About a Scarf

When Jen Hawkins was in Form 2 (Year 8) in 1958 she started to knit herself a scarf. Handknitted scarves were often worn at sports events and Jen was a keen competitor excelling in Hockey and Softball. Our original two storey Sports Pavilion had only been opened in 1957 with Archbishop Dr. J.J. Booth stressing the ‘importance of combining physical activity with academic studies in order to develop the complete individual’. Jen was a very slow knitter and had finished Matriculation in 1962 and was completing her first year of Physical Education at the University of Melbourne before she decided to continue knitting and complete her scarf in Korowa colours. Jen’s scarf has finally found a home in our archival collection of sporting memorabilia as we watch our new Sports and Wellbeing Centre taking shape throughout this year.

Looking Back at Junior Sport

Sandra Chambers was a Prep 4 (Year 4) girl in the 1962 Junior School Sports and she has donated a set of images of the teams on the oval. In the top image, the original Sports Pavilion can be seen in the background as well as the former Art and Craft centre which made way for our first swimming pool and enlarged gymnasium in 1985.
