Bang from KRK 2023

Once again, congratulations on your study place and welcome to Lappeenranta to be a part of the most amazing group of mechanical engineering students!
This pamphlet introduces you to our guild, activities and talks about student life. Important faces for you, your tutors for example, are also introduced later in this magazine.
Fresher weeks, i.e. orientation weeks, start on 28.8. and last two (2) weeks. These two weeks are the most important weeks of your studies and university life in general, so don't miss them. During the weeks, you will be given a lot of necessary information about your studies, and you’ll get to know your new fellow students. You don't have to stress about registering for courses or other school related things just yet, as you will have the help of the school staff, your beloved tutors, guild actives and older students once the time to do those comes.
The first year in LUT is a unique adventure that you should make the most of. There will be all kinds of events, interesting company visits, like-minded friends and amazing memories that will keep you motivated to do your schoolwork. We have an excellent student community and team spirit; everyone has like-minded friends here. I encourage you to get to know the student life and the activities of our guild with an open mind and humor!
Your chairman,
- Miikka HuotariKoneenrakennuskiltary, also known as KRK, is the subjectorganization for mechanical engineeringstudents in Lappeenranta University of Technology, LUT. It can loosely be translated as Machine Building Guild. In Finnish technical universities all subjectassociations are called guilds The task of the guild is to promote the interests of its members and making sure the education is top quality. KRK cooperates with the University’s management and the Student Union to make sure students’ voices are heard.
In addition to maintaining relationship with the managementof the program and the university, the guild is a good way to connect with various companies. These connections can, at best, lead to summer jobs or valuable relationships for students, which are a big part of modern employment. Making friends and connectingwith is very importantnotonly to future possibilities, butalso to make yourtime in Lappeenranta more EVERYTHING.
Our guild was founded in 1974 and it has around 700 members. And every year there will be new freshers off which almost everyone becomes the memberof the guild. Togetherwith the studentunion, freshers are guided to become charming‘koneteekkari’ (mechanicalengineeringstudent) Each guild has theirown color, ours is orange, which is also the color of our overalls Overalls are an important part in the Finnish student culture but also an important way for companies to support the subject associations and make themselves visible forstudents. Theseorange overalls, which are known throughoutFinland, are themostvisible emblem of the mechanical engineers of Lappeenranta. .

Healthy! I'm Emil and I'm going to be your fresher captain, i.e. a guide and a light in the darkness. You can recognize me by the orange overalls and an orange helmet. Over the course of the year, I will inform you about events, hang out with you and go to events with you. You can come and ask me questions during the year if you can think of something and I try to answer as best I can. My task is to introduce you to teekkari (engineering student) culture and to pilot you, the new mechanical engineering students.
My journey starts in Tampere. After three years we left to the United States, Texas. We spent a couple of years there and changed scenery again. This time to Hungary. After leaving Hungary, I moved back to Finland, Hamina. From Hamina, via as top at Vekaranjärvi, I finally ended up in Lappeenranta. Now I'm starting my second year here and it's been fun so far! And there's no need to be afraid of older students or other colored overalls. During the first couple of weeks, you’ll get to know the tutor group and your tutors and other older students at the same time. You’ll also get to know the school and all the cool things there, so don’t stress.
Congratulations on your study place, welcome and see you in the autumn!
Emil Mattila Fresher captainThese are the more important faces in terms of starting your studies. This section introduces your tutors by name and face. You have your own tutor group and your own tutor but in case you face any problems, you can ask help from any tutor!
Welcome, incoming students! I’m Aurellia, a student at LUT. As a member of our KRK, I’m excited to welcome you to our vibrant community.
One memorable university experience was making a soapbox car with friends, which turned out to be an exhilarating and laughter filled experience. Beyond academics I also enjoy arts, such as painting and drawing. In fact, one of my passions is nail artistry
Let’s make the most of our time together, embrace opportunities and create lasting memories!
Hello everyone, I am Zixu Lu from China. I have been studying mechanical engineering at LUT for two years. I am glad to have this opportunity to become a tutor, and I hope I can help everyone during the beginning of their university life. At LUT, there are students from all over the world. We help each other and make progress together. I believe we will have beautiful memories together.
Looking forward to seeing everyone in new semester!
Hey! My name Is Thomas Koponen. I’m 21 and I am a second year Mechanical Engineering student. I am Finnish but decided to come to the international side of university, so i can help you with Finnish translations if needed so don’t hesitate to ask!
My favorite memory from uni so far is definitely the tutor camp from this year’s April or the first sauna we held as a guild.
I hope you enjoy your time in Finland. Welcome to LUT and KRK.
Hi everyone! Welcome abroad KRK! My name is Mila, and I’m 19 years old. I am a second-year mechanical engineer student from Indonesia. In my free time, I enjoy playing badminton and traveling. If you have plan to engage in these activities, count me in! As a tutor, I will do my best to ensure you have a smooth transition during your first weeks in this surrounding. I’m looking forward to meeting all of you in person, and don’t hold back if you have any questions.
My name is Rodrigo. I am an international student (from Portugal) currently about to start my 2nd year as a DD Mechanical Engineering Bachelor student. Here’s a bit about myself: I spent my entire academic life abroad in Dubai and Singapore and completed the DP program in Morocco (Casablanca). So I’m used to interacting with students from different nationalities, cultures and religions, which I really enjoy. I am fluent in English and Portuguese. I also speak Spanish and French. I’m a sports guy, from adventure sports to a simple walk or biking with friends. I also like listening to music, watching movies, playing football/rugby, photography and traveling. I’m a car and motorcycle enthusiast, as you can probably tell, so I also enjoy watching and learning about Formula 1, MotoGP, or anything automotive-related. I’m looking forward to hearing from you and getting to know you once you arrive in Lappeenranta! If you have any general questions about studies, the city/university, LOAS etc, don’t hesitate to ask.
Hi! My name is Toms, I am from Latvia and I’m a second-year Mechanical engineering student. I like running, rallying, traveling, fixing and building cars. So far, the best thing about the university is the ongoing project of building our own race car.
Joel RuotsalainenHi everyone! I’m Joel, and I’m thrilled to meet you all! I’m currently in my second year of studying Mechanical Engineering, and I’m incredibly passionate about all things motorsport, learning about the latest computer hardware, and constantly working on self-improvement. Can’t wait to get to know each of you better and support you in navigating your first year! Feel free to reach out and connect, I’m always happy to help!
Do you need a break from studying? Or perhaps a cup of coffee? Or do you just want to hang out and meet your fellow mechanical engineer students? Our guild room is the perfect place for that.
We have comfortable sofas, beautiful decorations and keepsakes on the walls, speakers for music and tables for playing card games or doing homework. And of course, coffee. It is a good place to meet other students, socialize and ask questions if there’s anything on your mind.
You will be introduced to the guild room during your first weeks but you're always welcome to hang out and have a cup of coffee.
The guild's vehicles include downhill cars (forKRuisinKi), a moped and a mostrecentpurchase, snowmobile. These are looked after by our mopo ja mäkiautovastaavat who also make sure to take them out during events.

In addition to the guild’s own vehicles, a group of mechanical engineering students built a sauna in a truck. “Saunapaku” is owned by Teekkareiden Hrrasteprojektit ry but it does a lot of collaborations with the guild.
WHAT!? KRuisinKi is a soapbox car race for the whole family, with no lack of speed! It is held in the Lappeenrantacity centerduring Wappu in April. Some say it's even betterthan the Monaco Grand Prix and why not, it's completely free to enter!
KRuisinKi has two series: the General series and the Repair series. In the General Series, you will compete with the Mechanical EngineeringGuild's race cars, and in the Repair Series you will compete with a self-built car (which is built according to the rules). The race is timed, and the fastest time will, of course, win the race.
If you are not afraid of speed and dangerous situations, and you are mentally ready to step in front of the spotlights, be grilled by the media, be recognised on the street, and of course be the winning racer, then participating in KRuisinKiis foryou. The winnerof both series willhave theirname on the prestigious KRuisinKi trophy!
It takes some manpowerto organize this eventand freshers are always involved in the organization. So now the only thing left for you is to design and build your car for the next KRuisinKi.
Excursions are an important part of the Guild's activities. Every autumn and spring, the guild organises excursions to visit companies and to hear about them Excursions are an excellent way for students to get in touch with companies in the industry and potential future employers. In the autumn, freshers have the opportunity to learn proper excursion manners when the fresher excursion takes place.
The guild can also organize longer excursions, one being the traditional Rankka, which takes place in spring. It lasts several days and culminates to Kirkkarit on the weekend. Kirkkarit is an annual gathering of mechanical engineering students from all over Finland. There are mechanical engineering guilds in Oulu, Turku, Tampere and Otaniemi. The event is organized in alternate years in each city to celebrate our friendship. It is a nice event to get to know students from other schools and party. In addition to Kirkkarit, Rankka includes several company visits and getting to know other student cities.
Each year there can also be few "dress-up" excursions, where you visit the company during the day and possibly spend the evening with company representatives.
Things often happen when you travel.
There are plenty of stories from the kirkkarit, if you remember anything from the trip.
In the spring of 2022, Russia's war against Ukraine changed the lives of millions of people. Compromised infrastructure and food supply undermined the standard of life of every resident, pushing many into a survival-oriented situation.
With the unstable and/or downed electricity and heating network, people were desperately withoutheating, especially in winter, when it gets unbearably cold in Ukrainian latitudes. When our University professor Harri Rötkl heard about this, he contacted our guild with a question: "Do you know how to weld and do you have people doing it?" The only thing to do at that point as people who know how to weld is to accept the challenge and start designing a heater.
None of us have designed stoves before, but at its simplest it is just a box where wood is burned for heat, i.e. a list of requirements:Tank – mandatory, chimney –optional, hatch – voluntary, legs – voluntary, air control – voluntary. Well, there were already cut oil barrels, so we ended up integrating these accessories into this productas well. The design ended up usingplate structures in order to utilise sheet metal workshop of LUT-voima and the 3mm steel sheet donated by SSAB for the construction of the product.
The next steps were cutting and carrying the plates at the sheet metal workshop, welding parts in the welding lab, assembling and packing at the workshop. Of the work phases, sheet cutting and firing of the two largest weld seams were automated in order to speed up the process and minimize manufacturing errors. Well, when done in a hurry, mistakes were made in every single work phase and part.Luckily for us, many of these faulty parts were compatible with each otherand we were able to assemble a few of them into so-called "defective parts". left-handed comb. We still dared to send these out into the world.
The whole projecttook us about two weeks, after which we got our few dozen heaters on pallets and on a truck that was transporting other goods, such as food, warm clothes and blankets, to areas that needed these goods.
It didn't take more than a week after loading the truck when we learned that the sheet metal company Stremet Oy had started manufacturing these KRK heaters with welding companies operating in the area, the first batch of combs was over 200. Soon we heard that the aid fund Pro Ukraina ry had started fundraising "Stove for Ukraine 188€". According to the latest information, more than 2000 heaters have been sold so far, and the need is still great.
Anyone can find the manufacturingdrawings of the KRK heateronline, and the heaters built on the basis of our modelhave now been manufactured by numerous smallerand larger workshops even in Poland. So you could say that with a little effort and action, we achieved something great!
Congratulations on your acceptance to KRK at LUT University! I’m Robin, and on behalf of LTKY, the student union of LUT, I extend a warm welcome to you.
