As it was for all students, 2020 was a challenge for our Year 6 girls. The traditional rites of passage were not quite the same, and the learning experience was completely different.

Despite these challenges, they remained positive and embraced remote learning with resilience and determination. They developed the technological skills to thrive in an online forum, and many developed a deeper understanding of their learning style and how to best use their time and skill set to suit their individual needs. Teachers embraced students taking ownership of aspects of learning, communicating via TEAMS and OneNote with peers and staff. Social and emotional needs were closely monitored through Circle time, Pulse surveys and daily touch points as staff and students discussed how everyone was feeling. Many girls have reflected on their time together with their family, and upon their return mentioned they missed aspects of being at home. I wonder which family rituals may be retained? The Year 6 girls found ways to stay connected and give back to the Junior School, whether it was Sport and STEAM challenges, House activities and days, the virtual choir or talent quests. When returning to campus, the girls’ faces were full of delight. The joy of exploring the new playground, reconnecting with their friends and teachers was evident. Many girls have grown and matured over their time at home, and so too has their independence. Many more are walking or riding to and from school and often walking up with our younger students, saying hello and having a friendly chat. Year 6 2020, a year of unexpected times, but one in which our girls have grown academically, emotionally and socially, and displayed a resilience and compassion that will serve them well now they have entered the Senior School.
