Message from the Headteacher

Dear Parents/ Carers

Exam season is upon us and I want to wish all students who are taking public examinations the very best during this period. We know how hard our students have been working and we would also like to thank parents/carers for their support. If you have any questions or queries, please contact your child’s Academic Mentor or YPL who will be able to guide and support you.

We wanted to take this opportunity to re-share two very important letters that were shared with parents of year 11 & parents of year 13. These letters contain all of the information needed during the exam period and beyond. You will find all of the May half term sessions on offer and a link to our student examination handbook.

It’s not just our Year 11 and 13 cohorts that have been busy preparing for examinations. Our Year 12 cohort are in the midst of their ‘Progression PPEs’ and this week have been studying hard at home. We also have a small number of year 12 students sitting public examinations and of course we wish them the very best. We look forward to welcoming them back to school full time from Monday, where they will be in timetabled lessons apart from when they’re sitting an exam. These PPEs will be incredibly useful for our students to get a full understanding of how well they have progressed and what gaps they need to close as they embark on their final year in our 6th form.

Our Year 10s have also been busy revising and preparing for their upcoming examinations. Their exams begin w/c 17th June and Ms Wills will be writing to all parents/ carers very soon about how to prepare at home and what the examination arrangements will be. In the meantime, I know that our teachers are busy navigating the students and ensuring that they are ready to go next month.

The summer term is also about opportunities outside of the classroom. I was so happy to see so many of our Year 10 students depart for their Duke of Edinburgh silver expedition led by Mr Naidoo and Ms Preston. This is an absolutely incredible experience and I know that many more of our students will be heading out next week for their Bronze practice event. We are looking forward to sharing pictures and stories in our next newsletter.

In recent weeks I have met with several local businesses, residents and organisations to talk about student safety outside of school. As a staff we regularly patrol bus stops, local shops and the area surrounding the school site at the beginning and end of each day. I have also spoken with the police and British Transport Police about increasing visibility in these areas at these times, particularly as we move into the summer and the weather becomes more favourable. Please encourage your children to plan their journey each day, and to ensure that they travel straight home at the end of the day.

We have seen a much needed and long-awaited improvement in the weather over the last week and as temperatures increase we will allow students to move to a ‘summer uniform’. This will be communicated to students on a day to day basis by Academic Mentors based on the temperature but please remind your child to continue to attend school with their full uniform.

Finally, w/c 13th May, we are observing mental health week and the focus on MOVEMENT where we will be setting students a Mental Health Movement challenge each day. Here is the link if parents/ carers and students would like to take a look at more information Mental Health Week

Thank you, as always, for your continued support.

Year 7 News

Message from Ms Hegerty

It was fantastic to see so many Year 7 parents and carers at Parents Evening last week to receive face to face feedback from teachers! There was a lovely buzz around the school throughout the evening and it was non-stop from 3:30-7.00pm!

If you did not manage to speak to teachers or have any more things you’d like to discuss with them regarding your child's progress, please contact them directly via email. Please see below the link to our staff contact details: https://rodingvalley.net/about/school-staff/

Please bear in mind that our Academic Mentors should be your first point of contact if you have any questions or concerns with your child in school. Please see the list below of our Year 7 team of Academic Mentors:

Please can Year 7 ensure that they are fully prepared for learning with all the equipment they need for lessons and they always have a reading book with them for DEAR time. We are still limited with the catering facilities we have available at RVHS so we do encourage all students that are able to, to bring a packed lunch to avoid lengthy queues at break and lunchtimes (Year 7 are still able to purchase food in Zone 3 at these times).

Can I take this opportunity to remind students, parents and carers that RVHS uniform expectations must be adhered to and students will only be given uniform cards for missing items (i.e. shoes) in exceptional circumstances. In addition to this, can I remind parents and careers that toilet cards will only be given when medical evidence is provided to your son or daughter's Year Progress Leader.

Finally, a huge congratulations to Yusuf H from 7 Platinum who is the winner of the Engagement Award for the Shakespeare Celebration that our English Department organised on the 23rd April. Yusuf threw himself into the day's workshops and presentations and made a real impression on staff for his positive attitude to learning, subject knowledge and cooperation with his peers - well done Yusuf!

Year 8 News Message from Miss Reed

I trust everyone had a lovely Bank Holiday weekend. The sun is finally shining and I am looking forward to the remaining two weeks of this half term.

A reminder that students need to be fully prepared for learning with all the equipment they need for lessons and ensure they always have a reading book with them for DEAR time.

We are still limited with the catering facilities so we do encourage all students that are able to, to bring a packed lunch to avoid lengthy queues at break and lunchtimes.

I would like to remind students, parents and carers that RVHS uniform expectations must be adhered to and students will only be given uniform cards for missing items (i.e. shoes) in exceptional circumstances. This includes skirts being worn below the knee, top buttons done up and blazers being worn.

Over the next two weeks, students will be sitting some in class assessments within some subjects. Subject areas and class teachers will inform their class of topics that will be covered. I would like to encourage students to ensure they revise for these assessments so we have a clear indication of the progress they are making, if you have any subject specific questions, please contact your son/daughter's class teacher.

Miss Reed

In England, a Free School Meal (FSM) is a statutory benefit available to school aged children from families who receive other qualifying benefits and who have been through the relevant registration process. Recently, the process of applying for Free School Meals at Roding Valley High School has changed to an online application in order to improve speed and reduce the burden of paperwork for parents. For more information on the qualifying benefits and for more information, please visit our Free School Meals page on our school website It is important that parents register their children for free school meals if they are entitled as the school receives additional funding known as the Pupil Premium to support the children’s learning. The use of the pupil premium is personalised to meet the needs of the children who are entitled to support, such as 1-1 tuition, additional LSA support and intervention groups, access to school visits, Learning Mentor, speech and language assistants, Family Support and counselling. If you believe that your child is eligible for Free School Meals, please click here to use our Free School Meals Checker. Your Certificate of Eligibility will then need to be emailed to finance@rodingvalley.net

Year 9 News

Message from Mr Ryan

We are finally getting to the end of the options process and timetables for after half term are being finalised. I hope that everyone is ready to start their GCSE courses. I have to admit that I am so impressed by the level of maturity that has been shown by the year group during this whole process. If there are any concerns over this, please don't hesitate to let me know and I will see what I can do to help.

The DofE process is underway with students preparing to go on their first excursion. All information and advice about this has been shared by Mr Naidoo.

Bedrock, as always, I like to champion the students who do well in Bedrock. The reason for this is because it is such an amazing tool for building literacy skills. A student who got 100% in their A level English Lit exams, claimed that this was due to her completing Bedrock. I would like everyone in the year group to complete a minimum of 40 minutes a week. I have asked Academic Mentors to push this and we really do rely on your support with this. The Bedrock Champions for the last two weeks are Maisie P and Ignas V.

I would also like to congratulate Oliver W for representing England in Badminton. The England team won gold for the team competition and he also won gold for the doubles with a bronze in the single event.

LOST PROPERTY

To report any property lost, please email: lostproperty@rodingvalley.net

We ask if you could provide a detailed description of the item you have lost so that we can reunite you with your missing property.

Message from Ms Wills Year 10 News

It has been an incredibly successful few weeks for our Year 10 students!

I am really pleased to announce that the football team were successful in winning the district cup. It was a very tight game, going down to penalties. Congratulations to Cash B on being named Man of the Match.

Well done to Mia W on her speech at the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge district final. She represented the school really well and did us all proud.

Year 10 were also treated to a production of Macbeth last week, which is the text they are studying for their GCSE’s. Thank you to Mrs Routledge and the English Department for organising to bring this text to life.

Finally, a group of 30 Year 10 students have taken part in their first Silver Duke of Edinburgh expedition to the New Forest. I am sure they will be full of stories of adventure!

As Year 11 move into their final GCSE exams, we are now really focusing on preparing Year 10 successfully for this time next year. Mr Miah and I have launched the RVHS Route to Success and the milestones along the way which they need to be aware of. Exams will begin on the 17th June and we will be writing to you soon with further details.

We will be holding a revision workshop before half term, to give students the tools in order to best prepare for these PPEs.

Students are also in the final stages of writing up their CVs and these should be brought in after half term. A reminder about the Take Your Child to Work day letter here. Please can the form be filled in with details as soon as possible.

On Thursday 18th of April, students of the Chelsea FC Foundation sixth form team and YR12 CTEC sports students were asked to go to Cobham in order to take part in some coaching sessions lead by Thiago Silva, Marc Cucurella and Marcus Bettinelli.

Once the session began, the students took part in the session where they got to learn from experienced international and premier league players. Thiago Silva and Marc Cucurella passed their knowledge onto the outfield players, while Marcus Bettinelli coached the goalkeepers.

It was a day to remember for all involved and the students were lucky enough to speak to the players after the session and grab some photos.

The past two weeks at Science and Medicine Society have been particularly exciting. Own very own St John's Ambulance volunteer, AJ, held two first aid sessions to teach everyone about the essential DR ABC acronym, as well as the recovery position, CPR, and proper use of bandages. Everyone got really involved and found the sessions extremely valuable, as you never know when you might need to use first aid.

If you're interested in fun and engaging sessions like these, come along to S2 at 3.00pm on Fridays, where Science and Medicine Society also hosts exciting experiments, medical debates, and interactive lessons.

Year 11 Football

The Year 11 Football team finished off their final school league campaign by winning the West Essex League and qualified for the West Essex and Harlow District Final against Passmores. After a pulsating first half of end to end football the game unfortunately finished in a 4-2 defeat for the Year 11's. Goals: Tye H and Brandon D

Reaching this final was a fantastic effort from all the students involved and they should be proud that in their final year of representing the school in District football they won the league and gave everything to win the District final. With a number of the boys moving on to academy football next year and to those students still enjoying their football locally the PE Department would like to wish them all the best and thank you for your efforts in representing the school over the past 5 years.

Year 10 football

The Year 10 football team once again finished off with an unbeaten league campaign winning all four games. This meant they had the opportunity to become back to back West Essex and Harlow District champions after successfully winning the Year District final last year.

With a number of the season's successful squad out injured or unable to play due to academy commitments the team faced off against Burnt Mill in the final at Debden Park, watched on by a travelling Year 10 student support of 20 students who did not stop singing and cheering on the team all game.

After conceding an early goal, Roding dominated the first half and carved out numerous opportunities at goal only for the Burnt Mill keeper or the woodwork keeping Roding from scoring. Finally, a Cash B freekick brought Roding back level as they went into the half time break. A change of personnel and positions from both teams at half time evened out the game but Jake B increased Roding's lead half way through the second half. Both teams continued to create chances for the remainder of the half but it was Burnt Mill on the counter attack who scored their second which took the game to extra time.

Extra time started and Roding came out determined to win the game, dominating the first half without scoring that elusive 3rd goal. With 2 minutes remaining of the second half of extra time, some great work in midfield and pressure from Charlie M lead to an own goal from a Burnt Mill player to put Roding ahead with now only a minute to play. From kick off Roding won the ball back but then lost it just inside their own half before giving away a foul. From the resulting freekick Burnt Mill scored their equaliser and the final whistle blew.

Penalties ensued, with Roding scoring all 5 of their penalties with confidence, a solitary miss by Burnt Mill meant that the Year 10 team once again won the West Essex and Harlow District final, 5-4 on penalties after a 3-3 draw.

Goals: Cash B, Jake B

Penalties: Dexter, Kevin, Cash, Jaden, Jake.

A huge well done to all the boys who represented the Year 10 football team this season and to those who played in this thrilling cup final.

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app. 1

Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.

Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.

Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.

Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.

Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.

Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.

Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor. 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

Support your child with Thinkuknow websites

The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.

 11-13yrs Thinkuknow website: https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/11_13/

 14yrs + Thinkuknow website – https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/14_plus/

Our websites provide open and honest guidance for young people on friends, relationships and the internet, covering topics like dealing with pressure; consent; and getting support when you are worried.

You will find lots more advice on keeping your child safe online at www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents.

If you are worried that a child or young person is at risk of harm online, you should call the police. Young people can make a report to CEOP at https://www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/
