CHAIRMAN’S GREETING

Hey there, Congratulations on securing your study place, and welcome to Lappeenranta!

You're now part of the fantastic group of mechanical engineering students. You're currently reading our guild's freshers guide, which contains a lot of information about tutors, the guild, and stories from previous years. The guide introduces visible figures within the guild, including tutors.

Fresher weeks kick off on August 27th, and I highly recommend participating during these first two weeks. Fresher weeks are an unforgettable experience, and it's worth getting involved in everything. There will be a lot of information during these weeks, but you can always ask tutors, active guild members, or older students for help.

Your freshman year will bring many memories and new experiences. There's an abundance of events, so make sure to try everything. Company visits, events, and various celebrations provide a great balance alongside your studies. Guild activities also rely on active contributors year after year, so consider joining in.

Welcome to Skinnarila, and see you in the fall!

What is a Guild?

Koneenrakennuskilta ry, also known as KRK, is the subject organization for mechanical engineering students in Lappeenranta University of Technology, LUT. It can loosely be translated as Machine Building Guild. In Finnish technical universities all subject associations are called guilds. The task of the guild is to promote the interests of its members and making sure the education is top quality. KRK cooperates with the University's management and the Student Union to make sure students' voices are heard.

In addition to maintaining relationship with the management of the program and the university, the guild is a good way to connect with various companies. These connections can, at best, lead to summer jobs or valuable relationships for students, which are a big part of modern employment. Making friends and connecting with is very important not only to future possibilities, but also to make your time in Lappeenranta more EVERYTHING.

Our guild was founded in 1974 and it has around 700 members. And every year there will be new freshers off which almost everyone becomes the member of the guild. Together with the student union, freshers are guided to become charming 'koneteekkari (mechanical engineering student). Each guild has their own color, ours is orange, which is also the color of our overalls. Overalls are an important part in the Finnish student culture but also an important way for companies to support the subject associations and make themselves visible for students. These orange overalls, which are known throughout Finland, are the most visible emblem of the mechanical engineers of Lappeenranta.

Benefits as a Member

Members of KRK are able to join the guild’s weekly email list, as well as KRK’s Telegram channel, in which information about events, job openings, and more are provided in a weekly message. All information is also translated to English! Additionally, members of KRK are also entitled to a free pair of orange student overalls.

How to become a Member?

The membership fee is a one-time payment of 20€ and must be paid to KRK’s account (IBAN: FI93 8146 9710 2387 25 BIC: DABAFIHH). Include your full name, municipality of residence, and the word ’Jäsenmaksu’ (Finnish for membership fee) in the payment’s message line. For example: John Appleseed, Lappeenranta, Jäsenmaksu.

Introduction to the Guild Board

The Mechanical Engineering Guild is run by an 11-member board, each with their own role. You'll undoubtedly encounter them right from the beginning of your studies.

The board's responsibilities include:

1. Managing guild affairs.

2. Preparing matters for guild meetings and implementing decisions made during those meetings.

3. Ensuring proper guild administration and enforcing rules and regulations.

4. Handling guild assets and finances—for example, purchasing a snowmobile for guild use.

5. Establishing necessary committees, selecting members, and overseeing their activities.

6. Supervising committees and individual representatives.

7. Compiling annual reports and financial statements.

8. Creating budgets and action plans.

9. Representing the guild externally.

10. Convening guild meetings.

11. Maintaining the guild membership registry.

In other words, the board ensures that we all have a great time!

Hello there!

I'm Veeti Salminen. I hail from a place beyond God's back, a spot known as Kulho. Now, in this context, Kulho doesn't refer to a deep dish for dining; rather, it's a small village near Joensuu in North Karelia. I breezed through high school in Kontiolahti, and afterward, I had to ponder my next steps.

My strong interest in technology led me southward, as North Karelia didn't offer the best opportunities in that field. However, despite the ancient saying that “Karjala (Karelia) never leaves a man, even if the man leaves Karjala,” this time, I didn't need to depart. Despite the move, my beloved Karjala remained close to my heart. In 1969, a brilliant decision was made to establish a technical institution right here in the heart of South Karelia—Lappeenranta.

During freshman weeks, I adopted the mindset of trying everything, even if we occasionally flew home on autopilot. As a fresher, I aimed to attend as many events as possible, despite the challenges posed by the pandemic year.

Continuing my adventures in my second year as a Fuksivastaava (Fresher Captain), I participated in almost every event. Even before starting school, I had decided to engage in guild and club activities one way or another. I applied for the role of Emäntä (Hostess) in the board, later became the Fuksivastaava, and eventually took on the role of Kursiovastaava (Excursion ?Manager)—in short, organizing company visits. Later, I served as the Vice Chairman, leading board meetings when the Chairman couldn't attend, and organized the KRuisinKi event during May Day celebrations. Now, in my fourth year on the board, I keep the carnival running smoothly and ensure the guild handles everything on time.

Congratulations on securing your study place, and see you in the fall!

Hello there!

I’m Eeli, and I’m serving as the Vice Chair of our guild this term. While I was born in Tuusula, most of my 22 years have been spent by Lake Saimaa in Savonlinna, tinkering with all sorts of motorized contraptions—motorcycles, cars, boats, jet skis—you name it. These gadgets and gizmos have been a significant part of my life since childhood, and I suspect they always will be.

After high school, it was pretty clear that I’d become a resilient koneteekkari (mechanical engineering student), and that’s precisely what happened. Following a year-long break at Vekaranjärvi, I chose LUT as my alma mater primarily based on positive feedback from friends and acquaintances. Now, a few years into my studies here, I haven’t regretted that decision for a moment.

My freshman year was quite the adventure, and soon enough, I felt drawn to active roles within the guild. During my freshman year, I served as the moped and soapbox car coordinator alongside Faabio, our former Project Manager. As a second-year student, I took on the role of the guild’s Public Relations Manager, and my third year—my bachelor’s year—has been spent as Vice Chair. Essentially, I assist our Chair, Veeti, whenever he needs help (although he’s quite self-sufficient). Representing the guild alongside other board members (and yes, enjoying a drink or two) is also part of my responsibilities. Oh, and I also organized the most exhilarating event of spring—KRuisinKi!

Make the most of this unique adventure known as your freshman year. I can guarantee it won’t be dull! You’ll definitely run into me at events and perhaps even around campus during the upcoming academic year.

So, without further ado, welcome to Lappeenranta, and have a blast!

Eeli Väisänen – Vice Chairman

Hello there!

I'm Samuel, a 22-year-old lad from the gem of Kymenlaakso—Kouvola. This year, I have the delightful role of being our guild's project manager, or more informally, the “projis.” My journey to these shores began when I felt the irresistible urge to study and tinker with machines somewhere. Thanks to some high-quality propaganda, I settled on the sunny shores of Lappeenranta! When, to my surprise, I was granted a study place, there was no other option but to pack my Volvo and head east.

Early on, I realized that we have a pretty cool guild and a variety of clubs here, so I haven't had to spend much time twiddling my thumbs in my studio apartment. There's something for everyone! I've grown quite fond of guild activities, and for the past couple of years, I've been involved in interesting tasks that haven't run out yet. As the projis, I'll be working with the EmäntäIsäntä (Hostess-Host) sector to organize all sorts of events—from annual celebrations to campfire days—so that you won't spend the entire academic year just studying! We'll definitely cross paths, whether it's during lectures, social gatherings, or at the guild. Feel free to tap me on the shoulder and strike up a conversation!

Congratulations once again on securing your study place. Welcome aboard! See you in the fall!

Hey there!

I'm Joel Takala, 21 years old, originally from Heinola—the cradle of Päijät-Häme's culture—where I tinkered with small engines and rode mopeds. Initially, I considered joining the military in Santahamina, but during my last year of high school, I decided to apply to study mechanical engineering in Lappeenranta. While serving in the military, I received an offer to try out studying here, and I thought, why not? The Military Academy could be a backup plan. I haven't regretted that decision. Guild activities were so intriguing that during my freshman year, I took on the role of an isäntä (host), and now I've continued as the kursiovastaava (excursion manager).

As the kursiovastaava, I organize excursions that include company visits and evening programs. Depending on the length of the excursion, I also arrange accommodations. My advice to the freshmen: boldly participate in everything that interests you. You'll find like-minded people, and don't hesitate to get to know folks beyond the orange overalls. Have a fantastic freshman year! It'll likely be memorable, even if you don't remember everything in the end.

Samuel Mustakallio – Project Manager Joel Takala – Excursion Manager

Emil Mattila – Secretary

Hello!

My name is Emil, and this year, I'm serving as the guild's secretary. My tasks involve writing minutes for meetings and delivering them to the guild room. Despite being 22, writing still eludes me, especially in English. If you spot any typos, feel free to leave feedback—whether it's for the neighbor or the local grocery store's suggestion box.

I've spent most of my life in Hamina, tinkering with mopeds and cars. Now, it's been a couple of years here in Lappeenranta. Back in high school, I had already decided to study mechanical engineering, and luckily, I ended up in Lappeenranta. Now, as I enter my third year, I've had a blast. I've been involved in all sorts of cool activities during my studies, and I wholeheartedly recommend actively participating in everything.

See you in the fall!

Hello there!

As mentioned earlier, I'm Kasper, and I serve as the public relations manager for KRK ry. Let's start with a bit about myself before diving into the essentials: Originally, I hail from the heart of Kanta-Häme, Tammela, where I completed my basic education before moving on to Forssa High School. Besides some vague tinkering, I dabbled in percussion instruments and anything related to internal combustion engines. My longest-standing hobby has been karting, and someday, I aspire to reach legendary status. During my freshman year, I was a bit shy, but things eased up once winter arrived. In the spring, I developed an interest in the guild and its activities by attending board meetings and assisting as a project team member. In my second year, I became a tutor and decided to join the board as the public relations manager. So here we are!

What does the role of a public relations manager entail? Well, what exactly do I do here?! Essentially, my main tasks involve communicating information about upcoming events and compiling content for our newsletter (and another one). I also handle our Instagram account, sharing all the crucial updates and sending out weekly newsletters.

Congratulations on being part of Finland's best study place! Remember to study hard and, most importantly, have fun! And because all good announcements end with a joke: A freshman asked an experienced researcher during their first days at LUT, “How many assistants are there?” The teekkari (engineering student) didn't know the exact number but responded metaphorically: “Well, if all the LUT assistants stood 10 meters apart at the equator, that would be a great thing!”

Kasper Behm – Public Relations Manager

Maxim Kolomainen – Advocacy Manager

Greetings!

A quick and concise introduction about myself: I'm Maxim, 22 years old, and I come from Jyväskylä. How did I end up here in “Rannoille”? Well, during my military service, I received an email saying, “Congratulations, plaaplaaplaa… accept your place in Lappeenranta,” and I did just that.

I'm starting my third year in mechanical engineering, and last year, I got more involved in guild activities—I was a tutor and currently serve as the guild's advocacy manager. My main tasks include collecting course feedback and “analyzing” it. Essentially, I act as a liaison between the study program and

students, and I also keep everyone informed about what's happening at the student union. If you encounter any issues with courses, feel free to reach out to me. We have an awesome crew here, and nobody gets left behind, so don't hesitate to join in. Congratulations once again on securing your study place, and see you in the fall!

Hello!

I'm Sonja, 21 years old, and I'll be starting the master's phase in mechanical engineering this fall. Currently, I serve as the guild's corporate relations and overalls manager. I was born in Vantaa but moved to Karkkila after a few years. When the small-town vibe started wearing thin, I headed to high school in Helsinki. The most common question for a female studying mechanical engineering is, “Why did you choose mechanical engineering?” In high school, I was sure I'd study psychology, but during the joint application process, I realized that my scientific interests could be put to better use elsewhere. Mechanical engineering seemed like the most intriguing field of technology, so here I am! I've been having a great time. My free time mostly revolves around the gym and whatever other hobbies I can fit in.

As I mentioned earlier, I handle the guild's collaboration with companies and the acquisition of overall advertisements. If you know of any companies interested in buying overall ads, feel free to contact me. My goal is to finally get the overalls on time, so if you manage to sell ads, you'll also get a small cut of the sales price. Additionally, I've secured sponsors for our annual celebrations and ordered merchandise. This role allows you to practice sales and communication while getting to know various companies. Congratulations once again on your study place! Best of luck with your studies and see you in the fall! ❤

Sonja Pellikka - Corporate and Overalls Manager

Hi there!

I'm Samu, 21 years old, and I serve as our guild's hostess. Originally from Juuka in North Karelia, you might not have heard of it, but it's famous for Tulikivi stoves and being Finland's poorest municipality. I chose LUT because I was intrigued by the idea of studying in a smaller university in Karelia, known for its strong community spirit and lengthy May Day celebrations. Turns out, those rumors were true!

With a background in mopeds and cars, I've always been interested in machines, so studying mechanical engineering was almost a given. During my freshman year, I attended nearly every event and got to know many people. Eventually, I ended up as the guild's hostess and also decided to become a tutor. You'll probably spot me somewhere in the mix. Being a hostess practically involves organizing events with our host, Johannes, like Tuesday saunas and other guild gatherings—definitely worth attending!

My freshman year was incredibly fun, filled with memorable moments. I encourage everyone to participate in anything that interests them; you'll make friends right away, and there's no need to spend evenings alone in your studio apartment. Welcome to Lappeenranta—have a great time!

Hey there!

I'm Johannes, originally from the heart of Savonia—Kuopio. My journey from Kuopio to Lappeen Ranta began after dusting off my Lyseo studies and completing my days in the border jaeger company. However, I decided to ponder the idea of studying during a couple of gap years while driving a taxi. Somewhere amidst the waves of passengers, it occurred to me that life might have more to offer. So, I applied to Lappeenranta to study mechanical engineering, and on a beautiful summer day, I received the news of my acceptance. The rest is history.

As part of the board, I take on the role of host, primarily assisting the hostess in organizing various events and, of course, ensuring our Tuesday saunas run smoothly—I highly recommend joining those. Congratulations on securing your study place, and welcome to Lappeen Ranta!

Samu Syysjoki – Hostess
Johannes Gråsten – Host

Welcome to Lappeenranta!

Hey there! I'm Martta, the guild's treasurer. My job involves meticulously managing the guild's finances down to the finest details and minute schedules. I moved from Nummela to Lappeenranta in late summer 2021 to start my studies in Technology and Engineering Science. Eventually, I chose mechanical engineering as my major.

Through these life choices (and a few others), I ended up joining KRK's activities and now serving on the 2024 board. But jokes aside, it's been fun, and it's great that you've also found your way here! Get to know people, dive in, and collect experiences. (slay <3)

Excursions & Kirkkarit

Excursions, affectionately known as “kursiot,” are a significant part of the guild's activities. Every autumn and spring, the guild organizes visits to industrial companies. These excursions provide students with insights into production processes and an understanding of how companies operate. They serve as excellent networking opportunities, connecting students with potential future employers. Early in the fall, freshmen learn about excursions during the traditional Fuksikurssio (Freshman Excursion). The content of Fuksikurssio is a closely guarded secret, and everyone must experience and witness it firsthand. We only reveal its duration in advance—typically one day.

After practicing with Fuksikurssio in the fall, we put our knowledge to the test during the legendary Kotimaan RanKka (Domestic Rankka) excursion in the spring. Rankka spans several days and culminates in the Kirkkarit (Kirkastusjuhlat) weekend. Kirkkarit, or the Kirkastusjuhlat, are annual gatherings of mechanical engineering students. All Finnish mechanical engineering guilds—ours included, along with those from Oulu, Otaniemi, Tampere, and Turku—take turns hosting these celebrations, commemorating friendship.

KRK’s rankkakursio in spring 2024 includes a visit to the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant.

Rankka includes not only Kirkkarit but also multiple company visits and opportunities to explore other student cities along the way. Alternatively, it involves partying in cities that might otherwise seem devoid of life—until we arrive, that is! During Rankka, we uphold various traditions and dance the night away on the dance floors of several nightclubs. It's a spectacle you won't want to miss.

Additionally, there are occasional “pukukursiot” (formal dress excursions), where we visit companies during the day and possibly spend the evening with company representatives. A rarer treat is the Ulkomaan Rankka (International Rankka), organized every few years.

During trips, things often happen and unfold.
If you remember something from the journey, there are plenty of stories to share from Kirkkari events.

KRK’s Stoves Project

In the spring of 2022, Russia's war against Ukraine changed the lives of millions of people. Compromised infrastructure and food supply undermined the standard of life of every resident, pushing many into a survivaloriented situation.

With the unstable and/or downed electricity and heating network, people were desperately without heating, especially in winter, when it gets unbearably cold in Ukrainian latitudes. When our University professor Harri Rötkl heard about this, he contacted our guild with a question: "Do you know how to weld and do you have people doing it?" The only thing to do at that point as people who know how to weld is to accept the challenge and start designing a heater.

None of us have designed stoves before, but at its simplest it is just a box where wood is burned for heat, i.e. a list of requirements: Tank – mandatory, chimney –optional, hatch – voluntary, legs – voluntary, air control – voluntary. Well, there were already cut oil barrels, so we ended up integrating these accessories into this product as well. The design ended up using plate structures in order to utilise sheet metal workshop of LUT-voima and the 3mm steel sheet donated by SSAB for the construction of the product.

The next steps were cutting and carrying the plates at the sheet metal workshop, welding parts in the welding lab, assembling and packing at the workshop. Of the work phases, sheet cutting and firing of the two largest weld seams were automated in order to speed up the process and minimize manufacturing errors. Well, when done in a hurry, mistakes were made in every single work phase and part. Luckily for us, many of these faulty parts were compatible with each other and we were able to assemble a few of them into so-called “defective parts". left-handed comb. We still dared to send these out into the world.

The whole project took us about two weeks, after which we got our few dozen heaters on pallets and on a truck that was transporting other goods, such as food, warm clothes and blankets, to areas that needed these goods.

It didn't take more than a week after loading the truck when we learned that the sheet metal company Stremet Oy had started manufacturing these KRK heaters with welding companies operating in the area, the first batch of combs was over 200. Soon we heard that the aid fund Pro Ukraina ry had started fundraising "Stove for Ukraine 188€". According to the latest information, more than 2000 heaters have been sold so far, and the need is still great.

Anyone can find the manufacturing drawings of the KRK heater online, and the heaters built on the basis of our model have now been manufactured by numerous smaller and larger workshops even in Poland. So, you could say that with a little effort and action, we achieved something great!

Soapbox Car Race KRuisinKi

WHAT!? KRuisinKi is a soapbox car race for the whole family, with no lack of speed! It is held in the Lappeenranta city center during Wappu in April. Some say it's even better than the Monaco Grand Prix and why not, it's completely free to enter!

KRuisinKi has two series: the General series and the Repair series. In the General Series, you will compete with the Mechanical Engineering Guild's race cars, and in the Repair Series you will compete with a self-built car (which is built according to the rules). The race is timed, and the fastest time will, of course, win the race.

If you are not afraid of speed and dangerous situations, and you are mentally ready to step in front of the spotlights, be grilled by the media, be recognised on the street, and of course be the winning racer, then participating in KRuisinKi is for you.The winner of both series will have their name on the prestigious KRuisinKi trophy!

LTKY’s GREETING

Hello, future koneteekkari!

First and foremost, congratulations on securing your study place! I'm Simon, and on behalf of LTKY (Lappeenranta University of Technology Student Union), I warmly welcome you to Lappeenranta.

At the LTKY office, you can get your student card's annual sticker, and feel free to drop by for coffee anytime. But that's not all we offer! Our mission is to enhance students' lives through both advocacy and student culture. We advocate for students' rights in courses and lobby for their voices at local and national levels. We maintain an exam archive and ensure that students' rights are respected. On campus, we run Aalef Ltd's Yolo restaurant and a small convenience store called Meidän Kioski, where you can find course materials and more. For further information about us, our services, and our organization, visit our website at ltky.fi.

Beyond advocacy, LTKY plays a crucial role in maintaining and developing student culture, including all things teekkari (engineering student) and student life. LUT has fourteen guilds and over thirty hobby clubs, so you can participate based on your interests. Lappeenranta's student culture is quite unique compared to other places, so I recommend trying a bit of everything initially to find your way within the student community. Our student events are cross-disciplinary, welcoming students from all guilds and even LAB University of Applied Sciences. Making new friends is incredibly easy! LTKY also collaborates with guilds to organize various activities throughout the year, including the famous Suomen Pisimmän Wapun (Longest May Day), well-being weeks in the fall and spring, and many other traditional events. Of course, your primary purpose is to study, but remember that you won't experience another student life quite like this, so have fun and enjoy the journey! Lastly, let's talk about the stunning campus environment. LUT is surrounded by nature, and during breaks between lectures, you can walk a stone's throw to the shores of Lake Saimaa, enjoying the weather and some leisure time.
