Preparing your home for Winter

T

his autumn cleaning checklist will help you get organised and prepare your home for the coming winter months.

Outside The House Clean and store patio furniture, umbrellas, children's summer toys.

Touch up paint on fences, railings and decks. Use a wire brush to remove flaking paint; prime bare wood first.

Check caulk around windows and doors. Follow manufacturer's recommendations to re-caulk if needed.

Inspect external doors and garage doors. Do they close tightly? Install weather-stripping, door thresholds if needed.

Wash exterior windows.

Drain and store garden hoses. Install insulating covers on exterior taps. In hard-freeze areas, have sprinkler systems blown free of water.

Check gutters and drainpipes. Clear of debris if necessary.

Have chimneys and flues inspected and cleaned if necessary.

The Inside Story: We always talk of a ‘spring clean’ but doing a deep clean now while the weather’s relatively good will help you face the coming of winter, Christmas and the new year with a clean and comfortable home.

Focus on communal rooms: living room, family room, hallways, guest bathrooms.

Clean from top to bottom. Vacuum drapes and window treatments. Clean window sills and window wells. Vacuum skirting boards and corners.

Vacuum upholstered furniture, or have professionally cleaned if needed. Move furniture and vacuum beneath and

behind it.

Wash interior windows.

Turn mattresses front-to-back and end-to-end to equally distribute wear and tear.

Launder or clean all bedding: mattress pads, pillows, duvets, blankets, comforters. Tuck the family into a warm and cozy winter bed.

Schedule professional carpet cleaning early this month! Warm October afternoons speed carpet drying.

Carpet cleaning firms get busy by the end of October, so schedule now for best service.

Prepare the kitchen for Christmas cooking. Clean and organised kitchen cabinets, paying particular attention to baking supplies, pans and equipment.

Clear kitchen counters of all appliances not used within the last week. Clear counters look cleaner--and provide more room for winter cooking.

Pull refrigerator away from the wall, and vacuum the condenser coils. For bottom-mounted coils, use a long, narrow brush to clean coils of dust and debris.

Wash light-diffusing bowls from light fixtures.

Inspect each appliance. Does it need supplies, servicing or repairs?

Clean electronic air cleaner elements monthly for most efficient operation.

Wash them in an empty dishwasher.

Inspect washer hoses for bulges, cracks or splits. Replace them every other year.

Check dryer filter for built-up of lint, debris and fluff.

Schedule autumn gas fire inspections now. Don't wait for the first cold night!

Have the central heating system/boiler serviced.

Bleed and/or drain sediment from radiators.

Personal trainer Jade Parsons sheds light on energy and the body’s needs.

eeting increased energy needs is good for performance, managing weight and health. When you’re energy intake is the same as your energy expenditure, your weight should stay the same. It is an energy balance.

So when your energy expenditure is more than the energy intake, the shortage of energy will be provided by the bodies’ fuel store. These are fat and glycogen, which overtime will end up meaning a weight loss.

If you have a good diet it should enable you to train or exercise hard for a longer period of time. The energy requirements are different for most activities. This is why you should know the amount you are eating and if it is of benefit to your body’s functions.

When you are having a low energy diet and also doing high-energy activities, it can be very hard to maintain. You usually need to consume more food, so the food needs to be the right food!

You can workout your calorie or food intake and by keeping a diary and this helps keep you on track to meet your body’s needs.

Weight loss from energy loss is not always what we want. Usually we want fat loss not lean body mass loss, as lean body mass is more metabolically active than fat so will burn more when you are resting. When you go on quick diets it might lead to loss of lean tissue and also have affects on your health.

You should try to have a good calorie deficit of NO more than 500 calories and still try to eat lots of healthy fresh foods. Its not always the weight that will change, you should be watching your bodies composition changes.

The bodies’ composition has two components, body tissue (bone, blood, mus-

cle and organs) and body fat. Look at your body fat percentage as well as weight. New scales (bioelectrical impedance) usually do this or you can do skinfold measurement or even ask your local trainer (me?).

Exercise increases your body’s need for vitamins and minerals. This is because they help in growth and repair and your body’s metabolism. You can easily include the right amount of balance of these by eating a healthy diet.

Trying buying fresh food, local food and foods in season and steaming most vegetables to reduce the losing nutrients whist cooking.

Think about your body’s water intake and what it needs. You do not want to get dehydrated because you have now included exercise into your day.

Dehydration happens when the amount of water leaving the body is greater than the amount being taken into the body. If you wait until you are thirsty to drink, you are probably already dehydrated. Usually a person usually requires 1ml of fluid for every calorie they burn so during the day if you burn about 2000 calories you need to take in about 2000ml of fluids this requires you to drink about 2 litres. You must replace the fluid lost through exercise on top of your normal intake. Which means you need to drink more than 2 litres or become dehydrated, which is not beneficial and won’t encourage you to exercise more.

rigitte Trust volunteers offer a free service of emotional support, respite time and practical help at home, to individuals and families facing the effects of cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. During the past year we have supported over 300 Surrey families and we need new volunteers to continue and expand this vital service in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support.

Volunteers are invited to join one of the Trust’s free taster sessions in November, for a training course starting in January 2017. You will be supporting local families at a time of need.

Volunteers, who should be car drivers, are asked to commit 4 hours each week to local visits.

Nicola Dudley explains why DIY probate is not a good idea

t some point you may find yourself being responsible for the administration of a deceased person’s estate. This may be because you have been appointed as an Executor under a Will or because there is no Will and you are the deceased’s next of kin.

As next of kin you are entitled to obtain a Grant of Representation and will be responsible for making sure that the estate passes to the correct people in accordance with Intestacy Rules.

Without the correct knowledge it is easy to make mistakes, especially when the process appears relatively straightforward. To ensure that you do not end up being personally financially liable it is always advisable to take specialist legal advice even if it is just to check that you will be doing the right thing.

Some of the pitfalls of a ‘DIY’ Probate include: • Misinterpreting the Will or Intestacy Rules and wrongly distributing the estate • Failing to clear the deceased’s Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax liabilities • Not claiming any unused Nil Rate Band from a previously deceased spouse’s estate • Thinking that any gifts of either cash or assets within the last seven years prior to death are irrelevant • Not including the deceased’s share of any jointly owned assets • Regarding foreign assets as nothing to do with the estate • Failing to claim any relevant Inheritance Tax allowances or exemptions, which would reduce any Inheritance Tax payable (or wrongly claiming allowances you think are due) • Not paying the correct Income Tax, Capital Gains Tax or Inheritance Tax and leaving the yourself and the beneficiaries open to claims from HMRC

• Missing any on-going Inheritance Tax saving opportunities for the beneficiaries Even if you are fairly sure that none of the above apply it is worth taking advice to check whether there are any particular aspects that can easily be overlooked.

Obtaining Probate and dealing with an administration can be a very time consuming exercise and you may prefer to instruct a Solicitor to act for you.

You would still be the Personal Representative and be responsible for making decisions but would not have to deal the day-to-day aspects. The Solicitors costs would come out of the estate and you would be covered by their indemnity insurance if anything did go wrong.

Surrey’s Most Haunted 1: Knights, Reigate In Reigate, one of the town’s oldest department stores, Knights, in Bell Street, is steeped in history and has had its fair share of ‘ghost hunters’.

In a ghost hunt back in 2008, a medium and members of the Sussex Paranormal Society, held a seance where apparently a little boy called Tommy came through, who was allegedly murdered back when the store was a hotel. They also spoke of orbs (spirit energy) and messages ‘ coming through’.

2: St Mary's Church, Reigate Reigate even has its own dedicated Ghost Walk, which takes in supposedly spooky sightings in the area, including St Mary’s Church, where singing has been heard in the library after hours and an ethereal girl has been seen walking up the path.

3: The Farmhouse, Horley A ghostly presence dating back four centuries is said to mingle with the drinkers at a Horley pub.

Many punters at The Farmhouse know the tale of Mabel Hewitt, who apparently died there in the 17th century after falling down the stairs.

Farmhouse landlord Jerry Hudson has said: "Things do happen. I've seen a glass fall off a shelf when no one is near it and people say 'oh Mabel'.”

4: Haroldslea Drive, Horley Another tale of the unexpected is the story that marching troops slowly pass through the area of Thunderfield Castle

and Haroldslea Drive in Horley. A phantom bell is to begin to toll as the sun sets, slowly growing louder until midnight comes and a small army of men pass through the area. The castle is said to have been a resting place for King Harold's men as they marched to Hastings.

5: Box Hill According to local folklore, an eccentric sword-wielding officer, Major Peter Labelliere, roams the summit of Dorking’s Box Hill by his grave, where he was buried upside down, as instructed in his will, in 1800.

Another phantom rider has been spotted galloping across Box Hill at night and weary pilgrims have been seen stumbling over the Stepping Stones that cross the River Mole.

6: Betchworth Castle, Betchworth At Betchworth Castle, legend has it that a prisoner held captive in the fortified manor house escaped, and the proprietor, Lord Hope, gave chase. Spying a running figure in the shadows, the Lord ran him through with his sword, tragically killing his own son by mistake.

The ghost prowling around is not, as one would expect, the slain son, but Lord Hope, wringing his hands in despair.

7: Hampton Court, Kingston Further afield, the vast and impressive Hampton Court Palace, once home to Henry VIII, is one of England’s most famous haunted houses as well as being the largest.

edly haunt the palace include Henry’s two ill-fated queens, Kathryn Howard and Jane Seymour. Jane is said to be all in white carrying a lighted taper up the stairs but Kathryn, who was beheaded for being unfaithful, is said to shriek down to the chapel in an echo of the fateful night she was arrested.

8: Ham House, Richmond Ham House, a magnificent mansion south of Richmond, is haunted by Elizabeth Maitland, duchess of Lauderdale. Her spirit is said to walk the passageways of Ham House, the tap-tap of her cane echoing through the night. Her pet King Charles Spaniel dog has also been seen scampering around the place.

9: Polesden Lacey, nr Bookham Polesden Lacey, near Bookham, is said to be haunted by an unknown

apparition whose presence pre-dates the Edwardian mansion by centuries.

The monk-like figure wears a brown cloak with the hood pulled up, covering its head.

10: Tadworth Court, Tadworth And at the 17th Century Tadworth Court, near Epsom, home of the Children’s Trust, spooky goings on is said to include a haunted portrait painting, which when disturbed would signal ghostly sounds.

Fun and adventure for Walton on the Hill guides at action packed festival

GROUP of Guides from WaltonOn-The-Hill enjoyed a Bank Holiday weekend filled with fun and adventure at a Girlguiding festival.

1st Walton-On-The-Hill Guides joined 2,000 Girlguiding members to camp beneath the stars at Wellies and Wristbands, Girlguiding’s girl-only festival at its activity centre Foxlease in Lyndhurst, Hampshire.

During the four day festival the members of 1st Walton-On-The-Hill Guides were able to explore the site and choose from a variety of exciting activities such as football workshops with the FA, zorbing and kayaking.

Among the activities 1st Walton-OnThe-Hill Guides chose were zorbing, Segway run, human table football and watching live music dressed in their onesies.

Annagail, a guide from 1st WaltonOn-The-Hill Guides, was thrilled to receive a very special souvenir when she caught the drumstick thrown by Lew Rey’s drummer Ian Walker after the performance Beverly Heywood-Jones, Leader, said: “It was really great that the Leaders were able to do the activities with the girls.

We loved the segways, the bungee run, wrecking ball and the human table football. We also managed to fit in some leader training

and the leader only hot tub!”

As well as the huge assortment of sports and activities, the girls also soaked up the atmosphere in the evening when there was live music on the stage featuring the likes of The Voice winner Kevin Simm and X Factor band Alien Uncovered.

Girlguiding is the leading charity for girls and young women in the UK and this year’s Wellies and Wristbands is the fourth time the festival has taken place.

The event has been supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery.

From 3rd-7th October 2016 nurseries, playgroups, primary schools and mother and toddler groups are urged to sign-up to this annual, fundraising event.

Children throughout the country are being asked to don their pyjamas to help raise money for The Children’s Trust, the UK’s leading charity for children with brain injury.

For a voluntary donation of £2, youngsters, staff and parents can wear their favourite pyjamas for one day during the week and organise themed events, such as best dressed competitions and slumber party games.

Participating nurseries, schools and groups, who register, will receive an event pack which includes Humphrey’s stickers, posters, a certificate for each child, and a story booklet.

t has come to our attention recently that there has been a further push from companies phoning households claiming to be from BT and informing the user that their system is full of viruses and because of this they are going to terminate their service if they do not do something about the problem!

PLEASE, PLEASE IGNORE these calls, this includes people purporting to be from Microsoft. It is impossible for anyone to know what is on your system unless YOU HAVE ALLOWED THEM ACCESS. These people can be very intimidating and I therefore believe that it is far safer to tell them that you DO NOT HAVE A COMPUTER. They cannot continue
