e all know life is not always rainbows and lollipops.

However, over the past year, we have witnessed scenarios beyond our wildest imaginations. The rollout of 2021 has many of us wondering what is to come. Across the globe, we experienced individual and community challenges. From wacky twilight zone schedules, to expanding waistlines pushing our pajama elastic bands to their limits, to converting homes to home-office-school universes, all while consuming fear of the unknown from our phones and televisions every waking moment.

Yet during this pandemic, we also witnessed some of the beautiful moments of humanity.

As Francis Bacon said, “In order for the light to shine so brightly, the darkness must be present.” In the mix of the chaos, we witnessed beautiful lights among us, including essential workers. A big kudos to essential workers who helped when we needed it most; we humbly thank our truck drivers, grocery store clerks, teachers, police, ambulance and fi e dispatchers, IT support, and of course, health care professionals. Kudos to the good neighbors that checked in on the lonely senior. Kudos to all of you who shined your light during a time of darkness. You activate the sweetness of hope in this world.

In this issue of Kudos magazine, we share stories of hope, inspiration and motivation, highlighting communities, organizations and individuals who shared their light to make this world a little better. Some have even continued to share their light after their life on earth ended. I hope their stories touch your heart as they touched mine.

goodness to come and shine your light bright. Little actions from each of us can create a better tomorrow.

know a woman who runs through her apartment for exercise and logs a lot of miles this way. A minimalist, with few objects to get in her way, she jogs through a very small home.

She also reads or plays games on her phone as she runs, staying in shape and not bored a bit.

I am not advising this as a way to get more exercise, especially for me. I KNOW I would fall. But it does make you think. How creative could we get with exercise and our mental health?

winter of 2021. We have logged over 300 days since lockdowns began in the United States. We are not amateurs anymore. We are warriors. And warriors need to stay healthy.

I reacted as many did when everything hit in 2020. Nervously over-eating, seeking information, listening to the news, freaking out and losing sleep. It’s been scary.

But there is always hope.

Vaccinations have started. Many people have recovered and most of us have reprioritized what is truly important. Our health and the health of our loved ones is what matters.

How do you stay healthy and keep your family healthy?

First of all, the advice we have been given from the beginning is the smartest.

Wear your masks, social distance and keep contact with others to a minimum.

Wash your hands often.

Then have some fun. You ARE allowed to have fun!

Here are some ideas to get you started.

INSIGHTFUL, MOTIVATIONAL & INSPIRATIONAL

DANCE. This is fun physical exercise and music is a mood changer like no other. Get your children dancing with you. Teach each other new moves, which can get silly and lead to delicious laughter.

LAUGH A LOT. This is so good for your body and spirit. Funny movies, silly jokes, and chuckling help your body to relax. This may help you be able to fall asleep at night, which has been a problem for many of us.

SLEEP is important both physically and mentally. Make a schedule for bedtime for you and your children.

Stick to it. If you are rested, you will be stronger.

TRY SOMETHING NEW for your body and spirit. There are many free classes online, including yoga, which is non-competitive and for all ages. Encourage your children to find new activities you can do together indoors.

Remember something very important too. This time, the present, is all we have. If you realize that this time could be a gift, you may approach each day differently.

Start each day with gratitude for all you have and teach your children to do the same. Help them to be strong in body and spirit, and show them how we can all get through this together.

KUDOS ESSENTIAL WORKERS

Kudos to the many essential workers who got us through this past year; 2020 was indeed a record year.

It was surreal. It was monumental, and not in the way we wished. It was a uniquely stressful year for nearly every human on this planet. It was a tragic year in so many ways, yet here we are, like a phoenix slowly but surely rising from the ashes.

So, who do we have to thank for helping us survive this tornado of a year? Well, the list is long, but how could we have done it without our essential workers?

In my opinion, we couldn’t have.

When times were the scariest, they were there. A wide variety of essential workers made

weathering the Coronavirus storm possible, from grocery workers to truckers, teachers, police officers, firefighters, pastors, cal line volunteers, IT professionals keeping our signals running strong, and many more.

Our gratitude is indescribable.

During this pandemic, many of

us found comfort in the extra time we were able to spend with our families, while many essential workers were doing just the opposite. The medical community suited up and went to work on the front line and faced the challenge of distancing themselves from their friends and families to come to work and help our families.

They were dealing with long hours, constant protocol changes, and not enough protective gear. The stress, the worry, the toll was intense, yet they did it.

Not only did they do their jobs, but since patient visitors were not allowed, many stepped up their game in the role of comforter, even at a time when they too were scared.

One local doctor, Dr. Bobby

Mukkamala, affectionately referred to as Dr. Bobby by locals, worked with his son, designing and creating masks with 3-D printers. They had multiple printers going and collaborated with others, continuously working on new designs for more effective and comfortable masks. As a worried dad of an Emergency Room trauma nurse, my husband personally picked up one of these masks from Dr. Bobby’s home to drive to Port Huron to give to his daughter. Dr. Bobby GAVE that mask to us and so many others because he cared and wanted to help.

2020 is a part of our story, a story that our future children and children will read about in history books. They may think we were exaggerating when they hear that we weren’t able to leave our homes unless it was absolutely essential; unfortunately, it wasn’t. When we delivered that mask to my stepdaughter, I can remember

worrying about whether or not it would be deemed "essential" if my husband was pulled over.

Visitors in hospitals were even banned from visiting loved ones during the last precious days of their lives.

Schools were shut down, and nearly a year later, many classrooms still aren’t face to face. Masks were a must; hugs were a no, and my oh my, where did all the toilet paper go? I think it’s safe to say most of us felt like we were living in the Twilight Zone in 2020.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been surreal, and the fallout severe, but, back to that phoenix I mentioned at the beginning of this article, our essential workers got us through, and now we begin to rise from the ashes.

Essential workers, you are some of our biggest blessings of this awful past year. So many of us found silver linings in the storm. We found more quality time with family, much needed resets on our schedules and priorities, and a stronger appreciation for

Couscous (pronounced KOOS koos) is a grain food, made from crushed durum wheat. It is a staple in the North African and Mediterranean region.

It is prepared similarly to rice and they behave like sponges – soaking up flavoring in the water they are prepared in.

It is light, fluffy and delicious!

The recipe below uses little heat – the stove is only used to prepare the couscous. Perfect for hot summer days!

1 cup instant couscous ½ teaspoon salt 2 Tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil ½ cup diced roma tomato ½ cup diced cucumber ½ cup diced red bell pepper ½ cup garbanzo beans, drained & rinsed ¼ cup minced red onion ½ cup Kalamata olives 2 Tablespoons feta cheese 1 teaspoon chopped parsley 1 teaspoon chopped mint 1 teaspoon chopped basil ¼ teaspoon dried oregano

Dressing Ingredients: 1 teaspoon lemon zest 2 Tablespoons lemon juice 1 Tablespoon red wine vinegar ¼ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon black pepper 3 Tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

Directions

Bring water, salt, & olive oil to a boil in a medium saucepan. Add couscous and stir quickly. Turn off the heat and cover.

Let stand until tender, about 5 minutes, then flu f with a fork and let cool. Combine couscous, tomatoes, cucumber, bell pepper, garbanzo beans, red onion, olives, cheese, parsley, mint, basil, and oregano in a medium bowl. Whisk together lemon zest, lemon juice, vinegar, salt, and pepper in a small bowl. Slowly drizzle in the olive oil and whisk until a thickened dressing is formed.

Pour dressing over the couscous salad, and stir to combine.

1 Tablespoon olive oil 1 medium white onion, peeled and diced 2 medium carrots, diced 5 cloves garlic, peeled and minced 6 cups low-sodium vegetable stock (or chicken stock) ½ cup red lentils, rinsed and picked over ²⁄³ cup whole-kernel corn 2 teaspoons ground cumin 1 teaspoon curry powder pinch of cayenne (optional) zest and juice of 1 small lemon sea salt and freshly-cracked black pepper

Directions

Heat oil in a large stockpot over medium-high heat. Add onion & carrots and sauté for 5 minutes. Add garlic & sauté for 1 more minute.

Stir in the stock, lentils, corn, cumin, curry (optional pinch cayenne) until combined. Simmer. Then cover and cook for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the lentils are completely tender. Using a blender, puree the soup until it reaches your desired consistency. Return the pureed soup to the pot, and stir in the lemon zest and juice until combined. Taste and season the soup with salt and pepper as needed. Serve warm. Or refrigerate in a sealed container for up to 3 days, or freeze for up to 3 months.

1 bunch fresh watercress ½ cup chopped green onion ½ cup chopped cilantro 1 cup cooked edamame 1 mango, small diced 1 cup sliced cucumber 1 avocado, sliced

Salmon Ingredients

1 lb salmon, cut into 4 4-oz filet 1 tablespoon olive oil

Dressing Ingredients

2 clove garlic 2 inches ginger, peeled & diced 1 Tablespoon agave nectar ¼ cup rice wine vinegar 2 teaspoons soy sauce 1 teaspoon sesame oil 3 tablespoons vegetable oil Salt to taste

Directions

Sprinkle the salmon filets wit salt and pepper. Heat a nonstick pan over high heat. Add the oil to the pan and then add the fish. Cook the salmon about 2minutes. Then flip the salmo and cook another minute on the skin side. Remove, and place on a plate and set aside. In a salad bowl or on a large platter, arrange salad ingredients. Whisk dressing ingredients together. Top salad with salmon and drizzle everything with the vinaigrette. Serve!

Preheat pan on medium heat Add olive oil. Sauté small onion until golden brown. Add cloves minced garlic, crushed tomatoes, oregano, pepper, salt, bay leaves, tomato paste. Simmer ingredients for 20 minutes. Remove tofu from the package. Cover tofu with a paper towel. Place a small bowl on top of the tofu and press down to remove water. Put tofu in a bowl and gently break the tofu into little nuggets. Gently mix tofu into sauce. Simmer 10 minutes.

Add to your favorite spaghetti or other pasta.

CANCER GENETIC COUNSELING and TESTING ...OFFERED RIGHT HERE

Cancer genetic counseling and testing are lifesaving services—and they’re offered right here at Hurley Medical Center in Flint. The ultimate goal of genetic counseling and testing is to prevent cancer. Genetic counselors provide cancer risk assessment and support.

Testing is what identifies whethe an individual has a hereditary gene mutation that increases their risk for certain cancers. The most commonly found hereditary cancers include breast, ovarian, uterine, prostate, thyroid, colon, and pancreatic.

Jacqueline Smiley, RN, MSN, APRN-BC, an Adult Nurse Practitioner at OB/GYN Healthcare Associates in Hurley’s Medical Arts Building, is Genesee County’s go-to person for guidance on identifying and managing inherited cancer risk. With extensive training and experience, she is certified to counsel patients on their specific risks, as well as their options for prevention, screening, and treatment if they do have a certain gene and/or cancer.

insurance—including Medicare and Medicaid—almost always covers 100% of the pre-test counseling and genetic tests, so patients don’t have to worry about co-pays for this visit.

Since most genetic counselors work in labs instead of medical practices, these services are a gem in Genesee County. Whereas it takes months to get an appointment for genetic counseling at major health systems in other areas, there is no long wait here, with screenings conducted every week. What’s more, individuals don’t have to be a current Hurley patient or have a Hurley doctor—these services are available to everyone in the community.

Anyone fitting that description is encouraged to come in for a cancer risk assessment. Jackie cautions against relying on commercial DNA tests like 23andMe as such kits may provide a false sense of security.

Due to the limited manner in which they test, someone using a commercial test could think they were free from hereditary gene mutations when in actuality they aren’t.

She says they see it all the time.

‘‘

Adults are excellent candidates for genetic testing if they: • Experience cancer at a young age • Have family members who did • Are concerned about multiple cancers on either their maternal or paternal side.

It’s coming in for a discussion— testing isn’t mandatory.

If you decide you don’t want to get tested, that’s okay.

During the initial visit, Jackie follows guidelines from the National Comprehensive Cancer Network to determine inherited cancer risk based on family medical history. She also works with patients to develop a strategy for testing that fits their individual needs. Best of all,

Those who do elect to have genetic testing provide either a

blood or saliva sample. Results come in about a month later. The genetic counselor then explains the results in a way that is most helpful for the patients and their families.

If a patient does have one of the genes that increases their risk for cancer, they’ll be advised whether their family members also should be tested. Knowing the specific genetic mutation an individual has helps not only with prevention strategies, but also with treatment should they be diagnosed with cancer.

However, there are many options for individuals who get genetic counseling but would prefer not to be tested. Jackie stresses the importance of genetic counseling.

“It’s okay if they don’t want to know if they have a certain gene. But they can still get early screening.

We could even just look for the cancer itself and not any genes. At least have an evaluation.”

HURLEY FOUNDATION CONNECTING and SERVING THE COMMUNITY

Hurley Medical Center has been a beacon of light in our community for over 100 years.

The hospital and world look slightly different today, but the core principles of serving the community have never wavered. In 1908, James J. Hurley left a bequest of $55,000 and the highest point of property within the city of Flint for a premiere city-owned public hospital to serve all patients regardless of their ability to pay. Hurley Hospital opened its doors on December 19, 1908, three years after his death.

James Hurley was an immigrant who lived the American dream, working grit and grind to success.

Along his journey, he witnessed his wife struggling with a severe illness while living in poverty. He never forgot. As he stepped into success, he set out to provide a solution that continues to benefit the community today. Since its start, the hospital has expanded dramatically.

In 1993, Hurley Foundation was established, bringing innovation, resources, and community connections. Their foundation’s success has much to do with the community’s support, from volunteers, sponsors, advocates, media, and Hurley employees, doing their part, rolling up their sleeves, and getting involved in some capacity. The organization’s core values showcase how miracles

happen, each person doing their little part to make this world a little better.

Hurley Foundation has created programs to keep the community involved while continually building enthusiasm and support. They have put the “fun” in fundraising, hosting their annual Hurley Trauma Golf Outing, BlackTie Galas, Children’s Miracle Network Picnics, CMN Hospital Bowlathon, Radiothon, and more.

In 2020, Hurley Foundation faced a mammoth task adjusting all fundraising and events due to COVID-19. Throughout the year, the entire Hurley team remained dedicated to finding solutions for each roadblock they faced during this unprecedented time.

Pink Night Palooza. This event provides vital funding to support local families battling breast cancer, including emotional support system and financial elief for rent, utilities, food, medicine, and even co-pays.

Even with overwhelming COVID-19 obstacles, the entire Hurley team was determined to find a way to ensure “the show must go on!”

As a result, they created and implemented an innovative online virtual Pink Night Palooza that raised a little more than $190,000, breaking previous fundraising records.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Hurley Foundation Ball. Usually, attendees celebrate, dancing in black ties and evening gowns to support the hospital. Previous Hurley proceeds have benefited various hospital

Patty explained since COVID-19, “more people have been reaching out to help in some way and want to know how they can get involved.” She shared how heartwarming it has been to witness people getting their families involved, including kids who have started their own mini fundraisers to support the hospital to seniors making homemade blankets. One thing is evident, James Hurley’s vision rooted in serving the community still stands true. he last 12 months have been a rollercoaster, to say the least. If nothing else, it revealed to many that they were merely going through the motions of life, and not living the life they really wanted to live. What do you do when you come to such a life-changing realization?

Studies show that most people won’t stay committed to changing their lives long enough to realize their desired change. It can feel daunting when viewed on the surface and through the lens of our past experiences. However, it is not as daunting as we think, and it is definitely possible to stay committed to the process. How do we stay committed to the process of creating the life that we want until that change is noticeable in our lives?

The first step is the person looking back at you in the mirror; this can be difficult because we usually live a life based on who we think we are instead of who we actually are. Are you a person of integrity?

Do you do what’s right even when no one is looking? It is almost impossible to have the life you want without integrity. If you’re not honest with others, you won’t be honest with yourself, and you may start or continue to move the finish line. You can tell you moved the finish line when you find yoursel frustrated and going in circles. The ability to identify the gaps between the person you are and the person you want to be to accomplish your goals is necessary to create the life you want.

Do your habits support your goals, or do they hinder them? If you want a healthy life, you’ll have to ditch the unhealthy habits that are a part of your lifestyle.

A few months ago, my oldest daughter went through every teenager’s rite of passage, getting her driver’s license. After leaving the Secretary of State’s office, we decided to celebrate with a big breakfast of pancakes and hot cocoa. As we sat in the van eating our quarantine breakfast, I looked at her and asked, “Did you check the box?” She smiled back at me and said, “I checked the box.”

“The box” we were talking about was the organ donor box. I’ve been on the organ donor registry since I received my driver’s license when I was 16. For me, it was an easy decision, but I understand it can be more delicate for some. My daughter and I started discussing the subject a few months ago, and she immediately said she wanted to be an organ donor. I told her I was proud of her, but to think about it and make sure that was what she wanted.

Every ten minutes, a name is added to the national transplant registry, and each day, 22 patients die waiting for a transplant, due to lack of available transplant organs.

Gift of Life Michigan knows this and, in partnership with the Secretary of State, maintains the Michigan Organ Donor Registry. This registry contains a list of those who have “checked the box” and wish to help others by donating their tissues and organs to those in need.

Gift of Life Michigan began in 1971 as a way for transplant surgeons to provide a network for sharing kidneys. Operating under the motto 'We honor life through donation,' Gift of Life Michigan recovers over 900 organs each year from more than 300 donors. Through organ and tissue transplants, hundreds of lives are saved each year, in addition to thousands more patients who are seriously injured and sick seeing significant imp ovements in their health. Partnering with Eversight, cornea and eye donation is also managed, giving thousands the gift of sight.

As amazing as that is, there are just simply not enough organs to match the need for transplants. Every ten minutes, a name is added to the national transplant registry, and each day, 22 patients die waiting for a transplant, due to lack of available transplant organs. Just one donor can save up to eight lives and improve the lives of up to 75 people.

So, who exactly can be an organ donor? You can! When it comes to becoming an organ and tissue donor, everyone is a potential candidate. Many people hold the mistaken belief that certain medical conditions, age, or other factors exclude them from joining the registry, but that’s not the case.

While not every organ or tissue may be suitable for donation, every gift can have a life-altering impact.

The donatable organs – lungs, liver, pancreas, heart, kidneys, and intestines – can be lifesaving, while donated tissue, such as tendons, skin, and bone, can be used to rebuild joints, restore mobility, and repair burned tissue. The most commonly transplanted tissue, the cornea, can restore vision to those with various eye issues.

I have a friend from high school who received a cornea transplant within the last year-and-a-half, and she shared her journey through her Facebook posts. She was nervous and scared to go through the procedure, but her vision had

gotten so bad that she had lost her night driving privileges and just couldn’t put it off any longer.

She finally had the transplant, and her vision was restored.

Once she passed the vision test, her night driving privileges were reestablished, and she had her life back. The transplant gave her a second chance, and she was grateful for that. I followed and responded to her posts, supporting her along the way. I remember thinking how brave she was and how selfless the donors we e who gave her the gift of sight.

After researching this article, I wondered what would keep someone from choosing to be on the organ donor registry, so I reached out to Valerie Canary, Organ Donation Liaison at Hurley.

Valerie is a Hurley employee who works closely with Gift of Life Michigan and has been in this role for seven years. Her role is to work closely with Gift of Life Michigan to ensure the hospital offers patients or their families the option of donation. In cases where organ or tissue donation is chosen, she also facilitates the donation process.

When I told Valerie it was an easy decision for me, she said it is for some, and not for others. Some may have apprehension due to lack of information on the subject.

I found some frequently asked questions that may clear up a lot of uneasiness. Religion, age, and medical history should not have an impact on your ability to become a donor. Taking the initiative yourself also takes the burden off family members, should they find themselves in the position where they are being asked to decide.

It is simple, quick, and you can save up to 8 lives and improve the quality of up to 75 more with one click. hen you walk down the Hurley Wellness path on W. Fifth Avenue, know that it is more than just a paved walkway with ten fitness stations along the wa . It is a community effort, brought to life by gifts from Kettering University, Flint Land Bank, and the City of Flint, along with other community donations. These fitness stations, designed to give the walker a workout along their path to wellness, are interspersed between benches to provide a rest or to simply enjoy the outdoors. One bench stands out – a beautiful bench dedicated to Alisa Stewart.

It was Alisa who had the vision for this wellness path, and it was Alisa who had the determination and drive to get the community together to make it happen.

Sadly, she never would see the project to completion. Alisa died in a tragic car accident on March 24, 2020, as the project was underway.

Alisa was the Administrator for Wellness and Population Health Management at Hurley, but the void left by her loss was felt not just throughout the hospital, but throughout the community as well. A member of the Corridor Alliance board and executive committee, a mother, coworker, friend, sister, daughter – Alisa was such a big

When I asked Danielle how she’s honoring Alisa’s legacy in everyday life, she said she’s trying to say “yes” more, stating, “Alisa rarely said ‘no’ to an invitation.” One way to say “yes” is to become a donor. It’s simple, quick, and lifesaving. Another way is to become involved in your community. Join volunteer programs, donate to your community, or start a little free library. Every little bit counts, and you never know how much it may mean to someone.

However we choose to honor Alisa, I just hope it makes her proud.

he New Year is wonderful in that it is a refresh. DRESS LIKE YOU WOULD FOR AN IN-PERSON CLASS

T

he Coronavirus has impacted everyone’s lives, especially the lives of teachers and students who have had to adapt to a new, virtual way of learning. It can be hard to transition from in-person to online classes, which is why we’ve compiled some of these tips and tricks to make the most of virtual learning.

ASK FOR HELP

Don’t be afraid to ask your teachers or professors questions if you don’t understand something. Just because you can’t physically go up to their desk or attend in-person office hours doesn’t mean they aren’t there to help if you need it. See if you can schedule a virtual meeting with them to go over topics you don’t understand or send them an email with questions. Teachers are still there as a resource for you to help you excel in class; just because they’re now behind a screen doesn’t mean that they can’t help you.

STAY OUT OF BED

It’s tempting to do all of your classes from bed when you’re learning virtually. Your bed is comfortable, but don’t fall into the trap of slipping into bed for a class or two. Your brain associates your bed with sleep, meaning that you’re more likely to fall asleep during a class if you’re taking it from your bed. It’s also easier for your mind to wander when you’re in bed, making it hard to focus on class material.

Do yourself a favor and find a designated place, outside of your bed, to take classes.

They say, “Dress well, test well,” and the same logic applies to remote learning. To get ready for class, try to wear clothing that you would typically wear to in-person classes.

It’s easy to roll out of bed and hop on your computer, but changing out of your pajamas tricks your brain into getting ready for the day and prepared to work hard on school. Plus, you never know when you’ll have to give a surprise presentation and have to look nice.

GET RID OF DISTRACTIONS

Traditional, in-person classes don’t have the same distractions as online classes; it’s easier to ignore your phone and resist the temptation to surf the internet. Try to mimic the in-person environment by silencing your cell phone and putting site blockers on sites that will tempt you during your virtual class. Make classes the only thing you’re focusing on, and you’re bound to improve your engagement with the course.

HAVE A DESIGNATED WORK AREA

Whether it’s a specific room in your house, a desk in your room, or a portion of the kitchen table that is not in use, having a designated space specifically for work can help when it comes to online learning. Having a place just for schoolwork can significantly inc ease your focus when it comes to paying attention in lectures and while studying.

PLAN YOUR DAY

When classes are done from home, you don’t have the same daily structure as in-person classes. Give yourself some resemblance of a time structure by planning out your day; include time to attend classes, time to study, lunch breaks, and even downtime. Having a schedule can keep you on track to accomplish your daily goals, set aside time for studying for cumulative exams, and complete all tasks easier.

Paying attention to how we feel is the first step. Acco ding to Recco Santee Richardson, PhD, LPC, Clinical Therapist, of Hurley Mental Health Associates, it’s easy to be caught off guard if we become anxious, upset or worried. “We need to be mindful of how we’re feeling and have a plan for if we do start to have such feelings. We need to be aware of any subtle or sudden changes in our moods or behaviors,” he explains.

That plan he’s referencing is a plan to take care of ourselves.

It could involve getting enough sleep, maintaining a healthy diet, exercising, getting fresh air or just taking time to enjoy the moment.

“The things that bring a smile to our faces or make us relax, we have to make sure we do those,” Recco says. He encourages everyone to

make time for activities that bring them pleasure and joy, whether it’s reading, crocheting, watching movies or writing.

Although it can be depressing that many festivities are out of the question due to COVID-19, remain hopeful. Stay busy and take this time to plan for something this year, as soon as it’s possible.

In the meantime, use phone calls and virtual gatherings to stay connected. It’s also a great time to pull out those memory books.

If you do feel sad, embrace it.

“Let it run its course—it’s an important feeling. Depression is the accumulation of sad experiences that were not processed adequately,” Recco warns.

Since this time can be extra hard on children ages 8 to 12—more so than for teens, Recco recommends listening to how those children feel and trying to accommodate them as much as possible. The elderly, who often view family as a lifeline, also may find their mental wellness hit especially hard by the physical distancing required by COVID-19.

To counteract that, Recco encourages family and friends to send cards and make frequent phone calls to help their loved ones maintain that human connection.

From the moment I took my first drink at age 15, I have always had an unhealthy relationship with alcohol. Now that I think of it, I’m certain I was an alcoholic before I ever took my first drink

Back then, it was more about boredom, and I had two alcoholic fathers as proof that it must be OK. It was the 90s.

Everybody drank, and everybody smoked.

I continued to drink heavily throughout college and managed to make it through relatively unscathed, meaning I didn’t get arrested. I clearly was not setting the bar very high.

In my 30s, it looked a bit more glamorous. I was living in Chicago, where there is literally a bar on every corner. Hanging out in beer gardens, taking shots, drinking craft beer, and going out to eat expensive dinners with bubbly was all just a way of life when you’re young and living in a great city….or so I thought at the time. After a year of reckless living, I stopped drinking for 25 days. It felt like a really long time.

Alcoholism, alcohol use disorder, alcohol dependence, and alcohol addiction all have the same definition, acco ding to Google: “a chronic disease characterized by uncontrolled drinking and a preoccupation with alcohol.” In the program, we call it the phenomenon of craving. But it doesn’t matter what you call it. It is personal and different for everyone. All that matters is whether you consider your relationship with alcohol to be negative in your life. And for me, it was.

I didn’t wake up in the morning and start drinking every day, although I had done that when I was hungover. I do know that I had a problem stopping once I started. I also know that sometimes I would get so excited to drink after a tough day (I call it ‘the itch’) that I would start drinking, and once I was drunk, I had no desire to eat.

It was a vicious, self-destructive cycle.

My father had been an alcoholic my entire life. He always had a cocktail in one hand and a beer in the other. He was always drunk. In 2017, I got the inevitable call from my sister.

“Daddy died,” she sobbed. His death certificate ead, “Cardiac failure. Chronic alcoholism.” He was 67. I drank the next four months straight.

This is in my blood. The following winter, I got sober. This was the third time in my life that I had gotten sober for longer than a few days since I started drinking: the first time was 25 days, then 35 days, lastly, 105 days.

You would think my father drinking himself to death would have been enough to get me sober, but the thing

The next day, I expected to be reprimanded by my little brother, who has always been considerably more responsible than me - but it never came. is, alcohol wasn’t ruining my life. I had embarrassed myself countless times, but, in general, I was a successful person. I was responsible and educated. I got up and went to work every day.

I exercised and practiced yoga, and I had great relationships with friends and family.

My rock bottom came in the form of extreme embarrassment in front of my family. On Christmas Day 2019, I fell out of my chair while playing a game in front of my sister-in-law’s entire family—and my parents.

Did I mention that my stepdad was fighting for his life against congestive heart failure—also a result of alcoholism? My brother is nine years younger than me, and this was their first time hosting Christmas at their new house.

The next day, I expected to be reprimanded by my little brother, who has always been considerably more responsible than me—but it never came.

This broke my heart more than anything. He had accepted that his big sister was a drunk. This behavior was expected. I was almost 41, and I decided right then and there it was time to get sober, for real.

I did the first 90 days on my own, still not able to wrap my head around abstaining permanently—just hoping to make it longer than the longest time before that (105 days).

I knew that I needed some support if this was going to be different. That would mean holding myself accountable. I became involved with a 12-step program to share my experience with others who suffered with the same struggles.

My new family helped me to think of my addiction as

an allergy. My body did not process it the same as others that could “drink successfully.”

They understood me in a way I had never experienced before, and they kept saying this simple phrase that stuck in my head, “keeping coming.”

Well, I did, and I am happy to say that I recently celebrated one year of sobriety.

One thing I’ve noticed is that alcohol changed me. I realized I was extremely insecure, and alcohol was masking that feeling. Until, of course, the next day, when the crippling anxiety and depression kicked in.

I no longer waste days of my life lying in bed as I beat myself up mentally. I have more time to do the things that make me happy with the people I love.

I’m working on self-care and loving myself, spending my extra money on things like yoga and bubble bath instead of alcohol. Who am I? I no longer

feel depressed, and I live with a sense of pride that was never there when I drank alcohol.

I went from numbing my feelings with alcohol to feeling everything—literally overnight.

No one ever said quitting drinking would be easy, but my life is much easier than it was when I was drinking. I no longer have to wake up and apologize for something that felt natural to me, making excuses all the time that I knew were just that, excuses. Most importantly, I am no longer hurting myself and the people I love.
