EM calls for collective response

The Executive Mayor is flanked by members of the mayoral committee and HODs during a media briefing on Thursday, 18 June, at the chamber . STANDERTON - Lekwa Municipality is battling to cope with the high demand for electricity supply and the system is overloaded to the extent that sub stations are tripping regularly as the demand exceeds the 55 MVA contracted with Eskom. To avoid a complete shutdown, the municipality is implementing rotational load shedding. On Thursday, 18 June, the Executive Mayor and his team of members of mayoral committee and HODs invited the local media to address the community about the current electricity crisis and other challenges of water supply and refuse removal. The Executive Mayor acknowledged that the municipality has the obligations to deliver service to the community and in the heart of the service is supply of electricity, water and refuse removal. He said the rotational load shedding has its own challenges including distribution networks which are under capacity and that affects and disrupt the life and planning of households. He cited theft of electricity from municipality in the form of illegal connections in the informal settlements, bridging of electrical metres by some households and to some extend some

business sectors. Following checking of purchase data of electricity by households and business sector, 168 businesses have been found last time they purchased electricity was 2017, 2018 and 2019 respectively while some household purchase electricity for R10, R50 and R100 for a month or not at all. To reduce high volumes of electricity theft, the municipality has started to remove illegal connections in the informal settlements and the process will continue. As from Monday, 22 June, the municipality will embark on inspection of bridged metres in the residential areas and businesses. The municipality will also install electrical meter boxes to 2100 businesses and households. Therefore the Executive Mayor is calling on residents and business sectors for cooperation and collective response to curb theft of electricity. To try and improve the situation, the municipality is putting in place interventions strategies, Short-term, Mid-term and Long-term interventions. For a Short-term intervention, the municipality will escalate the problem through political structures

for government on national level to engage Eskom. Distribute a revised rotational load shedding to the residents. Municipality will engage Eskom to arrange access to remote monitoring of load at their distribution centres, substations A, B and C to enable monitoring of the load and technicians not to run from one substation to another for the purpose of switching on and off. Engage Eskom to establish progress with upgrading of Notified Maximum Demand from 55 MVA to 80 MVA in Phase one and 110MVA in Phase two. Acting HOD of technical services said provision of water supply is affected by electricity outage resulting in the water treatment plant being dysfunctional; all high lying areas are also affected after electricity was off for some time. However the municipality is considering the purchase of an industrial generator that will be a backup to the water treatment plant in case of power failure. Once more, the Executive Mayor appeals to the residents to assist in curbing electricity theft and work together with the municipality to come out of this electricity crisis. David Maretlane

STANDERTON - A 73-year-old man was run over by a truck and his head was crushed flat and he died on the scene. On Saturday, 20 June people at the taxi rank witnessed a horrifying incident when a man was run over by a horse and trailer truck. According to witnesses, a truck was turning to the left at the corner of Mbonani Mayisela and Coligny Street when suddenly the deceased appeared from the right and allegedly went under the horse and the trailer trying to cross the street as the driver was making a slow turn due to a small space. The driver was not aware of the man under the truck, he moved forward and the rear wheels of the trailer ran over him. The driver was alerted by the witnesses and stopped the truck immediately, but it was too late. The deceased was identified as Hezekiel Tshabalala from Extension 6 Vodacom area. Police and paramedics arrived at the

scene and the man was certified dead on the spot. His family arrived at the scene before he was removed by pathology service to the mortuary. A case of culpable homicide was opened for investigation. In another incident, police and paramedics were called to another scene at Grootdraai dam where a passer-by discovered an unknown lifeless body. According to the police, the body was found with multiple head injuries and a rope was found around his neck and covered with a plastic. The deceased was wearing a pair of blue jeans and a grey jersey. A case of murder was opened for investigation. Police are appealing to anybody who might have witnessed the incident to come forward with information and people who might be looking for a missing relative must check the body at the government mortuary. The situation at Mr Jan Moloi’s house, 5375 ext. 4 (ema 9) Sakhile, Standerton) is nothing but inhumane. Mr. Moloi and his neighbours started experiencing raw sewer in October 2019 and it was reported numerous times to the municipality. The municipality did send a truck to suck the sewer from the house and manhole, but that didn’t help. The truck operators, who are contractors, advised Mr. Moloi to call the municipality to unblock it as sucking it alone won’t help. The municipality visited the house on 5 June, but only walked around the yard and promised to come back. The kitchen and children’s bedroom is a river of smelling sewer. That is the same kitchen where the family has to cook and eat. “Can the mayor himself visit that family and see how people suffer under his leadership,” was one of the questions raised by the affected community.

Lack of service may Young father killed spread disease STANDERTON - A 26-year old father of a three year old boy, was killed on impact during a hit-and-run accident on Saturday evening, 13 June. According to information supplied by the deceased father, Ju-Adrian Coetzee was walking towards Standerton between 23:00 and 00:30 after his vehicle was damaged and broke down. Very close to the gate of Heymans Kole on the Secunda road, a Red VW Golf struck the deceased who was still walking towards town. The driver of the vehicle did stop to investigate, but when security guards of Heymans Kole ran towards the accident, the driver sped off. Statements were taken from the security guards by the attending SAPS member, but the driver of the vehicle only went to report the accident on Monday afternoon, where his

statement was also taken. According to information, the driver was not arrested for leaving the scene of an accident where someone was killed. Further information received also stated that the attending SAPS member took photos of the scene and the body and distributed it on social media. According to the father, only the statements were taken and no formal case has been opened. Forensic investigators did attend the scene during Sunday, 14 June. A large amount of cash is reportedly also missing and could not be accounted for. Questions raised by Cosmos News in E-mails sent to the Standerton SAPS commander (was read on Friday, 19 June at 12:51) as well as to the Nasional SAPS spokesperson (read on Monday, 22 June at 07:49:23) went unanswered. JD

Body discovered in River Park

While doing patrol on Tuesday morning, 23 June, an officer from Kasselman Security was stopped by two persons and he was informed that there was a body lying next to the river. Upon investigation, the body of an unknown man was indeed found and the SAPS were contacted. Drag marks found on the scene could indicate foul play. As this is a developing story, and at print SAPS were not yet on the scene, our readers will be kept up to date as information is made available.

From a distance away, this might look like a frozen pond or even snow, but at closer inspection, it is a river of raw sewage spilling from a manhole in Robert Street. This health risk has been going on for several weeks already and no attempt to repair the situation was made by the local municipality. This strong flowing river of sewage flows down the street directly into a stormwater drain, draining everything in the river a little distance lower in the street.

“Here, maak my wat U wil hê ek moet wees.

Residents write about electricity ... ... to air their disgust with Lekwa Municipality and its inability to provide answers or solutions

STANDERTON - Fed-up residents have taken to social media to air their disgust with Lekwa municipality and the permanent loss of electricity supply. Even photos are shared on the Lekwa Facebook page and some of these published letters will be highlighted. Letter 1. Mr. President and Lekwa residents, I write this to you as a concerned citizen to say please Mr. President, practice what you preach and let all the old ministers who are above fifty (50) stay at home as they are more exposed to the Pandemic as per your words and replace them with young energetic ministers who can quickly acclimatize with the advancement of the technology. Therefore we will be so happy to see this done as your fellow South Africans from your cabinet until to the grassroots of municipalities especially our municipality Lekwa, which was once the talk of parliament but to us it seems as if fell on deaf ears. As President you once said “It is within our hands,” could it be rightfully within our hands to elect those who we have faith on and also remove them if not serving the community without the interference of political parties. As we are tired of being looted and mislead under the blanket of political parties we love for certain individuals to enrich themselves forgetting the interests of the community who casted their vote for them. Here at Lekwa different political parties voted against the leadership of ANC but all we saw was a true reflection that the ANC no longer care about the people but only care about few individuals. In short we are tired of the leadership of Lekwa and we no longer have faith in them. Hope it will reach its destination and also be taken into consideration. Regards, your fellow South African. Letter 2 Revolutionary greetings, to residents of Lekwa The Economic Freedom Fighters in Gert Sibande Region is dismayed that during the most devastated period of Covid-19, residents of Lekwa municipality have no

water and electricity. This is the municipality lead by the corrupt Mayor and Speaker who were rejected by their own caucus and later reinstated to continue misleading the residents of Lekwa, simply because the ANC had to avoid looming by-elections which they were going to loose to the EFF, because people are tired of their nonsense. It must be said that, the municipality is violating the basic rights of its residents, in the interest of their own personal and selfish gains. It must be clearly stated that under the ANC, Lekwa residents will never have the dignity they deserve Lastly, the EFF public representatives in council, provincial legislature and national assembly will continue to push for the municipality to be dissolved, and let residents choose a new council that will put interests of its own people We shall overcome, salute... (Issued by Walter Zulu; Regional Chairperson Gert Sibande Region) Letter 3. I feel like this is something every Standerton resident should hear! Each and every one of you! We stay in a town where the government doesn’t care about us! We stay in a town where clean water and electricity is something we don’t have... But I just want to make things very clear to each one of you! It does not matter if you are white black or Indian, all of us are struggling! People in the locations are striking, not because they are animals or they want to, but because they are fighting for what they are paying for. So saying white people have privileges is completely wrong. Where is our privilege? Because we struggle just like anyone else! We have no water just like everyone else. No electricity like everyone else. So stop blaming this on racism. This is not the fault of race but the fault of the people who steal the money of us hardworking people. All of us are working hard. The tax we as a town are paying is going straight for them to buy their fancy cars and build their new houses while we as Standerton residents suffer! This needs to stop. Not later but NOW!

Residents have taken to the streets, burning tyres and blockading the road with stones to display their dismay about the electricity.

Let us please stand together and show them we are strong and not scared of them! Let us work together to see how we can solve this issue throughout the whole of Standerton! We are not stupid we will get through this! But please all races genders and ages must now stand together!!! Letter 4. Several electricity cut offs per day and the cold weather we currently facing, people use whatever in their possession to keep themselves warm and to cook. The number of illegal connections is increasing and the municipality is not doing enough to stop it, Rooikoppen is surrounded by those places we call ‘enkanini’ and most of the people staying there they have electricity which they illegally connected from those staying nearby! The sad part is that you’ll find one house supplying 7 squatters with electricity illegally, and charging them between R100 and R300 per month each, while the owner of the house is not paying a cent to the municipality and s/ he doesn’t buy electricity, it’s bridged... The electricity crisis is far from being over, switching us on and off 14 times a day won’t help until the issue of illegal connections is attended to because once the power is back on everyone switches on heaters and stoves to keep warm. We still going to experience more shack fires and appliances damaged by ON OFF ON OFF.... Letter 5. Hi my name is Martha Tshabalala at 1721 Sakhile. I am 69 year old suffering from a chronic illness. I would like you to help us. We are almost 9, if not more, houses that have no electricity here since Wednesday, 17 June. I have phoned the municipality since then but with no help and no explanation up to today. I took my insulin to my neighbor to be kept in her refrigerator as, since last week, mine has defrosted and my food has spoiled. I am very ill at the moment I must go and see a doctor. How can you help me or advise me what to do in such a situation.

Some residents are trying to repair or connect their own electricity. This is very dangerous and is called “knock-knock on heaven’s door” by some residents.

Vis, dis net vis waar jy kyk
