Message from the Headteacher

Dear Parents/ Carers

What a busy couple of weeks we have had at Roding Valley High School! This week we enjoyed celebrating the National World Book Day! Our staff really got into the spirit, with many of them dressing up as their favourite fictional characters. Please see the photo below; my personal favourite was Ms Wills as Katniss

Everdeen! It hasn’t just been about World Book Day, we have also held our first ‘Fusion’ event in school. ‘Fusion’, organised by Mr Melvin and a group of very committed sixth formers, is all about celebrating multiculturalism in our school. Thank you to all parents that have supported this, too.

4th 1040pts

5th 925pts

Thank you to those parents, carers and students that attended the annual ‘Careers Fest’ at New City College. Mrs Mason, our fantastic Careers Advisor, was so impressed with the large number of RVHS students that she saw networking and gaining more careers information at the festival.

There have been enrichment opportunities in abundance this week. A number of our Year 10 students also took part in the Jack Petchey ‘Speak Out’ Challenge. This involves students being trained on how to speak confidently in public. Mrs Patel, one of our challenge and enrichment leaders, was so impressed with the standards of speeches; we cannot wait to see how we progress during the regional final; watch this space!

I also wanted to take this opportunity to remind all parents and carers about our continued drive on excellent punctuality and attendance. As you are aware, we have now built in a lesson transition period and a ‘late bell’, so that students are fully aware of what constitutes being ‘late’. As a team, we have noticed a massive change in how our students are valuing the start of their lessons and how they are moving around our building with purpose. We are now focussing on working with the small number of students that are not currently meeting those high

0pts pts 0pts 0pts 0pts

expectations to ensure that they are supported and challenged. Both teachers and students have commented on the reduction in lesson interruptions due to clarity around these procedures which has meant an increase in teaching time.

Unfortunately, we are still to hear back from the DfE regarding our proposal for a new temporary kitchen and catering facility to go onto our main playground. Staff at Roding Valley and CLP Trust are working hard to try and get a viable resolution as soon as possible.

As you are aware, we are now approaching that crucial public examination period with our Year 11 and 13 cohort. Ms Pinches, YPL for Year 11, has written to all Year 11 parents with a very comprehensive timeline outlining key dates for this cohort. Please click here to view the letter. Similarly, Ms Curling has also written to Year 13 parents/carers - please click here to see it.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support.

Year 7 News

Message from Ms Hegerty

Year 7 have been celebrating World Book Day this week along with the rest of RVHS. Students have had assemblies from our English Faculty on the worldwide event and the importance of reading and literacy in our lives. Our Word of the Week has been ‘Empowered’ and students have had the message of ‘knowledge is power’ very much embedded in their Period 1 sessions through Bedrock and careers sessions. Students will have received a voucher entitling them to £1 off a book of their choice and participated in competitions to guess which books members of staff have been embodying through fancy dress!

Please can Year 7 ensure that they are fully prepared for learning with all the equipment they need for lessons and that they always have a reading book with them for DEAR time. We still are limited with the catering facilities we have available at RVHS so we do encourage all students that are able to, to bring a packed lunch to avoid lengthy queues at break and lunchtimes (Year 7 are still able to purchase food in Zone 3 at these times).

There has been some concerning behaviour during lunchtimes on our Astro in Zone 3 - students have been reminded that use of the Astro is a privilege and that if they are to use it they must do so following RVHS behaviour expectations (following staff instructions, wearing the correct footwear, not slide tackling one another and refraining from pushing and shoving).

Can I take this opportunity to remind students, parents and carers that RVHS uniform expectations must be adhered to and students will only be given uniform cards for missing items (i.e. shoes) in exceptional circumstances.

I would like to congratulate the following students – well done and thank you for being such great examples for your peers!

Year 9 News

Message from Mr Ryan

It has been another busy two weeks at Roding Valley High School with students busy trying to work out what options to pick for their GCSEs. This is really positive and quite exciting as so many students have started to think about their futures. For those students who are still unsure about what to do, I would like to point them in the direction of Mrs Mason. Mrs Mason is our fantastic Careers Advisor who has a wealth of knowledge when it comes down to future choices. It was lovely to see so many students attending the Careers Fest at New City College yesterday. The deadline for completed options is today the 8th March.

I would like to comment on how well behaved the year group were during their language assembly on Tuesday where they were spoken to about how great learning a foreign language is. Congratulations to George T and Eesa S for being our Bedrock Champions over the past two weeks. I also feel that I need to congratulate Eesa S and Ties K for standing as EFYC, I am waiting to see who the representative will be.

Congratulations are also in order for the selected students who attended the Rugby tournament earlier on in the week

As always, any concerns/issues please contact your child’s Academic Mentor in the first instance.

In England, a Free School Meal (FSM) is a statutory benefit available to school aged children from families who receive other qualifying benefits and who have been through the relevant registration process. Recently, the process of applying for Free School Meals at Roding Valley High School has changed to an online application in order to improve speed and reduce the burden of paperwork for parents. For more information on the qualifying benefits and for more information, please visit our Free School Meals page on our school website

It is important that parents register their children for free school meals if they are entitled as the school receives additional funding known as the Pupil Premium to support the children’s learning. The use of the pupil premium is personalised to meet the needs of the children who are entitled to support, such as 1-1 tuition, additional LSA support and intervention groups, access to school visits, Learning Mentor, speech and language assistants, Family Support and counselling. If you believe that your child is eligible for Free School Meals, please click here to use our Free School Meals Checker. Your Certificate of Eligibility will then need to be emailed to finance@rodingvalley.net

Year 10 News

Message from Mrs Wills

This week is National Careers Week and so it was with great pleasure that we were able to launch the careers week which will take place at the end of Year 10. In assembly Mrs Mason, our Careers Advisor, spoke with the students about the importance of preparing for the next steps in their journey. She encouraged them to think about what jobs they may want to pursue in the future and to look into new opportunities they may not have considered before We hope that many took advantage of the Careers Fest over at New City College and picked up some inspiration as well as free merchandise! I took a walk over and it was certainly a bustling event.

You will have received a letter this week about the careers week at the end of Year 10 including the Take Your Child to Work Day. This is not a formal work experience placement, but gives students the opportunity to shadow you or another family member or friend for the day and see what the working world is like. Students have till June to get this organised and complete the form. Please see the letter sent out earlier this week for more information here.

Well done to all those students who have been making every effort to attend lessons on time. It has been great to see students hurrying with enthusiasm to ensure they make it before the late bell. I have launched a reward competition with prizes every two weeks. Next week I will draw names out of hat in assembly from those students with 100% punctuality. Lucky winners will be given a queue jumper for the following week.

Year 11 News

Message from Miss Pinches

We are well and truly in the swing of our half-term, all PPE’s are now complete and students are working hard to prepare for the real deal! I wanted to share the timeline with parents for our key Year 11 events:

• Year 11 Mock Results Day - Wednesday 20th March, 2024 - Period 6

• Year 11 GCSE first official exam - Wednesday 9thMay 2024

• Year 11 Last day in school - Wednesday 15th May 2024

• Year 11 Leavers Assembly and Prom - Tuesday 25th June 2024

• Year 11 Transition to 6th form day - Tuesday 2nd July 2024

Year 11 had a virtual assembly today to discuss the above events and a detailed letter has been shared with all parents today, please check your edulink.

Staff are working incredibly hard to review the PPE data and ensure students are receiving the appropriate interventions to address any concerns prior to the GCSE summer exams. I would encourage parents to be checking their childs’ google classroom for homework and revision tasks to ensure all students are working as hard as they can.

Our recent push on whole school punctuality has been an overwhelming success. We have discussed with Year 11 specifically how essential being on time to lessons is, especially when the ‘Do It Now’ tasks are designed for content recall. I would like to remind parents that if there are any issues on the morning commute, please email admin@rodingvalley.net to alert us.

Our administrative team is also the first point of contact for parents reporting any absences or if students have appointments. We would encourage parents to make appointments outside of school hours, but if this is not possible, please contact our team to ensure we have the correct information (admin@rodingvalley.net ).

With such little time left, it is so important that we all work together to support Year 11 on the final stretch! Thank you as always for being on the TEAM!

6th Form News

Message from Mrs Curling

Thank you to all parents for their support at this crucial time of year.

As a school we have a huge drive on punctuality and attendance, as we know that every minute of learning time counts. As a reminder, students should be in their period 1 rooms by 8.30am, and on time to lessons throughout the day (ahead of the newly-introduced late bell). We are aware of ongoing issues with the central line and 66 bus from Waltham Abbey but a reminder to please encourage your students to plan ahead and set off that bit earlier. We are receiving many calls justifying lateness with excuses such as ‘traffic’, which when used on a regular basis, are not something we can consider authorised.

Thank you for your support in getting our students as much time in the classroom as possible, with only two months to go before their exams.

Another Medic

Congratulations to Dharam S who has been given an offer to study Medicine at the University of Plymouth. We now have two students with offers for Medicine and we’re very proud of them indeed.

Work experience opportunities

Our careers offering continues to provide extensive opportunities for our sixth formers to prepare for the world of work. Below are two summaries from our students, one who is interested in Law and another in the Media Industry.

‘I had the fantastic opportunity to join Young Professionals at Clifford Chance in their Canary Wharf office. We were talked through the opportunities they offer for young people looking to get into Law, we had a networking opportunity and we spoke to partners of the firm to learn about the Law life in general. Overall, it was an incredible opportunity for me to learn about the legal world!’ - Amber

‘Just wanted to say an absolute massive thank you to Young Professionals for giving me two incredible opportunities to go to both Farrer & Co and Clifford Chance for some insight into the legal profession!

I was able to attend two sessions, in which I learned about the fantastic programmes and opportunities that each firm offer as well as speak to some real lawyers!

I have learned many tips and tricks and am very excited to go forward into the legal world and attend more events with this incredible company. Once again, thank you Young Professionals!’

The podium is still close, the closest it's ever been! Rendell are still holding on to the top spot and doing a good job at doing so! With our house week next week there are plenty of opportunities to rack up some more and try and change this table.

It’s a double whammy of Year 9 winning entries for our house competition!

Both students produced magnificent final pieces of part of their ‘Pop Art’ projects, showing exceptional painting skills and understanding of elements of Pop Art and gaining 50 points each for their Houses.

Artist of the Month for January goes to Denol Ann D - Murray Artist of the Month for February goes to Molly H - Pankhurst

Yet another amazing ski-trip! February half-term was full of skiing, bowling, ice-skating and lots of great food! The kids had a great time skiing out in Andorra and cannot stop talking about another ski-trip! Well done to everyone who signed themselves up for it and gave it a good go because everyone by the end of the week made massive improvements! Keep an eye out for the next one...!

The annual Disneyland Paris run by the Maths department took place over the half term. With 63 students and 6 other staff members supporting the trip, it was expected to be an uneventful but a great trip for students. It was my sixth trip after all! Wasn’t long before I was thinking perhaps it will be my last one… The ferry ride was very choppy, you may recall the weather not being great over the half term but at least you were on solid ground! Multiple students did not have as sturdy a stomach as me and the worst did happen… I will be forever thankful to Miss Woods and Miss Bleakley for cleaning up after!

The Paris trip was very fun. There was a lot to do like roller coasters, having fun with your mates, taking lots of good photos and much more. Disneyland was so much fun. If I could, I would go back on this trip again with my friends and it would be just as fun the first time I went! –

Year 8

Just wanted to say a huge, huge thank you to the teachers for giving up your half term to take us to Disney. I had a truly magical time and I think all my friends who went share the same thought. I made some amazing memories I will never forget and also made so many new friends as well. Thank you!

I really liked the trip, it was lovely. The best memory was watching the fireworks. My favourite rides were all of them, but the best were the rollercoasters: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Peril and Avengers Assemble. A big thank you to all the teachers who went with us!

Yelyzaveta Year 8

-

In Disneyland there are many fun things like; rides, food, mascots and more! One of my favourite rides was the Tower of Terror. The best part of the park was either the Toy Story area which has a sort of ramp that goes back and forth and goes very high or the space themed area which has a roller coaster in the dark! It is true there are many burgers and chicken nuggets places but if you look hard enough, there are a variety of things to choose from like chocolate covered strawberries and marshmallows to churros which was my favourite! The mascots at Disneyland are very energetic and there are loads of them around. There was a parade and a bunch of Disney characters started dancing and singing. It was my first time going to Disneyland and one of the best experiences of my life. I definitely want to go again! - Amelie Year 8

My personal favourite memory of the trip was just walking around the main park, eating in different places and trying to go on all the rides. My favourite ride was the Tower of Terror because it was unlike any ride I’d been on. The only downside was the queues, but it was worth it. I also enjoyed the fireworks display and the projections on the castle - Georgia Year 8

The Disneyland trip was a once in a lifetime experience. I found it very enjoyable and the teachers made sure we were all safe. We got to visit the park for two days with our friends. Many of the roller coasters were so fun even the teachers had a go! The park was so fun! There was a ride everywhere you looked. On one ride called Space Mountain, I went on it six times!! It was too fun to forget! The memories I made are still in my head. It was truly an unforgettable experience, thank you!

With such glowing feedback from the students, how can I not plan the next trip for February 2025! Please keep an eye for the letters for the next trip! A massive thank you to the Mr Edeko, Miss Bleakley, Mr Vermaak, Miss Woods, Ms Thompson and Mr Perera. A trip like this is only successful with staff giving up their hard-earned holiday and all the effort they put! - Mr Rahman

A group of Year 10 students participated in the Jack Petchey Speak out workshop-where they gained confidence in public speaking. Students performed exceptionally and did themselves proud. Out of 26 students, 8 were selected as the winning speeches on topics such as divorce, nostalgia, misogyny and identity. These 8 students will then perform their speech in assembly and one will go through to the regional finals. Students are: Jack C, Melissa T , Mia W, Marilyn R, Zoe H, Polina M, , Isabelle D. Micah A and Oliver D won the award for Highly Commendable.

On Friday 1st March 2024 it was time for Roding Valley to vote for the two students who are hoping to stand for the Epping Forest Youth Council. We had a record - breaking 17 candidates who spoke to so many voters about their plans and ideas, they were brilliant and filled with energy and passion for the whole morning! We wish them the very best of luck for the results on 26th March 2024

As part of STEM club, and keeping in line with the theme for British Science Week - Time, students crafted wall-clocks out of cardboard. They developed their own designs for the clock-face and the numbers. A-level students AJ, Natalia and Emma helped with the aesthetic aspect of designing their clocks, while Laiba helped with cutting out the shapes and Xixuan guided students on assembling the gears, hands and batteries.

The students have placed the Wall-clocks in different Science classrooms, with an endeavour to not use phones in class, even to check the time, and to improve the punctuality and time-management skills of the entire class.

Rugby News

Year 7, 8 and 9 teams played in the Essex Rugby Sevens Tournaments over the past 2 weeks. These tournaments gave the teams a brilliant learning curve and an opportunity to test their rugby skills and knowledge against schools from all over Essex. Well done to all those who took part and hopefully they can learn from this experience to apply it in the West Essex Rugby festivals next winter.

Handball News

This week saw the Year 8 boys and girls’ teams and the Year 10 boys’ and girls’ teams travel to Bishops Stortford to play in the Essex & Herts England Handball Tournament. The Year 8 boys smashed it by winning their competition and qualifying for the regional tournament later in the term, whilst the Year 8 girls team put on a great showing by Winning 1 game, drawing a game and losing 2. The Year 10 boys unfortunately didn't do so well losing their games but it was a great experience for them to test their Handball skills and get some evidence for their GCSE PE course. The Year 10 team after some mixed results finished 4th overall out of 6 teams narrowly losing the 3rd and 4th place playoff in extra time 4-2, after finishing regular time at 2-2.

Overall it was a great opportunity and learning curve for all 4 teams and brilliant to allow them to play in a competitive competition in a sport they only learn in their PE lessons. Well done to all that represented.

Bocchia

A huge congratulations to the Boccia Team who earlier this term came first and second out of 15 teams. Boccia is a Paralympic sport with no Olympic equivalent and is similar to bowls. It is a target ball sport which tests both muscle control and accuracy. Well done Jack G (Y9), Sarah G (Y9), Ben K (Y7), Chloe C (Y9), Denol D (Y9) and Ruby F (Y9)

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app. 1

Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.

Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.

Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.

Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.

Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.

2 3 4 5 6 7 8

Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.

Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor.

Support your child with Thinkuknow websites

The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.

 11-13yrs Thinkuknow website: https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/11_13/

 14yrs + Thinkuknow website – https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/14_plus/

Our websites provide open and honest guidance for young people on friends, relationships and the internet, covering topics like dealing with pressure; consent; and getting support when you are worried.

You will find lots more advice on keeping your child safe online at www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents.

If you are worried that a child or young person is at risk of harm online, you should call the police. Young people can make a report to CEOP at https://www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/
