FOUNDERS LETTER

Do you remember your first few days in college?

Was it a wave of sadness as you watched your parents drive away? A jolt of excitement at the first real taste of independence? Maybe both. I still recall that mixture of fear and possibility— wondering how the choices I made would shape the rest of my life.

Truth be told, my path was anything but straight. I left home not truly understanding what college—or adulthood—would demand. I earned a degree, realized it wasn’t my calling, and headed back for another. At last I discovered landscape architecture, and for decades I poured myself into building a firm that could stand among the best. There were peaks and valleys along the way, yet when I drive around Texas today, I see projects that confirm the effort was worth it.

Somewhere on that journey I began to wrestle with deeper questions: What have I been created for? What is my purpose? Those questions don’t always have immediate answers—and they can evolve as we do. For years my answer was clear: design exceptional outdoor spaces. Recently, though, it has shifted.

My new purpose is to be a builder of people—to help family, friends, and coworkers reach their full potential. That, I believe, is my God-given calling.

So what about you? Whatever purpose you feel stirring in your heart, pursue it with every fiber of your being—without settling.

• Landscape Architects- deepen your expertise in design and construction. Push toward licensure.

• Marketing & Business Development- stay on the leading edge of technology and trends.

• Project Management- hone your leadership and communication skills daily.

Live every day on purpose. Persevere when the going gets tough, and remind yourself why you started.

Three simple reflections help me stay centered:

1. Remember who is behind you – parents, grandparents, mentors, the history that shaped you.

2. Remember who is beside you – friends, significant others, coworkers who share the journey.

3. Pursue the calling ahead of you – the work that ignites your spirit and serves a greater good.

Purpose can—and often will—change with seasons of life. Embrace that evolution. For me, designing great landscapes was just the opening chapter; pouring into people is the mission now. Whatever chapter you’re in, pursue it wholeheartedly, and let your life’s work be glorifying to God..

Here’s to living each day with intention, courage, and unrelenting purpose.

River stone at Westpointe

A NEW CHAPTER AT RIVERSTONE

Residents at Riverstone at Westpointe in Northwest San Antonio are officially enjoying a new chapter of community life as KW, in collaboration with DR Horton, proudly unveils the community’s most expansive Texas amenity center to date.

This amenity center stands as the largest DR Horton has developed for any of their Texas properties, and KW was honored to help bring this bold vision to life. Together, we ensured that every element supports our shared commitment to creating vibrant, thriving spaces where communities can come together and enjoy meaningful connections.

SETTING THE TONE WITH A GRAND ENTRANCE

Our design journey at Riverstone began with the creation of striking entry monuments, setting the tone for a unique and welcoming community experience from the moment residents and visitors arrive.

KW led the effort in designing the expansive entrance monument using natural stone and steel roof materials to craft a warm, inviting welcome that reflects the character of the neighborhood. A flowing waterfall and a rich, layered plant palette contribute to an alluring atmosphere, creating a sense of arrival that feels both grand and grounded.

DESIGNED FOR CONNECTION AND COMMUNITY

This new phase marks a significant milestone for Riverstone at Westpointe, bringing to life a thoughtfully designed space where

residents can gather, relax, and connect with neighbors while embracing an active, unique outdoor experience and lifestyle.

At the heart of the amenity center is a spacious event lawn, draped with festoon lights and surrounded by comfortable seating areas that invite residents to linger and enjoy the atmosphere. This flexible space is designed to accommodate a wide range of activities, from outdoor movie nights and community festivals to casual family picnics, ensuring there is always something happening that brings neighbors together.

SPACES FOR PLAY AND ACTIVITY

Families are finding joy in the new children’s playground, complete with an adjacent party pavilion that makes birthdays and celebrations effortless. For those seeking an active lifestyle, the fullsized basketball court and multiple pickleball courts offer opportunities to play, exercise, and build camaraderie within the community. A shaded side lawn provides an additional flexible space for picnics, lawn games, or quiet moments under the Texas sky.

1021 MAIN

BREATHING NEW LIFE INTO A HOUSTON ICON

In the heart of Houston’s bustling downtown, a historic silhouette stands tall at thirty-two stories high. This tower, originally designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill in 1961, is the first modern office building to shape the city’s skyline. Now, it is transforming into something entirely new: a refuge for living, leisure, and connection in the middle of downtown.

When KW first learned about the 1021 Main Conversion, we were captivated by the vision of 3LRE and Lamb Properties: to transform this 1960s-era office building into a destination hotel and residential tower, bringing hospitality and vibrant urban living to the center of the city.

A VISION OF AN OUTDOOR OASIS

The client’s vision for 1021 Main was to create an outdoor oasis where residents and visitors could find calm and connection within the city’s energy. They asked us to bring this vision to life by designing warm, welcoming outdoor spaces that encourage relaxation and play.

For the ground level, we were inspired to continue the grid motif of the architecture and transpose a grid pattern onto the streetscape. We designed a welcoming arrival space for the hotel by gently sloping the sidewalk to meet the street, ensuring a clear entry that feels intentional yet elegant.

The amenity deck, located on the rooftop of the building’s existing garage, became our canvas for creating a layered outdoor environment that feels like a private resort in the middle of the city. We designed a range of program elements, including a recreational pool, BBQ stations, shade cabanas, sports courts, gathering spaces, and flexible lawns for relaxation and recreation.

THE CHALLENGE OF CONSTRAINTS

Designing for a landmark building came with its share of challenges. The garage and tower are recognized as historical landmarks, requiring our designs for the amenity deck to remain visually discreet from the street. Additionally, the limitations of the existing garage structure dictated the placement of the pool

and major program elements.

But these challenges became opportunities. We integrated movable planters and tree pots to provide greenery and shade while respecting structural constraints, crafting a comfortable, elegant pool deck that feels secluded and lush without being visible from the street.

AMENITIES DESIGNED FOR CONNECTION

We created pockets of intimacy within a larger amenity landscape:

• An entry garden with tucked-in lounge seating to welcome guests,

• BBQ stations with flexible seating courts,

• Ample poolside lounge seating for relaxation,

• A pickleball court and flexible lawn space for play and events.

While Gensler designed the architectural shade structure and bar, our team ensured that planting design,

materiality, and layout wove everything into a cohesive experience.

A NEW CHAPTER FOR DOWNTOWN HOUSTON

At KW, we believe that great design can transform how people experience cities. The 1021 Main Conversion is more than the renovation of

a historic building; it’s about creating spaces that encourage people to slow down, gather, and enjoy the city from a place of comfort and connection.

As this thirty-two-story tower transitions from an office landmark to a vibrant residential and hospitality destination, it will continue to shape the Houston skyline while inviting people to experience downtown in a new, more personal way—rooted in thoughtful design, hospitality, and the promise of urban living reimagined.

HUDSON PARK

A New Chapter in Branding and Design at KW

For the first time in our firm’s history, KW is offering billable branding services to our clients, integrated seamlessly with our landscape architecture design process. Hudson Park became the perfect opportunity to launch this service, enabling us to create a cohesive visual identity to match the client’s vision for the community.

WHAT BRANDING MEANS AT KW

Community branding is more than a logo— it’s the story, look, and feel of a place. At KW, our branding services help communities establish a clear identity that aligns with the environments we design. By bringing together our in-house marketing and landscape architects, we ensure consistency in colors, materials, and atmosphere, creating a seamless experience for everyone who lives in, visits, and moves through the community.

DESIGNING THE BRAND: FROM EXPLORATION TO EXECUTION

To begin the exciting journey of bringing Hudson Park to life, we first needed to define its identity. Brightland Homes trusted us to guide this vision for the community, giving us the creative freedom

to shape what Hudson Park could become.

Our team led a collaborative visioning session, exploring themes such as Hill Country Native, Prehistoric Discovery, Exploration & Discovery, and Starry Nights, giving the client ideas for what resonated with their

goals. The direction they gravitated towards was the Texas Hill Country, which embraced a modern aesthetic, blending clean lines with upscale details to set the tone for the community.

Trails were central to their vision, inspiring our final logo design: clean, intersecting lines forming “HP” paired with a modern sans-serif font, evoking the rolling hills and trails of the

Texas Hill Country. Our team then developed a comprehensive package including a monogram, badge, seal, and wordmark overlay design, providing flexibility for signage, marketing, and community materials.

We provided the client with a comprehensive branding guidebook detailing logo usage, color palettes, and typography, along with

a quick-reference onesheet for daily use and multiple file formats to ensure cohesive implementation across all platforms. These resources equip our clients and their internal marketing teams with the tools they need to start creating assets that will effectively market their community to future homebuyers.

INTEGRATING BRANDING WITH PROJECT DESIGN

Our team is designing the entry monument, recreation center, pocket parks, trail systems, and landscape lots at Hudson Park. With branding developed in-house, the design intent carries directly into the monumentation and signage, creating a unified experience from first impression to daily community use.

One particularly exciting feature is the entry monument’s rammed earth wall, a rare element in Central Texas that reflects the brand’s commitment to

The recreation center design also showcases creativity: using a Quonset hut structure to deliver a full-featured recreational center, transforming industrial form into a gathering space with a pool, bathrooms, and a welcoming porch area.

WHY BRANDING MATTERS FOR KW AND OUR CLIENTS

By offering branding services alongside our landscape architecture expertise, we:

• Eliminate the need for clients to hire

separate branding consultants

• Deliver a cohesive identity integrated with physical spaces

• Enhance the overall value of the development

• Generate a new, billable service line for our firm while strengthening our partnership with clients

This project sets a precedent for KW, reflecting our vision to expand the services we offer while aligning with our commitment to thoughtful, community-centered design.

LOOKING AHEAD

Hudson Park is expected to break ground in January 2026, with the recreation center set to open in time for the summer pool season later that year. We look forward to seeing Hudson Park come alive for its future residents, transforming our client’s vision into a community that people will be proud to call home.

TRAIL BLAZING INTO THE FUTURE

Introducing KW’s AI Initiative

As artificial intelligence continues to reshape the world around us—from streamlining business operations to enhancing daily life—it’s clear that this technology is no longer just a trend; it’s the future. At KW, we’re committed to staying on the cutting edge, ensuring that we don’t just keep up with industry shifts but help lead them.

Over the last year, our leadership team has taken a thoughtful approach to understanding how AI can elevate our work in landscape architecture and business operations. In January, our marketing team attended the SMPS Southern Regional Conference, where AI had its own dedicated session track. Then in March, Darin and Travis participated in a twoday AEC-focused AI conference in Houston. It became clear: the time to act is now.

And we know we’re not alone in this. Many of us are already tapping into the power of ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and other platforms— using them to draft content, summarize research, or even brainstorm project ideas. So, to take our firm’s AI capabilities to the next level, we made the strategic decision to bring in an expert to guide us.

WHAT IS AI, REALLY?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to computer systems that are capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence—like reasoning, learning, problem solving, and understanding language. These tools are not here to replace our roles, but to assist us with repetitive tasks, generate creative ideas, and help us work smarter.

At KW, the most relevant types of AI are:

• Generative AI (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini): Tools that can write, design, summarize, or brainstorm content based on prompts.

• Automation Tools (e.g., Zapier, Notion AI): Platforms that streamline workflows by automating data entry, communication, or scheduling tasks.

• Industry-Specific AI (e.g., Swapp.ai, Delve): AEC tools designed to assist with zoning research, site planning, and documentation.

In short: AI can be a second brain—one that speeds up your process, not replace your creativity.

BLAZING THE TRAIL

Part of our AI rollout is the implemention of a newly formed TRAIL team—a name that reflects both our forward-thinking mindset and our commitment to blazing a new path through the technology landscape.

Led by Chris Martinez as the leadership representative, the TRAIL team includes:

• Meredith Chavez – Landscape architecture and project management

• Nathan DeDear – Construction documentation and production

• Victor Duron – Business operations and process improvement

• Edward Garza Jr. – Marketing, storytelling, and digital content

Each member brings a unique skill set and a shared passion for technology and innovation. Together, they’ll be testing, reviewing, and piloting AI platforms with real potential to streamline our work—tools that go beyond ChatGPT and into operations, design workflows, documentation, and project research.

WHAT COULD THIS LOOK LIKE?

We’re not just imagining smarter emails or faster writing prompts. We’re talking about tools that:

• Generate timesheet entries based on your AUTOCAD usage or meeting schedule

• Automatically research code ordinances across dozens of municipalities

• Enhance graphic production, client communications, and workflow automation

This isn’t about replacing people. It’s about unlocking our creativity, reducing burnout, and freeing us up to focus on what we do best— designing and delivering exceptional outdoor environments.

HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED

As we begin this journey, we want to hear from you:

1. Are you already using AI tools? Let us know what you’re using and how it’s helping.

2. Heard of a cool platform? Share it! We’d love to explore programs that could benefit the whole team.

3. Curious or concerned? Let’s talk. This is a learning journey, and we’re in it together.

WHAT COMES NEXT?

In the coming weeks, the TRAIL team will begin piloting selected AI tools in specific areas of the business. Our goal is to evaluate their impact and, if successful, roll them out more broadly across the firm in the next 1–2 months.

We’re excited to explore how AI can support KW’s mission and enhance how we work. This is a team effort, and we want you on the trail with us.

Let’s build the exceptional, together—with AI by our side.

AI FAQ:

Will AI replace my job?

No. Our focus is on using AI as a support tool—not a replacement. It’s here to help you do your job more efficiently and creatively.

Is my data safe?

Yes. We’re only testing tools that meet strict data privacy standards. We’ll never compromise your information or the security of our projects.

Do I need to learn new tools right now?

Not yet! The TRAIL team is doing the research for you. If tools are rolled out firmwide, we’ll provide training and guidance.

GRAPEFRUIT GASLIGHT

This cocktail made its debut in Darin’s life at Wes’ wedding in San Miguel de Allende, where I watched — truly watched — as he cornered a poor bartender and demanded the exact recipe. Since that fateful night, no matter the bar, menu, or mixologist’s ego, Darin will order this drink. He now calls it “his drink,” which is hilarious because we both know it really belongs to that bartender in San Miguel, who probably still has flashbacks.

INGREDIENTS

Can I recommend a tool?

Absolutely! Let us know what you’re using—we want your ideas.

• 4 oz fresh grapefruit juice

• 2 oz mezcal or tequila

• 1 oz simple syrup

• 1 oz fresh lime juice

• Optional: Tajín + grapefruit wedge for garnish

DIRECTIONS

1. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.

2. Add grapefruit juice, mezcal, simple syrup, and lime juice.

3. Shake like you’re trying to impress a skeptical bartender.

4. Strain into a glass (rocks or coupe — Darin does not care).

5. Garnish with a grapefruit wedge and a Tajín or Salt rim if you want to be extra.

OUR CAD JOURNEY AT KW

A Year of Innovation, Standards, and Collaboration

A YEAR OF CHANGE

The past year at KW has seen a myriad of changes. We have changed how we draw, organize, access, and find assets for our CAD drawings. At the heart of this transformation is the successful rollout of one of the largest software packages in the firm’s history, moving from CAD F/X to an enterprise version of AutoCAD. With this rollout, KW now has access to a powerful, fully customized AutoCAD environment, equipped with:

• 7 custom ribbon tabs

• 150+ custom LISP programs and scripts

• 300+ firm-specific CAD blocks

A CULTURE OF FEEDBACK AND EVOLUTION

Long before implementation, we began gathering insights through surveys and training sessions, identifying pain points, frustrations, and aspirations from both users and project managers. We even implemented a suggestion form directly into AutoCAD, allowing users to submit requests as they see things that they need. Since its implementation, team members have submitted 46 feature requests. Of those, 35 enhancements have already been implemented, an impressive 76% fulfillment rate that speaks to the iterative

• A custom scale manager tool to augment Land F/X’s scale tool

• Standardized line types and plotting systems across all offices

• A reference manual in CAD, setup like a project using Sheet Set Manger

• An automatic layering system with a new layer structure

This wasn’t just a software upgrade—it was the creation of a fully integrated CAD ecosystem; designed around our users and built to resolve challenges we have been navigating daily.

and responsive nature of our internal CAD development process. This process also empowers every team member to directly shape the KW CAD environment.

We also launched a live-access KW Standards Reference Set directly within AutoCAD, giving users a centralized guide for standards, workflows, and best practices. This on-demand access reinforces consistency and empowers self-guided learning, giving our users the information they need to be successful.

A NEW ERA OF FOLDER AND FILE STRUCTURE

While much of our focus has been on CAD tools and drafting standards, one of the most transformative efforts this year has been behind the scenes: a complete redesign of our folder and file structure. This overhaul has not only addressed long-standing frustrations but also laid the groundwork for a more intuitive, scalable, and efficient workflow across the entire firm.

Our legacy system—used for over 30 years—had become increasingly limited, especially as it attempted to accommodate projects it was never designed for. Recognizing that even the best CAD tools are constrained by an outdated organizational backbone, we made rethinking this structure a top priority.

The process began with deep collaboration across departments. We engaged members from the AutoCAD Committee, Construction, Marketing, Master Planned Communities, Irrigation, Administration, Management, and Design to ensure the new structure reflected the realworld flow of our projects. The result is a clear, logical, and hierarchical folder system that

supports every project phase and discipline.

To streamline implementation, we developed the KW Project Folder Creation Tool—a custom application that allows teams to create consistent, standardscompliant folder structures with just a few clicks. Whether it’s a single-phase or multiphase project, the tool:

• Automatically builds the appropriate folder tree

• Creates and Names CAD files to match KW standards

• Creates and Names a Sheet Set for every package of a project

• Integrates with Ajera project numbers for searchability

• Adapts to project-specific needs without added complexity

The outcome of this process has been remarkable. We’ve achieved a 94% reduction in file storage space and a 72% reduction in the number of files and folders a project starts with—a dramatic leap in digital efficiency.

This new structure mirrors the natural flow of a landscape architecture project, simplifies onboarding, and reinforces consistent user experience across all offices. While technically outside the AutoCAD interface, our hope is that it will become an essential pillar of our production environment, ensuring every design begins with a strong, standardized foundation. To ensure the success of any project, it is important to set it up correctly from the start.

WHAT’S NEXT: A GLIMPSE AHEAD

The coming months will see the rollout of several highimpact initiatives, including:

• July: Base cleanup automation

• August: Advanced Xref management tools

• September: Grading tools implementation

• October: Land F/X Planting suite rollout

• November: Enhanced project setup (matchlines, keymaps, reference sheets)

• December: Sheet Set Manager integration

VISION FOR THE FUTURE

KW’s CAD initiative is about more than code and folders— it’s about redefining how we

deliver design excellence. We want CAD to be a launchpad, not a limitation. The future of CAD at KW is grounded in clarity, collaboration, and innovation. We envision a system that not only aligns with project workflows but sets a new industry benchmark for quality, readability, and execution.

FINAL WORD: GRATITUDE & MOMENTUM

We have accomplished a lot over the last year. To the teams who’ve adapted, contributed, and supported this evolution—Thank You! Change is never easy, but your attitude, commitment, feedback, trust, and flexibility have accelerated our progress and will elevate the quality of our work. We could

not have accomplished these initiatives without your input.

Although these rollouts have been significant milestones and two of the major initiatives are now complete, we remain committed to ongoing improvement. Some of these improvements will be iterative in nature, while others will be completely new. We are developing a system designed not only for current projects but also for those that future holds. It is important to note that this is merely the beginning, with much more progress on the horizon.

Together, we will keep moving KW forward.

FIESTA VIVA

How Our Medal Designs Honor San Antonio’s Spirit and Our Firm’s Creative Voice

Fiesta San Antonio began in 1891 as the Battle of Flowers Parade to honor the heroes of the Alamo and San Jacinto, starting as a simple flower-decorated procession. It has since grown into an 11-day, city-wide celebration featuring over 100 parades, dances, and cultural events, including the Fiesta Flambeau night parade and Texas Cavaliers River Parade. Managed by the Fiesta San Antonio Commission since 1959, Fiesta is deeply rooted in the city’s diverse culture, traditions, and culinary offerings, drawing millions each year to celebrate San Antonio’s vibrant history and community spirit while supporting local charities.

This special celebration is one that our firm has proudly participated in for the last three years by creating custom Fiesta medals for our partners and clients. As our San Antonio office approaches nearly 20 years in the community, having the opportunity to engage with Fiesta while showcasing our firm’s brand and voice is truly exciting. Over the years, our very own Casey Johnson has thoughtfully curated medal designs that capture the spirit of both Fiesta and our firm, with some even earning awards from our local SMPS Marketing organization. Here’s a look at the inspiration and stories behind the last designs.

OUR FIRST KW FIESTA MEDAL DESIGN

In 2020 KW decided to join the fiesta medal party. To commemorate our first official KW Fiesta Medal, we hosted a friendly internal competition to create the best design. When a winner couldn’t be selected, the team opted to combine their two favorites into one design. The winning medal captured the heart of San Antonio through its bold, bright colors and skyview-inspired graphic, marking the beginning of our Fiesta medal tradition.

TAKE A SHOT WITH KW: OUR BLUE AGAVE PLANT FIESTA MEDAL

The next year, our second Fiesta medal kicked off Casey’s tradition of designing our annual medals.

Her blue agave design, paired with the phrase “Take a Shot with KW,” reflected our belief that, like 100% agave tequila, KW offers the smoothest process, inviting clients to

partner with us to “Build the Exceptional, Together.” This fun design went on to win a local San Antonio SMPS award for Best Fiesta Medal Design in 2023.

TOPO-GRAPHO: A TRULY REFRESHING DESIGN EXPERIENCE

By 2023, we had fully embraced the spirit of Fiesta medals, turning what began as a fun design concept into a beloved collectible among avid medal enthusiasts across San Antonio. We designed “TopoGrapho,” a playful nod to Topo-Chico that ties back to our topography work and celebrates the land we shape as landscape architects. Layered contours echo the maps and models central to our process, while vibrant Fiesta colors add energy and joy to this design. This medal not only connected our profession to the community in a fun, wearable way but also made our firm a favorite among local collectors, who looked forward to adding it to their Fiesta celebrations each year. We again won a local San Antonio SMPS award for Best Fiesta Medal Design in 2024.

HONEY BEE HERO: PROMOTING ENVIRONMENTAL PRESERVATION

Our designs implement native plants and flowers that help bees pollinate through various environments. Bees and pollination are vital for maintaining ecosystems, supporting food production, and ensuring local biodiversity. With all the buzz surrounding this design, we sold a few medals to locals in the community and raised over $1,000 to donate to the Central Texas Beekeepers Association Youth Program to continue supporting the education and resources for students to learn the essential skills of beekeeping.

FLOWER BEETLE: CROWN JEWEL OF POLLINATORS

This is a colorful, dazzling pollinator with iridescent wings that open to reveal blooming flowers beneath. Inspired by the elegance of the Art Nouveau period, our medal is a nod to nature’s brilliance and the tiny beings that keep our ecosystems thriving.

A FIESTA FAVORITE AND CONTINUED TRADITION

Each year, the excitement around our Fiesta medals is a highlight for our team, with clients, partners, and new faces reaching out to add one to their collections. It is an honor to contribute to a tradition that brings people together and celebrates the

culture of this city we’ve called home for nearly two decades. We’re grateful they’ve become a sought-after piece that keeps us tied to the community we love year after year. We can’t wait to see the vision for our next medal come to life and to continue sharing in the spirit of Fiesta with all of you.

WE BRING PEOPLE OUTSIDE

LIVING OUR MISSION, TOGETHER

At the start of 2025, our leadership team took a thoughtful look at our mission statement with one goal in mind: aligning who we are today with where we’re headed tomorrow. After deep reflection on our profession, our values, and the legacy we want to build through landscape architecture, we proudly introduced our refreshed mission statement: We Bring People Outside.

At KW Landscape Architects, this mission is more than a slogan — it’s a promise to ourselves, our clients, and the

communities we serve that we will design exceptional outdoor spaces that inspire people to step outside and engage with the world around them.

THE POWER OF OUTDOOR SPACES

Nature’s impact on our lives is real, measurable, and backed by decades of research. Studies show that spending just 20 minutes in nature can lower stress hormone levels by nearly 20%, while access to green spaces is associated with a 12% lower risk of mortality. (Frontiers in Psychology, The Lancet Planetary Health)

Urban green spaces also play a vital role in strengthening community ties — they can increase social interaction by up to 83%, building the sense of connection and belonging that makes our neighborhoods thrive. (World Health Organization)

As landscape architects, this is our calling and our commitment. Every outdoor space we design has the power to improve wellbeing, nurture community, and protect our environment.

OUR MISSION IN ACTION: THE FIVE PILLARS

We believe great outdoor environments have the power to:

Create Welcoming Spaces

Build community, nurture belonging, and enrich shared experiences.

Inspire Transformative Connections

Foster harmony between people and nature.

Enhance Health & Well-Being

Encourage physical activity and provide restorative spaces that promote balance to reduce stress and lower health risks in your mind and body.

Advance Sustainable Practices

Preserve ecosystems, enhance climate resilience, conserve resources, and inspire environmentally conscious living.

Innovate with Purpose

Reimagine landscapes to meet today’s needs while shaping a sustainable future.

BRINGING THE MISSION TO LIFE

You may have already noticed this renewed focus in action — from the new branded KW hats that invite you to spend more time outdoors, to team site visits exploring inspiring landscape spaces in our cities.

I was reminded of our mission

recently when my son Jayden and I visited the grand opening of Mitchell’s Landing, a 200-acre fully accessible park with a pirate-themed playground in San Antonio. We joined hundreds of families who were out there to connect, play, and simply enjoy being outside together. Seeing so many people embrace a vibrant new park is proof of the transformative power of our work and why our mission matters.

Behind the scenes, our marketing team is developing an external video series that brings these five pillars to life, with our team’s own voices and inspiring project footage. These

videos will live on our website, YouTube, and social channels, giving all of us fresh tools to share our mission with clients, partners, family, and friends.

These are just a few ways our profession does so much more than “beautify” — we solve real challenges, improve quality of life, and strengthen our cities.

PARTNERING WITH LIKE-MINDED COLLABORATORS

As we expand our mission, it’s also a reminder that we do our best work with partners who truly understand the impact of landscape architecture. From architects, civil engineers, and clients, our collaborators shape how our designs come to life — and together, we can deliver places that benefit people, projects, and the world as a whole.

HOW YOU CAN HELP BRING PEOPLE OUTSIDE

Your voice makes all the difference. Here’s how you can champion our mission every day:

can extend pavement life by 40%, reducing long-term infrastructure costs.

Green infrastructure like bioswales and rain gardens can reduce stormwater runoff by up to 90%, protecting urban systems and natural waterways.

Access to green space within 400 meters (a 5-minute walk) is a best-practice urban design metric, proven to increase daily use and community interaction.

Talk About It — Be an ambassador for what we believe. Share what “We Bring People Outside” means to you and why it matters — wordof-mouth remains our most powerful marketing tool.

Live It — Make it your own. Get outdoors with family, friends, and pets on the weekends. Explore new trails or your favorite park, share your moments on social media, and tag KW so we can celebrate your perspective.

Champion It — Use every client meeting, partner conversation, or community interaction as a chance to share the story behind what we do and why it matters.

Our Employee Resource Group (ERG) is also working on new ways for everyone to experience and live out our mission together. Keep an eye out for upcoming activities, resources, and ideas.

TOGETHER, WE BRING PEOPLE OUTSIDE

As we move into the second half of the year, we’re excited to see how each of you will carry this mission forward — not just in the landscapes we design, but in the partnerships we build and the communities we inspire. If you have ideas for how we can grow this mission together — from sharing outdoor moments to suggesting new ways to tell our story — reach out to the marketing team or your ERG rep.

When we stand united in our purpose, we don’t just design great spaces — we create healthier, more resilient, and more connected communities for generations to come.

Let’s continue to build the exceptional, together, and bring people outside.

PLANTING THE SEED FOR SUCCESS

Helping Our Team Grow Through the KW Ambassador Program

We are excited to announce the relaunch of our internal KW Ambassador Program! This initiative pairs seasoned employees with new hires to help them navigate their first year at our firm, ensuring every new team member feels welcomed, supported, and connected from day one.

Born from our leadership team’s commitment to creating a more efficient and engaging onboarding process, the KW Ambassador Program is designed to provide a comfortable and authentic introduction to our unique culture—a culture that proudly celebrates our projects, our wins, and, most importantly, our people.

I am thrilled to be leading this program alongside so many wonderful team members who have stepped up to serve as ambassadors.

Their commitment to welcoming and guiding others not only helps build meaningful connections across our offices but also strengthens our teams and supports our shared vision to work better together.

PROGRAM GOALS AND COMMITMENT

The overall goal of the KW Ambassador Program is to foster meaningful personal connections that help new team members feel supported and engaged throughout their first year.

Ambassadors commit to meeting with their partners once a month for about 30 minutes. To encourage these connections, a budget is provided for casual meetups over coffee, lunch, or similar settings.

It’s important to clarify that ambassadors are not supervisors and this program is not intended to discuss work tasks, project deadlines, or replace any supervisory roles. Instead, it is purely designed to

BUILDING COMMUNITY TOGETHER

A special thank you to our ambassadors for generously dedicating their time to support our new team members. Their willingness to guide and connect makes a meaningful difference in shaping

a welcoming and inclusive culture at KW.

To all of the new faces this year, we’re excited for you to embark on this exciting adventure, and we hope this program leaves a lasting, positive impression on your journey with us. Together, we’re building not just a team, but a community.

BRANDING THE LAND

HOW KW IS ELEVATING COMMUNITIES THROUGH INTEGRATED MARKETING SERVICES

Over the last year, KW Landscape Architects has been on a journey of innovation— one that reaches beyond planting plans and paving patterns. It’s a journey rooted in a bold question: How can we help our clients tell a more complete story of the communities we help design?

That question led our internal marketing team to explore how we could offer more than traditional firm promotion. We began developing a new service—strategic branding and marketing support specifically tailored to our developer partners.

What started as a side project has since grown

into a dynamic new service line, helping shape the visual and narrative identity of communities across the region.

This initiative is led by Chris Martinez, KW’s Senior Marketing Manager, and Casey Johnson, our Senior Creative Manager. Chris developed the service

structure, including pricing and proposal language, and works closely with our project management teams to integrate this offering into client conversations. Casey, an experienced designer, leads the creation of all brand assets and collaborates with both clients and our landscape architecture teams to ensure

the identity of each community is reflected not only in visuals, but in the spaces themselves.

Today, their leadership has helped deliver branding packages for more than five masterplanned communities in just the last year— and we’re just getting started.

FROM PLACEMAKING TO STORYTELLING

As landscape architects, our role has always been to shape space—to design environments that are beautiful, functional, and enduring. But in today’s competitive real estate landscape, developers must go further: beyond quality amenities and infrastructure, they must build brands that resonate. They need a compelling story that sets their community apart.

Our marketing team brings deep experience

in AEC storytelling, brand development, and digital strategy. We offer a comprehensive suite of services that bring brand and place into alignment that include:

• Logo and icon design tailored to each community’s vision

• Typography and color palette selection for emotional and visual consistency

• Comprehensive brand guides and one-page quickreference sheets

• Education and wayfinding signage that reinforces identity

throughout the built environment

By weaving these elements together, we

Brightland prepared to launch Hudson Park, a new community in Georgetown, Texas, our team identified an opportunity to bring even more value to the project. We proactively introduced the idea of expanding our scope to include branding services—presenting it as a way to strengthen the community’s identity and market appeal from the outset.

During the early visioning session, it became clear that the client needed guidance refining their identity. Casey Johnson led the creative direction, partnering closely with the client and our landscape architecture team to develop initial vision boards exploring a

around these themes, we were able to help narrow their direction and clarify their goals.

Chris Martinez supported this process by guiding the scope, managing expectations, and helping Brightland understand how to apply the brand in various formats—both internally and publicly. The result was a seamless experience for the client, combining creative vision with practical execution.

Read the full project highlight story for Hudson Park on page 14, including how branding and landscape design came together to shape a distinctive identity for this Hill Country community.

COLLABORATIVE AND STRATEGIC BY DESIGN

What makes this service unique is its seamless integration with our landscape architecture process. Because our design and marketing teams are aligned from the beginning, we’re able to deliver brand identities that reflect the land, the lifestyle, and the long-term vision of the community.

This collaborative model eliminates inefficiencies and adds creative value. It also positions KW as more than a service provider—we become a strategic partner in placemaking and storytelling.

level of cohesion and care.

In a time when authenticity and experience drive buyer decisions, this kind of storytelling sets both our clients and our firm apart.

LOOKING AHEAD

As we look ahead, we’re excited to expand this service and continue partnering with visionary clients who see the power of story in the places they create.

A COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE IN A CROWDED MARKET

This branding initiative is more than a creative exercise—it’s a reflection of marketing leadership and a key differentiator for our firm. Few landscape architecture firms offer integrated branding inhouse. Fewer still have the capacity to design physical and visual environments with this

Our goal is to grow this new service arm into a meaningful contributor to the firm’s long-term success—adding at least $150,000 in new revenue to our overall company billing in 2025. It’s an ambitious target, but one we believe is achievable through the momentum we’ve already built and the continued demand from our development partners.

Because at KW, every place deserves a name, a look, and a story that reflects its heart—and we’re here to bring that vision to life by Building the Exceptional, Together®.

BEYOND GREEN

THE IMPORTANCE OF IRRIGATION IN LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE

Effective irrigation is a vital, yet often overlooked, component of every project. It plays a critical role in supporting plant health, preserving the investment made in the landscape, and enhancing the visual quality of a space throughout the seasons. Thoughtful irrigation design ensures landscapes remain sustainable and resilient, using water efficiently while maintaining the lush, thriving environments that enrich communities.

Alan and Brad, two of our irrigation specialists at KW, share below some common misconceptions about irrigation and highlight why this service is so important across our projects. Together, they support a wide variety of project types and help communicate these vital components to teammates and clients, ensuring every landscape we design has the strong foundation it needs to flourish for years to come.

THE CRITICAL ROLE OF IRRIGATION IN LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE

Irrigation is essential because it maintains plant health, especially during dry periods or in regions with inconsistent rainfall. A welldesigned irrigation system ensures water is delivered efficiently, supporting longterm sustainability by reducing waste and preserving natural resources. When irrigation is thoughtfully planned, it allows us to create and maintain vibrant, green environments without putting unnecessary strain on local water supplies.

ADDRESSING MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT IRRIGATION

A common misconception most people believe is that all plants can be watered the same way or that more water always leads to healthier plants. In reality, different plant types such as turf, trees, and native plants have unique water needs. Irrigating them within the same zone can result in overwatering some areas while underwatering others.

Another misconception is equating zone runtime with water applied. Irrigation application rates are measured in inches per hour, which vary by emission device. For example:

• Spray heads and nozzles: 1.5”/HR

• Rotors: 0.6”/HR

• Rotary nozzles: 0.4”/HR

A 15-minute runtime per zone would apply:

• 0.37” with sprays

• 0.15” with rotors

• 0.10” with rotary nozzles

To achieve 1” of water per week on turf:

• Sprays would run ~40 minutes per week

• Rotors would run ~100 minutes

• Rotary nozzles would run ~150 minutes

Understanding these details helps ensure water efficiency and plant health across the site.

HOW IRRIGATION DESIGN IMPACTS PROJECT PERFORMANCE

Effective irrigation design is a cornerstone of project success. It sustains plant life by ensuring grasses, trees, and other vegetation receive the right amount of water for healthy growth and longterm survival, preserving the aesthetic quality of a project and client satisfaction over time. Proper irrigation planning reduces the risk of plant loss, limits maintenance issues, and helps ensure that the landscape matures as intended, enhancing the value and visual appeal of the project for years to come.

EARLY COLLABORATION IS KEY

Collaboration during the early phases of a project is essential to integrating effective

irrigation design. This includes working closely with designers, clients, and project managers to understand:

• Local regulations and restrictions from municipalities or water districts

• Geographic information and climate considerations

• Available water sources, including potable and nonpotable supplies

Early discussions often guide clients toward using reclaimed water for larger, multi-phase projects, allowing irrigation flexibility during periods of water restrictions. Additionally, understanding seasonal watering restrictions helps guide plant palette decisions, encourages the effective use of alternative materials in place of lawn areas, and can highlight opportunities for artificial turf in high-traffic zones.

COMMUNICATING THE VALUE OF IRRIGATION DESIGN

To clients who may not initially prioritize irrigation, it is essential to frame irrigation design as a long-term investment and a key factor in

the success of their landscape. While many clients focus on visual impact or upfront costs, poor or inadequate irrigation can lead to plant loss, increased maintenance costs, and wasted water over time. By prioritizing irrigation from the start, we ensure the landscape not only looks beautiful on day one but continues to thrive sustainably in the years ahead.

At KW, we are committed to integrating thoughtful irrigation design into every project to support healthy, resilient landscapes that enrich communities while honoring the environment. We look forward to partnering with our clients to continue creating spaces that thrive and bring lasting value for generations to come.

SO YOU WANT TO BE A PLA

HERE’S EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT NAVIGATING THE L.A.R.E.

WHAT IS THE L.A.R.E.?

At KW, we’re committed to supporting our team’s professional growth, and for many in our field, that means preparing for and passing the Landscape Architect Registration Exam (L.A.R.E.)—a critical step toward becoming a licensed professional landscape architect.

Shade and Rob are helping lead the charge for those of us at KW who are preparing for these exams. Learn how they’re building a culture of encouragement, accountability, and shared resources to support the journey toward licensure.

The Landscape Architect Registration Exam (L.A.R.E.) is a professional set of tests required to become a licensed landscape architect, allowing you to earn your official stamp and seal. It demonstrates that you have the knowledge and skills needed to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public through professional landscape architecture practice.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS TO TAKE THE L.A.R.E. IN TEXAS?

• To be eligible in Texas:

• You need a BLA or MLA degree from an LAAB/ LAAC-accredited program.

• You need 6 months of experience under a licensed landscape

architect to begin testing (though you will need 2 years of experience to officially receive your stamp after passing all exams).

To register, you will need to create an account with CLARB and TBAE. CLARB will maintain your Council Record, which tracks your professional development, and is where you will submit your transcript and experience documentation.

HOW MANY EXAM SECTIONS ARE THERE?

The L.A.R.E. includes four exam sections:

1. Inventory, Analysis & Project Management

2. Planning & Design

3. Construction Documentation & Administration

4. Grading, Drainage & Stormwater Management

WHEN IS THE EXAM OFFERED?

The L.A.R.E. is administered three times a year over a two-week period each April, August, and December.

Whether you’re considering licensure or have already begun your L.A.R.E. journey, know that you’re not alone. Your KW friends are excited to support your professional goals, and we can’t wait to see more of our team members get that stamp!

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH THE

L.A.R.E?

“It’s been a dive back into academia, busting out the pens, highlighters, and notecards. I’m a real big nerd at heart, so it felt wholesome and fun. Section 1 gave me insights into tools that will improve my future designs!”

L.A.R.E. Q&A

“The tests cover a very large scope of information, so definitely be ready to study. I thought that Section 3 had a lot of useful, applicable information that helps with my day-to-day tasks, which makes it feel worthwhile right away!”

“KW provides a positive, supportive, and encouraging atmosphere. During the most recent test round, several people were interested in taking the exam, and it was encouraging to know I wasn’t alone and knew who to reach out to with questions. I also really appreciate that KW reimburses the exam for two tries, which takes some pressure off.”

HOW HAS KW SUPPORTED YOU THROUGH THE L.A.R.E EXPERIENCE?

“Having coworkers who had recently taken the tests was helpful and reassuring, especially when getting approval to sign up. KW’s reimbursement for test fees and study materials has been extremely helpful in getting motivated to start taking tests.”

WHAT ARE SOME TIPS YOU CAN SHARE WITH THOSE LOOKING TO GET STARTED ON THEIR PLA JOURNEY?

“Start by exploring the resources available and review the L.A.R.E. Blueprint on CLARB’s website to understand what each section covers. Consistency is key. Break your calendar into study blocks and set dates to hold yourself accountable. Don’t forget to have fun— try a new coffee shop or library and invite study buddies along the way.”

“Practice tests, study guides, flashcards, and recommended readings are your best friends, but don’t rely on any one source too heavily. The test questions change often, so understanding the concepts is far more important than memorizing terms.”

CHECK OUT THE TIERS OF DEVELOPMENT FOR MORE INFO ABOUT THE KW LICENSING REIMBURSEMENT PROGRAM

“We’ve started a small group chat, “L.A.R.E. Kids”, for anyone at KW preparing for these exams. It’s a space to share resources, encouragement, and accountability. Everyone studies at their own pace, but this group helps organize focused study times. Even if you’re not in the same office, knowing when others are sitting down to study can keep you motivated. If you’re interested, please reach out, and we’ll add you to the group!”

INNOVATIONCOMMUNITYINSPIRATION

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE TEXAS ASLA CONFERENCE

ASLA plays a vital role in advancing our profession while honoring the beauty, science, and impact of landscape architecture. In April, a few of our team members attended the Texas ASLA Conference in Houston,

where they had the opportunity to learn from industry leaders about the innovations, projects, and trends shaping the future of our field. Events like these are gateways to a wealth of knowledge, providing fresh

perspectives, sparking creative inspiration for future work, and offering opportunities to connect with others who share the same commitment to designing spaces that enrich our communities. For some, it was their first time attending,

while others have seen how ASLA continues to evolve and energize our industry year after year. We’re excited to share their takeaways below and celebrate the passion and ideas that are moving our profession forward!

Returning to the Texas ASLA Conference after attending once in school, Leslie found this year’s experience rich with industry insights, valuable vendor conversations, and practical examples of projects relevant to KW’s work. A standout session for Leslie was “Build Better: Contractor Collaboration for Climate Positive Design”, which highlighted how close collaboration with

contractors can lead to sustainable, costeffective solutions, like reusing native soil onsite to preserve seeds and reduce costs. Leslie also discovered exciting plant hybrids from nurseries and suppliers that could enhance KW’s plant palettes with hardier, climateappropriate options. Her advice: “Don’t be afraid to mingle; all the vendors are super nice, and prepare for the happy hours!”

INSPIRATIONAL REINVIG ORATING

Attending his first Texas ASLA Conference, Nathan found the event to be exactly what he envisioned: an energizing mix of networking, emerging technologies, and insightful panels. One highlight was discovering Arborstakes, a tree staking system that could reduce the use of T-posts in KW projects, improving curb appeal and reducing installation risks. His advice to first-time attendees is simple: “Just go and ask questions or listen; there is so much to learn and so many people to meet.” Nathan’s takeaway for the team is to send even more people next year to increase collective learning!

As an officer for the South Texas ASLA Chapter, Luke is helping strengthen and shape the organization while supporting the profession in his local chapter. For Luke, the Texas ASLA Conference is his favorite opportunity to get recentered within the profession while surrounded by others striving to make the world a healthier, more beautiful place through landscape architecture. Journal Prompt: Self-Reflection

What’s one way you can help raise the bar for our team by holding yourself accountable this week?

What’s one small commitment you can make—and keep—that would strengthen trust within our team?

The Power of Accountability & the Strength of a Team

At KW, our vision is to build the exceptional not just in the spaces we design, but in how we work together every day. That kind of excellence starts with accountability. When we each follow through on our responsibilities, communicate clearly, and support one another, we create the conditions for our team—and our culture—to thrive.

Accountability isn’t about blame, it’s about trust and commitment. It’s knowing that when someone says they’ll deliver, they will—because their team is counting on them. When even one piece of the puzzle is missing, the whole picture can be delayed. But when we each take ownership of our part, we make things move smoother, faster, and stronger, together.

Just as important is how we talk about

accountability. At KW, we’ve built a culture that’s positive, supportive, and team driven. But that doesn’t mean we shy away from feedback. A strong culture embraces open, honest conversations. Feedback isn’t criticism—it’s a tool for improvement. Being open to it is one of the most powerful ways we can grow, both individually and as a team. When we give it, and receive it, with intention and humility, we build deeper trust and raise the bar for everyone around us.

Every one of us has the power to set the tone. By honoring our commitments, helping each other succeed, and staying open to growth, we make this a place where excellence isn’t the exception—it’s the standard. Let’s keep showing up for each other and keep building something truly exceptional.

“Accountability isn’t about blame, it’s about trust and commitment. It’s knowing that when someone says they’ll deliver, they will...”
