The first part of the year brought about a lot of news.
In sports, the brave men from Mexico lost a close one with their archrivals Brazil 3-2. The good news is that the crowd was the third largest in MexTour history with an attendance at Kyle Field of 85,249 wild fans. While on the other side of the coin, Sean and Brad prevailed and were crowned Pickleball Champs.
There have been so many new and positive changes here at KW. Since January, we’ve added 13 new team members, effectively growing by more than an entire office staff. With this growth comes a host of new opportunities, which include onboarding, introducing the KW culture, and teaching the KW way. There’s a lot for everyone to learn and accomplish.
On the business side, your hard work and dedication are truly appreciated. Keep up the good work. As a company, we have met our revenue goals for the first half of the year. This is no small feat. We would not have achieved this success without the efforts of each one of you. Let’s continue this success and work towards our “Stretch Goal”.
We are in an exciting period of growth for our company. This presents opportunities for individuals to step up and take on more responsibilities. If there is an area or sector of our business that interests you, please talk to Wes or me about your potential. Let’s use this opportunity to be proactive and work towards our long-term goals.
As an office, we have one objective: ensuring our clients’ needs are achieved. Our reputation is our most treasured asset and is the foundation on which this company has been built. How we protect and improve that reputation is to exceed our client’s expectations and to meet our commitments. This is how we build our company for the future.
My last thought is from Steve Jobs: “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.”

Aspire Post Oak, a luxurious residential tower soaring 40 stories high in the esteemed Houston Galleria district, offers residents an unmatched living experience with its meticulously crafted outdoor landscape design.
Designed by KW, the amenity deck includes a stunning glass-edge pool, inviting residents to relax and soak up the Texas sun while enjoying breathtaking views of the city skyline. Adjacent to the pool, a playful pet park provides a space for furry companions to frolic through the lush greenery, enhancing the sense of community among residents. For those seeking tranquility, a serene hammock grove offers a peaceful retreat,
where residents can unwind amidst the swaying trees. The outdoor game terrace provides a dynamic space for leisure activities and friendly competition, fostering connections among neighbors. With a fully equipped outdoor kitchen elevating this space for hosting gatherings, outdoor lounge spaces offer opportunities for relaxation and socialization, every corner invites residents to unwind and connect with their surroundings. In essence, our landscape design of Aspire Post Oak reflects the pinnacle of luxury living, seamlessly blending timeless elegance with natural beauty to create an unparalleled residential experience in the heart of one of Houston’s most prestigious neighborhoods.
Integrating a new 40-story residential tower into a wellestablished area like Post Oak in Houston poses several exciting challenges and opportunities, both architecturally and practically. Here were three key aspects we considered when designing this project:
One of the primary goals we established was to ensure Aspire Post Oak harmonizes with the existing architectural landscape of Post Oak. Before initiating the design phase, we studied the existing architectural styles in the
area and designed in a way that complements, rather than detracts from, the overall aesthetic appeal of the area.
Selecting appropriate materials and designing an attractive facade are essential for ensuring that Aspire Post Oak contributes positively to the existing streetscape renovation led by the Post Oak District.
Given the emphasis from the Post Oak District regarding the vibrant streetscapes, Aspire Post Oak prioritized pedestrian accessibility and comfort.
CLIENT: The Dinerstein Companies
LOCATION: Houston, Texas
SIZE: 40 Stories
UNITS: 383
AMENITY DECK SIZE: 49,700 gsf
AMENITY FEATURES:
• Pool
• Firepit
• Outdoor Kitchen
• Lounge Areas
• Dog Park
Given the challenges of integrating Aspire Post Oak into the well-established area in Houston, we implemented the following solutions throughout our design and project management process.
By selecting the same materials as the existing sidewalk pavers, and taking them all the way to footing of Aspire Post Oak, the new residential tower blends seamlessly into the existing streetscape, enhancing the overall coherence and visual continuity of the neighborhood. Instead of separating the project from the ROW we chose to create a sense of unity and reinforce the existing character of the area.
Utilizing consistent materials not only ensured visual harmony but also contributed to
the creation of an enhanced streetscape. The uniformity of materials along sidewalks, and building exteriors created a cohesive and inviting pedestrian environment, encouraging pedestrians activity and social interaction.
Coordinating with other design consultants, including architects, urban planners, landscape architects, and transportation engineers, was essential for achieving this holistic and integrated design solution.

Designers possess a profound ability to influence the built environment, creating spaces that support human health and well-being. Certain cities are healthier than others due to factors such as lower pollution levels, active lifestyles, rich cultural environments, and access to green infrastructure. Cities like Copenhagen, Denmark; Amsterdam, Netherlands; and Vancouver, Canada, are often cited among the healthiest cities in the world. Copenhagen and Amsterdam are renowned for their extensive cycling infrastructure, green spaces, active lifestyles, and clean air. Vancouver offers abundant outdoor activities, clean air, and a focus on locally sourced food.
Beyond urban settings, people often feel rejuvenated and at peace when immersed in nature, whether deep in the woods, by the ocean, or near a lake. This is not merely anecdotal; extensive research supports the health benefits of spending time in natural environments. Influential authors like Florence Williams
The Nature Fix , Edward O. Wilson
Biophilia , Richard Louv Last Child in the Woods , and Dr. Stephen Kellert Birthright have discussed these
topics. Edward O. Wilson’s concept of biophilia, which he defines as “the urge to affiliate with other forms of life,” highlights our intrinsic desire to connect with nature.
The KW design team has been creating residential, academic, and landscape infrastructure projects that enhance the quality of mental and physical health for all users. Below are several ways in which we consider biophilia and built form.
Incorporating natural elements into play areas for children can significantly enhance their development and well-being. Spaces that encourage creativity and imagination are essential for fostering a child’s growth. Allowing children to play in the dirt is also beneficial, as it exposes them to the microbiome in the soil, which can strengthen their immune systems. Research has shown that children who play in dirt have more diverse microbiomes,
linked to lower rates of allergies, asthma, and other immunerelated conditions. Using non-toxic materials such as wood chips, boulders, grass, wood, and metal ensures these play areas are safe and environmentally friendly. By designing playgrounds that integrate natural features, we can create enriching environments that promote physical activity, social interaction, healthy immune systems, and cognitive development.
Residential areas designed with outdoor recreation in mind can greatly support an active lifestyle. Regular physical activity is crucial for maintaining good health, reducing the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. Studies show that even moderate physical activity, like walking or cycling, can significantly improve mental health, reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety. Incorporating features such as pools, fitness areas, and flex lawns for outdoor yoga and
group fitness can encourage residents to engage in regular physical activity. Trail networks for pedestrians and cyclists, enhanced with shade and scenic amenities like lakes, swales, streams, or old-growth forests, can make outdoor activities more enjoyable. Connecting these trails to small nodes and destinations further encourages their use, fostering a community that prioritizes health and wellness.
Educational institutions can
play a pivotal role in promoting the physical and mental health of students by having outdoor environments for learning, play, and community building. Developing bike networks and walking paths to enhance connectivity on campus can encourage students to incorporate physical activity into their daily routines. Studies have shown that students who have views of green spaces from their classrooms tend to have higher test scores and report higher levels of happiness compared to those with views of concrete or urban settings. These positive effects are
attributed to reduced stress and increased concentration, fostering an environment that enhances academic performance. Research from the University of Illinois and findings published in “Frontiers in Psychology” suggest that regular exposure to natural environments supports cognitive development and emotional regulation, significantly benefiting educational outcomes. Our team advocates for views of green spaces from K12 and university classrooms. Such thoughtful design strategies can lead to improved concentration, reduced stress levels,
and incorporating natural elements, we can create outdoor spaces that are not only functional but also restorative.
and a greater sense of community among students.
The materials used in outdoor spaces also play a crucial role in creating healing environments. Selecting materials that are warmer in tone and emulate colors from nature can make these spaces more inviting and comfortable. Using organic and flowing forms can evoke a sense of harmony and relaxation. Choosing plant materials that exhibit seasonal changes can stimulate the mind and provide ongoing interest throughout the year. By selecting materials
At KW Landscape Architecture, we are dedicated to designing outdoor spaces that promote health and well-being. We draw inspiration from the concept of biophilia and the wealth of research highlighting the benefits of nature on human health. By integrating natural elements, supporting active lifestyles, enhancing educational environments, and carefully selecting materials, we create spaces that heal and enrich the lives of those who use them. Our approach is grounded in the belief that well-designed outdoor environments can profoundly impact human health, fostering communities that thrive both physically and mentally.

Multi-family development has been one of KW’s leading sectors for the past 10 years. It has created opportunities for us to put our mark on a variety of cities across the nation, and in the case of Houston, contribute to the city’s downtown skyline.
In April of this year, I had the privilege of joining a multi-family panel with Interface in San Antonio alongside other architects and contractors where we spoke about the challenges, trends and opportunities we saw within this sector. I’d like to share some important details and projections that were discussed by my panel.
In 2024, the multifamily development sector in Texas has experienced a more measured pace compared to the rapid growth seen in previous years. Despite the slowdown, the outlook remains optimistic for a rebound in 2025, driven by improving economic conditions, innovative solutions, and ongoing demand for housing in major metropolitan areas like Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, and San Antonio.
While economic uncertainty has impacted investor confidence and financing for new developments, this period of adjustment is setting the stage for more stable growth. Developers are navigating
these challenges, positioning themselves for a stronger rebound in 2025 to 2029.
Although rising construction costs have been a hurdle, advancements in technology and materials are providing new opportunities for efficiency and cost savings. Developers are exploring innovative construction methods that promise to streamline processes and reduce expenses such as 3D printed building and units.
AFFORDABILITY FOCUS:
Addressing housing affordability is a priority. While it has been a constraint, it also presents an opportunity for developers to innovate and create affordable housing solutions that meet the needs of a broader population.
Regulatory requirements and zoning laws have posed challenges, but ongoing dialogue between developers and policymakers is fostering a more collaborative environment. Efforts to streamline approvals and reduce bureaucratic delays are gaining momentum, creating a more favorable landscape for future projects.
AUSTIN: Known for its
vibrant tech industry and desirable outdoor amenities/ experiences, Austin is poised for a resurgence in multifamily developments. Collaborative efforts between the city and developers are addressing regulatory and cost challenges, paving the way for new projects.
The DFW metroplex continues to
attract residents and businesses, maintaining strong demand for housing. Strategic initiatives to promote affordable housing and streamline development processes are setting the stage for renewed growth.
Despite economic fluctuations in the energy sector, Houston remains resilient. The city is focusing
on diversifying its economy and fostering innovation in construction, which bodes well for future multi-family developments.
San Antonio is leveraging its strong community ties, “steady Eddie” attitude, and collaborative spirit to overcome challenges. Its affordability aspect and close proximity to its sister city, Austin,
makes it a prime candidate for future development.
Post election, as economic conditions stabilize, with inflation under control and interest rates leveling off, investor confidence is likely to rebound. This will open up more opportunities for financing and
7600 BROADWAY SAN ANTONIO, TX
new developments. Innovative financing mechanisms and public-private partnerships will be key to unlocking new development potential. Collaborative efforts will help secure the necessary funding for projects.
GOVERNMENT SUPPORT: State and local governments are increasingly committed to
addressing housing needs. Incentives, subsidies, and streamlined processes are expected to drive a new wave of multi-family housing projects. Developers focusing on affordable and workforce housing are likely to find significant opportunities, supported by government incentives and a growing market need.
The underlying demand for multifamily housing in Texas remains strong, fueled by population growth and urbanization. This provides a solid foundation for renewed development activity.
Advances in construction technology, such as
prefabricated and modular methods, are poised to reduce costs and enhance efficiency. These innovations will make new developments more feasible and attractive.
While 2024 has seen a more measured pace in the multifamily development sector in Texas, the outlook for 2025 is bright. Economic stabilization, government initiatives, strong demand, and innovative construction practices are expected to drive renewed growth. By addressing affordability and securing financing, developers are well-positioned to capitalize on the positive trends and opportunities in the Texas housing market.
An easy way for everyone to stay up to date on local progress and development
changes is to ask your existing clients what they’re projecting for in 2025 and what needs to happen for them to be able to move the needle on their developments. Since many multifamily developers are not running at full capacity now, this is the prime time for us to meet with them in preparation for the next rush in development. Darin, Erin, Marla & I have been making a huge effort to do this and stay in front of all our multi-family clients.
O ne of my goals is for KW to contribute to the downtown skylines of San Antonio and Austin.
I have no doubt we will accomplish this within the next five years as multi-family development begins to accelerate!

This month, we are excited to highlight a resilient and versatile plant perfect for all corners of Texas: Yaupon Holly, Ilex vomitoria. This durable evergreen shrub is a Texas native plant and an excellent choice for most, if not all, of our projects, offering both aesthetic appeal and practical benefits.
Climate Resilience: Yaupon Holly thrives in the diverse climate zones of Texas, from the humid Gulf Coast to the arid West Texas plains. It can withstand both extreme heat and occasional cold snaps, making it an ideal plant for our unpredictable weather.
Soil Tolerance: This hardy shrub is not fussy about soil types. It can grow in sandy, loamy, and even clay soils, which are common across the state.
Sun Exposure: Yaupon Holly can thrive in a range of sun exposure settings which increase its usefulness on projects allowing for consistent plant selection regardless of how much sun the planting bed receives. Many times in enclosed courtyards, the same plant is used, but there is a wide range of vigor in the plants on opposite sides due to a lack or abundance of direct sunlight.
Drought Resistance: Once established, Yaupon Holly requires minimal watering, making it a sustainable choice during dry spells and for water-conscious gardeners.
Pest and Disease Resistance: This shrub has a natural resistance to many common pests and diseases, reducing the need for chemical treatments and making it an eco-friendly option.
Evergreen Foliage: The lush, dark green leaves provide year-round color and texture to your landscape, enhancing curb appeal and providing a lovely backdrop for seasonal flowers.
Red Berries: Female plants produce bright red berries in the fall and winter, adding a pop of color and attracting birds to your garden.
Form: Yaupon Holly has multiple varieties that can be used in our projects.
Yaupon such as ‘Pride of Houston’ can be used in reforestation areas or as an under-story tree and left to its natural form, this variety is highlighted by an abundance of red berries.
More formal varieties such as ‘Hastings’ are more architectural in form and tend to have the foliage sheared.
With a mature height and width of 2-4 feet, the Dwarf Yaupon Holly is perfect for small gardens, foundation plantings, and as a low hedge. Can be left as individual mounds or sheared into formal hedges.
Compared to Boxwood: While Boxwood is popular for hedges, it can be susceptible to blight and other diseases. Dwarf Yaupon Holly offers a similar formal look with greater disease resistance and less maintenance.
Compared to Dwarf Bottlebrush: Dwarf Bottlebrush can struggle or die in an extreme cold weather event, whereas Dwarf Yaupon Holly thrives.
Compared to Wax Myrtle: Wax Myrtle can become leggy and requires more pruning to maintain a Proper shape in a non-naturalized setting. Yaupon Holly naturally maintains its form with minimal pruning.
Dwarf Yaupon Holly is not only functional but also provides numerous design opportunities for your landscape.
Foundation Plantings: Use Dwarf Yaupon Holly as a foundation plant around your home to create a clean, structured look. Its evergreen foliage provides year-round interest and a consistent background for seasonal flowers.
Low Hedges and Borders: Create low hedges or borders along walkways, driveways, or garden beds. The compact growth habit of Dwarf Yaupon Holly ensures a tidy, well-maintained appearance with minimal pruning.
Mixed Shrub Borders: Combine Dwarf Yaupon Holly with other shrubs to create a diverse and visually appealing mixed border. Pair it with plants of varying heights and textures to add depth and interest.
Container Gardening: Plant Dwarf Yaupon Holly in containers for patios, decks, or entryways. Its manageable size and evergreen nature make it an ideal choice for container gardening.
Formal and Informal Designs: Whether you prefer a structured, formal garden or a more naturalistic look, Yaupon Holly can be easily shaped and maintained to fit your design preference.
To enhance the beauty and functionality of your garden, consider these companion plants:
Texas Sage (Leucophyllum frutescens): This drought-tolerant shrub with silvery foliage and purple flowers contrasts beautifully with the dark green leaves of Yaupon Holly.
Mexican Feathergrass (Nassella tenuissima): The fine, airy texture of Mexican Feathergrass adds a soft, flowing element to your landscape, complementing the dense, rounded form of Yaupon Holly.
Blackfoot Daisy (Melampodium leucanthum): This low-growing, droughttolerant perennial produces masses of white flowers, providing a lovely color contrast and a natural, informal look.
Salvia (Salvia spp.): Salvias offer vibrant flowers in various colors and attract pollinators, adding life and color to your garden while blending seamlessly with Dwarf Yaupon Holly.
American Beautyberry (Callicarpa americana): This native shrub produces attractive berries making it an excellent native accent to pair with the upright form of Yaupon Holly.
As Landscape Architects we struggle to find the perfect plant that can deal with all of the extreme weather events that have occurred in the past few years.
• February 2021 we have Winter Storm URI with record snowfall and the second lowest recorded temperature in Houston.
• August 2022 had 15 Rain days, in 2023 there were ZERO
• During the 2023 growing season, I saw more plants die on projects from over watering than died from drought/heat conditions.
Clients tend to have recency bias. After a freeze they want plants that are hardy, after a hot summer they want plants that can stand extreme heat, after flooding rain they want plants that can survive in swampy conditions, after a drought they want plants that don’t require a lot of water. There are not many plants that can perform predictably in all these environments.

In today’s world, the question “why” permeates our news, social media posts, and daily conversations. Why can’t we seem to agree on anything anymore? Algorithms serve up the news we want to hear. Lines are drawn in the sand that can divide friendships or even families. Yet, I am incredibly proud of our company. I believe that during these turbulent times, we are here for each other, and we truly support one another.
I don’t know if any of you have noticed but I am a few years older than most of you. With age comes a different perspective. What was considered cool in my 20s—transistor radios, in-person gatherings, Sony Walkman, Brylcreem, questionable hairstyles, drinking from a hose, starched Wrangler blue jeans—has long since changed. In fact, the concept of “cool” itself has evolved.
Is cool even cool anymore? Millennials face challenges today, such as whether to part their hair on the side, wear skinny jeans, or use the laughing emoji. Gen Z generation declared that these things aren’t cool anymore. This generation has grown up online, which shapes their views and experiences. Recognizing generational differences without overstating them is crucial. Despite our differences, our core needs are all the same—love, grace, meaning, joy, hope.
So, what do we do with all of this?
Appreciate Small Steps Forward: Value incremental progress in building bridges of communication and respect. Don’t adopt trends just to be trendy; genuinely appreciate efforts to connect. Reaffirm your principles, but don’t demand them of others: Being older doesn’t mean having all the answers. We can’t insist or demand that others share our values. What is most important is telling people that “No matter what, I’ll be there for you.”
Strive to learn, more than to win: There are two ways that we can respond when someone does not think like we do. Try to win or try to learn. Most of us do a combination of the two, however it is always better to learn first.
Remember...
• Winning is fun. Learning is hard.
• Winning is shortterm. Learning is long term.
• Winning builds barriers. Learning creates opportunities.
• Winning makes enemies. Learning makes friends.
Respond with grace and understanding. This may be the most important point. Remember to ask the question why to understand how we can all help each other grow as people. Always reply with grace and understanding. You will find that this is truly the correct answer.
I recall a time, not long ago, receiving a late-night phone call from my child, saying, “Dad, I screwed up really bad….” Moments like these test us. How do we handle times like this? How should we respond to someone in need, whether at home or in the office? I’ve been thinking a lot about this recently. What happens if
one of us or our family members is truly hurting or in need. Whether they are struggling with addiction, mental illness, financial difficulties, or other serious issues?
Insurance often falls short. How can we help in these situations? I want us to be able to help without questions.

We will be recognized and known as industry thought leaders.
We will expand our skills and capabilities by promoting exceptional talent and processes.
We will focus on collaboration to foster synergy between our people and studio locations.
We will contribute to our culture by owning our core values.
We will stretch by continually seeking learning and leadership opportunities.
As we reach the midpoint of the year, it’s a wonderful time to reflect on our incredible achievements and celebrate the hard work and dedication that have brought us to this moment. The first half of the year has brought exciting growth and remarkable accomplishments across all offices.
We’ve had the pleasure of welcoming several new, experienced team members into our team, each of whom has already made a significant impact in propelling our company forward. Their fresh perspectives and expertise have been invaluable, and we’re thrilled to see how they’ve seamlessly integrated into our dynamic team.
Our business development team has been working tirelessly, and their efforts have led to some major wins. We’re excited to announce that we’ve secured projects with UTSA and HKS, which are monumental achievements that underscore our growing influence and reputation in the industry. These victories are a testament to the team’s relentless pursuit of excellence and their strategic acumen.
Additionally, our marketing team has been shining brightly, winning several prestigious awards in Houston and San Antonio. Their creativity, innovation, and hard work have earned them recognition at a national level as finalists, which is a phenomenal achievement. These accolades not only highlight the exceptional talent within our team but also amplify our brand’s visibility and reputation on a broader scale.
Most importantly, we have hit our financial goal for the first half of the year, a milestone that speaks volumes about our collective effort, strategic planning, and unwavering commitment to our objectives. Achieving this goal is a significant indicator of our company’s health and sets a solid foundation for continued success in the coming months.
On a personal note, another big moment for me, after being together for 12 years, was getting married to Kevin in the beautiful San Miguel, Mexico. It was the perfect week spent with the people I love, adding a truly special highlight to an already amazing year.
Additionally, in my pursuit of running an Ultra marathon later this year, I’ve hired a running coach to help me reach this goal. Health, fitness, and wellness are a priority for me, and I am a firm believer in challenging myself to grow not only professionally but personally.
I am profoundly thankful for every team member and the incredible dedication you bring to your roles every day. Your hard work, passion, and resilience are the driving forces behind our success. Let’s take a moment to appreciate how far we’ve come and look forward to an even more prosperous and rewarding second half of the year. Together, we are unstoppable!
