methods Lean Design and Construction Lean is a philosophy that we embrace within our office and promote its use on our project teams. By focusing on processes and continuous improvement, we believe that we are able to reduce wasted effort and improve the quality of our product.
Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) Collaboration is in our DNA. KPFF has always promoted collaboration in project delivery and has been an early participant in the Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) process. Numerous healthcare providers and private companies, have developed and embraced this new delivery model to ultimately reduce overall construction costs by finding ways to reduce time to market, and eliminate redesign and rework during design and construction.
technology Prefabrication With prefabrication, the jobsite construction process becomes the assembly of manufactured products. The benefits to prefabrication include increased speed to market, improved quality control, and decreased waste. Through our experience, we have quickly learned that successful prefabrication requires a reshaped design process that is more aligned with product manufacturing. KPFF has provided structural engineering on a number of types of prefabricated structures, including the following systems: - Prefabricated steel moment frame systems, including ConXtech - Load bearing cold-formed steel structures - Exterior non load bearing cold-formed steel framing - Modular construction for interior pods - Prefabrication of mass timber components using CNC machines
Integrated Steel Delivery KPFF has successfully collaborated with steel fabricators to expedite development and approval of steel shop drawings. The process necessitates working with a steel fabricator in a design assist role and collaborating with a steel detailer to develop a Tekla model for fabrication while the design is being completed. Steel may be procured, fabricated, and erected faster using this method.

OHSU Collaborative Life Sciences Building Portland, Oregon
The Collaborative Life Sciences Building (CLSB) and Skourtes Tower is an interdisciplinary health, academic and research complex that engages students, faculty and community members through a concept of ‘science on display’. It provides classrooms, lecture halls, teaching laboratories, clinical skills and simulation laboratories, medical research laboratories, and two levels of underground parking in four seismically separate structures. Completed on a fast-track schedule, the team employed Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) to achieve the close collaboration necessary to meet the schedule. KPFF staff colocated with the architectural team, the M/E/P design team, and the general contractor in a shared office space throughout design and construction.
