Crossing over railroad tracks, roadways, parking lots, and interstates, our transit pedestrian bridges ensure commuters safe and convenient access, assist with congestion relief, and enhance the aesthetics of the facilities where they are placed.

SOUND TRANSIT COMMUTER RAIL STATION PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE KENT, WA

• KPFF designed this 255-foot-long steel truss pedestrian bridge with an elevator/stair combination spanning over a roadway and BNSF railroad tracks.

• To avoid disruption to BNSF operations, the bridge was assembled on the ground and lifted into place just before midnight between freight runs.

• The bridge’s agricultural design theme includes a corrugated steel roof on the station and public art that reflects the area’s farming history.

LAFAYETTE PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE PORTLAND, OR

• KPFF provided final structural design and construction support for a new 185-foot-long custom weathering steel truss pedestrian bridge over the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) tracks in Portland.

• The distinctive design features stair and elevator towers at both ends, with an ADA-accessible, 12-foot-wide walkway spanning the two towers.

• KPFF collaborated with local steel fabricators to develop a customized design optimized for economy, fabrication, constructability, and maintenance.

LAKEWOOD STATION PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE LAKEWOOD, WA

• KPFF designed both the 100-foot-long pedestrian bridge and the Lakewood Sounder Station itself, resulting in a cohesive aesthetic for the overall project.

• The pedestrian bridge, featuring an elevator/stair combination, provides a connection between the Sound Transit platform and neighborhoods on the opposite side of the tracks.

• KPFF met an aggressive design timeline, driven by Sound Transit’s projected introduction of service at this location.

UNION STATION PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE PORTLAND, OR

• A vital commuter connection, this 256-foot-long pedestrian bridge allows users to go safely between downtown Union Station and three nearby housing complexes.

• KPFF’s design consists of three spans of 62 feet, 148 feet, and 46 feet in length; the tied-arch main span was assembled on-site and lifted into place by a 250-ton crane.

• The main span is flanked by double steel girder approach spans.

TUKWILA URBAN CENTER PEDESTRIAN/BICYCLE BRIDGE TUKWILA, WA

• KPFF was prime project manager and lead engineer for a new multi-use trail and pedestrian/bicycle bridge over Green River.

• The 225-foot-long, tied, twin-arch structure connects the Tukwila Urban Center to the Sounder Commuter Rail/Amtrak Station.

• Project challenges included limited construction lay-down area, stringent permitting requirements, and poor soils at the site.

LEGACY SALMON CREEK MEDICAL CAMPUS PEDESTRIAN BRIDGES VANCOUVER, WA

• This series of pedestrian bridges, spanning up to 150 feet, links two four-story medical office buildings and crosses over the entrance roads below.

• KPFF designed the structures to accommodate stringent vibration requirements for neurosurgery, microsurgery, and MRI suites.

• The project features a curved exterior façade, central courtyard and water feature, and rooftop healing gardens.

PARKROSE STATION BRIDGE (FISHBIRD) PORTLAND, OR

• This artistic 160-foot-long bridge consists of hollow tube steel trusses with a concrete deck.

• Known as “Fishbird” due to its proximity to both the Columbia River and Portland International Airport, the structure evokes a creature that could swim or fly.

• Crossing the northbound lanes of I-205, the bridge provides convenient access to the airport’s MAX light rail station.

VA MEDICAL CENTER SKYBRIDGE PORTLAND, OR

• This award-winning 660-foot-long glass- and aluminum-enclosed pedestrian bridge required innovative solutions to traverse a heavily wooded, deep ravine.

• A 377-foot-long center span connects the second floor of the VA Medical Center with the ninth floor of the Oregon Health and Science University Hospital.

• Key considerations in KPFF’s design were the effects of wind, seismic loading, temperatures, and vibrations on the slender, profiled structure.

UNIVERSITY DISTRICT GATEWAY BRIDGE SPOKANE, WA

• KPFF designed a new 462-foot-long bridge with a cable-stayed main span that is now an iconic structure in the heart of Spokane.

• Crossing BNSF railroad tracks, the bridge satisfies the need for a non-motorized connection between the University District and a developing city district.

VANCOUVER LAND BRIDGE VANCOUVER, WA

• KPFF provided design services for this bridge that spans SR-14 and connects Vancouver’s waterfront to Fort Vancouver.

• Design and construction took great care to minimize impacts to the sensitive archeological site and preserve all discovered artifacts.

• Structural elements included a cast-in-place curved concrete bridge, sound walls, MSE retaining walls, soil nail wall, and viewpoint overlooks.

THE LINK AT CROWN CENTER KANSAS CITY, MO

• KPFF provided design and engineering of a pair of pedestrian bridges connecting three buildings in the Crown Center commercial complex.

• The shorter bridge is rectangular in plan and 70 feet long; the other is curved in plan and 174 feet long along its arc.

• Architectural glazing allows pedestrians to see through the sides and top of the structures, with a Vierendeel truss used on both bridges to resist lateral loads.

CEDARS-SINAI MEDICAL CENTER PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE LOS ANGELES, CA

• KPFF designed this 150-foot-long bridge that forms a quarter of a circle to join two structures that are offset from each other by more than 90 feet at points of connection.

• Two cantilevered columns provide support at each end of the bridge, which used a closed triangulated truss system to better resist torsional forces.

• Prefabricated in three segments, the bridge was temporarily supported on shoring towers before being spliced together in the field.

KPFF has a large portfolio of pedestrian park bridges that cross ponds, rivers, waterfalls, and walkways and that further enrich their settings.

WILDWOOD TRAIL PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE PORTLAND, OR

• Situated along the Wildwood Trail in Portland’s Forest Park, this new bridge will provide a safe pedestrian connection from north to south over a busy street.

• The 185-foot-long, two-span structure will be framed with a structural steel truss with an eye-catching aesthetic design; intermediate support is an artistically shaped concrete pier supported on pile foundations.

• End abutments are designed to minimize impacts to the environmentally sensitive surroundings and to accommodate limited construction access.

ARBORETUM FOSTER ISLAND FOOTBRIDGE SEATTLE, WA

• Sensitivity to the natural surroundings was key to KPFF’s replacement of an existing footbridge in one of Seattle’s oldest parks.

• The replacement 69-foot-long, prefabricated timber bridge accommodates maintenance vehicles traveling across it and canoeists traveling below it.

• Care was taken during construction to protect the tree canopy and nearby tree roots and to keep debris out of the water.

ROCKY REACH TRAIL BRIDGES DOUGLAS AND CHELAN COUNTIES, WA

• KPFF led civil and structural engineering in extending this five-mile trail—one of the area’s premier recreational destinations—that hugs the Columbia River on both sides.

• As part of the extension, KPFF designed a three-sided box culvert and two small bridges.

• KPFF analyzed all structures for their ability to pass 100-year storm water flows.

TERMINAL 5 PUBLIC ACCESS PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE PORTLAND, OR

• Two pedestrian skybridges, each spanning 200 feet, connect the fourth level of the Portland Airport parking structure to the glass- and steel-covered terminal.

• Both bridges are suspended from canopy trusses using pairs of high-strength threaded steel bars in a splayed fan configuration.

• The bridges are isolated from the main terminal building with lateral loads that are resisted by the fourth-level deck of the parking structure.
