NOTTINGHAM HAPPENINGS 2012 has flown by so quickly! The elections are over, for better or worse and with 2013, there is hopefully renewed optimism. We are so fortunate to be living in Texas and particularly the Houston area where our economic conditions have fared so much better than other parts of the country. Of course, if you happen to be one of those that is unemployed or under employed, that statement does not mean much to you and we know there are many of you in that situation here in NC. Through my 35+ years in banking, I have found myself in that position a number of times and it’s not easy. Keep the faith and do not give up! Hopefully, better times are ahead. The subdivision looks very nice for the holiday season and we thank the homeowners who have taken the extra time to decorate their homes and help make the community look festive. I received a number of emails after Veteran’s Day about the flags that were displayed. The Board contracted with a Boy Scout Troop to put up flags on various national holidays so you will see these on a regular basis. Again, we think they add something to the community. With the end of the year come taxes and HOA fees. The HOA fee statements went out in November and payment is due by the end of December. Again, if you have financial issues, PLEASE advise SCS Management and they will work out an installment program for you. No one can read minds, so you must let the management company know if you need additional time. You can also go to our website and make your payments on line but there is an additional charge for credit card usage but not debit cards. We have been receiving complaints from homeowners who reside on Rennie and Kingsland near Nottingham Country Elementary School that parents are parking their cars in the alleyways and on homeowner’s lawns waiting to pick up children from school. Sorry, but we cannot have that. The alleyways are too narrow for parking to pick up children. Parents need to use one of the Elementary School parking lots or park on the streets but certainly not on lawns and the alleyways. Please respect the property of the homeowners who reside near the school. If this activity continues we will have no choice but to have the Constables ticket the violators, which is something we do not wish to do.

FIREWORKS IN NOTTINGHAM COUNTRY

With New Year’s Eve coming up, please once again be advised that for better or worse, fireworks are permitted in NC because we are NOT in an incorporated municipality. That being said, we ask residents to be watchful of their children (and yes adults) when discharging fireworks. It has been dry of late and we do not want fires in the area. Also, be respectful of your neighbors and stop discharging them as early as possible. We have asked our Constables to cite homeowners that discharge fireworks at inappropriate hours.

281-492-1955 www.taxpartners.us We have seen an increase of late. Many of the new ones have been delinquent with NCCIA for many years and obviously their mortgage holders. Right now mortgage companies are behind in the foreclosure process, so we may continue to see an increase for a few months. The good news is that these typically are selling very quickly with most of the new owners doing a lot of good repairs to the properties and thus enhancing values throughout the neighborhood. Please be mindful of these vacant homes and try to assist in keeping them looking decent from the street if at all possible. If any homeowner is aware of an abandoned home that is not on this list, please contact the Board and we will check into it. Occasionally homeowners will leave a home in anticipation of foreclosure.

The latest news in Nottingham Country is posted on the Website first. We also have applications and forms posted on the website If you lose (or find) a pet, you can post a notice, along with a photo of the pet on our website. We will also notify our email subscribers or your loss. This will assure the loss of your pet gets even more coverage. Sam Cresap NCCIA Webmaster

2) Check the Exterior, Doors and Windows • Inspect exterior for crevice cracks and exposed entry points around pipes; seal them. • Use weather-stripping around doors to prevent cold air from entering the home and caulk windows. • Replace cracked glass in windows and, if you end up replacing the entire window, prime and paint exposed wood.4) Inspect Roof, Gutters & Downspouts • If your weather temperature will fall below 32 degrees in the winter, adding extra insulation to the attic will prevent warm air from creeping to your roof and causing ice dams. • Check flashing to ensure water cannot enter the home. • Replace worn roof shingles or tiles. • Clean out the gutters and use a hose to spray water down the downspouts to clear away debris. • Consider installing leaf guards on the gutters or extensions on the downspouts to direct water away from the home.

(Source: About.com) Here are ten tips to help you prepare your home for winter: 1) Heating System Inspection • Call an HVAC professional to inspect your furnace. • Stock up on air filters and change them monthly. • Consider switching out your thermostat for a programmable thermostat. • Remove all flammable material from the area surrounding your furnace.

The teams that the students decided on were: A legal team with the responsibility of researching and making sure they complied with all FAA regulations regarding balloon launches. The payload team was tasked with the design of the payload package to include the container for the experiments and cameras, as well as what experiments were to be sent aloft. They learned how to do electronic soldering and how to assemble electronic boards to contain the chips and memory cards necessary for each experiment. They also had to take into account the extremely cold temperatures encountered at high altitudes as well as the hurricane force winds the payload would pass through.

Path the balloon followed (from iPhone).

TAYLOR HIGH SCHOOL CLASS LAUNCHES WEATHER BALLOON TO OVER 100,000 FEET! The Taylor High School Computer Science 2/3 class launched a weather balloon on Saturday, Oct. 20th, from just west of LaGrange Texas. The balloon journeyed a distance of 61 miles and reached a maximum altitude of 103,000 feet. Teacher, Don Adams, explained “I started formulating the idea of a team-building project for my class during the summer. Many schools have done this kind of project before so I wanted ours to be a little different. I challenged the students on the first day of school using a Prezi presentation of the recent Mars Rover mission and the resulting reaction of the NASA team at the control center during the actual landing. I asked them to work as a team and send a camera to 100,000 feet to take pictures. Any experiments or electronics they sent up had to be built by them. They had to do all of the research and product selection for the mission as well as examine the legal requirements by the FAA for launching weather balloons. To accomplish this “mission,” one of the students took on the role of project coordinator and the rest of the students were divided into the teams necessary to plan and execute the mission.”

18

The launch and recovery team was responsible for all launch and recovery procedures. They developed a checklist to be followed the day of the actual launch. This team also selected the balloon and parachute recovery system and was also tasked with calculating how much helium would be required for the balloon to reach 100,000 feet. The balloon, when launched, would have a diameter of 6.5 feet and by the time it reached 100,000 feet would expand to over 30 feet in diameter.

Nottingham Country

January 2013

The software team developed tracking software to project approximately where the landing would occur. Coupled with software from the University of Wyoming and wind aloft reports from the US Weather Service we were able to narrow the search area to a small triangle several miles wide. The actual recovery site was inside this triangle! The end result is over 5,000 pictures taken every 2 seconds from prelaunch to the max altitude. The team used an iPhone to get live GPS updates as to the location of the balloon when it landed. However, the software on the iPhone failed shortly after the launch and the balloon disappeared for two weeks until its location was discovered by a farmer/rancher in one of his fields west of East Bernard. The payload was recovered intact and included two cameras, the iPhone (which still recorded the track the balloon followed), temperature sensors and an altimeter/GPS unit that recorded the altitude using up to 66 satellites for triangulation. The coldest temperature recorded by the temperature sensors was a -67 degrees Fahrenheit. Mr. Adams commented “All in all, I was very pleased with the entire project. It was an empty feeling when the balloon disappeared but seeing the student’s reaction when I revealed the recovered balloon to them in class was something I will never forget. The team building aspect of the project accomplished everything and more that I had hoped. This is something we will definitely repeat.”

MORE THAN 165 PARTICIPATE IN 15 TH ANNUAL PROMISE TO READ PROGRAM Community members from Katy and the surrounding area recently stopped what they were doing to read to students in more than 345 classes as part of Katy ISD’s 15th annual Promise to Read program. Through Promise to Read, volunteers promised to spend 30 minutes reading to an elementary classroom during one week in November. This year, ten Katy ISD elementary campuses hosted the event with Partners in Education: Morton Ranch, Hutsell, Nottingham, Kilpatrick, King, Pattison, Mayde Creek, Griffin, Bear Creek and McRoberts Elementary. Host campuses rotate each year so that, over a three-year period, every Katy ISD elementary has an opportunity to participate. “Promise to Read has become a volunteer event that many in our community really look forward to. Most of our visiting readers return year after year,” says Sandi Meier, Katy ISD Promise to Read and Classroom Champions Coordinator. “Having a guest reader in the classroom is a fun treat for students, but it also promotes the lifelong joy of reading.” Readers represented a cross section of local companies and organizations including: Amegy Bank, American Kids Athletics, AXA Financial Advisors, Brazos Valley Schools Credit Union, CenterPoint Energy, Chick-Fil-A of Katy, City of Katy, CiCi’s Pizza, Cinco Ranch Conservatory of Music, ExxonMobil, First Victoria Bank, Grand Vision Center, Gary Greene Realtors, Harris County Sheriff’s Department, Hasta La Pasta, H-E-B Katy Market, Herff Jones Graduation Center, Houston Aeros, Houston Museum of Natural Science, Katy

New Latter-day Saint Congregation in Katy Growth in the Katy area has led to the need for a new congregation in the Katy Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A congregation, called a ward, is a geographic area with about 300-600 church members. When an area sees growth, such that local wards are reaching the upper size limits, a new ward is formed. That is what happened this October in Katy, with the creation of the new Katy Mills Ward. Portions of the existing Katy 1st Ward, Katy 3rd and Katy 4th, make up the new ward. Katy Mills Ward now serves 350 church members south of I-10, between Woods Road on the west and Mason Road on the east, with the south boundary approximately at FM 1463. The

Katy Mills Ward is one of eleven congregations that make up the Katy Stake. The Church presence in Katy began with one member in around 1950 and has steadily grown since then and now includes several thousand Latter-day Saints. The bishop or lay leader of the Katy Mills Ward is Cody Larsen, who works as a finance manager at Phillips 66 and Company. Bishop Larsen will be assisted in leading the congregation with two counselors: Robert Lund and Dave Bleazard. They began immediately setting up leadership for various auxiliary organizations, for youth, children and adults. The new Katy Mills Ward meets at the LDS meetinghouse at 1928 Drexel Road in Katy, sharing that building with two other wards. Their Sunday meetings start at 11:00 AM. Visitors are always welcome. Times and locations for all wards can be found at Mormon.org; click on “visit us,” enter an address and the appropriate location and meeting schedule will be supplied. Alternatively, clicking on the map to locate a nearby meeting is also an option on the webpage.
