event safely.

The marathon test event — actually a half-marathon and a 10K race — was held yesterday starting from Sapporo’s Odori park. Yasuo Mori, Tokyo 2020’s deputy executive director of the Games operations bureau, addressed the concerns amid a record rise in infections in the city.

“We are fully aware [Sapporo] residents feel uneasy with the current situation, and we are carrying out various steps as we want to prepare for an event where people can feel even a little bit more at ease,” Mori told a news conference.

In Hokkaido, new daily cases hit a record 326 on Sunday, public broadcaster NHK reported. The prefecture plans to call for stronger anti-virus measures in Sapporo, including shorter restaurant hours and for more people to work from home.

The test event was scaled down greatly due to the coronavirus situation with only 93 runners planning to take part in the half marathon. General entry for 2 500 runners was cancelled. Mori also spoke about the stringent measures put in place for testing the six foreign athletes who have entered the country for the event, with daily screenings required and no public transportation allowed. The Olympic marathon and race walk events are scheduled to be held from August 5 to 8 in Sapporo.

They were originally planned to take place in Tokyo but the International Olympic Committee (IOC) surprised Games organisers in October 2019 by announcing the events would be moved to Sapporo to avoid the worst of Tokyo’s summer heat.

The decision did not go down well with Tokyo organisers, who had done extensive planning for the events, including a series of cooling measures for the athletes, nor with the Tokyo governor, who reluctantly consented to the move. — Reuters.
