I

’m John Doyle, a qualified electrician. I had my personal ‘lightbulb’ moment 15 years ago. In lighting a garden, I suddenly saw the incredible impact I could make with creative and cleverly installed lights. I realised how integral the lighting was to set off a stunning garden design and how poor or non-existent lights could let it down.

Since then, garden lighting has been my passion and my profession. I have found my practical skills as an electrician, combined with my talent for creativity and artistic interest, make me perfectly placed to complement the work of garden designers, landscapers and people investing in their gardens. I remain fascinated by challenges and interesting briefs; gardens for socialising in, planting schemes that can be enhanced, the trend towards winter gardens and all year-round outdoor dining. The potential for lighting a garden is huge, I can see it the minute I walk into a home. And it starts at the front door. Style and functionality are everything when it comes to any design and garden lighting is no different. When I advise on outdoor lighting it will reflect your internal lighting, personality and preferences. As I highlighted to a group of Garden Designers in a talk recently, the darker it is, the less light you need. This is because in contrast to total darkness, a tiny amount of light can create a vast amount of illumination. Light is there to create an illuminating effect, not draw attention to itself. Understanding this is one thing, but applying it is another, and that’s why garden lighting is such a delicate balance. Carefully thought out, expertly and safely installed outdoor lighting solutions are what I live and breathe every day. If you would like me to look at your garden or project, contact me now.

Mother’s Day 31st March Origin Origin of Mother's Day goes back to the era of ancient Greek & Romans. But the roots of Mother's Day can also be traced in the UK where a Mothering Sunday was celebrated much before the festival saw the light of the day in US. However, the celebration of the festival as it is seen today is a recent phenomenon and not even a hundred years old. Today the festival of Mother’s day is celebrated across 46 countries (though on different dates) and is a hugely popular affair. Millions of people across the globe take the day as an opportunity to honor their mothers, thank them for their efforts in giving them life, raising them and being their constant support. Earliest History of Mothers Day The earliest history of Mother’s Day dates back to the ancient annual spring festival the Greeks dedicated to maternal goddesses. The Greeks used the occasion to honor Rhea, wife of Cronus and the mother of many deities of Greek mythology. Ancient Romans, too, celebrated a spring festival, called Hilaria dedicated to Cybele, a mother goddess. It may be noted that ceremonies in honour of Cybele began some 250 years before Christ was born. The celebration made on the Ides of March by making offerings in the temple of Cybele lasted for three days and included parades, games and masquerades. The celebrations were notorious enough that followers of Cybele were banished from Rome. Early Christians celebrated a Mother's Day of sorts during the festival on the fourth Sunday of Lent in honor of the Virgin Mary, the Mother of Christ. The holiday was expanded to include all

6

mothers. It was then called Mothering Sunday. Modern History of Mothering Sunday The more recent history of Mother’s Day dates back to 1600s in England. Here a Mothering Sunday was celebrated annually on the fourth Sunday of Lent to honor mothers. After a prayer service in church to honor Virgin Mary, children brought gifts and flowers to pay tribute to their own mothers. On the occasion, servants, apprentices and other employees staying away from their homes were encouraged by their employers to visit their mothers and honor them. Traditionally children brought with them gifts and a special fruit cake or fruit-filled pastry called a simnel. Custom of celebrating Mothering Sunday died out almost completely by the 19th century. However, the day came to be celebrated again after World War II, when American servicemen brought the custom and commercial enterprises used it as an occasion for sales. Present Day Celebrations Today Mothers Day is celebrated in several countries including US, UK, India, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, Mexico, Canada, China, Japan and Belgium. People take the day as an opportunity to pay tribute to their mothers and thank them for all their love and support. The tradition of gifting flowers, cards and others gift to mothers on the Mother’s Day is global. Although many would argue that it has become too commercialised with florists, card manufacturers and gift sellers seeing huge business potential in the day and make good money through a rigorous advertising campaign.

Wardrobe Detox Style guru Carole Ann Geddes walks you through the perfect lockdown project of organising your wardrobe.

Y

es we are still in lockdown and Spring is approaching. Just the right time to look at your wardrobe. Assess it, edit it and give it order to achieve an aesthetically pleasing storage space. And then resell, dispose or re-purpose those items you no longer wear. I’ve been helping people sort their wardrobes for 15 years and it is true to say most wear 20% of their clothes 80% of the time. I’m going to give you some general rules and tips to allow you to see what you have and find it easily. You will have rules for: 1) Editing your clothes and accessories 2) Have rules to layout your wardrobe so it’s easy to shop. 3) Ideas on how to resell or dispose your rejected items. This is a satisfying, rejuvenating and

8

even a therapeutic experience, I promise, and you can take on some principles for other areas of your home. Calm and order will restore chaos and anxiety. Allocate some time to do this and depending on your wardrobe/storage areas maybe break down into manageable slots of time, so you don’t lose motivation. Maybe start with easier, smaller areas eg: a drawer and work up to the big wardrobe. It may be useful to have a helper, someone in your home who would enjoy this as well. Or it can be done on zoom as I have successfully done with clients. I’m suggesting you do this twice a year. In March you can begin to edit out your chunky jumpers etc and bring in the lighter fabrics like cotton and linen. In October it is time to put away summery items. So it’s a cycle. You will

each dress and decide which pile it’s going into. Eventually we have to make some decisions about that maybe pile. Give yourself a bit of time and then decide is it keep or dispose? Clean that wardrobe out. Put all the Dresses you will wear for the next 6 months in the same non-slip hanger facing the same way and arrange into the wardrobe from light colours to dark colours. Patterned dresses can go in with the dresses of it’s dominant colour. Now do the same with tops, trousers, coats, shoes handbags and all the other categories of clothes. Knitwear may be better in an Ottoman or in drawers but you can still do it in colour order. Have a look online for great storage aids – boxes, dividers, bags. You should end up with easy to look at storage area with items all easy to see and find.

need a secondary area of storage to put away the items you don’t need for six months (under the bed, another wardrobe) You want to have a wardrobe that works for the six months you are in and so can wear all the items and also see what to wear with what without the annoyance of an item which is not suitable for the season. If your weight fluctuates only have the items that actually fit you. Store the items that don’t fit away and only bring them out when they do fit. Your wardrobe is a collection of products. Categorise all dresses together, skirts together, shoes together. Let’s take dresses to start with. Take them all out. Try them on and put into 3 piles of keep, dispose or maybe. Ask yourself lots of questions about

Resell, Repurpose, Dispose As you know too many unwanted clothes end up in landfill. I’m passionate about disposing ethically, reselling or repurposing. You can resell. There are dress agencies around or you can sell on Ebay , My Wardrobe HQ ,Thrift +, Vinted or Re-fashion. Return to Retailers eg John Lewis, M&S, Bentalls and H&M all have ways to return unwanted goods. Have a look at their websites. Charity is another option. Local charities such as Refuge, Shelter and The Heart Foundation will take your unwanted items. Or maybe just give to a friend who has always loved it. Legal Matters Solicitor Nicola Dudley on deciding what to do with your digital assets

H

aving no doubt read last issue’s article encouraging you to make your Will you are all fired up to do just that! Even if you already have a Will you may need to give further thought to what would happen to your digital assets when you die or if you lost mental capacity. A survey commissioned by the Law Society in June 2020 revealed that nearly three quarters of those surveyed didn't know what would happen to their digital assets in these circumstances. Digital assets include those with a financial value such as PayPal accounts, online gaming accounts, bitcoin, popular domain names or online businesses or purely sentimental value such as photographs or emails stored on a smartphone, flash drive, online photo sharing website or cloud storage. Not being able to realize assets when they are needed could be expensive and the emotional impact of not being able to access treasured photographs following the death of a loved one could be devastating. There may be private information that you would not want shared among the family, email or Facebook accounts could reveal a relationship or interests you would not want made public. If no one were monitoring the use of your digital assets it would be easier for thieves to steal your identity. To protect yourself you should: • Prepare an inventory of your digital assets and their location on each item of your computer hardware (ipad, phone, laptop etc) • List the computer programs used, how to access them and what should be done with the information eg. advise that some information can be deleted, maybe photographs distributed to certain family members, Facebook

10

page changed to “in memorium” after death etc • Provide instructions as to how to access the digital assets, for example how to reset a password (would it involve a text sent to a smartphone that may itself be locked?) • Keep a secure record of passwords and login details, either physically or by using a Password Manager as an electronic master key (check with the service provider that this can be shared) • Specifically authorise someone to be able to access your digital assets, in writing, ideally via a Lasting Power of Attorney Next steps? Tadworth's Litter Pickers Spread a Little Love On Valentine’s Day

F

or Valentine’s Day this year, a Surrey litter picking group decided there was no better place to spread a little of love than in their own local community. During a period of just two weeks, the dedicated band of regular volunteers from Tadworth, Kingswood, Walton & Burgh Heath set about collecting 1000 empty drinks cans, items the group rather too regularly find strewn across its neighbourhood. A plan was hatched to create a temporary giant piece of litter art in the shape of a heart and display it on Valentine's Day in the centre of Tadworth's main roundabout in Surrey, which links the five villages. The project highlights the terrible and increasing problem caused by some people who refuse to bin their litter or take it home and instead choose to mindlessly discard it in public places, not just in their own locality but all over the country. The drinks cans used for the Valentine’s Day collage have now been removed and donated to Banstead’s The Beacon School Friends Association Charity in association with Tadworth Terracycle to kick start a new litter awareness and recycling project at Surrey senior school,The Beacon. It will be launched as soon as the students return to school. On 14th February, Banstead’s popular singer songwriter and Beacon School parent, Michael Armstrong dropped by to pose for photos with the newly created giant heart on the roundabout. He is supporting the litter awareness initiative by way of a self-penned new single release entitled ‘Matters of Heart’, which will be released on 5th March. www.michaelarmstrongmusic.co.uk. The @CleanUpTadworth litter picking group was founded by Kingswood

14

resident Alison Godden in August 2020 after noticing a big rise in litter during the first lockdown. Following a local social media shout out, volunteer numbers very quickly expanded. The group is a resounding success and there are now nearly 400 Facebook group members and 50 regular litter pickers who keep the five villages of Tadworth, Kingswood, Lower Kingswood, Walton on the Hill & Burgh Heath as litter free as they can. At the beginning of February, the group reached the milestone of having collected 1000 large sacks full of carelessly dropped litter from the five illages, plus all manner of fly-tipped items too. Whilst the group is thrilled with their achievement, they find it disheartening that it should be such a necessary and ongoing job. Their message is to urge people to think twice about their actions in future and to take their litter home with them if they are unable to bin it. @cleanuptadworth Fact Sheet • Along with Alison, co-founders Lisa Davies and Juliet Quartermain, also from Kingswood, plus Tadworth resident Sharon Cranfield, set about establishing an excellent social media and communications network, plus the appointment of area leaders, ensuring maximum engagement with the community, attracting many volunteers, plus reporting and combating litter hot spots. • Reigate and Banstead Borough Council has greatly supported the group from the outset, providing supplies of kit and also large purple volunteer litter picking sacks in which the litter is rounded up. The council organises collection and disposal of the full bags. • In addition to clearing tons of historical litter and keeping on top of new litter, the dynamic group of volunteers aims to create awareness of the terrible and increasing litter problem that blights the five Tadworth villages and across the UK as a whole. They are exceedingly active and effective in tackling litter hotspots with the help and support of the local councillors. • The most common carelessly discarded items collected by the group are PPE, drinks cans, plastic bottles, crisps and sweet packets and takeaway lunch packaging, often thrown from moving vehicles or carelessly dropped in the streets, roadsides and public spaces. Dog excrement tied up in bags is an ever increasing problem and one of most unpleasant ones the group tackles. Car parts and roadside junk are also retrieved, plus fly tipping identified and reported • Volunteers litter pick constantly and in all weathers to help keep on top of the never-ending litter problem. • With the rapid expansion in volunteer numbers, litter picking kit supplies of pickers, hi-vis vests, gloves and bag hoops, exacerbated by the current COVID-19 situation, were getting

in short supply. In early February, Surrey County Council & Tadworth & Walton Residents Association rewarded the group for their hard work with a very generous £1000 grant, specifically to provide much needed new litter picking kit. • In addition to Surrey County Council’s and Reigate and Banstead Borough Council’s great support, the group is also most grateful to its recent sponsors, namely Richard Saunders & Sons Estate Agents in Banstead, Epsom’s Alexandra United Football Club and Tadworth Terracycle. All have also provided much needed hi-viz vests, litter pickers, bag hoops and gloves. These have been invaluable, keeping the volunteers COVID-19 safe throughout the pandemic and well equipped for the job in hand. • The group reaches out to and supports other local communities in the fight against litter. • Volunteers are encouraged to involve their families in their own litter picking activities and the group is very proud of it’s growing band of mini-litter pickers, some as young as four years old, plus senior school Duke of Edinburgh students who litter pick in association with the group for their award assignments. CURRENT AND ON GOING PROJECTS: • Reporting of fly tipping • Reporting and clearing around overflowing bins (due to people not taking their litter and bagged dog excrement home with them to dispose of). • Tadworth Network Rail Embankment – The group has requested The clearance of the litter strewn all along the embankment perimeter and visible along the main village street and Jubilee Wood, which are conservation areas. • Preston Estate: Clearance of neglected woodland and general clear up of the area.

eat to be slim

I

Diet guru, Olivia asks if you can be both overweight and healthy

was invited onto BBC radio recently, to contribute to a hot news topic with ‘The Fat Doctor’, Dr. Natasha Larmie. She believes that ‘it’s possible to be healthy at any size’ and that you can be overweight and healthy. She has lost weight but says she doesn’t want to lose any more, even though she is a size 16. She said, ‘weight doesn’t cause diabetes’ and ‘it is a theory that excess weight brings diabetes’.

(BMI). * After just four years, those whose waists increased by 5 inches increased their risk of heart disease by 16%.

Health is not only the absence of disease but minimising the risks of getting ill in the first place. Numerous studies have been carried out which show that overweight people are at greater risk of getting cancer, heart disease and even Covid. For example, a recent study carried out at the American College of Cardiology looked at nearly 300,000 people without heart disease who were classed as either normal weight, overweight or obese based on their Body Mass Index

It is not healthy to be overweight or obese. It is a risk factor for early death. A healthy body is a slim body.

Another study published in Jama Cardiology showed that the longer you are overweight the shorter your life. It found that middle-aged men who stayed overweight shortened their lives by almost six years compared to those who maintained a normal weight.

In Dr. Natasha’s defence, I think she was trying to make the point that health should not be solely based on how much we weigh. We are a whole package of our body and our mind. How we feel has a great impact on what we eat and which lifestyle we follow. In my experience many people come to me wanting help with losing weight because they don’t understand why they can’t fix it on their own. Sometimes they do not feel very good about themselves because of a perceived failure. This is especially the case for high

Get Fit For Life!

F

PT Jade Simmons on how to stick with your fitness goals

ailed with new year goals? Build better habits to achieve those goals!

Fitness, diet, health and wellness are thrust in our face constantly. Fads change, diets change, exercise plans change and so do our lives. This leads to swapping and changing our goals which makes it hard to stick to it. Changing your behaviour is difficult but can be done.

ready by developing a ritual to make starting easier. Forming a habit doesn't come without a bit of effort early on. Start as you mean to go on and start small. Building up each day or week with exercise is a great way. Don't just focus on weight loss as this should be slow and can be a harder focusing point. Always focus on the habit first and the results later.

Find a real reason and ask why you need to change. Then set an achievable goal. Only then will you be able to stick to it.

A benefit of exercise is weight loss but it’s not the main reason. It's all about health. We all know how important health is and looking after yourself is so important.

Your reason why has to have a deep meaning. This will be the back bone of your goal and your reason to keep going.

Once you have a plan and have it in place everyday at the same sort of time it becomes routine which will then be harder to break like a habit.

Create a good habit, a habit that will help you achieve. Be armed and

the same foods each week – the same drinks and the same takeaways! This can be broken. We all know what we should do we just need a good reason why to do it. With exercise you need to look at having a plan and even if it’s only 5 minutes more than what you did before, this will all help. Little things make a big difference and once you start adding in a few things into your day it will become easier. Something simple like 30 seconds of sit to stands or squats. 30 seconds of marching on the spot. 30 seconds of walking lunges. 30 seconds of arm circles or press ups of your choice. And repeat.

Pour 2 tbsp oil into a heavy roasting tin, casserole dish or ovenproof skillet pan and tip to fully coat with the oil, then put on the middle shelf of the oven for 10 mins. Add the sausages, well spaced apart, and cook for 5-7 mins, then add the broccoli and sliced leek, and cook for another 3 mins. Mash the cheese with the 1 tbsp mustard. • STEP 3 Pour the batter over the sausages, broccoli and leeks, then scatter over most of the mustardy cheese. Cook for 15 mins before turning the oven down to 220C/200C fan/gas 7 (don’t open the oven door during this time). Sprinkle over the remaining mustardy cheese, then cook for 5-8 mins until melted, and the batter is puffed and golden brown. • STEP 4 Meanwhile, make the gravy. Fry the onion with the remaining oil for 1015 mins until lightly golden, adding a little water if they catch. Stir in the flour until it disappears, then add the vinegar and thyme. Season well. Sizzle until the vinegar evaporates, then pour in the stock and bubble uncovered for 10 mins, or until the gravy is the thickness you prefer.
