SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT OF LOCAL DEVELOPMENT Summary Every country, region, county, town or municipality aims at improving the quality of life of its inhabitants, and at enhancing local development. Managed development is characterized by a clear structure, continuity and relation between strategies and plans at every level. Development strategies, documents indicating development guidelines for key sectors of the economy, and those defining national interests, are created at national level. In accordance with these, development strategies are drafted at regional and local level. Without clear local planning, development becomes unsustainable and possibly takes an undesired direction. Sustainable planning and management enables identification of a society’s developmental needs in all areas, avoids inadequate economic coordination, incompatibility of economic subjects and inadequate social politics, and it enables preservation of the environment as a crucial resource of every region. Sustainable management of the local area is becoming quite common in developed countries, while this is not the case in undeveloped and developing countries. The paper aims to demonstrate the significance of the existence and implementation of a quality system for sustainable management of local development, and the consequences of the lack of existence of such a system. Keywords: sustainable management, local development, strategy
