I am delighted to share several important updates from Roding Valley High School this month. Our new Year 7 and Year 12 students have settled in exceptionally well, and I want to extend my sincere gratitude to all parents and carers for your ongoing support and communication. Your involvement has made a significant difference during this time of substantial change for our young people.
I'm pleased to report that our 'new building' refurbishment is progressing ahead of schedule. We anticipate completing the work by the end of March, with a phased return planned thereafter. We will simultaneously begin removing temporary classrooms, the temporary kitchen and catering facilities, and site hoarding. We are particularly excited about finally having access to the new facilities, which will include state-of-the-art IT suites, art and photography rooms, a new kitchen, catering facilities, and enhanced maths department spaces. I will share further details with you closer to the time.
Our extra-curricular timetable is now available to view on the school website here, offering a wide range of engaging activities for our students. We have 65 free lunch and after school clubs - so please encourage your children to see what they might be interested in and which clubs they want to join.

Earlier this week around 40 students joined a residential trip to France, where they demonstrated exceptional behaviour and represented Roding Valley with true pride. It was a wonderful experience for both staff and students. Thank you to all staff who helped facilitate this trip.
Important upcoming events include our Open Day this Saturday, 27th September, and parental tours scheduled Tuesday through Thursday next week from 9:15am - 10:15am. I extend my thanks to the hundreds of student volunteers supporting these events.
In addition to this, on Saturday 4th October between 6:00pm – 9:00pm we host the inaugural Silent Outdoor Cinema. The first film that will be shown is ‘Coco’ Please join us for what promises to be a brilliant first for us at Roding!
Finally, we take immense pride in the relationships we've built within our local community. To maintain these positive connections, we have a Parent and Visitor Code of Conduct that will be shared with all parents and carers, visitors and facility users. Our commitment is to create a safe, secure environment that enables positive relationships to thrive. Please click here to read the policy.
We expect all adults to set a good example to our children, maintaining respectful interactions across all platforms - on-site, via phone, email, and social media. While the vast majority of our community upholds these standards, we want to be clear that any behaviour harmful to the welfare of staff, students, or community members is unacceptable and will be appropriately challenged in line with this policy.

It's hard to believe we're already a few weeks into the new academic year, and what a start it has been for our Year 7 students! It's so important that we build strong foundations at this stage of their secondary school journey, and I am delighted to see so many of them embracing school life and achieving great things, both in and out of the classroom.
We've had some truly remarkable individual accomplishments to celebrate. A huge congratulations to Isla R, who has been cast as Matilda in the upcoming school production! This is a fantastic achievement, and we can't wait to see her performance. The commitment and hard work she's already putting in is a real inspiration. Please see further on in this bulletin for a photo of Isla and more news about the audition process.
On the sports front, we're celebrating Francesca S, who has become the Essex champion in squash for her age group. This is a tremendous accomplishment that highlights her dedication and skill. We are so proud to have such a talented athlete in our year group.
Finally, I'd like to give a shout-out to the Year 7 boys' football team, who played their first WESSA league game against Davenant and won 4-1. They showed great teamwork and spirit, and while the result didn't go their way, they played with real heart and represented our school brilliantly. We're all excited to follow their progress this season.
It's clear that our Year 7s are already making their mark on the school community. Thank you for your continued support, and please keep me updated on any other achievements your children are making outside of school.
In England, a Free School Meal (FSM) is a statutory benefit available to school aged children from families who receive other qualifying benefits and who have been through the relevant registration process. Recently, the process of applying for Free School Meals at Roding Valley High School has changed to an online application in order to improve speed and reduce the burden of paperwork for parents. For more information on the qualifying benefits and for more information, please visit our Free School Meals page on our school website It is important that parents register their children for free school meals if they are entitled as the school receives additional funding known as the Pupil Premium to support the children’s learning. The use of the pupil premium is personalised to meet the needs of the children who are entitled to support, such as 1-1 tuition, additional LSA support and intervention groups, access to school visits, Learning Mentor, speech and language assistants, Family Support and counselling. If you believe that your child is eligible for Free School Meals, please click here to use our Free School Meals Checker. Your Certificate of Eligibility will then need to be emailed to finance@rodingvalley.net
It has been a fantastic start to the term for most of the Year 8 cohort so far. Year 8 is a vital year for developing strong learning habits. Students are now building on these foundations of last year, and beginning to explore subjects in greater depth. Your support with your child's behaviour at home is paramount in ensuring that all of the Year 8 cohort do not get behaviour points.
We have now had a fair few assemblies upon our Year 8 return. Please could I ask that you encourage your child to remain on top of their reading, and to follow our Bedrock Literacy Curriculum at home. Form Tutors, the English Department, and I will continue to oversee this. Unfortunately, if this is not supported and driven at home, students will be issued consequences by their form tutor.
We have already seen some fantastic achievements this term! Special mentions go to:
8 Neon –awarded with the highest attendance in Year 8 since returning and still remain on top!
Highest House points so far in Year 8!
1st. Christopher Jones
2nd. Ayaz Alici
3rd. Ellie Sau
4th. Salway Inayat
5th. Daniel Ban
The four 100% Attendance Wheel winners who have received queue jumpers until the end of this half term!
As always, my door is always open. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to get in touch with your child's form tutor in the first instance. Let's continue to work together to make Year 8 a happy, successful, and memorable year for every student.

I would like to take this opportunity to say a huge well done to Year 9 for making such an incredible start to the academic year. Our attendance has been fantastic, with over 200 students achieving 100% attendance so far. This is a wonderful reflection of the commitment our students are showing to their learning and the importance that this year has.
The achievement points for Year 9 have also been phenomenal. It has been a real pleasure to celebrate this success in our weekly assemblies, as well as recognising students around school for their hard work and positive contributions to our community.
We are also very proud to announce that 33 of our Year 9 students have now been appointed as Sports Leaders. They have already hosted their very first event, showing fantastic leadership and teamwork. This is a brilliant opportunity for them to develop new skills and act as role models within the school, and we are excited to see the impact they will continue to make across the year.
Finally, I would like to extend a massive thank you to all the students and parents who have supported our Open Morning. So many of our Year 9 students have volunteered their time to help, and their efforts truly do not go unnoticed. This is such an important event for our school, and we are incredibly proud of the maturity, kindness, and responsibility our students have shown in representing Year 9.
Thank you once again for your continued support and I look forward to this being a very successful year for all of our Year 9 students.
Dear Parent/Carers
If your child is late, you must ensure you call the school before 8.30am.
We understand there may be heavy traffic on the road from time to time, please allow enough time to navigate the traffic.
When a child is absent or late for school, this causes disruption to the rest of the class and causes your child to fall behind. Many thanks - Attendance team
We are now several weeks into Year 10 and the attitude and focus of students has been excellent. I am particularly impressed with a large number of students who have 100% attendance. Well-done to 10 Magnesium on having the best attendance last week! We want to encourage students that every moment matters now that the courses all work towards that all-important GCSE exam.
I hope you found the information evening helpful in what is expected in the coming year. Please do take time to watch over it, as this does give all the information needed.
We always take time to celebrate student achievement outside of school. A big congratulations to Tristan Sutton who became the Essex county champion for under 15s squash. A great achievement- well done!
Congratulations to the following students who had the most achievement points in their form last week
10Ar – Enoch Adigon

Over the past two weeks we have been handing out awards for 100% attendance and for
House Points. Most students have their names added to a random name selector. On Friday I was able to hand out 10 queue jump passes. I am looking forward to handing out more over the rest of the half term.
Students of the fortnight are: Evie Twyford and Andrea Erhardt for "excellent work in Biology, using the independent practice functionality on Sparx to prepare for their upcoming PPEs. “I haven't even told them how to use this, so I'm really impressed!" - Ms Hodges

On Thursday 18th September, Cambridge University came to visit Roding Valley High School. Students in Year 11 and Year 12 heard first-hand from current students at Cambridge what it is like to study there, the courses and the entry requirements as well as the vast range of societies available.
Yesterday I had the incredible opportunity to attend The Politics Project's new 'At The Table Toolkit' Launch at City Hall, during London Voter Registration Week in my capacity as a Youth Consultation Panellist at the Jack Petchey Foundation. The event featured a super insightful panel discussion and Q&A, with so much incredible constructive dialogue about young people's democratic and political participation!
In order to educate the disengaged young people who think; "why would I care about politics, why would I vote?" It isn't enough just to stress the importance of engaging in politics, we must make political education fun, relatable and targeted, to the extent of gamifying it.
As someone who's always been inclined to politics and democratic engagement, I hadn't truly opened my eyes as to the extent to which this approach is needed for the most disengaged and in need, and The Politics Project have done just that, considering the disposition of some of the most disengaged and targeting them with gamified and relatable education.
Furthermore, I got to talk to so many phenomenal changemakers working every day to educate young people, ensuring that they make informed decisions from voting to consuming social media content! Namely, Matteo Bergamini MBE and I had a great chat about how Shout Out UK is pioneering initiatives in political and media literacy, paving the way for organisations I work with, such as FlippGen, to build on their amazing work – Kaz Chu Foon

It was an incredible turnout at the Auditions for Matilda! Almost 100 students from Years 7 to 11 have joined the cast, with many aiming for speaking and singing roles. With a big cohort of sixth formers signed up to support and run the production, that's 115 students currently involved, and that doesn't yet include the multitude of students who have asked to help backstage! That's our biggest turn out for school production, and it means we are sure to have an exciting rehearsal period ahead.
Having so many sign up meant that the production team and the drama teachers had a very difficult job of slotting people into named roles. Congratulations to Isla R in Year 7, who will be taking on the title role of the production. The standard at auditions was very high and we could have cast it three times over; but whether you have a named role, you're in the ensemble, you're painting the scenery or working the lights, everyone is a vital cog in the Matilda machine. And with such a big cast tickets are sure to sell fast, so get yours from ParentPay now!
Massive congratulations to Alfie E (Year 9) who has secured a role in the ensemble in Matilda the Musical at the Cambridge Theatre, London! Alfie has been a committed member of Team Drama since Year 7, playing Michael Banks in Mary Poppins and also appeared in our production of The Wizard of Oz. Amazing to think that, while we are staging Matilda here at RVHS, he’ll be on stage in the West End in the real thing!! Well done Alfie
Messy Science is a very nice club where you do loads of fun science experiments!!!
In our first session, we made Elephant’s Toothpaste! First, we got into pairs and sat down at a lab table, and we did the DIN (do it now), which was about how animals brush their teeth. Then Miss Ali demonstrated how to make Elephant’s Toothpaste, and then we did it in our pairs, and it was really fun!
How we made Elephant Toothpaste:
1) We added some Fairy liquid to our measuring cylinders
2) Then we added some water and mixed
3) Next we added some yeast and then mixed it again
4) Then we put a couple of drops of food colouring into our mix and then we mixed it again
5) Next we added a spoonful of potassium iodide to our mix, then we mixed it again
6) Then we added 30% of Hydrogen peroxide to our mix, and then we mixed it quickly
7) Finally, we wait (this part took 5-10 seconds)
8) Then it exploded! A realistic type of Toothpaste! It was so creamy and foamy it looked really nice!
At the end of the session, we went outside and did one big one on the playground!
It was really fun and I really enjoyed it!
Paula Adiaconitei, 7AR

The great success of the French school trip to Boulogne-Sur-Mer, France 21st -22nd September 2025
I am delighted to share the wonderful success of our recent school trip to Boulogne-Sur-Mer, France, which took place last Sunday and Monday. Our students from Years 8, 9, and 10 represented the school with enthusiasm, curiosity, and impeccable behaviour throughout the visit.
On Sunday, the students explored the renowned Nausicaa Aquarium, where they were captivated by the incredible marine life and interactive exhibits. Monday brought a hands-on cultural experience as students rolled up their sleeves in a traditional French bakery, learning to make authentic bread and croissants an activity that was as educational as it was delicious!
Beyond the scheduled activities, it was heartening to see our students confidently practising their French, engaging with local people, and embracing the opportunity to discover a different culture. Their willingness to step out of their comfort zones and immerse themselves in the language and customs of France was truly commendable.
We are incredibly proud of how our students conducted themselves and grateful for the support from parents, carers, and teachers in making this enriching experience possible. Trips like these not only enhance language learning but also foster independence, teamwork, and global awareness.
Mrs K Lasfer (Languages teacher and Trip Leader)
On Friday last week we took 33 sports leaders to Epping Upper Clapton Rugby Club for a Year 3 & 4 Tag Rugby festival. The festival had over 300 students from a variety of different primary schools. Throughout the day I had parents and primary school teachers alike commenting on how fantastic it was to see smiles they were putting on young children's faces and the professionalism each individual showed on the day is a credit to all of them. They showed positive energy and encouraging attitude made a real impact, creating a fun and supportive atmosphere for everyone involved. It was clear that they were not only teaching them tag rugby skills but also showing them the joy of participation and teamwork.
Mr Claydon - PE
If your child is unable to attend School for any reason, please report their absence by phoning the school number by 8.30am at the latest, you must also ring in each day of your child’s absence.
On their return to School, please ensure your child brings with them a letter or medical evidence if requested explaining the reason for the absence for our records.
Please make sure you make any medical or dental appointments outside of school time. If this is not possible then please try to ensure that your child attends before and/or after their appointment.
The school does not authorise any holidays during term time except if the Headteacher deems it an exceptional circumstance. A ‘Leave of Absence’ form must be completed (these are available at Student Reception) detailing your exceptional circumstances.
Please be aware if the absence is not authorised and the holiday is taken, the case will be referred to the Local Authority who may issue a Penalty Notice for £160 (or £80 if paid within 21 days) to each parent for each child taken out of school.
For full details regarding attendance, please see our Attendance Policy here.
Should you have any concerns about your child’s attendance or punctuality please contact your child’s Head of Year or our Attendance Officer Ms A Parsley (aparsley@rodingvalley.net)
Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app. 1
Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.
Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.
Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.
Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.
Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.
Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.
Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor. 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
