GREETINGS GREETINGS FROM THE EDITOR:

KELSEY TRAN Hey guys! I hope you all had a safe 4th of July and are all enjoying your summer break! Even though its summer time, there are still volunteer opportunities. I encourage everyone to help out with at least ONE event this summer! There will also be a car wash fundraiser coming up soon, so stay tuned for that on our Facebook page! I hope you all eat ice cream, go to the beach, and enjoy the rest of your summer! In Love and Service, Kelsey Tran

GREETINGS FROM THE PRESIDENT:

EMILY LY Hey Key Clubbers! How are you doing? I hope you are all enjoying your summers. Summer is a time for adventure, relaxation, and fun; so make sure you live it to the fullest! For these next few months, most of you don’t have to worry about homework or exams, which gives you an opportunity to volunteer for summer Key Club events YAY!! Although it seems very far away, DCON is in only eight months. You need to make sure you reach the 35-hour attendee requirement to be qualified to go. If you are still unsure about whether or not you should actually attend DCON, on August 4th you have an opportunity to experience a little of what our District Convention is like. It’s our annual Seattle Rally, taking place at Auburn Mountain View High School; many people would describe it as a one-day DCON. At the rally you will be able to learn more about what key club is as well as experience the high spirits and passion our club members embody. Every one of you members should go, and don’t be afraid to bring your friends with you! Key Club is about making new friends and finding a comfort zone outside of your comfort zone. The more the merrier, I hope you can all make it! Have fun and be safe, friends! :) In Love and Service, Emily Ly

OBEJCTIVES: Key Club international is a studentled organization that teaches leadership skills from service to others in their communities. It is the oldest and largest service program for high school students. Key Club is sponsored by Kiwanis International.

HOW KEY CLUB WORKS:

1. To develop initiative and leadership. 2. To provide experience in living and working together. 3. To serve the school and community. 4. To cooperate with the school principal. 5. To prepare for useful citizenship. 6. To accept and promote the following ideals:

To give primacy to the human and spiritual, rather than to the material values of life.

To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships.

To promote the adoption and application of higher standards in scholarship, sportsmanship and social contacts.

To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive, and serviceable citizenship.

To provide a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render unselfish service and to build better communities.

To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which makes possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism and goodwill.

Vision: We are caring and competent servant leaders transforming communities worldwide. Motto: Caring – Our Way of Life Pledge: I pledge, on my honor, to uphold the Objects of Key Club International; to build my home, school and community; to serve my nation and God; and combat all forces which tend to undermine these institutions.

PACIFIC NORTHWEST DISTRICT

In the midst of serene nature and fluctuating weather conditions lies the great Pacific Northwest District (PNW).The Pacific Northwest is geographically the largest district of Key Club International. The district spans from Western Canada to Northern California: with Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and the pan-handle of Idaho in between. The Pacific Northwest encompasses nearly 1.8 million square miles and includes over 300 clubs that operate under 44 divisions. Through rain or shine, snow or hail, Key Clubbers in the Pacific Northwest dedicate countless hours to their communities and internationally, and are always Proud 'N' Willing to serve!

ELIMINATE PACIFIC NORTHWEST DISTRICT PROJECT What is the ELIMINATE Project? The Eliminate project is a joint project with Kiwanis and UNICEF to internationally terminate MNT.

What is MNT? In 25 countries around the world, maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) can quickly turn the joy of childbirth into tragedy. MNT kills one baby every nine minutes. Its effects are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. There is little hope of survival. And tetanus kills mothers too.

Who suffers from MNT? What can we do? With just $1.80, you can help save the lives of a mother and her newborn child.

MNT is caused when tetanus spores, found in soil everywhere, come into contact with open cuts during childbirth. The disease strikes the poorest of the poor, the geographically hard to reach and those without health care.

IF YOU CAN HAVE ANY SUPERPOWER, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY? I would want to have the ability to fly because then I would be like Superman, don't have to pay for gas anymore (once I start driving), and travel the world! WHY DO YOU LOVE KEY CLUB? First of all, Key Club has always been a major part of my high school life and will continue to be. I first heard about it from Emily, her brother, and my other cousin, Tony. They told me to join because it's really fun and worth it. So I decided to go to the first meeting and continued to go after that. Because of Key Club, I broke out of my shell and became less of an awkward person (I still am). It showed me that I could make a difference within the community, while serving with others with a similar mindset, and how a simple "thanks" could make you feel so good inside. Also, it taught me leadership, which brought me to where I am today, as the club's treasurer for the 2014-2015 school year (and treasurer for two other clubs). Besides leadership, I learned to be more organized, punctual, attentive, and more. Key Club gave me lots of things: another family, friends, memories, skills, and bonds. "Why do you love Key Club?" Why not love Key Club? It gave me so much and made me grow and become who I am today, a Key Clubber, who will continue to serve the community. So, I will work hard as the newly elected Treasurer of Kent-Meridian Key Club by attending DCMs, keeping accurate financial records, dues, making sure we have money for DCON 2015, and whatnot! #D32 #KeyClubberForLife WHY KIMBERLY? Kimberly has been a Key Clubber ever since she was a freshman. She definitely has grown out of her shell through Key Club, but I can see more growth for when she is President her senior year! She is the only person in the class of 2016 that has been to DCON twice so far, with two more to come! She completes her duties as treasurer very well, and has hands down, been the most active member this month! She attended two Kiwanis meetings so far and is planning on going to more. She also volunteered at the PNW Historics at Pacific Raceways, helped with the Adopt a Street Cleanup and she even volunteered at the White River Bon Odori Festival! Way to go Kimberly!

We also volunteered at the White River Bon Odori Dance Festival at a Buddhist temple by washing dishes and setting up. Some of our Key Clubbers are also helping out at the Seafair event in Seattle this weekend!

We also helped out at the 26th Annual PNW Historics Vintage Races at the Pacific Raceways with Kent AM Kiwanis! We helped serve food, set up, clean up and were treated with salmon and chicken! We were told by a Kiwanian, “You guys are the best group of key clubbers yet!
