47+ YEARS EXPERIENCE

By Trey Collier April is National Lawn and Garden month! This gives you a wonderful reason to get outside and get your backyard and garden ready. Whether you are starting from scratch or are an experienced pro, here are several tips that you can use to celebrate Lawn and Garden month in style! Consider Backyard Composting - Composting is nature’s process of recycling decomposed organic materials into a rich soil known as compost. Backyard composting is an acceleration of the process that occurs in nature. It is recycling at its finest! Use kitchen waste (such as food or paper towels), lawn clippings and wood chips to provide rich and powerful soil for your garden and lawn. Anything that was once living will decompose, giving you endless options for composting. Composting is good for your plants and for you! Adding organic materials to the soil improves moisture retention. It provides a balanced, slow-release source of nutrients that helps the soil hold nutrients long enough for plants to use them. Healthier plants means a healthier you! It will also save you money because you will no longer have to buy fertilizer. Add a compost bin to your garden and start today! Add a fountain - Outdoor fountains offer an easy and affordable way to add style to your lawn or garden. The soothing sound of running water will help to create a tranquil and relaxing escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Transform your garden into your own personal paradise! Consider adding variety - If you are fond of flower gardening, venture into edible vegetables! You will be thrilled with the sense of accomplishment you feel when you feed your family fresh, healthy produce that you grew on your own. Beans, squash, cucumbers, lettuce/greens, tomatoes, peppers, beets and garlic are all great vegetables to start with. They are relatively easy to maintain and will offer beautiful variety. If you are already growing your own vegetables, consider planting an eye catching flower garden (try marigold, lupine, daisy or wildflower mix seeds). Fruits are also a great option. Apples, figs, blueberries, blackberries and raspberries are great for beginners. Variety is the spice of life! Go high-tech - Modern technology impacts our daily life. Why not let it impact your backyard? There are several innovations in outdoor living that you will wonder how you ever lived without. The Robomower will make mowing your lawn virtually effortless. No more back-breaking work and labor intensive afternoons spent cutting grass. You simply install special sensors around the perimeter of your yard and push a button. It doesn’t get much easier than that! Another product worth trying is the Mosquito Eliminator. Gone are the days of tacky bug zappers and pesky insects at parties. It is so beautiful that your guests will never guess that it is fighting mosquitoes and other pests. The Eliminator uses high-tech black light technology to cover up to 1,000 feet and capture up to 6,000 mosquitoes with one cartridge. Other garden technology to be on the look for: gardening apps for smartphones (such as iVeggieGarden, which allows you to view over 500 varieties of vegetables and offers tips and ideas), time lapsed garden cameras (which take pictures at various intervals and produce videos or slideshows showing growth progress) and electronic soil testers.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?

We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through April. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

IT’S THAT TIME

By Cheryl Conley, TWRC Wildlife Center This is the time of year when you may hear the pitter patter of tiny feet in your attic or chitter chatter in your walls or chimneys. It’s baby season in the world of wildlife. The most likely animals that may be using your home or out-buildings as a nesting site are raccoons and squirrels. If you’re hearing activity during the day, it’s probably a squirrel. Raccoons are nocturnal and are active at night. If you have a raccoon “renting” from you, it’s best if you can leave her alone for a few weeks. When the babies are old enough, she will move out on her own taking her babies with her. If you’d like to strongly encourage her to leave, in the evening you can place a loud radio, bright lights and unpleasant smells (vinegar is good) in the attic or at the base of your chimney. This will create an unpleasant environment for her. If you hear noises in your walls, tap gently where you’re hearing the noise. If the animal is able to, this should scare them out. If you

continue to hear the noise, this may mean a baby is stuck. Seek professional help for removal but make sure you hire a company that will work to try to reunite the mother and baby. Trapping only mothers or removing babies without the mother is cruel and inhumane. Not all animal control companies are alike, so do your research. Ask questions. Get specifics on how the animals will be handled. Will the animal be killed and if so, why? Are there offspring that will be orphaned or abandoned? Insist on humane techniques. If you need assistance finding a humane animal control company, give TWRC Wildlife Center a call. The best way to prevent attic guests is to inspect your home for entry points and block them. Make sure, however, that there are no animals in your attic or walls before you do this. Look over, under and around your roof area. If you find openings, repair them. Remember, although animals may be unwelcomed guests, they are only looking for a dry, quiet, safe place to give birth and care for their little ones until they’re old enough to be on their own - just like us. For more information or for help with wildlife issues, call TWRC Wildlife Center at 713-468-TWRC or check our website at www.twrcwildlifecenter. org.

OUTDOOR PROJECTS TO HELP YOU SPRING INTO SUMMER

Did you know there are many water-wise “Do It Yourself” projects that can help improve your outdoor space as the warmer months approach? From harvesting rainwater to building rain-gutter gardens to creating sustainable landscapes, you can be water efficient while beautifying your home. Harvesting rainwater using a rain barrel allows you to capture the run off from your home and reuse it for irrigation or other non-potable uses. Freshly collected rainwater can be a great way to water your landscape between rain events. For tips on building a rain barrel, please visit Agri-Life Extension http://agrilifeextension.tamu.edu/ solutions/rainwater-harvesting/ or you may purchase one from your local home-improvement store. Repurposing or converting a piece of rain gutter into a “gutter garden” is an efficient use of a natural and “green” design idea that combines creativity, recycling and functionality. Gutter gardens can be used to grow flowers, succulents, vegetables, fruit and herbs and can be freestanding or attached to walls, railings and fences where they catch runoff from a good rain shower. Examples of creative raingutter gardens can be found at www.pinterest.com/explore/guttergarden/. Creating eco-friendly gardens is a great way to reduce your water usage. Using native plants provides vibrant colors with less maintenance. Watering your plants properly ensures that necessary nutrients are not washed away, which reduces runoff and promotes the health of your plants. Popular native plants for our area are: Black-eyed Susan, Texas Lantana and Autumn Sage. For a list of other native plants that may work well in your landscape, please visit the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center: www.wildflower.org/ explore.php. GARDENING TIPS FOR APRIL

Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging helps eliminate a great many pests that die from various causes while in the bag. When you buy ‘loose’ mulch that is trucked to your home, you are also buying ants, roaches, termites, etc… Spend a little more on bagged material and save lots of future pest problems. Keep your mulch at least 4” - 6” below the top of your homes exposed foundation edge/side. This will aid in minimizing pests in your home and allow for quick and accurate termite inspections. Shrubs, Flowers and groundcovers - Trim all shrubs/plants at least 12” - 18” back from your home. Do your best to create a plant free zone that is 18” - 24” wide around your home. The exception is your lawn - it can grow up next to the slab as long as you keep it 4” - 6” below the top of the slab. The most conducive to termite infestation are groundcover plantings, growing high against your homes exterior or (especially) ivy that grows on your walls. Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. The spring spray eliminates overwintering pests and fungi while preparing trees to resist the pest onslaught of summer with residual pesticides. The fall spray also kills pests from the summer, prevents most fungi from occurring over the winter and puts your valuable asset off to a healthy winter’s dormancy. Lawn - Spring is the perfect time to do a fungicide treatment to stop brown patch in its tracks along with other fungi. If your lawn is thin and weak in some areas, here are some important fundamentals: a) lawn aeration b) fertilization c) weed control. Most important is proper watering: • Water once per week (unless you get a 1/2” rain or more - then do not water.) • Water heavily (1” - 2”) for total lawn coverage. • In severe drought, water every 5th day. • Water from 5 AM to 7 AM in the morning - NOT AT NIGHT. • A heavy deep weekly watering makes the turf grow deeper, stronger and more drought resistant roots. • Less watering also saves you money!!

Thanks to everyone who made the 2nd Annual Lobo Band Chili CookOff a huge success! The fund raising event was held on February 27th in the LCHS Commons. Our guests had a great time sampling several varieties of delicious chili prepared by cook-off teams made up of color guard and band sections. They were also treated to a raffle and a huge assortment of baked goods courtesy of our generous band and color guard families. The chili tasters were asked to cast a vote for their favorite chili. At the end of the day, 1st place went to the Trombones, 2nd place went to the French Horns, 3rd place went to the Trumpets and the Color Guard were voted Taster’s Choice. Congratulations to all of the participating teams and we offer a special thanks to the cook-off sponsors for donating your time and materials. We’ll see y’all next year!

GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL COPPER CREEK MEADOWS COMMUNITY

Our Girl Scout Cookie sale for 2016 concluded on March 20th. Hope you stocked up, as there will be a long wait before cookie time rolls around again! Many thanks to all our cookie volunteers and to all the troops who participated. We appreciate the support of our friends and neighbors. ! Money earned from the annual Cookie sale funds individual troop activities and supports Council programs and camps. Some of our troops really made their cookie booths special. Members of troop 113035 had a cookie booth on Valentine’s Day and report that they sold 200 boxes in 2 hours. These Girl Scouts really enjoy dressing up. They represented Vietnam at our World Thinking Day event and took part in our cafeteria-size Friendship Circle. The World Thinking Day event drew almost 200 girls (and their leaders). Each troop represented a different country and presented national costumes, music, food and crafts at their booths. They also had some great swaps! Stick on mustaches, crepes and chocolate lollipops that were shaped like the Eiffel tower were featured at the “France” booth. Maracas made from plastic spoons and Easter eggs accompanied Fiesta costumes at the Mexico booth the special collars and headdresses seen at the Egypt booth looked as if they had come from the King Tut exhibit. Beautiful costumes, bright colors and lots of smiling faces made traveling “around the world” as easy as moving around the cafeteria! Our event started off with a flag ceremony and recitation of the Girl Scout Promise and finished up with a Friendship Circle and singing “Make New Friends.” We also collected donations for the Juliette Low World Friendship Fund. Our STRIDERS event brought an afternoon of track and field events, with families coming out to cheer on their daughters. Girls jumped rope, ran in individual and relay races, threw softballs and jumped in standing and running events. We also had a few snacks to keep

Langham

up our strength for all those activities. Our spring Leader/Daughter event in Wimberley featured “Art in Bloom” crafts and activities, as well as the Talent Show, Dutch oven Cook-off and all our usual fun activities. Horseback riding and rock climbing, kayaking, shopping and eating the results of the Dutch Oven Cook-Off are all part of this exciting weekend. Cadette Troop 16435 reports that they attended the “Be an Upstander” event at the Holocaust Museum. They earned the ‘Science of Happiness” badge and the Interact award towards the “Amaze Journey.” April will be a busy time for our Cadette, Senior and Ambassador Girl Scouts, with activities such as Cadette Weekend, Scouts at SAM and Girl Scout Law Day. Some of these older Girl Scouts will also be participating with adults as delegates to the annual Council Meeting. Daisy Troop 113049 reports that they made “blessing bags” to be handed out to those in need. We are getting close to the end of the school Scouting year, with a Bridging Ceremony planned for May, as troops move on to the next Girl Scout level. Summer brings resident, day and twilight camps and the chance to learn new skills, have fun and make new friends. Some of our troops are also looking forward to the Girl Scout Night Sleepover at the Sugarland Skeeters stadium; they will be taking part in a parade around the stadium, enjoying the game and pitching their tents on the field afterwards! Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5 (must be in kindergarten) through 18 who are willing to accept the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Girls may join at any level and no previous Scouting experience is required. BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA COPPERHEAD DISTRICT

For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, selfconfidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives. The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to: • Try new things. • Provide service to others. • Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards. Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high self-esteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made, peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made. Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston Area Counsel - Copperhead District which includes 23 Cub Scout Packs (boys 5 to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys from 11 to 18 years old) and 10 Venturing units (boys and girls from 14 to 21). Our Units typically meet weekly. Many of our units are supported by the local Elementary Schools including: Birkes, Copeland, Duryea, Fiest, Hemmingway, Holmsley, Horne, Jowell, Lowery, Metcalf, Owens, Postma, Robinson, Sheridan, Tipps, Walker and Wilson. Other Community groups include: Autumn Creek Baptist Church, Beck and Masten Automotive, Cornerstone United Methodist Church, Copperfield Church, Crossbridge Church, Cy-Fair Kiwanis Club, Deerfield Village HOA, LDS Bear Creek and Copperfield Wards, Middlegate Village HOA, Peace Community Church, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church and Thornton Middle School. Please contact Angelita Guerrero, Copperhead District Executive (713-756-3389 or email angelita.guerrero@scouting.org) or to go www.copperhead.shac. org to find join a Scouting unit near you.

The Cy-Fair Express Network (CYFEN) will host the 8th Annual Cy-Fair Women’s EXPO at Sterling Country Club at Houston National. We are so excited to share some of the exciting plans we have for our annual expo. Besides giving vendors a place to showcase their products and services, the goal for our expo year is to get the community more involved and show the Cy-Fair area what ABWA and CYFEN is all about. One of the ways we are doing this is to have dynamic round table discussions focusing on health and wellness, communication, relationships and personal finance. Our Keynote speaker will be ACTION 13 CONSUMER Reporter Patricia Lopez who focuses on saving you money through her daily “Stretch Your Dollar” segments on ABC13. You can join Patricia’s presentation at 12 Noon. Vendor registration is now open. We only take 2 business types per category and NO two businesses can be exactly the same. We only have 50 vendor tables available so reserve your spot now! There are also a very limited number of sponsorship opportunities still available. For more information about the Expo or about CYFEN, please go to CYFEN.org or email expovendor@cyfen.org.

CHILDREN’S CHOIRS PRESENT: “BLAST OFF!”

The Children’s Choirs of Cornerstone United Methodist Church will be presenting their musical “Blast Off!” on Sunday, April 24th at the 10:45 AM service. Told with props, set and costumes, “Blast Off!” tells the story about kids who dream of being astronauts, traveling through space and learning of God the Creator’s marvelous creation. With help from various stars, planets, a cantankerous robot and the wise and patient Flight Commander, Mr. Houston, they learn that the God who created the stars and the heavens is the same God who loved the world so much that He sent His son to die for them, wants to have a relationship with them and with Him nothing is impossible.

The women’s group will begin a study His Name is Jesus, Life and Power in the Master’s Ministry by Pastor and Author Jack Hayford. His Name Is Jesus focuses on the life of Jesus as seen in Matthew, Mark and Luke. It shows how Jesus fulfilled Old Testament prophecy and how to understand key parables and other teachings of Jesus. Learning the importance of applying His words to our lives, we’ll explore Christ’s earthly ministry as seen in His titles and discover more fully what it means to follow Him as Savior and Lord.
