UKDW Supports DIES IDC Southeast Asia 2022/2023

(UKDW) Yogyakarta is entrusted as one of the Indonesian partner institutions for the Dialogue on Innovative Higher Education Strategies (DIES) International Deans' Course (IDC) for Southeast Asia program DIES IDC is a program jointly organized by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the German Rectors' Conference (HRK), the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH), the Center for Higher Education Management (CHE), and the Osnabrück University of Applied Science and funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) Germany.

Inviting 12 Higher Management experts and DIES IDC alumni from Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) Indonesia, Centro Escolar University Malolo Philippines, CHE Germany, MFU Connexion Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences Thailand, Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences Germany, Philippine Normal University Philippines, Multimedia University Malaysia, DAAD Germany, HRK Germany, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) Indonesia, and UKDW Indonesia as the Speakers, this program was conducted on February 6th-10th, 2023 and attended by 30 representatives from several universities at Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos.
On the third day, participants visited UKDW Yogyakarta to learn about Leadership Management and Entrepreneurial University. In his welcoming speech, Prof Dr Kai Handel, DIES IDC Project Director expressed his gratitude to UKDW for their willingness to be DIES IDC partner Prof Handel also emphasized the importance of innovation in university management. “Learn from others’ experience, be able to adapt, and be brave to innovate. It is also important for introducing a n d p r a c t i c i n g e n t r e p r e n e u r s h i p i n educational institutions,” said Prof. Handel.

Starting the course session at UKDW, Dr. Henry Feriadi, Rector of UKDW shared his experience on leadership and management at UKDW. "Looking at the history of UKDW as the development of School of Theology, leadership at UKDW has always aimed at nurturing vision, developing people, and balancing performance," he stated. UKDW's vision is an authentic view and commitment to fulfill both visionary and missionary calling and the role of the Church in serving h u m a n i t y . U K D W ' s v i s i o n i n s p i r e s institutional as well as individual academic and non-academic performance. Dr. Henry also said that there is a challenging role as a leader. The leader has to be able to act as a motivator, connector, integrator, and catalyst. The leader has to be able to enable the whole system and bureaucracy to move efficiently and peacefully.
T a l k i n g a b o u t e n t r e p r e n e u r i a l universities, Prof Dr Peter Mayer, a Professor from the Faculty of Business and Social Sciences, Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences Germany said that it is important to understand the concept of entrepreneurship and the role of the universities. In his presentation, Prof. Mayer stated that there are 4 important points for entrepreneurs “Entrepreneurs can see opportunities where others see problems Entrepreneurs can live with risks and failures. They cherish creativity and flexibility. And lastly, entrepreneurs have the motivation to excel," Prof. Mayer said. He also shared 10 key concepts about entrepreneurial university ideas such as:
1. The institution acts like an entrepreneur which tries to identify new opportunities
2. An institution allows staff to work in an entrepreneurial fashion and offer professor the space to act dynamically, to be riskoriented and innovative
3. A university tries to foster entrepreneurial thinking of students
4. A university tries to encourage graduates to start a business
5. A university tries to encourage staff to run spin-offs
6. A university applies business principles in their operations
7. A university runs on the basis of commercial terms-study programs
8. A university runs on the basis of commercial terms-research
9. A university runs enterprises for making money: offers services which are adjunct to their original service function or which are considered market niches
10. A university runs enterprises for making money: gets into market niches which the private sector does not find interesting enough
An explanation about universities investing in projects was also informed by Prof. Dr Hargo Utomo from the Faculty of Economics and Business, UGM From his presentation, the participants were reminded why education institutions need to invest in various projects. He stated that university and industry linkage built on the spirit of “Lifelong Learning” and become an organizational need for all “Strong university and industry linkages is a vehicle for realizing the relevance of higher education learning in industry University could strengthen the university and industry linkages for a conducive innovation ecosystem and climate equip with capable human capital to face a dynamic global environment”, Prof. Hargo said.
On the following day, the speakers shared their knowledge and experience regarding Human Resource Management (HRM). As the introduction to HRM and staff development, Dr. Jutta Fedrowitz from CHE Germany and Prof. Handel delivered their presentation about the importance of HRM for universities. They emphasized 10 main reasons why human resource development should be an element of faculty strategy. Prof. Dr Maria Flordeliza Anactacio, Vice President and Dean of Studies of Centro Escolar University Malolo, Philippines provided a fascinating session by sharing about The Human Resource Management Program of Centro Escolar University. She stated how important university philosophy is “The University Philosophy keeps you going. It is the reason for your existence and the secret to success. You have to remember that University Philosophy is the foundation of University quality life,” she said.
In the last course session, Prof. Handel invited the participant to discuss more about steps in the academic career towards full Professorship, steps to improve the salary/remuneration of full professors, and the responsibilities for academic career of the deans. (AI)
