2023 Annual Report

Page 1

Our Mission

The mission of Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.

The after-school hours have become a critical time for youth – a time when many children in our communities are left to fend for themselves without positive adult supervision. We provide a safe place filled with hope and opportunity, ongoing relationships with caring adult mentors, and enriching programs.

Our Vision

Our vision is to provide a world class Club-Experience that assures success is within reach of every young person who walks through our doors, with all members on track to graduate from high school with a plan for the future and demonstrating good character and citizenship while living a healthy lifestyle.

Aloha Valued Supporters and Beloved Community,

As we reflect on 2023, I am filled with gratitude for the continued support of our donors, partners, and community members who make our mission possible. The Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii remains dedicated to providing a safe, nurturing environment where thousands of keiki and teens can discover their potential, build confidence, and create bright futures.

This year, we embraced Akahai as our guiding word—a value that goes beyond gentleness to encompass true kindness. Pilahi Pākī taught Pono Shim that Akahai means to give the best of ourselves without expectation of anything in return, and to always leave things better than we find them. As we invest in the lives of our youth, we also recognize the importance of looking inward, loving ourselves so that we can fully love others, accepting ourselves so that we can be more accepting, and practicing kindness within so that we can share it abundantly.

Through this lens, we expanded our programs to meet the growing needs of our Club members, ensuring access to academic support, career development, and mental wellness resources. We remain focused in addressing the challenges facing our communities, from food insecurity to the rise in violence, by providing solutions that empower and uplift.

None of this would be possible without you. Your generosity fuels life changing opportunities and ensures that every child who walks through our doors has the chance to succeed.

Mahalo for believing in the power of our youth and for standing alongside us in this important work. Let us continue to lead with Akahai—for ourselves, for our keiki, and for the future we are building together.

With deep appreciation and Aloha,

Youth of the Year

Today’s youth face significant challenges as they plan for their future, especially with the increasing costs of higher education. At Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii, we believe every child deserves the chance to succeed. For nearly 80 years, Youth of the Year has been the Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s premier recognition program, honoring exceptional teens aged 14-17 for their leadership, academic achievements, and commitment to their Club and community. Participants in this program embody the transformative power of the Club, showcasing how its programs inspire confident, driven young leaders who demonstrate that great futures truly begin at the Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii.

Leaders In Training

The Leaders In Training (LIT) program equips our teens with real-world leadership development through hands-on experiences that build essential skills in communication, teamwork, responsibility, and service. More than just a program, LIT empowers youth to step into leadership roles, make meaningful contributions to their communities, and grow into confident, capable young adults. Through this experience, teens gain the tools and mindset to succeed not only in the Club, but in life.

Training (LIT) PROGRAM

Five Leaders In Training (LIT) members from three Clubhouses had the incredible opportunity to attend the LIT Big Bear Summer Camp, an unforgettable experience that marked several “firsts” for our teens. For many, it was their first time traveling without their parents, and for two, it was their very first time on an airplane.

During the trip, the teens toured college campuses, sparking excitement and new aspirations. Two of the teens are now planning to pursue college away from home, and one shared a strong desire to attend the University of Redlands.

At camp, our teens stepped far outside their comfort zones taking part in skits, singing songs, and building new friendships. It was a moment of pride when, for the first time ever, our teens received camp awards: one was honored for breaking out of her shell, and another recognized as a social butterfly.

The experience was truly transformative. The teens returned to Hawaii inspired, confident, and eager to attend again next year. The trip not only created lasting memories, but it also ignited a passion for higher education and personal growth.

Mahalo TO OUR SUPPORTERS

Thousands of people, businesses, volunteers, and foundations make our work possible. Although it would be impossible to list them all in this report, we would like to acknowledge our top financial donors who made a true impact this year in the lives of our youth.
