Hit the brakes…

Speeding in Lone Oak has been a hot topic of discussion lately. There have been numerous reports of speeding and of running stop signs. We have notified the Sheriff of these reports and have asked that tickets be issued to offenders. Several surrounding schools and residents have purchased kid alert safety signs to be placed in front of their homes and or buildings to remind people to slow down. If you would like to purchase a safety sign, here are a couple websites that sell the signs, www.kaplantoys.com and www. discountschoolsupply.com

Lone Oak Crime Watch Needs Your Help

Lone Oak’s Crime Watch Chairperson, Kevin Pigg, would like to encourage more residents to become involved in the Lone Oak Crime Watch Program. More Block Captains are needed! Each Block Captain is responsible for contacting the residents who are assigned to them when there is information to pass along regarding incidents in Lone Oak or surrounding areas. Most Block Captains set up their distribution list via email, so it is important for residents to know who their Block Captain is. The time required is minimal - attend a few periodic meetings, distribute information, be aware of happenings in your neighborhood and host a National Night Out Party once a year! If you would like to volunteer or would just like more information, please contact: Kevin Pigg at 281 859-7444 or email him at revkev11@gmail.com

GARDENING TIPS FOR OCTOBER

• Dig and store caladiums before the foliage dies. Allow the bulbs to dry in the shade, shake off the dried soil and dust with sulphur to control fungus. Store by hanging in open mesh bags or old panty hose. • Flowers planted for spring can begin when the temperatures are going to stay cooler. Shrubs and trees can be planted now. Woody plants concentrate on root growth through the winter and the more headstart they can get before summer, the better. • October 15th is about the time for dividing and planting daylilies. • Watch out for brown patch in St. Augustine grass. These circular brown patches are caused by a fungus that is activated by moist cool weather. Control with Daconil. • If you need to do any pruning, do it early in the month. The re-growth stimulated by pruning needs to harden off before that odd-ball frost of Halloween. Prune fruit trees when leaves begin to fall. Remove all dead, weak and over-crowded growth. Tip back main branches to control size and shape. Spray w/dormant oil when temperature is between 30-60 degrees. • Cut back tops of perennials after they have bloomed. Divide roots and transplant anytime from now until March, the earlier the better. • Get the ant baits down. This will greatly reduce your spring populations. • Clover left over from last year may be growing. It’s best to hit it with the post-emerge herbicides in October and November. At least two applications are usually needed, even if done this early. • For color throughout the winter, begin planting pansies.

REPORT A STREETLIGHT OUTAGE

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through October. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

Brothers There is something special about being able to play football with your brother. The Warriors took the field for the home opener with five sets of brothers among the 46 team members. When the players are asked for words to describe our team, one word that often comes up is brotherhood. It is truly becoming that, both on and off the field, but for ten players in particular, it runs very deep. Cy-Christian to Host K-12 Fall Preview On Thursday, November 8th, from 7-8:30 PM, prospective families will be given the opportunity to visit Cypress Christian School to gather information and tour of the campus. The Admissions Department will begin accepting applications for 2013-2014 on this date. For more information, visit CypressChristian.org or call 281-469-7745. Not an Average Cy-Christian Football Practice Early in each season, Warrior football players take a day of practice to do something a little different. They leave the pads in the lockers and load the bus to travel to another part of town. Over 50 football players, coaches and dads invade a neighborhood that could use more smiles and they host a football camp. This year, 30+ kids from Houston’s First Baptist Faith Center learned a little about football while having lots of fun. Scotty Sanders has worked at the Faith Center for years and was impressed with how the CyChristian players engaged and interacted with the kids. Coach Spenn’s goal for his coaches is for them to be transformational. He said, “To do this, we have to think outside the box. Some may see it as a loss of a practice, but the reality is that the impact on the team will have a far greater value than running a few extra plays in a practice.” Many of our players were greatly impacted and will remember days like this for a lifetime. It was evident that the kids from the neighborhood had a great time based on the smiles on their faces. The love of Christ was shared through the game of football and that is the definition of true success.

Girl Scouts in the U.S.A. have been celebrating our 100th birthday this year with a variety of events and activities. Many of our girls and their families attended the B.I.G. Event on September 29th. Visiting the booths and exhibit areas was a wonderful chance to see the different activities and opportunities available. If you were there, you might have seen the Green Starlettes dance and drill team perform, listened to musical performances by council choirs and found out about the backpacking and equitation programs. There were a lot of other areas and interest groups to explore. Many of us also participated in the service projects by bringing donations for Cypress Cares (lip balm, playing cards and travel size packs of baby wipes) or for the Houston Humane Society (hand sanitizers, leashes, collars and towels). It won’t be time to order Girl Scout cookies until January, but our Fall Product Sale began on September 14th. There are 14 different kinds of candy and nut products to choose from and they are all delicious! Whether your favorite snack is trail mix or chocolate covered pretzels, you will have a great selection to choose from. Ask a Girl Scout in your neighborhood for more information. Your Satisfaction is Our Future

Bishop Marc Calvert, who ministers to one of these congregations, said, “Members of the Church in Fairfield have met in a church building in Waller for about 20 years. As Fairfield has grown and developed, so also has the number of Church members in this area. There are now approximately 250 Latter-day Saints living in the Fairfield community and they are looking forward to worshiping much closer to home.” The new red and beige brick structure has a traditional architectural style accented with Texas stone. The facility will include a chapel (sanctuary) for Sunday worship services, classrooms for gospel study and a gymnasium with a hardwood basketball court. When completed, the building will also host youth activities on Wednesday evenings, including meetings for several Church-sponsored troops of the Boy Scouts of America.

Kimberly Akimbo, By David Lindsay-Abaire, Directed by Ron Jones, November 29-December 15, 2012, STUDIO 101 (1824 Spring Street, Houston 77007). Kimberly Akimbo is a play written in 2000 by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. Its title character is a lonely teenage girl suffering from a disease a lot like progeria, that causes her to age 4 and a half times as fast as normal. Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfit (a teenage boy) and the two form an attachment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed.
