RBI’s has their eye on the ball By Constance dwyer RBI’s of Whitinsville, known as the “Home of Storm Baseball”, has several baseball clinics for players of all ages to help them perfect their baseball technique in 3 batting cages. Their primary focus is “teaching baseball.” Owners Dean and Georgette Wagar, a husbandwife team, said “Business is good.” Dean added that their AAU program is noted as one of “the fastest growing AAU programs in the Valley.” There are 6 teams this year, ages 10 and up. Private lessons are provided by the instructors, many of whom teach baseball at the college level. Coach Mark Abrain, for example, is currently the Assistant Head Baseball Coach at Becker College and a former Assistant Coach at WPI; Dan Generelli a Red Sox draft pick (1999), is the Pitching Coach at WPI as well as the East Side Legion Assistant Coach. In the summer of 2012, both of them will coach the “Storm Baseball Showcase Team” for ages l6-l8. There will be 4 Showcase Tournaments, 10 games against competitive AAU teams, and weekly practice. Also there will be video game footage for college applications. Tryouts have already begun. Aaron Kaska and Dave Cecchi are instructors and graduates; also they are 4 year players for Sacred Heart College (Division I) in Connecticut. Another coach is Jason Forte, a WPI graduate who played baseball there for four years. Prior to the spring season, starting this month during school vacation, RBI’s is having a baseball camp (Feb. 20-23). The all-sports camp will be geared towards 8-12 year olds. An ad in this issue, on page 39, provides additional information. Dean said that “Our goal is to bring a better brand of baseball to the Valley and we pride ourselves on the highlevel coaches we have.” His wife added that “Dean and I both have the same philosophy and our work here is worth all the time and energy.” They also enjoy having their son, Tyler, a senior Varsity baseball player at Uxbridge High School, working with them—“He has played for RBI’s for 3 years”--and are pleased his goal in college will be sports management. Their other son, Branden, is a freshman at Uxbridge High. Dean and Georgette, indeed, display an enormous amount of energy, each holding down a full time job besides running RBI’s.
