GREETINGS GREETINGS FROM THE EDITOR:

KELSEY TRAN Hey guys! I hope you are all enjoying your summer break! As the school year came to an end, we had to all say our goodbyes to our favorite seniors. This newsletter is dedicated to all the lovely seniors who dedicated their four years to this club. I’d like to thank everyone who was involved with our Key Club this school year, and I hope to see many familiar faces at our first meeting next school year! Enjoy your summer break, eat ice cream, listen to MadWatcher, and don’t die from the heat. In Love and Service, Kelsey Tran GREETINGS FROM THE PRESIDENT:

EMILY LY Hey Key Clubbers! Can you believe we’ve finally made it to summer? We’ve all survived another year of procrastination and late night cramming, and for the seniors, you’ve survived high school. Although we will not be having any weekly club meetings in the East Wing auditorium for another two months, the officers and I will try to plan a few summer meetings so we can all chill and prepare for any summer events, such as Seattle Rally. Summer will also be a good time to hold carwashes to make our club some extra money so please keep an eye out for FB posts on fundraising business. We won’t have a whole lot of events during the summer time so I would like to challenge you, the members of Kent-Meridian Key Club, to go out of your way to help others or your community whenever you can. Those good deeds could vary from holding the door for a stranger or going to the local food bank to volunteer. I hope you have fun doing whatever you plan on doing this summer break and remember to stay safe. I hope to see you around! In Love and Service, Emily Ly

OBEJCTIVES: Key Club international is a studentled organization that teaches leadership skills from service to others in their communities. It is the oldest and largest service program for high school students. Key Club is sponsored by Kiwanis International.

HOW KEY CLUB WORKS:

1. To develop initiative and leadership. 2. To provide experience in living and working together. 3. To serve the school and community. 4. To cooperate with the school principal. 5. To prepare for useful citizenship. 6. To accept and promote the following ideals:

To give primacy to the human and spiritual, rather than to the material values of life.

To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships.

To promote the adoption and application of higher standards in scholarship, sportsmanship and social contacts.

To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive, and serviceable citizenship.

To provide a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render unselfish service and to build better communities.

To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which makes possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism and goodwill.

Vision: We are caring and competent servant leaders transforming communities worldwide. Motto: Caring – Our Way of Life Pledge: I pledge, on my honor, to uphold the Objects of Key Club International; to build my home, school and community; to serve my nation and God; and combat all forces which tend to undermine these institutions.

PACIFIC NORTHWEST DISTRICT

In the midst of serene nature and fluctuating weather conditions lies the great Pacific Northwest District (PNW).The Pacific Northwest is geographically the largest district of Key Club International. The district spans from Western Canada to Northern California: with Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and the pan-handle of Idaho in between. The Pacific Northwest encompasses nearly 1.8 million square miles and includes over 300 clubs that operate under 44 divisions. Through rain or shine, snow or hail, Key Clubbers in the Pacific Northwest dedicate countless hours to their communities and internationally, and are always Proud 'N' Willing to serve!

ELIMINATE PACIFIC NORTHWEST DISTRICT PROJECT What is the ELIMINATE Project? The Eliminate project is a joint project with Kiwanis and UNICEF to internationally terminate MNT.

What is MNT? In 25 countries around the world, maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) can quickly turn the joy of childbirth into tragedy. MNT kills one baby every nine minutes. Its effects are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. There is little hope of survival. And tetanus kills mothers too.

Who suffers from MNT? What can we do? With just $1.80, you can help save the lives of a mother and her newborn child.

MNT is caused when tetanus spores, found in soil everywhere, come into contact with open cuts during childbirth. The disease strikes the poorest of the poor, the geographically hard to reach and those without health care.

BIRTHDAY: September 13th GRADUATING YEAR: 2014 FAVORITE TYPE OF FOOD: Sushi FAVORITE COLOR: Red FAVORITE QUOTE: "Become a person you would look up to as a child."

IF YOU WERE STRANDED ON A DESERTED ISLAND, WOULD YOU RATHER EAT YOUR LEG OR YOUR ARM? My arms because there was this one video on YouTube where this guy was doing everyday things with just his legs (he was born without arms) and my goodness he was inspirational. IF YOU CAN HAVE ANY SUPERPOWER, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY? I don’t know if this is a super power, but the ability to never miss. Kind of like Hawkeye’s ability. That way I can win carnival games, be the best NBA player and so on LOL. WHY DO YOU LOVE KEY CLUB? See the thing is, I always find a new reason to appreciate this club whether it's the opportunities they give or all the friendships we make. But one thing I will never forget about this organization is the unbelievable relationship that I have established with our Kiwanis advisers. Never have I in a million years would I have expected to become so close with these individuals. Their caring personalities and hilarious humor are just a few things that make them so great. Even beyond Key Club they took the time to check to see how I'm doing whether it's in person or through social media. So I guess one major reason why I love this club is because of all the accepting, hilarious and caring Kiwanis adults we are surrounded by. WHY RALPH? Ralph has grown so much ever since he was a freshman. He was the Public Relations for our club two years in a row, then stepped up to be the Vice President his senior year. He has all the qualities that make up a great Key Clubber, but also an incredible individual as well. He won most spirited in our Division, he has a great relationship with our advisors, and he never fails to be the life of the party. Even though he graduated this year, he will always be remembered in our Key Club. His dedication, spirit, and leadership are all reasons why he is our member of the month. Ralph, you are a fantastic person, and we all wish you luck for what your future holds. Great job and we love you Ralph!

Our KM officers went to Portland this year for Portland Rally: Superheroes of Service! Even though we were the only people from Division 32, we still had loads of fun! We also had a memorable experience when we were at a gas station, and got locked out of Elise’s car. It was challenging unlocking the door with a coat hanger, but in the end, we pulled through it! Portland rally was filled with down to earth and friendly people!
