Prepare to be dazzled by our fashion spreads, where we’re serving up looks inspired by everything from funky floral fashions to punk rock rebellion. It’s a mashup of styles, attitudes, and influences that’ll make you rethink what it means to be fashionable. But this issue of BRICOLAGE isn’t all about the threads. We’re digging deep into the real stuff too – like cultural appropriation, representation, and what it really means to stay true to your roots.
And of course, we’re giving a shoutout to all the awesome individuals and communities out there who aren’t afraid to push boundaries and defy expectations. From underground artists to social justice warriors, we’re celebrating the rebels, the misfits, and the game-changers who keep culture fresh and exciting.
So grab a copy, kick back, and get ready to soak up some style inspo. Whether you’re a trendsetter, a rule-breaker, or just someone who loves to look good, there’s something in this issue for you. Here’s to shaking things up and keeping fashion fun!

A mashup of rock ‘n roll and economic pollution provided inspiration. Edgy looks consisted of leather, band T-shirts, silver jewelry, and dark makeup with bold eyeliner. Apparel and accessories were a blend of items loaned from Obscured Boutique and students’ own closets. Contamination added a hard-core vibe to the shoot through plastic, water issues, and smog, showcasing the environmental dregs that plague our lives.

This past summer, Interior Design students embarked on an extraordinary journey through the diverse landscapes and rich cultures of Africa with our immersive study abroad program spanning across multiple countries on the lower half of the continent. From the bustling cityscapes of Cape Town and Johannesburg in South Africa to the majestic natural wonders of Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and the wild savannahs of Pilanesberg, this transformative expedition offered students a unique
opportunity to explore the intersections of architecture, design, wildlife conservation, and community development.
Our adventure began in Cape Town, where students were introduced to the vibrant tapestry of South African culture and history. From the iconic landmarks of Table Mountain and Robben Island to the architectural marvels of the Silo Hotel and Zeitz MOCAA, every corner of the city reveals a story of resilience, innovation, and creativity.

Students dove into different construction methods, finishes, and materials as they toured high-profile architectural firms like SAOTA and explored the historic diverse neighborhoods of Bo Kaap.
Venturing further, students experienced a scenic journey along the West Coast, visiting coastal resorts and exploring the unique construction methods and finishes of beachfront properties and Art Deco neighborhoods. They
engaged in service learning with local communities, participated in educational programs at Khwa ttu San Heritage Centre and Royal Village, while meeting people from different tribal groups, and were immersed with different communities.
In Johannesburg, students immersed themselves in the dynamic urban landscape, exploring high-end retail shops, architectural landmarks like the Apartheid Museum and Soccer
City Stadium. They met with faculty and students of design and architecture at the University of Johannesburg, gaining insights into contemporary design practices and innovative approaches to architecture and interior design.
As the journey continued, students ventured into the wilderness of Pilanesberg, where they got to go on exhilarating game drives and immersed themselves in the natural beauty of the African bush.

They learned about sustainable construction practices and eco-friendly design principles during site inspections at Kwa Maritane Bush Lodge and engaged in community engagement activities with local villages, gaining a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing rural communities, and how quality design can help to solve different complexities, that we often times do not see in America.
In Victoria Falls, students marveled at one of the world’s greatest natural wonders and participated in wildlife encounters and conservation efforts. They engaged in community service projects in the Royal Village, learned about local traditions and sustainable development practices, and embarked on a Chobe Day Safari, encountering Africa’s iconic wildlife up close in their natural habitat on both land and sea safaris.
Throughout the journey, students gained a holistic
understanding of the intersections between architecture, design, wildlife conservation, and community development in Africa- where there is mutual respect across all of those. Guided tours, hands-on experiences, and meaningful interactions with local experts enriched the learning experience, fostered a deeper appreciation for the diverse cultures, landscapes, and brought awareness of the beauty of the African continent.
