Message from the Headteacher

Dear Roding Valley High School Community

I hope that you have had a great summer and are enjoying the final few weeks of sun before autumn arrives. I am delighted to welcome our entire school community back for what promises to be an exceptional academic year. We have had a particularly busy start, welcoming our new Year 7 and Year 12 students who have settled in remarkably well. They started a day earlier than the rest of the school as part of their induction and we are delighted with the way in which they have settled in, building new friendships with each other and getting to know their teachers. Each year group has now participated in welcome back assemblies with myself and their respective Head of Year, providing an excellent opportunity to establish expectations and celebrate the year ahead.

I am pleased to report that we have welcomed a small number of new staff members to our school. They have now met their classes and have already spoken incredibly highly of our brilliant students. All new staff are enrolled into our induction programme and will continue to be supported by the faculty leads as the year continues.

Our summer examination results have been truly exceptional and deserve particular recognition. Our GCSE results showed significantly improved performance across all measures and subjects. In terms of both progress and attainment, we are delighted that our students have performed so well, which is testament to their hard work and the commitment of our teachers and staff. It is difficult to single out one subject over another as all performed incredibly well. These outstanding results have enabled us to enrol a record number of Year 12 students.

Our A Level results have been equally impressive, improving for the second consecutive year. Almost 12% per cent of grades awarded at A*, 32% of grades awarded at A*- A, and an incredible 62.5% of grades awarded at A*- B. A quarter of all vocational grades were awarded at distinction*, the highest possible grade. Results for the Extended Project Qualification were also exceptional, with 83% of grades awarded at A*- A.

Looking ahead, I am excited to announce that Matilda auditions have generated tremendous enthusiasm, with 63 Year 7 and 8 students already auditioning for roles- a record number! Further details about this year’s production will be shared with you later in the year.

Several important dates require your attention. The extra-curricular timetable for 2025-26 can be found here, with all 61 lunchtime and after-school clubs beginning on Monday 15TH September. These are all free of charge, and I encourage every student to participate.

Year 7 Meet the Tutor takes place on Thursday 18TH September, with online information evenings for Years 8-11 from 5:00pm on Monday 15th September. Please note that school will finish early at 1.20pm on Friday 26th September due to our Open Morning on Saturday 27th September. We have numerous student volunteers participating, so please watch for permission letters. Parental tours will commence during the week of Monday 29th September.

Please join us for the RVHS Foundation's inaugural Silent Outdoor Cinema event on Saturday 4 October, featuring 'Coco' –further details are available on our website.

Finally, Roding Valley High School has relaunched its media service to provide a regular flow of news updates from the school. The media service is provided by Everything Local News, part of the Everything Epping Forest local news and information service. Media updates are sent to the local / regional media (newspapers, community magazines, television and radio outlets) and are also featured on the Everything Epping Forest and Everything Local News social media feeds. Year 7 News

Message from Mr John

We're excited to welcome our new Year 7 students and their families to the Roding Valley community! This year marks the beginning of their secondary school journey, and we can't wait to see their talent and potential.

We believe this is a crucial time for laying the foundations for a successful future. For every achievement point and correct decision our Year 7 students make, they are placing a brick down in the foundation of their house. The more bricks they put down, the bigger their foundation and in turn the bigger the house they will have come the end of Year 11. Over 95% of Year 7 have gained Achievement points already in the first few days of term which is fantastic. Keep up the good work!!

I look forward to seeing you at the Meet the Tutors evening on 18th September 5:00pm - 6:30pm. This is an opportunity to speak to your child’s tutor and ask any questions you would like answered. Remember, your child’s form tutor is the first point of contact for any questions or issues, please see below for contact details.

In England, a Free School Meal (FSM) is a statutory benefit available to school aged children from families who receive other qualifying benefits and who have been through the relevant registration process. Recently, the process of applying for Free School Meals at Roding Valley High School has changed to an online application in order to improve speed and reduce the burden of paperwork for parents. For more information on the qualifying benefits and for more information, please visit our Free School Meals page on our school website

It is important that parents register their children for free school meals if they are entitled as the school receives additional funding known as the Pupil Premium to support the children’s learning. The use of the pupil premium is personalised to meet the needs of the children who are entitled to support, such as 1-1 tuition, additional LSA support and intervention groups, access to school visits, Learning Mentor, speech and language assistants, Family Support and counselling. If you believe that your child is eligible for Free School Meals, please click here to use our Free School Meals Checker. Your Certificate of Eligibility will then need to be emailed to finance@rodingvalley.net

Message Miss Aston Year 8 News

Welcome Back Year 8!

I hope that you all had a well-rested, and very enjoyable Summer break. It's so great to see you all back, and so ready for the year ahead. Year 8 is a very important year - it's your chance to build on everything you have achieved in Year 7, and to continue both academically and personally.

We have now had two very important and positive assemblies since our return regarding Routines, Attendance, Expectations and Behaviour. I would really like to drive positivity this year, and have a big push on behaviour, whilst maintaining those high expectations with being rewarded House Points. As well as this, I would like to maintain high expectations with Uniform. This should be worn correctly and with pride every day.

Furthermore, let's all aim for 100% Attendance. As mentioned in these assemblies, you and your form will be rewarded for this 100% Attendance through weekly queue jumper incentives at lunchtime, cakes and juice parties, and trips out towards the end of term.

Please remember that form tutors are the first point of contact. I would like to take the time to welcome Miss Andrade to the Year 8 Team for Beryllium, and to Mrs Bates who has joined 8 Fluorine:

Year 9 News

Message from Miss Burke

I hope you have all had a restful and enjoyable summer break. As we begin the new academic year, I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome our students back and share some key messages about the exciting and important journey that lies ahead in Year 9.

Year 9 is a pivotal year in your child’s school career. Over the coming months there will be significant discussions around GCSEs and the option choices students will be making later in the year. These decisions will begin to shape the path your child takes as they progress into Key Stage 4 and beyond, so it is essential that they approach this year with focus, ambition, and a commitment to their learning.

This particular Year 9 cohort is one of whom I am incredibly proud of. We finished Year 8 on such a positive note, with momentum, effort, and real team spirit, and I am keen to carry that energy forward into this year. The year group is full of unique characters, strong personalities, and an energy that makes them a pleasure to work with. They are intelligent, sporty, creative, and well-rounded individuals who contribute so much to our school community. We will continue to support, guide and challenge them so that every student can thrive.

We are also thrilled to offer a range of exciting school trips and enrichment opportunities this year. Our netball team will be heading to Marbella on tour in October, and in April, a large group of Year 9 students will travel to the French Alps for their ski trip. Alongside these, we will be organising a number of additional trips and rewards based on progress, achievement, and attendance. These experiences are an important part of school life, and your continued support at home plays a huge role in helping us provide these valuable opportunities for our students.

A reminder that uniform must be worn correctly and in line with our school policy at all times. With important content being covered throughout the year, consistent attendance will give your child the best chance of achieving success and feeling confident when it comes to choosing their options.

Year 9 is such an exciting time of growth and opportunity. I look forward to seeing how each student rises to the challenges ahead and I know they will. Together, with your support, we can ensure that this year is both successful and memorable.

Our Year 9 mantra will of course remain the same, and we will continue to refer back to it as and when needed:

“In a world where you can be anything, be kind.”

Here’s to a positive and successful year ahead.

Message from Ms Wills Year 10 News

I hope that you all had a lovely summer and enjoyed the long run of good weather.

It has been a pleasure to see Year 10 return in correct uniform and ready to learn. I have had lots of students tell me how keen they are to do well in their subjects this year, as well as take part in the leadership opportunities on offer.

Year 10 is a key year in your child’s school career as students continue with their GCSE courses and begin to think about the next steps beyond their final exams. At the end of the year there will be the first round of PPEs as well as careers week. This will give you a good indication as to where your child is in regards to their progress and allow them to consider their progression post 16. It is essential that they approach this year with focus, ambition, and a commitment to their learning. Below is an image outlining the key dates over the next year as we journey together to make this year successful.

There will be a virtual information held the week beginning of 15th September. This will be available to view via You Tube and a link will be sent to you. In anticipation of this we would like to address any questions parents have regarding the upcoming year

One of the things we will be continuing to promote this year is the love of reading, as literacy underpins success both academically and as students’ progress into their future education and employment. As a result, Year 10 students will be expected to have a reading book every Tuesday morning and will read for 20 minutes during tutor time. Please can you ensure that your child is prepared for this and also engage with them about what they are reading.

Attendance is another key focus this year. Every day matters, and every hour counts. With important content being covered throughout the year, consistent attendance will give your child the best chance of achieving success and feeling confident as they prepare for their GCSE exams.

Finally, well done to the following students on gaining the most house points in this first week back!

Year 11 News

Message from Mr Ryan

Hello and welcome back to a new year and new term, it really is hard to believe that we are finally in Year 11 and the GCSE's are just around the corner! I know it is quite cliché' but it really has flown by. What I would really like to emphasise is how well the year group has started this important year. They have matured and are really focussed. The amount of positive feedback I have received is phenomenal. I would like this to continue in order for the

children to achieve their maximum potential.

In our assemblies over the past two weeks I have explained to the year group what the expectations are. It is imperative that they are in school and ready to learn. They need to be in their lessons on time every day. If they are not, they will receive a 20-minute detention that day. They will need to be in full, correct uniform and have all their necessary equipment, ready to learn.

Below are some significant dates for your diaries.

• Year 11 Parents Evening – 16th October 2025

• PPE1 – week commencing 10th November 2025

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app. 1

Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.

Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.

Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.

Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.

Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.

Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.

Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor. 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

Support your child with Thinkuknow websites

The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.

 11-13yrs Thinkuknow website: https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/11_13/

 14yrs + Thinkuknow website – https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/14_plus/

Our websites provide open and honest guidance for young people on friends, relationships and the internet, covering topics like dealing with pressure; consent; and getting support when you are worried.

You will find lots more advice on keeping your child safe online at www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents.

If you are worried that a child or young person is at risk of harm online, you should call the police. Young people can make a report to CEOP at https://www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/
