Hello, my name is Kristen and I am a second year undergraduate student at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture. I have developed excellent project management skills and can easily collaborate with a diverse group of people, through teaching and extra curriculars. I am a strong communicator that enjoys working in a team but can also work efficiently alone.

THE LIGHT HOUSE Individual

Connection through light.

As a building for transitional youth housing, my design focuses on creating moments of connectivity between the residents. The feeling of connection is not always insinuated by physical means, for example touch or view. My design focuses on creating this feeling through light. The large stairwell acts as a beacon of light for the home, bringing uninterrupted beams of light from the third floor all the way to the first floor, which is underground. The cut outs from the thick wall separating the stairwell from the living spaces, creates a horizontal bridge through the spaces. Aside from the stairwell, there is also a horizontal connection between the three bedrooms, letting the rooms share the same source of light without infringing on each other’s privacy. Lastly, in the diagrams it is easy to see the connection between light and public space, areas that are considered public are exposed to greater amounts of light in comparison to areas that are more private.

NEW ESCAPE

Off the Grid.

This urban oasis is located on the intersection of Derry Rd and Trafalgar Rd in Milton, Ontario.

It is an adaptive re-use building that reuses the materials in situ from an abandoned residential home previously located on the site. The project reuses the brick masonry by removing the second floor and allocating the materials to create perforated brick walls for shading. Half of the facade and foundation of the previous house is preserved, with only a small addition being added to house the mechanical system. The house is designed specifically for 2 botanists, containing 2 private bedrooms, an indoor garden workspace, and an outdoor garden.

REFLECTONS PAVILLION Individual

Nature Versus Man-Made.

Located on a man-made extension along Lake Ontario, the reflection pavilion creates harmony between the natural landscape and man made materials. The pavilion is designed from stacking spheres based on a grid organization.

A screw pattern is then subtracted from the cube, to create a wave pattern on the interior of the pavilion, mimicking the pattern of erosion formed by powerful waves. The steel material reflects the surrounding scenery, allowing this large man-made object to disappear into nature.

URBAN FLOW PAVILLION

Connection to site.

In the heart of Mississauga The Urban Flow Canopy brings life to a neglected space along Princess Royal Drive. The Canopy’s form takes inspiration from the urban fabric of Mississauga and the tapogrophy of the surrounding site.

The canopy provides a social and resting space for the community.

THE NEST Individual

A Warm Hug. The Nest is a public library that also houses a community kitchen. With the demographic mainly consisting from the ages 20-30, the Nest focuses on fostering communal and personal growth. The building and program is organized to have a Russian doll effect, at the center is a German wood burning oven, or Kachelhofen.

The oven radiates heat towards the surrounding program. A perforated brick pattern allows for light,views and smells to spread throughout the building, allowing a constant connection between users.

ALLEYWAYS

Connecting through openings.

By turning a hallway into an alleyway community and purpose is brought into a neglected space. By placing operable openings in the kitchen and dining areas a connection is made between personal and public space.

These opening turn the kitchens into potential “storefronts” in which residents can exchange food. Dining spaces can also open to promote conversation between neighbors. The interior windows are strategically placed at different heights and have wooden slats covering them, to maintain privacy but still allow light to come through. The second floor greenery mimics the trees that line the streets of neighborhoods.
