As we approached the end of 2020, it became clearer by the day that the year of COVID-19 was not a small episode of chaos, but an event with long lasting impacts on how we live, learn, work and thrive as a community. 2021 heralds a transitionary period that sees something on the way out, while a new beginning emerges. Going back to old familiar ways will not serve our students or community well when what we need is a response to changing times – one where human connection has become more important than ever. Rather than dwelling on what we have lost and missed, we have to learn to deal with complex and volatile situations. Now is the time to figure out what we preserve going forward and what do we reinvent that builds on the best of the past. We encouraged our Year 12 students, the Class of 2020, not to be defined by the events of 2020, but rather by the courage and commitment they showed in the most difficult of circumstances. They are remarkable young people who stand ready to seize opportunity. We admire our graduates and congratulate them on all they achieved and appreciate all they have given Korowa. We are fortunate that our futures are in their capable hands. In this edition of the Korovian you will read about exciting new times for Korowa. Our new River Campus on the Yarra provides a certain future for Rowing at Korowa whilst also adding a facility that can be used for a range of co-curricular and outdoor activities. The Sports and Wellbeing Centre is beginning to take shape in the heart of the school. New programs developed from our Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy will commence in Term 1 2022 when the centre opens and we can’t wait to see the ways this facility will enrich the Korowa experience. This year we have learnt that creating scenarios, trends and forecasts will not, on their own ensure success. Instead we have been able to handle the unforeseen shocks and disrupted environment to emerge sure of our future despite the continued complexity and inevitable uncertainty of the times ahead. We have our staff, students and community to thank for their continued support and encouragement to ensure the success of Korowa and I look forward to great times ahead.
