akford-based NPO Sukela Foundation, partnered with a local football club, Oakford Blinders FC to host the Siyabangena Tournament.

Football clubs from around Verulam battled it out on the field for the cup. KS Foundation is a youth organisation that aims to educate the youngsters about gender based violence and gender power dynamics using the art of play and storytelling.

The organisation was founded in 2015 by Nelisiwe Bengu, Sinenhlanhla Bengu, Sbusiso Bengu, Nelisiwe Ngcobo and Regina Ngcobo - two concerned families who saw the lack of awareness and support for the

GBV movement in Oakford.

To celebrate youth month, the organisation partnered with the community’s soccer team tournament, to raise awareness and to encourage the youth to show up, and to showcase the fallen heroes.

Teams took a pledge against gender-based violence before the game.

The tournament was an overwhelming success, it has been almost a decade since the Oakford community celebrated in such style.

The foundation looks forward to more partnerships with the surrounding communities.

Search for ‘FAKE COPS’ in Tongaat

Sassa and various cards seized in Tongaat Police officers from the provincial organised crime unit executed two search warrants in the Emona area recently.

Upon searching the house denoted in the warrants, police found nine identity documents, nine Sassa cards as well as 12 various bank cards. An inquiry was opened regarding the discovery of the cards.

The team proceed to the second premises at Lilly Pond Avenue and conducted a search. A to-

tal of 540 blue and white capsules of heroin, 94 pieces of crack cocaine and two bags of cocaine powder.

The estimated street value of the recovered drugs is R 20 800. A 40-year-old suspect was placed under arrest for being in possession of drugs.

olice are searching for “fake cops” who wounded two officers during a routine stop and search at the N2 Tongaat Toll Plaza over the weekend.

Colonel Thembeka Mbhele, provincial SAPS spokesperson, said an officer was inspecting the boot of a silver Etios sedan with four male occupants when he found a police radio and a bag of police uniforms.

When the policemen asked the occupants if any of them were police officers, Mbhele said, they confirmed they were not. The policeman then called over his partner. The four occupants got out of the Etios and began firing with handguns on the officers while running to nearby canefields. The officers returned fire.

The driver of the Etios then got back into the vehicle and fled southbound, said Mbhele. The police officers gave chase but lost sight of the vehicle and returned to the crime scene. K9 members could not find the three fugitives in the cane.

Detective and team applauded for arrest Following a case of murder that was reported at the Blackburn informal settlement earlier this month, Verulam police swiftly arrested the perpetrator, It was reported that two men were playing a game of pool, when an argument broke out resulting in one of the men stabbing the other. The stabbed man was taken to hospital where he died due to his injuries, while the other fled.

The detectives assigned to the case received information that the man who allegedly committed the murder had fled to Bizana in the Eastern Cape.

The detective and his team travelled to Bizana where they arrested the man, who was subsequently charged and appeared in court for the murder.

The Verulam police station commander, Brigadier Victor Dludla applauded the team for arresting the man especially after he had fled to a faraway place.

Dludla also thanked the community for giving information to the police, thus resulting in the arrest of the suspect.

“It is the community who knows the hiding place of criminals and we are appealing to the community to be our partners in the fight against crime.

“Criminals must be warned that you cannot hide for far too long because we will definitely come looking for you,” said Dludla.

ocal councillor and member of eThekwini Municipality Executive Committee Yogis Govender noted that several schools in the area had put out circulars on social media noting positive Covid-19 cases in the past month.

She said: “It is absolutely critical for parents and guardians to reinforce the importance of Covid-19 protocols.

It is extremely disconcerting for anyone to deal with the anxiety and stress

of a loved one being infected, more especially our children. Asymptomatic transmission, mask wearing and social distancing must be reiterated frequently and we cannot and must not assume that because a person is a relative or work colleague that we can take off the masks or forget to social distance.”

Following the announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa to move the country to lockdown alert level 4, eThekwini Municipality advises the public about the closure of its facilities for public use. This is to ensure the safety of employees and the public. The following amenities will be closed for public use until further notice.

Libraries and heritage sites: All libraries, museums, art galleries, theatres and heritage sites are closed to the public. All books due will be extended until the end of July.

Botanic gardens and fenced parks: Only a maximum of 100 people will be allowed in at a time. No picnics, braais, photoshoots, group exercise, alcohol consumption or social gatherings will be permitted. Walking of pets, individual exercise, jogging, walking or trail biking (where applicable) are permitted.

Umngeni Bird Park and Mitchell Park Zoo: The facility will be opened to allow a

maximum of 100 people at a time. However, the bird shows will not be operating under alert level 4.

Beaches: Beaches will remain open for swimming. However, people will not be permitted to swim in groups. No alcohol consumption, picnics (in places that permitted such), or religious ceremonies will be permitted at beaches.

No group surfing, training or running groups will be allowed on the beaches.

Likewise, no group bookings for beach activities will be permitted. Fishing is still permissible, but not in groups.

Nature reserves: Nature reserves remain open for individual exercise and walking for enjoyment. However, group walks, bird hiking or trail riding will not be permitted.

Likewise, no picnics or braais will be allowed. The maximum number of people allowed in reserves is 100.

Cemeteries: Cemeteries are open to

the public for funerals. However, the maximum number of persons allowed at any funeral is 50 as per the lockdown regulations. No after parties are allowed.

Swimming pools: All swimming pools are closed until further notice.

Indoor sport centres: All Indoor sport facilities are closed. SA moves to alert Level 4 ESTELLE SINKINS

With the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic gathering strength and force, the government has taken the decision to put South Africa in adjusted lockdown level four.

As of Sunday, the seven-day average of new daily cases nationally has overtaken the peak of the first wave in July last year, and will soon overtake the peak of the second wave in January 2021. Gauteng now accounts for more than 60% of all new cases, and, with the exception of the Northern Cape and Free State, infections are rising rapidly in other provinces.

As part of the government’s plans to combat the third wave, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that alcohol sales were banned both from retail outlets, restaurants, bars and taverns, since Monday. The new restrictions will come as a massive blow to the entertainment and hospitality sector, which has still not fully recovered from the country’s previous lockdowns.

The president said the ministerial advisory committee believed the limited restrictions, previously imposed on the sector, were not effective enough and that a complete prohibition would help ease pressure on hospital emergency rooms.

All social, religious, political and cultural gatherings, whether indoors or outdoors, have also been prohibited, a measure likely to hit theatres and concert venues, as well as the conference sector. Public spaces, such as beaches and parks, can stay open, but no gatherings will be allowed. Only 50 people may attend funerals and cremations and no night vigils, after-funeral or “after-tears” gatherings are allowed.

A curfew will be in place from 9 pm to 4 am, and all non-essential establishments must close by 8 pm.

The Delta variant of the coronavirus, which was first identified in India, is now the leading source of infections in SA. Gauteng, KZN, the Eastern Cape, Free State and the Western Cape have all confirmed the presence of the new variant in patients.

“The evidence we have is that the Delta variant is rapidly displacing the Beta variant, which has been dominant in our country until now,” Ramaphosa said.

“We are concerned about the rapid spread of this variant.

Firstly, because it is more transmissible than previously circulating viruses, meaning it is easier to catch through person-to-person contact. It is thought to be twice as contagious as the Beta variant.

Secondly, because it is more contagious, it can infect far more people. As with the previous variants, you can pass it on without even knowing you have it.

“Thirdly, there is now emerging scientific evidence that people previously infected with the Beta variant do not have full protection against the Delta variant, and may get reinfected.

“Fourthly, because it is much more contagious, the measures we have so far adopted to contain the spread of the virus may no longer be sufficient to reduce transmission.”

Scientists are also concerned that children are at greater risk of infection and illness from the new Delta variant, although evidence shows infection rates are still lower than that in adults.

Ramaphosa said all indications are that the third wave will be worse than those that preceded it.

He urged all South Africans to play their part to prevent the complete collapse of the country’s health facilities.

“In several provinces, our public health facilities are stretched to their limits, and private facilities are also buckling under the strain,” he said.

“Even as our hospitals have made extraordinary efforts to accommodate patients, ICU beds are in short supply. What we are seeing is that the existing containment measures in place are not enough to cope with the speed and scale of new infections.”

Given the high rate of infections in Gauteng, travel in and out of the province for leisure purposes will be prohibited. Travel for work, business or commercial reasons, transit through airports or for the transport of goods is permitted.

Visits to old age homes, care facilities and other “congregant settings” will be restricted; and restaurants and other eateries will only be permitted to sell food for take-away or delivery.

The closure of schools and other educational institutions for the winter holidays were brought forward. Schools started closing from Wednesday, with all schools expected to be closed by Friday.

Contact classes at tertiary institutions ended on Wednesday and there will be limited access to the institutions. Residences will remain open.

Ramaphosa said: “The measures that we are putting in place now are designed to allow as much economic activity to continue as possible, while containing the spread of the virus.

Most businesses will continue to operate at full capacity and should not be affected. Our focus is on limiting social contacts while preserving the economy.”

ith adjusted level 4 lockdown announced on Sunday, one of the regulations denoted that schools were to start closing from Wednesday.

On Monday, Department of Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga held a media briefing to discuss how the closure of schools will take place.

She said that both public and private schools will begin their winter holidays from Wednesday, June 30, with allowances made for pupils in hostel facilities or with special education needs that are waiting for their parents to pick them up, until July 2.

Schools are set to resume for the next term on July 19.

“The sector will remain vigilant in monitoring the developments of the epidemiology, working closely with the Ministry of Health, to inform the implementation of the Risk Adjusted Differentiated Strategy, when there is a need to do so, including the earlier pronounced full attendance of primary school learners from the first day of the third school term,” said Motshekga during her address.

Due to the closure of schools, the department has reactivated the remote learner support programme, the WOZA Matrics 2021 Catch-Up Programme and the Tswelopele Campaigns. These national remote learning campaigns were developed to support pupils with supplementary

support content, that will help them catch up on learning losses.

“We implore parents, guardians and caregivers to ensure that during the recess, children continue to learn, using the available resources. Doing so, will protect the gains that have already been achieved. We also encourage our learners to remain safe.

“Do not gather in crowds. Apply hygiene practices at all times, and avoid activities that may expose learner to infections,” said Motshekga.

Speaking on how they prepared, a KZN principal, Andrew Graaf said that a closure such as this was always a possibility. “The third wave driven by the Delta variant is very real and we support the President and the Minister in their bold decision.

Safety must remain a priority.”

Graaf added that the school were in the process of conducting controlled tests until July 7, however they will carry the unwritten tests over to the next term.

In the event the lockdown lasts longer than anticipated, he said: “Last year taught us how to teach and learn online. We would have to resume online learning and teaching.”

Another school that anticipated the closure was Verulam-based school, Lotusville Primary.

Principal Thamodharan Govender said that despite that, they have not completed their testing and will also have to reschedule them for next term.

He said that they were instructed to go on with lessons until the initial term closure date on July 8.

He added that the school will not conduct online learning, but they have given their pupils revision work to complete at home during the holiday.

Despite that, most of the school pupils’ tests were completed, save for two grade seven learning areas, which Naidoo says will be completed in the next term.

On how they are preparing for the closure, Naidoo said that they have already put out a circular regarding the school’s website, which contains revision material and advice for parents to held the pupils occupy their time with meaningful activities.

Tongaat-based Maidstone Primary said that they didn’t anticipate the early closure, but by acknowledging the infections rate, they thought something like this was inevitable.

The school finished their controlled tests and exams last Friday, but believes that many of his colleagues (other schools) have not.

The school issued progress reports at the end of term, by putting a contingency measure in place.

The school held a meeting on Monday morning in order to ensure pupils have material to work with if the lockdown is extended.

H

aving previously secured one of the top 10 marks globally, Tongaat-born Nitrisha Doorasamy recently wrote the STEP Trust Law and Practice exam, and achieved pole position in the world.

Doorasamy who is currently living in Guernsey on the Channel Islands is a lawyer for Private Capital and Trusts, specialising in non-contentious private client work. In 2018, she joined Walkers Global and which is when she moved to Guernsey.

“Walkers is a leading international law firm with offices across 10 jurisdictions around the world and is consistently ranked in the top tier of leading global directories,” said Doorasamy.

“I am honoured to be recognised by STEP Worldwide as the last few months came with much hard work and sacrifices.”

“STEP is globally recognised as the quality benchmark for training in trusts law and practice, and this achievement not only brings recognition to my law firm and I but to Guernsey too as it is a testament of the talent and skills present on the Island,” she added.

These international examinations are written in each STEP jurisdiction, and every jurisdiction recognizes their student with the highest mark. The highest scoring individuals from each jurisdictions are compared and the student with the highest mark overall is ranked first in the world.

On how this achievement impacted her work, she said: “My studies provide me with knowl-

edge on Trusts Law on a global basis and being number 1 definitely sets my law firm and I apart in the industry.

Doorasamy and is hoping to still celebrate her achievement with her family in South Africa, but the trip is pending due to the pandemic.

On what’s next for her, she said: “I plan on writing my final and last examination in the next couple of months and thereafter I will be fully STEP qualified.”

In commemoration of Youth Day, community activists Rita Mohanlal, Dinah Perumal and a group of dedicated volunteers held a Youth Day sports programme in an open undeveloped space not far from the Belvedere Dhurga Temple in Tongaat.

Residents especially children from the nearby areas flocked to participate in the sporting activities in honour of the history of the day.

The children participated in a number of games and novelty events, such as egg and spoon, sack race, needle and thread, bean bag picking, donkey derby and tug-o-war.

The highlight of the day was the fierce soccer battle between Belvedere and Plane Street youth.

The purpose of the sports programme is to keep the children occupied and away from all the social evils that is affecting the youth in society.

Both Mohanlal and Perumal said: “We are passionate about sports and a supporter of young people who show an

appetite for development not only in sports, but also life skills. Our objective is to make this a longterm initiative not only on Youth Day but in the future.”

Not only did the volunteers provide the sport programme, the children were also treated to a breakfast prior to the start as well as lunch and medals together with a goody bag was given to all the participants.

According to Reuben Pillay, Rooksana Basha and Clarissa Pillay, Belvedere is one of the biggest suburbs on the south and there is no playing facilities therefore the children are forced to play in open undeveloped spaces. An appeal is made to the ward councillor to upgrade the undeveloped open space immediately and to make representations to the municipality for a stadium in the future.

The newly elected sports committee candidate, Mervin Naidoo, who represents soccer in the ward 61, said that this matter was addressed numerous times to the ward councillor by Reuben Pillay and it seems as though all of his complaints have fallen on deaf ears, however, since being elected on the sports committee they are going to put pressure on the office of the ward councillor to investigate the matter and revert back to the people.

The community activists want to thank their volunteers for the meals provided on the day and a very special appeal is made to business houses to pledge their support by sponsoring the children with sporting equipment and outfits in order to have a drug free township.

ccommodation facilities across the North Coast have been hard hit by the move to adjusted lockdown level four announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Sunday night.

Usually a bustling time for the KZN coast, the July school holidays bring with it more than 100 000 visitors, mostly from Gauteng.

However, with the high rate of infections in Gauteng, travel in and out of the province for leisure purposes has been prohibited for a two week period resulting in accommodation facilities receiving calls for cancellations and postponements.

On the North Coast, Ballito Accommodation’s Christine Grobler, said the holiday letting agency responsible for 150 units, had al-

Doreen Coetzee of Accommodation in Ballito, another letting agency, said while they have received cancellations and postponements for the next two weeks, bookings following the two weeks are still in place.

“I think people need a break, we all need a break, so yes there are cancellations for this level four time, but people are still hopeful for after that. Obviously, with most of our holidaymakers coming from Gauteng, it is not looking great for now.

“We are fully refunding all cancellations because it is not their fault, or ours, it’s the situation, we are all in the same boat. We will deal with it as it comes,” she said.

Owner of Westbrook Place, Penny Bush said she just received a cancellation, while speaking to the Weekly, on a weekend book-

ing where one of the guests was set to travel to Durban from Gauteng.

However, Bush maintains that it is still too early to tell how the travel restriction from Gauteng will affect them.

“I tend to have a different market. Most of my people will book on fairly short notice.

Except for December, where they book ahead,” she said.

She added that on an average month, at the beginning she won’t see many bookings, but as the days go along, bookings tend to pick-up.

Managing operator at Anne’s Place Bed and Breakfast, Andre Bruwer said that their establishment hasn’t had many leisure tourists since reopening after the first lockdown.

He adds that most of their clients are now businessmen who tend to be on con-

tracts, and casual travellers from other provinces.

Since the announcement of the adjusted level four lockdown, Bruwer said the travel agent he works with has had many cancellations.

On whether this affects them, Bruwer said that it doesn’t because they have a decent stream of clients. “[We are] very fortunate to be running, if it wasn’t for these guys who spend a few months on the job, we effectively wouldn’t exist,” he said.

If the lockdown was on a lower level, the school holidays would have most likely have thrown them a lifeline, he said, hoping that things will pick up by the summer.

He added that many BnB’s in the area have closed down, and those who remain open have a second stream of income.

“After five years as a trainee engineer then later appointed as an engineer at OR Tambo International, one of the continent’s biggest, I thought it would be good for me to move to a smaller airport, where I would get more responsibilities,” said Mabua.

“In large airports responsibilities are typically shared between engineers, while King Shaka International Airport has one electrical engineer. This presented the opportunity to challenge myself and look after an entire electrical department.”

While at OR Tambo, Mabua started

working towards his Government Certificate of Competency (GCC), which he completed on his first attempt in 2019 while working at King Shaka International Airport. He says he owes a lot of gratitude to his supportive wife who encouraged him always to study for his GCC exams.

Mabua is not done with academics, he still has ambitions for more qualifications, with attaining his Professional Registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa next on his radar.
