Valentine’s Day Traditions Around the World France: The French like to think of themselves as the most romantic people in the world, and it’s often claimed on Gallic shores that the first Valentine’s Day card originated in France when Charles, Duke of Orleans, sent love letters to his wife while imprisoned in the Tower of London in 1415. Italy: Originally, Italians celebrated Valentine’s Day as the Spring Festival. The young and amorous gathered outside in gardens and tree arbors to enjoy poetry readings and music before taking a stroll with their beloved. Today on Valentine’s Day Italians prefer having romantic dinners and exchanging gifts. Also, there is a tradition of giving chocolate to loved ones and Italians believe that in this case, size does matter – the bigger the chocolate, the stronger the love you will have. Estonia: Valentine’s Day celebrations in Estonia have their own twist: February 14 is called “Friend’s Day”, so single, lovelorn people don’t feel left out. That means everyone’s a winner thanks to nice presents offered between friends and family members. On this day single people also get the chance to take a ride on a special ‘love bus’ where they can meet others looking for love. Japan: Japanese Valentine’s tradition switches traditional gender roles around, with women often presenting chocolates to men instead of vice versa. March 14th is then a day when men return the favor with white chocolate, which is why the March holiday is known as ‘White Day’.

6

Ghana: Though Ghanaians have adopted many of the same Valentine’s traditions as other parts of the world, since 2007, Feb.14 has also been known as ‘National Chocolate Day’ in Ghana, one of the world’s largest cocoa exporters. The move, which aims to promote Ghana’s contribution to chocolate production through museum exhibits and special chocolate-themed restaurant menus, was pushed by the country’s tourism ministry as a means of attracting visitors to the West African nation. Philippines: One Valentine’s Day tradition that has become increasingly popular in the Philippines is the mass wedding celebration, which brings together hundreds of couples in large, open spaces across the country to be married in a colossal public ceremony. Around 4,000 couples were married in Valentine’s Day mass wedding ceremonies in 2013. South Africa: Some young South Africans celebrate Valentine’s Day by pinning the name of their sweetheart to their sleeve, in a tradition that is known in the country as Lupercalia, in reference to the ancient Roman fertility festival that preceded Valentine’s Day in the West. Saudi Arabia: Perhaps the only country in the world where Valentine’s day is banned. In 2008 Saudi officials told florists and gift shops to remove all red items until after Valentine’s Day, calling the celebration of such a holiday a sin as it ‘encourages immoral relations between unmarried men and women’.

Legal Matters Solicitor Nicola Dudley on inheritance tax for unmarried couples

W

hatever you think of marriage, or civil partnerships, from a tax point of view married couples have a distinct advantage over nonmarried couples, single persons or “common law” husbands or wives. This is that there is no Inheritance Tax or Capital Gains Tax payable between a husband and wife or civil partners. It is important to appreciate that there is no such thing as a “common law” spouse, you are either legally married or in a registered civil partnership, or you are not. If you are not then it does not matter how long you have been together or whether you have children together, you will not enjoy the tax advantages of a married couple. Capital Gains Tax is a tax that is often overlooked because the most common property that is sold, gifted or transferred is your home. When disposing of your home in most cases the Principal Private Residence exemption is available to offset against 100% of any capital gain. A capital gain is the difference between your acquisition cost ie. the purchase price, and the sale price. There are deductions that can be made, for example the cost of major improvements and the costs of sale but otherwise any capital gain will be taxed at 28%. Every individual has a tax free annual allowance for Capital Gains Tax (currently £11,300 for the tax year 2017/2018) so if two people own a property the first £22,600 of gain will be tax-free. If, however, you dispose of property other than your “principal private residence” and other than to your spouse or civil partner then you may be liable to Capital Gains Tax. A “disposal” includes a gift or transfer into another person’s name. Capital Gains Tax

10

would, therefore, be a consideration if you were to gift a second property ie. holiday home, to your children or into a trust although there is the possibility of deferring the liability if the property is transferred into a trust. As far as Inheritance Tax is concerned, there is a 100% “spouse exemption” for Inheritance Tax between spouses or civil partners. This means that any part of your estate that you leave to your spouse or civil partner will be free of Inheritance Tax regardless of value. It is only, therefore, when the surviving spouse dies and the estate typically passes to children that any Inheritance Tax is payable. If you are not married or in a civil partnership, the fact that there is no spouse exemption available means that there could potentially be a substantial amount of Inheritance Tax payable on the death of a “common law” partner. An individual’s estate for Inheritance Tax includes the deceased’s share of any property ie. your home, and any cash assets regardless of whether ownership passes automatically to the survivor. In an estate where there is little cash but a property of substantial value this may mean that the house has to be sold to pay the Inheritance Tax. At best it could result in the survivor being deprived of cash in order to pay the Inheritance Tax when their partner dies. There are ways of reducing your estate during your lifetime to mitigate potential Inheritance Tax but if you are an unmarried couple then it is advisable to check your Inheritance Tax position. For further advice, call Nicola Dudley at PWT Advice on 0845 833 9025 or 07900 931478, email: ndudley@pwtadvice.co.uk.

Designer’s Secrets

Q

Interior Designer Ruth Marshall on readers’ decor dilemmas

I would like to add some interest to the walls of my bathroom but don't want to use wallpaper because of the moisture in the room, can you suggest any other ideas that would enliven the walls? It is a period property with high ceilings. The bathroom does tend to feel quite cold, so I thought jazzing up the walls might help?

A

A great way of adding detail to your bathroom walls would be to install decorative panelling. I would recommend the 'Georgian' range from The English Panelling Company (www.theenglishpanellingcompany.co.uk, Tel 01453 731305). This style is available in three sheet sizes and there is also room high panelling for anybody wishing to take the panelling right up to the ceiling. Bathrooms and cloakrooms are a great place to try more daring paint colours so why not also consider a deeper shade of paint on the panelling, as this can help a bathroom feel cosier. When calculating the quantity of panelling you require, allow around 10% extra for cutting, and don’t hesitate to ask their staff for advice you if you need assistance.

Q

I have recently relocated back to the UK from the US and have bought an apartment in a converted school house. I would like it to be ‘girlie’ and as the building is old I want the interiors to blend with the architecture. I have a small breakfast area in the south facing sunny kitchen which I would like to wallpaper in s omething really bright and cheerful, but still a little bit traditional. Can you suggest a wallpaper that would work well with an ivory shaker style kitchen?

A

Your new breakfast room sounds lovely and bright, so most colours will look great. To keep colourful traditional element to the wallpaper I have selected a trailing floral design (pictured) with vibrant apricot, pink and jade green colours to keep it fresh and feminine. The wallpaper is called Janta Bazaar from Thibaut (www. thibautdesign.com) – a fabulous American brand that I am in love with and supply to lots of my clients as it’s just a little bit different. I think it would work well with your simple cream shaker kitchen and architectural features. Janta Bazaar wallpaper from Thibaut

Chinese New Year

U

nlike our end of year festivities, which include a midnight countdown, Chinese New Year is a movable celebration – taking place on a different date each year. The New Year festival is centuries old and features several myths and customs.

Why does Chinese New Year fall on a different date each year? Chinese New Year is dependant on the lunar calendar – just like Easter and Shrove Tuesday. It can fall either any time between January 21 and February 20. This year it falls on Friday February 16. What Chinese zodiac animal will it be? On February 16, 2018, the dog will take over the rooster. Those born in the year of the dog (born after Chinese New Year in 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994 and 2006) are said to be honest, friendly, faithful, loyal and smart, with a strong sense of responsibility. What is the story behind Chinese New Year? The Chinese New Year has been associated with the Chinese Zodiac since the Spring Autumn Period (771 to 476 BC). The Chinese Zodiac runs on a cycle of 12 years, which each year being named after an animal. The 12 animals are Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. People are said to hold similar personality traits to the animal named after the year they were born.

20

What are the typical Chinese New year traditions? Traditions differ, but the main message of Chinese New Year is for families to come together and wish each other peace and prosperity for the year ahead. On Chinese New Year’s Eve, families will gather together for the ‘family reunion dinner’ and gifts are exchanged. One Chinese New Year tradition involves the older generation handing out red pockets (Hong Bao) filled with lucky money. These pockets are usually handed out to children or adults that are not married. Throughout the Chinese New Year celebrations the colour red, a symbol of good luck and prosperity, plays an important part. Red decorations and lanterns are prominent in the streets, homes and offices throughout the celebrations. The less enjoyable side of the customs is cleaning – sweeping is meant to rid the house of evil spirits, but families put away brooms on Chinese New Year’s Day to ensure they don’t accidentally sweep away good luck too. How do you say Happy New Year in Chinese? Kung Hei Fat Choi is a traditional Chinese New Year greeting meaning ‘Congratulations and best wishes for a prosperous New Year!

eat to be slim

N

In her regular column, weight loss guru Olivia Parry gives advice on sticking to New Year’s resolutions with... chocolate!

ew Year’s resolutions often include a resolve to lose weight. One reason why New Year’s resolutions fail is because people often set unrealistic goals once a year, and when no weight is lost, they end up feel defeated, and give up. This makes people feel bad. Human behaviour is centred on people doing everything in their power to avoiding feeling pain, and doing everything in their power to feel pleasure. Research from UCL shows that it takes 66 days on average (not 21 days as was believed) to develop a habit or behaviour. Therefore, it is much more helpful to set a goal of behaviour change which is not an ‘all or nothing’ goal. It is much more effective to set 30 day ‘process’ goal that you’re able to meet than just a one-off big goal, say to lose 3 stone. One interim goal of losing half a stone in 30 days, would result in good feelings together with a sense of accomplishment. Then when that goal is achieved simply set another goal. A helpful behaviour change would be to change the habit of eating a daily bar of milk chocolate to eating a high cocoa content chocolate such as 70% and 90%. A really good choice would be homemade chocolate (see recipe below). If weight loss is your goal, it is preferable to save eating it at the weekends. Cocoa is a healthy food, and rich in Magnesium which is important for maintaining nerve and muscle function and better bone and immune system health. Having a deficiency of Magnesium can cause muscle spasms and cramps, anxiety, migraines and osteoporosis. Another alter-

24

native, which may be enjoyed on a daily basis is a cup of hot cocoa, but sweetened with stevia not sugar and made with water and full fat coconut milk, not skimmed milk. Another source of weight gain especially amongst middle and professional classes their daily fix of a glass of wine. Some people decide to have a dry January. Following a festive period, giving your liver and kidneys a rest is an excellent behaviour change. Simply making a decision and doing it is simple and can be done. An even better way going forward would be to decide to drink only at the weekends for February. Then make another decision. Recipe for dairy free delicious chocolate: Ingredients 40g local honey or maple syrup 40g organic unsweetened cocoa or cacao powder 150g coconut butter or coconut oil Method Prepare silicon mini muffin cases Melt the coconut oil/butter gently Add the cocoa powder and honey and whisk well (be careful not to burn) Pour chocolate mixture into individual portions ensuring the honey is well mixed. To add ‘caramel’ divide a Mejdool date into pieces, and drop these into the mixture for extra flavour Place in the freezer and leave for 2 hours to set Enjoy! Get Fit For Life!

A

PT Jade Simmons offers a strategy for keeping your exercise routine going over Christmas and the New Year

fter New Year, did you plan to be healthier, lose body fat, and make wiser food choices? Have you kept it up? Have you set new goals? Have you just given up? The goals you set require a measure of dedication, consistency and hard work. This is sometimes hard to do on your own. Did you get frustrated because it didn’t happen quickly enough? Usually we set ourselves up for failure as we set the bar too high! Maybe you haven’t been able to reach the numbers you were aiming for, or you messed up your eating by having a bad day and now you have completely given up! If you want to get fit or transform your body, you need the proper motivation to do more exercise or go to the gym and making good choices in the kitchen. Getting motivated is hard sometimes. So as soon as you feel motivated by anything you need to put it to action otherwise it will be lost. • Motivation should lead to actions. • Actions lead to results. • Results will lead to more motivation. • Then its just one lovely circle of motivation! The problem is that as soon as you do or don’t see results you stop. Then you are not consistent, meaning you have to start again at some point. The sooner you act the better it will be!

28

Do more together As I said before, it’s hard to keep dedicated and consistent on your own. So maybe look for something different. I run a Leg, Bums and Tums class in lower Kingswood and my Husband and I run a indoor Bootcamp in Kingswood. I have found that doing stuff together as a group makes people more keen to keep it up, keeps them more driven and then leads to them hitting there goals! Having someone to answer to means you will work that little bit harder. Also if you workout at home as soon as you get tired you are more likely to slow down and stop. At a class there is motivation to help get the best out of you with watching your limitations. Working out together as group, with a friend and also with new people is very satisfying we all need to be more social and why not sweat a bit together, have a laugh and get fit! Going to a Bootcamp with the local people around you that you should know but don’t yet is great for the community. It will build a small bond for the community and hopefully we can all make new friends. Give it a try and see how we can change you and set new goals for you. Call Jade Simmons on 07545240945 Daniel Simmons on 07564525351 www.simmonsfit.co.uk Simmons Bootcamp, Saturday 9am, Kingswood Village Hall, Waterhouse Lane, Kingswood KT20 6EB Legs, Bums and Tums, Friday 9.30am Church Hall, Buckland Road, Lower Kingswood, KT20 7DN

Here I hope are a few helpful hints on what to look out for: When reading an email from a company that you may not know, hover over the email to see if it really is from the company they are purporting to be from to reveal the real email address. Never click on a link within an email if you are at all suspicious, go to the company web site instead and log into your account from a separate page. Fraudsters ask for immediate action. Be wary of emails containing phrases like ‘you only have 3 days to reply’ or
