new Board of Directors 2013-2014 Dear neighbors; Westminster Village (Houston) Homeowners Association Inc. is pleased to announce the new Board of Directors 2013-2014: Dalia Thibodeaux, Donna McGown, Eduard Hinojosa, Hector Segura and Hector Ramos. Monthly meetings are held the third Tuesday of each month starting at 7 PM at the MUD 16 Recreational Center locate at the end of Westminster Landing. Copies of the Agenda and minutes are placed at the entrance Marquise in front the Gazebo and from time to time are mailed to you. We invite you to come to the meetings and work in a committee: architectural, watch neighbors, budget, recreational, Christmas or fraternity committee. It’s good for neighbors take care one another.

ACC requests

Friends, we respectfully request that you submit an ACC request to the Westminster Village HOA, Inc, for changes to your yard or home. Things like sheds and back yard patios, visible from the street, require prior approval from the ACC committee. Changes to your yard, including even minor landscaping, rocks and bushe,s require approval from the Home Owner Association. The rule of thumb is you can’t make any changes to your yard or home that are visible from the street without prior approval. Please help keep expenses down by first getting permission to make changes instead of the HOA having to mail you a deed restriction letter.

ATTENTION DOG OWNERS ACMP has received complaints concerning people walking their dogs in the park and letting them do their “business.” By law you are supposed to clean up after your pet. Pet owners should have respect for our park and the others who wish to use this park. This is not a dog park, this area is for residents to enjoy. Please keep your dogs out of the park. WESTMINSTER VILLAGE HOA

March 2013 March Gardening Tips

vegetables • Plant vegetables such as tomatoes, sweet corn and snap beans and pepper, as well as cucumbers, lima or butter beans, cantaloupe, okra (if the soil has warmed sufficiently - 70 degrees F. or higher), southern peas, pumpkin, squash, peanuts and watermelon. LAWN • Re-sod or replant as needed with turfgrasses adapted to this part of Texas and suited to the planting location (shade or sun). • When resodding semi-shaded areas with St. Augustine, use ONLY the variety Floratam for best pest resistance. See www.plantanswers.com/grass.htm. TREES AND SHRUBS • Plant container-grown trees and shrubs as soon as possible. In shady areas, where grass is difficult to grow, consider planting a dependable groundcover such as English ivy, Asian jasmine, vinca or one of the prostrate junipers. • Prune spring flowering and evergreen shrubs during early March. However, be sure to prune spring flowering shrubs after they have bloomed. • Fertilize with a pre-plant application of a slowrelease fertilizer analysis such as 19 - 5 - 9 at the rate of 3 pounds per 100 square feet of garden planting area. Early March is the ideal time to fertilize landscape plants because you give them food just before the spring growing season starts.

CONSIDERING GETTING A NEW DOG? …or if you know friends and family who are, please consider and suggest rescuing vs. buying a dog from a breeder. We have every breed of purebred dog available in our Texas pounds and shelters, in great quantities. This is because of the complete lack of any regulations or limit on breeding in Texas. Approximately 30-40% of euthanasias in pounds involve purebred animals. Mixed breeds in TX stand almost no chance of making it out of the pounds alive. There is absolutely nothing wrong with these dogs; they just had the misfortune of being owned by people who did not provide for their needs and care and obviously had no real commitment to their pet. Countless numbers of people turn their own dogs in to high-kill shelters, dump them rurally in the middle of nowhere or let them roam and stray. It reflects a mentality that most dog lovers do not understand. When you or someone you know considers adopting a dog, please check out one of our five local animal shelters: 1. BARC - Bureau of Animal Regulation and Care i.e. Houston’s animal control or city pound 2. Harris County Animal Control 3. Houston SPCA 4. Houston Humane Society 5. CAP - Citizens for Animal Protection Or check the following breed specific rescue organizations: www.adoptapet.com www.petfinder.com www.houstonpettalk.com/resources/rescue-groups For any questions contact the Pet Safety Committee at www.lakesoneldridge.net or through i-neighbors.org

40 Something 40 Something is a social group for people over fifty. The group meets the 2nd Saturday each month for socializing, cards and dominos. The meetings are held at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton at 6:30 PM. The club offers one bus trip a month and several dining outs throughout the year. If you would like further information, please call Dorothy at 713-856-6987 or JoAnn at 281-550-8162.

SERVICE

YOUR HEALTH NOW! – DANGERS OF FAST FOOD It’s convenient, cheap and even available within 5 minutes or less: FAST FOOD. What does this quick goodness really do to your body and health? Read on and that burger or bean burrito won’t look or taste so yummy anymore: • Fast Food Affects Energy Levels. Fast food doesn’t contain the nutrients your body needs to stay healthy. As a result, you may feel chronically fatigued with a lack of energy. Because fast food and junk food don’t contain adequate protein and good carbohydrates, blood sugar levels drop quickly after eating, leaving you grumpy, fatigued and craving sugar. • Fast Food Causes Obesity & Deathly Illnesses. Fast food has a surplus of fat and as fat accumulates in your body, you gain weight and become obese, putting you at risk for strokes, diabetes, heart disease, arthritis and even a heart attack. The high levels of fat and sodium in fast food causes high blood pressure or hypertension. Excessive dietary sodium can also have a negative effect on renal function, even leading to kidney disease. • Fast Food Damages the Liver & Heart. The high levels of fat and sodium in fast food raise blood cholesterol levels and contribute to arterial plaque build-up. The high levels of trans fatty acids in fast foods leads to fatty liver deposits, which cause liver dysfunction and disease.

YOUR HEALTH NOW! - Wellness Tip!

There’s a big secret when it comes to weight loss: decrease sugar and salt. How do you decrease sugar and salt from your diet and what does this do? • Begin by reducing your caffeine in-take, be it coffee, tea or soda. By reducing these items by just one glass, you’re reducing your sugar in-take. • Decrease the number of teaspoons of sugar in your coffee and tea by one teaspoon. And if you MUST have it sweeter, replace with half a teaspoon honey. • Instead of eating an entire snack bag of chips, eat only half and you will reduce sodium big time. • Purchase low sodium foods and snacks. You will never miss the extra salt. Just try, TRY, these few simple things and you are guaranteed to lose at least two pounds in one week of reduction, combined with an increase of exercise and water consumption. I promise!

Fun outdoor easter activities!

Outdoor Easter games offer a family activity beyond the traditional Easter egg hunt. The games also lend themselves well indoors. This allows you to move the Easter activities indoors if the weather does not cooperate. Obstacle Course: An Easter-themed obstacle course gets everyone moving. Each player needs a spoon and a plastic Easter egg. The players balance the egg on the spoon while navigating an obstacle course set up in the back yard. Ideas for obstacles include sawhorses to climb under, Easter baskets to weave through and plastic eggs scattered on the ground that the players have to tiptoe around to avoid smashing them. Egg Rolling: Each player needs a different color egg for this game. Place one white egg in the middle of the lawn. Each player takes a turn rolling their egg. The goal is to get the colored egg to come closest to the white egg. Easter Egg Toss: This outdoor Easter game requires players to toss eggs back and forth without dropping them. Any type of egg works. Pairs of players start close together. After successfully tossing and catching the egg, the pairs move back a step each for a greater distance and another toss. Continue widening the gap to make the game more of a challenge. Courtesy of: livestrong.com

LANGHAM CREEK GRADUATE PLAYS IN SUPER BOWL Kelechi Osemele, a 2007 graduate of Langham Creek High School, performed on a football player’s ultimate stage when he took the field for the Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl XLVII. Osemele, a rookie offensive lineman, started all 16 regular season games as a right tackle before moving over to the starting left guard position for the playoffs. The 6-foot-6, 333-pound athlete was drafted out of Iowa State in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft at No. 60 overall. While playing for the Cyclones in college, Osemele was a three-time AllBig 12 Conference selection. At Langham Creek, Osemele played for now-retired head coach Mac Woodfin. Woodfin recalled how far Osemele progressed since he entered the program as an out-of-shape freshman. “I remember he was doing one lap around the track for a physical fitness test, just walking and he tore the patella tendon in his knee. That’s the kind of condition he was in,” Woodfin said. “But by the time he graduated, he was an incredible physical specimen. We thought he had a chance to be something special.” Current Langham Creek head coach Todd Thompson maintains periodic contact with Osemele and has invited him back to speak to Lobo athletes. “We had him down here to speak to the team the day before the NFL Draft last spring and he was a great example for our kids,” Thompson said. “He’s a down-to-earth guy who’s a product of hard work and academic success. Osemele doesn’t have an ounce of arrogance in him; he’s just a good person.” Woodfin said he still keeps in touch with Osemele and is proud of his progress into a Super Bowl starter. “He’s really blossomed in a short amount of time this season,” he said. “He sticks out on the field and has done a fantastic job. I know he’s thrilled to death about this game and I’m thrilled to watch him perform at this level.”

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through March. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
