New concrete bent caps were then constructed in stages to transfer bridge loads from the existing substructure over to the new. This approach avoided significant impacts to the existing superstructure, which was in good condition and did not require repairs or strengthening. The innovative repair design saved money and allowed seismic strengtheings to be included on the project. KPFF’s Engineer’s Estimate was within 2% of the average of bidders.
