History
1924
The missionary congregation of the Divine Word (SVD) buys the ‘villa’ Eikenbosch in Soesterberg, the current location of Monastery Cenakel.
1925
1939
The Sisters Servants of the Holy Spirit of Perpetual Adoration (pink sisters) occupy the newly built Monastery Cenakel.
1961
The seminary closes. At the same time the congregation founds Kontakt der Kontinenten (KdK) a centre for training and meeting).
1971-1980
KdK receives subsidy for a part of the training work. Until 1980, trips were organized for various target groups, such as doctors and scientists. The course offering is growing steadily.
Start of the secondary school (seminary) and the construction of Mission House Sint Jan, the current Kontakt der Kontinenten.
1954
The seminary is being reduced, because final exam students go to Deurne to complete their education.
1961-1970
KdK starts with preparation courses and refresher courses for missionaries, conferences and student groups of professional education. Over the years, the offering of courses becomes broader and less religious. The management decides to rent out rooms and starts global education courses. In 1968, fire destroyed the top floor.
1981-1990
The subsidy is in danger of being cut back, but KdK is adapting with better-yielding courses that focus more on the business market. In 1989, the SVD left the building and sold the site to KdK.
2001-2010
After the attack on the WTC, the international hotel and conference world collapsed. KdK is forced to make reorganizations and cutbacks.
‘KdK’ becomes ‘Kontakt der Kontinenten’ again. The interior was modernized from 2009 to 2011 and it is paying off. The number of guests is increasing and the target group is becoming broader. In 2011, Kontakt der Kontinenten became financially independent: its fiftieth anniversary was celebrated exuberantly.
2021-heden
The corona pandemic ends at the beginning of 2022 and restrictive measures are a thing of the past. The market for Meetings and Events is recovering and there is more enthusiasm than ever for Kontakt der Kontinenten as a conference location. In addition, the hotel has proven itself as a destination for short holidays in its own country and hotel guests still know where to find Soesterberg.
The war in Ukraine has brought thousands of refugees to the Netherlands, dozens of whom are temporarily housed at Kontakt der Kontinenten. Employees and residents from the area collect clothing to help people. A number of refugees remain affiliated with Kontakt der Kontinenten and are employed at the hotel.
In the meantime, the hotel continues to develop, and in 2024 66 rooms are refurbished.
1991-2000
KdK is increasingly becoming a business. In 1996, for the first time, the conference hotel generated more income than the training work. In 1997, new wings with bedrooms, a lounge, bar and restaurant were completed and the hotel received three stars. In 1999 the sisters left Monastery Cenakel and in 2000 it became part of KdK.
2011-2020
The motto ‘Experience worldly hospitality’ inspires Kontakt der Kontinenten to invest in service, experience, quality and sustainable entrepreneurship. The conference hotel has received the Golden Green Key sustainability certificate and has been rewarded several times with awards. A renovation project started, during which a modern kitchen, a new toilet group and a new restaurant with bar and terrace are being built.
In the middle of the corona pandemic, Kontakt der Kontinenten opens the new building of ‘KonneKt restaurant, bar & lounge’. Despite the restrictions imposed by the government, the hotel manages to “keep its head above water” by, among other things, tapping into a new market and appealing to and attracting leisure guests.

Outdoor meetings
Are you looking for inspiration during your meeting? Why not take your participants outdoor, for a meeting, training or brainstorm session? The combination of fresh air, a green environment and a backdrop of singing birds will add a whole new dimension to your gathering. Being outside also stimulates brain functions and improves creativity, which makes an outdoor meeting an ideal break for an indoor programme.
Our woodland garden has multiple spaces you can reserve for your outdoor break. All these locations are situated within just a few minutes walking distance from our buildings. The reservation has to be in combination with a meeting room and meeting package.
Choose between different set-ups: picnic tables, small ottomans, tree truncs and more. Of course you can combine them too.
Fireplace outdoor break
The most special conversations arise at the fireplace in our forest garden. Here you can end the day in a unique way with your team or guests. Sitting on tree trunk seats and picnic tables around our atmospheric and sustainable Icelander fire table, you can roast delicious marshmallows. Without the nuisance of smoke. The Icelander burns on propane gas, which is the cleanest way of combustion. An additional advantage: you enjoy a smoke-free environment while still experiencing the same warm ambiance.
All over the world, people come together at campfires to share stories, discuss and make music. Think of the Finns who barbecue and warm up around the campfire, the Navajo Indians who tell stories, and the Botswanans who discuss by the fire. We also embrace this tradition and invite you to enjoy unforgettable moments and a sense of togetherness at our fireplace. In addition to the marshmallows, our kitchen provides delicious cocktail cones and there is a filled refrigerator with drinks ready.

Locations for outdoor meetings
Kgotla location
The Kgotla location is inspired by a traditional meeting form, the ‘Kgotla’. In Botswana, tribal chiefs allow all participants to share their opinions during a meeting. Only when everyone has had their say does the chieftain make a well-considered decision.

Palaver location
Negotiating, biting the bullet and making decisions, or ‘palaver’, is ideal at our Palaver location, which is surrounded by trees. Just like in South African countries, where the imposing baobab tree often serves as a backdrop.
Meetings in and for Uganda
Since 2020, Conference Hotel Kontakt der Kontinenten has been a proud ambassador of the Made Blue Foundation. With our Water for Water project, we contribute to Made Blue for every bottle of chilled and purified house water we serve to our guests.
Made Blue then invests this in water projects in countries where it is badly needed. They do so, for example, by constructing water and sanitation facilities. In addition, awareness, education and entrepreneurship regarding personal hygiene also play an important role in their efforts.
WASH & Learn
During an impact trip to Uganda (October 2023), our colleagues René, Mick and Robert saw and experienced first-hand how much impact Made Blue makes. Among other things, they took a look at schools with the WASH & Learn programme. Besides providing facilities and infrastructure, this programme creates awareness, education and entrepreneurship regarding personal hygiene. This includes a strong focus on girls’ personal hygiene as a basis for healthy survival and a better position for women within the community.
The ‘Oeganda’ boardroom
The impact trip to Uganda made such an impression that we want to make even more of an impact. For that reason, a boardroom has been renamed ‘Oeganda’.
We add the net proceeds from renting out the boardroom to our donations to Made Blue. In addition, the Made Blue Foundation organisation may use the room free of charge for their team meetings, as the foundation does not have its own office space.
Team activities
Will you challenge your team with a sportive team building challenge on our event terrain? Or will you get creative, pick up brushes and paint? A brainstorm session in the woods, or a cosy end of the day near a campfire? The possibilities for organizing a team building activity are endless

Sustainable, tasty and enjoyable
Our kitchen chefs take inspiration from ingredients from all over the world and create tasty dishes every day. As a Green Key Gold-certified hotel and restaurant, working with as much sustainable, local seasonal produce is a matter of course for them. We achieve this by working with regular suppliers such as Jimmy Loves Food, the Koekfabriek (‘the biscuit factory’), Farmfields, Schulp, Arensa, Livar, Oranjehoen, Chef’s farm and Kaasfort Amsterdam, each of which has a sustainable or social impact in its own way.
We use sustainable materials such as serving trays made of free-range wood and planters made by Stichting Bouwloods from old restaurant tables. Even the floor in our kitchen is made of recycled car tires.
We don’t just want our guests to enjoy our world now, but in the future too. That is why we do everything we can to do business in a sustainable and socially responsible manner. Actually, it is logical. Because whoever has an eye for the world, also has an eye for the environment. It’s in our DNA.
Our sustainable business operations go further than the law requires. We are therefore proud owners of the Green Key Gold Certificate; the highest possible classification of the international quality mark for sustainable companies within our industry. Curious about our sustainable partners? Then please read on.
Hotels & Meetings for trees
Due to climate change, we are increasingly experiencing (extremely) warm, dry or very wet summers worldwide. Our world needs more forests: for a better climate, more biodiversity and healthy living conditions.
Our guests can make their stay more sustainable and have the CO2 emissions of their overnight stay or meeting (partially) compensated. Hotel guests can skip the cleaning of the room. For every room that we do not clean, we plant one new tree. Bookers of meetings can have an appropriate number of trees planted, depending on the number of participants of the meeting.
Made blue
With our own Water for Water project, we contribute to the realisation of clean drinking water for all. For every bottle of water we serve our guests, we contribute to the Made Blue foundation. Per bottle, we provide 1,000 times more drinking water in countries with permanent water scarcity.
And together with our guests, we will use the ‘Oeganda’ boardroom to make a structural contribution to the WASH & Learn programme in Uganda. See page 26 for more information on this topic.
our suppliers
We are proud of our collaboration with passionate suppliers who understand and support our sustainability ambitions. Each supplier is different and has its own product and story. But each has passion for what they do and an eye for the world.
De Koekfabriek
Have you tasted their cookies yet? They are not just delicious, but socially responsible as well. The team of the Koekfabriek consists of special cookie bakers; people with a distance to the labor market.
Broodheeren
Not just any bread, but bread with character. Sourdough baker Edwin works with honest, pure ingredients from his own soil and is superior in the baking trade.
Farmfields
Good meat from good soil. The calves walk on their own meadows in nature reserves: lands belonging to Natuurmonumenten, the Gelders landscape and the Hoge Veluwe. The crops are incorporated in the calves’ organic feed.
Schulp
Organic fruit juice made from mainly Dutch fruit from the region. Deliciously pure and naturally cloudy juice.
Kaasfort Amsterdam
Artisanal cheeses from Fort Zuidwijkermeer: the perfect location to create a climate where cheeses can mature to perfection at their own pace.
Livar
Livar, the Limburg Monastery Pig, stands for purity and passion. Livar pigs are kept according to an honest concept with the small scale and charm of yesteryear and the guidelines of today. And you can taste that.
Arenosa
Vegetables from organic open ground.
Chef’s farm
Saving land by growing vertically. Because herbs and flowers are grown in 24 layers, a lot of land is saved.
Oranjehoen
Oranjehoen chickens have a good life and plenty of space to scratch around. Oranjehoen’s five stars stand for better living, less CO2 emissions, circular feed, energy-neutral and no antibiotics.
The Good Roll
Tree-friendly and sustainable hygiene paper. The Good Roll’s mission? Safe and clean toilets for everyone; 50% of profits go to projects in developing countries.
Blycolin
For the towels and linen, Kontakt der Kontinenten has chosen the sustainable Pure Eco line by Blycolin. This linen is organic and Fairtrade.
