History
1924
The Society of the Divine Word (SVD) purchases Villa Eikenbosch in Soesterberg, now known as Cenakel. They begin construction of Mission House Sint Jan for a seminary (secondary school).
1954
The seminary is shrinking because final-year students are going to Deurne to complete their education.
1961-1970
KdK begins offering courses for missionaries, conferences, and work weeks. The offerings become less religious. The management begins renting out halls and rooms. In 1968, a fire destroys one floor.
1939
The Sisters Servants of the Holy Spirit of Perpetual Adoration (pink sisters) take up residence in the newly built Cenakel as their convent.
1961
The seminary closes. The congregation establishes the Kontakt der Kontinenten foundation (KdK) for training, courses and meetings.
1971-1980
KdK receives subsidies for its educational work. Until 1980, trips are organised for various target groups, such as doctors and scientists. The range of courses on offer grows steadily.
1981-1990
The subsidy from the government is at risk of being withdrawn, but KdK adapts by offering training courses for the business market. In 1989, the SVD leaves the building and sells the site to KdK.
2001-2010
The hotel modernises its interior. These changes prove successful, leading to more guests and financial independence in 2011, the year of its 50th anniversary.
Following the pandemic, the market for events and meetings is recovering. Kontakt der Kontinenten is proving itself to be a popular venue and is placing even more emphasis on CSR. 2021-2023
1991-2000
Kontakt der Kontinenten is evolving from an educational centre into a successful conference hotel. In 1999, the sisters leave the convent and it becomes part of the conference hotel.
2011-2020
Kontakt der Kontinenten is investing in sustainability and renovating. The hotel is opening a new restaurant and attracting leisure guests during the pandemic to stay afloat.
2024-today
66 hotel rooms in the mission house have been renovated and given a new interior. At the end of 2025, the redecoration of hotel rooms at Klooster Cenakel will commence.

Inspiring meeting rooms
Meetings in “Asia”, “South America”, “Africa” or even in a former chapel: at Kontakt der Kontinenten, your conference room always has a special cosmopolitan touch. It gives your meeting that little bit of extra inspiration. And with a choice of no fewer than 26 different rooms of various sizes, there is always a room that suits your conference or event.
The naming of rooms
The rooms are spread across the former Mission House Sint Jan and Cenakel Monastery. In the Mission House, the floors are named after the continents to which the original residents, the missionaries, were sent: Africa, South America and Asia. The rooms are named after countries on those continents and decorated with worldly photographs.
The rooms in the Cenakel Monastery are named after female saints, whose images can be found in the murals of the Cecilia Chapel.
Trees for All & Made Blue
You can easily make your meeting at Kontakt der Kontinenten more sustainable.
In collaboration with Trees for All, you can offset the CO2 emissions of your meeting. When making a reservation, you can have an appropriate number of trees planted, depending on the number of participants at the meeting. In this way, we can work together to create a greener world.
In addition, you can contribute to our sustainable water project in collaboration with Made Blue, helping to provide clean drinking water in places where it is not readily available.

Welcome ceremonies around the world
Rituals and ceremonies are often deeply rooted in the traditions and customs of a culture. Whereas a cup of coffee (with a biscuit) and a handshake are the norm in the Netherlands, the welcome in other countries and cultures can sometimes be very different. How about brightly coloured flower garlands? Or traditional dance and music?
An energetic welcome dance or folk music may be a bit too much for your gathering. However, with an original welcome, you can surprise your guests and immediately set the tone for your meeting or event. So it’s not a bad idea to think about your own welcome rituals. Do you want a formal or informal atmosphere? How do you get to know each other and how do you put your guests at ease?
We would love to inspire you with these special and cosmopolitan welcome rituals!
Tilak in India
In India, it is customary to greet guests with a tilak, a symbolic mark on the forehead and “third eye”. The tilak is often accompanied by a prayer or mantra that is recited to bless the guest and protect them from evil. It is a beautiful and respectful welcoming ritual that has been practised in Indian culture for centuries, making the guest feel welcome and blessed.
Flowers and dancing in Hawaii
On the island of Hawaii, welcoming rituals are deeply rooted in the culture and traditions. One of the most well-known rituals is giving a flower garland as a welcome gift. These colourful garlands (also called lei) are made from flowers, leaves and shells. Upon arrival, the leis are placed around your neck. They symbolise peace, friendship, respect and love and are seen as a sign of hospitality. Dance performances are also often given, such as the famous hula dance, which tells the story of Hawaiian culture and history..
Japanese bow
In Japan, guests are welcomed with a bow as a sign of respect. This bow can vary from a slight nod of the head to a deep, long bow. The deeper the bow, the more formal the situation and the greater the respect. Women keep their arms in front of them with their hands on their legs and their left hand on top. Men keep their arms at their sides. Bowing is also used to thank someone, apologise or ask someone for a favour..
Welcome ceremony in New Zealand
The culture of the Maori people has had a major influence on contemporary New Zealand customs. It influences the language, art, ceremonies and rituals. The Maori welcome visitors with a powhiri welcome ceremony. The ceremony consists of several parts, including a performance by a haka group with traditional dance, music and speeches..
Dansing and singing with the Masai
The nomadic Masai tribe live in Kenya and Tanzania, among other places. The Masai are known for their striking clothing and centuries-old traditions, including the traditional greeting ceremony Enkang oo-nkiri. This ceremony is held to welcome a guest into a Masai community. The ceremony includes traditional singing and dancing, the exchange of gifts and the sharing of a local meal.
Outdoor meetings
Take your participants outside for a meeting, training session or brainstorming session! The combination of fresh forest air and the relaxing “background music” of birdsong gives your training session a completely different dynamic than if you were sitting in a meeting room. Being outdoors stimulates the brain and promotes creativity. Outdoor meetings are therefore ideal as a break from an indoor programme.
In combination with a meeting room and a meeting package, a spot can be reserved in our forest garden for an outdoor break. All spots are located just a few minutes’ walk from our buildings. You can choose from various setups: from picnic tables or tree trunks to pouffes.
Fireplace outdoor break
The most wonderful conversations take place around the fire pit at the Kgotla site. Here, you can end the day in a special way with your team or guests. Sitting on tree trunks and picnic benches around our atmospheric and sustainable Icelander fire table, you can roast marshmallows in a smokefree environment. The Icelander runs on propane gas, a clean combustion method that provides heat without smoke nuisance.
All over the world, people gather around the fire: Finns grill and warm themselves by the flames, Navajo Indians share stories, and in Botswana, discussions take place by the fire. We too embrace this centuries-
old tradition. Our fire pit invites connection, inspiring stories and beautiful moments of togetherness.
In addition to marshmallows, we provide tasty snack cones from our kitchen and a well-stocked fridge with drinks. Come together, share, enjoy and take home a warm memory.
palaver spot
Negotiating, making decisions and taking action, or “palaver”, is best done at our Palaver Spot, surrounded by trees. Just like in South African countries, where the imposing baobab tree often serves as a backdrop..

Flavored water
Coffee, tea and cookies

Hiking in the surrounding area
There are beautiful nature reserves for walking in the vicinity of the hotel. The exceptionally varied walking routes lead through beautiful forests, past charming towns and villages and impressive buildings. Walk across a former military airbase or through the Soester Duinen, also known as the “Africa” of Soest. And don’t forget the historic castles and country estates. These beautiful locations are also well worth a visit. So put on your walking shoes, because there is plenty to do!
Historic Parc Airbase Soesterberg
This unique location offers a combination of military heritage, art and nature. During a walk across the former military site, you will encounter remarkable remnants of history. There are two different walks within the park: “Munitiepark Soesterberg” (5 km) and “Landgoed De Paltz” (3.4 km), which can also be combined. Good to know: the park is open daily between sunrise and sunset. Due to the breeding season, the runway is closed from 15 March to 15 August.
Clog paths
Clog paths take you past the most beautiful bits of nature and characteristic landscapes. Enjoy the sound of the many bird species that inhabit the area.
Clog path Het Derde Erf (9 km) starts at the historic farm Het Derde Erf on Birkstraat in Soest. You walk through old farmland at the transition from the forests of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug to the meadows along the Eem.
Via Klompenpad het Zeldertsepad (7 km), you walk through the polder, across farmland and along the Grebbelinie in the outskirts of Amersfoort..
Soest
There are various nature trails in and around Soest. The Zoom nature trail (3.5 km) alternates between forest, heathland and small sand drifts. The starting point is in Soest, on Dolderseweg opposite Berkenlaantje. The trail can be followed by the green posts.
The Over Eng en Brink nature trail (9 km) takes you past the oldest parts of Soest. Among other things, you will pass the Eng with its windmill, the Kerkpad and the area around the Oude Kerk. The route starts at Steenhoffstraat 9b, but is also easy to pick up in the Kerkebuurt and at the Windhond windmill..
The Soester Duinen (Dunes)
The Soester Duinen is a nature reserve characterised by extensive sand drifts, heathland and forest. The area consists of the Lange Duinen and the Korte Duinen. Together they form the Soester Duinen. Nature trails created by IVN run through both the Lange Duinen and the Korte Duinen. The Lange Duinen nature trail is 5 kilometres long. The main route of the Korte Duinen nature trail is approximately 10 kilometres long.
The unique landscape makes you feel like you are in Africa rather than in Soest. The Province of Utrecht also considered the area unique, because in 1997 it was designated a Geological Monument.
Pyramid of Austerlitz
The Pyramid of Austerlitz is the starting point for five walking routes through the surrounding forests. The pyramid itself is 36 metres high and was built by soldiers in 1804. On top of the pyramid is a stone obelisk, which can be reached via a staircase.
The walking routes around the Pyramid of Austerlitz are marked with square blue posts with the colour of the route underneath. The shortest route, “Pyramid”, takes about 45 minutes. The longest walking route, “Quatre Bras”, takes about three hours and 45 minutes.
Would you like to take a longer walk? There are a number of other options in the area, such as the 10 km “Forest and Heath Walk”. This GPS route takes you through woods, but also across a drifting sand plain and heathland..
Kaapse Bossen / Kaapse forests
The Kaapse Bossen are located near Doorn, in the middle of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park. A beautiful forest area full of natural beauty. Tip: the “Highlights of the Kaapse Bossen” walking route (9 km) takes you past the most beautiful spots in the Kaapse Bossen and to the observation tower, which offers an impressive panoramic view of the surrounding area. Afterwards, you can relax and enjoy yourself at the Helenaheuvel tea house..

sustainable, tasty ánd enjoyable
Our chefs draw inspiration from ingredients sourced from around the world and create delicious dishes every day. As a Green Key Gold-certified hotel and restaurant, working with sustainable, local seasonal products is a matter of course for them. To this end, we work with regular suppliers, each of whom has a sustainable or social impact in their own way.
We use sustainable materials such as serving trays made from free-range wood and planters made by Stichting Bouwloods from our old restaurant tables. Even the floor in our kitchen is made from recycled car tyres.
We don’t just want our guests to enjoy our world now, but in the future too. That is why we do everything we can to do business in a sustainable and socially responsible manner. Actually, it is logical. Because whoever has an eye for the world, also has an eye for the environment. It’s in our DNA.
Our sustainable business operations go further than the law requires. We are therefore proud owners of the Green Key Gold Certificate; the highest possible classification of the international quality mark for sustainable companies within our industry. Curious about our sustainable partners? Then please read on.
Hotels for trees
Due to climate change, we are increasingly experiencing (extremely) warm, dry or very wet summers worldwide. Our world needs more forests: for a better climate, more biodiversity and healthy living conditions.
Our guests can make their stay more sustainable and have the CO2 emissions of their overnight stay or meeting (partially) compensated. Hotel guests can skip the cleaning of the room. For every room that we do not clean, we plant one new tree. Bookers of meetings can have an appropriate number of trees planted, depending on the number of participants of the meeting.
Made blue
With our own Water for Water project, we contribute to the realisation of clean drinking water for all. For every bottle of water we serve our guests, we contribute to the Made Blue foundation. Per bottle, we provide 1,000 times more drinking water in countries with permanent water scarcity.
And together with our guests, we will use the ‘Oeganda’ boardroom to make a structural contribution to the WASH & Learn programme in Uganda.
hotels for trees made blue
Meetings in and for Uganda
Since 2020, Conference Hotel Kontakt der Kontinenten has been a proud ambassador of the Made Blue Foundation. With our Water for Water project, we contribute to Made Blue for every bottle of chilled and purified house water we serve to our guests.
Made Blue then invests this in water projects in countries where it is badly needed. They do so, for example, by constructing water and sanitation facilities. In addition, awareness, education and entrepreneurship regarding personal hygiene also play an important role in their efforts.
WASH & Learn
During an impact trip to Uganda (October 2023), our colleagues René, Mick and Robert saw and experienced first-hand how much impact Made Blue makes. Among other things, they took a look at schools with the WASH & Learn programme. Besides providing facilities and infrastructure, this programme creates awareness, education and entrepreneurship regarding personal hygiene. This includes a strong focus on girls’ personal hygiene as a basis for healthy survival and a better position for women within the community.
The ‘Oeganda’ boardroom
The impact trip to Uganda made such an impression that we want to make even more of an impact. For that reason, a boardroom has been renamed ‘Oeganda’.
We add the net proceeds from renting out the boardroom to our donations to Made Blue. In addition, the Made Blue Foundation organisation may use the room free of charge for their team meetings, as the foundation does not have its own office space.
