Dear Klein Family and Community,

The first day of school is rapidly approaching, and I’m so excited to welcome you to the 2024-2025 school year in Klein ISD!

We begin this new school year proud of the ongoing success of our ‘Triple A’ tradition of excellence in Academics, the Arts, and Athletics We celebrate a new record for total student scholarships earned (over $63 million!), earning back-to-back State titles in athletic competition, and receiving national recognition for the 13th consecutive year in the Arts as a topperforming district in music education Our kids continue to succeed and make us all proud!

Klein ISD’s success is built on the strong foundation of our over 7,000 dedicated staff members, supportive Klein ISD parents and families, and the entire Klein, Texas community working together for our kids A key example of this collaboration is the successful passage of the May 2022 Bond, the largest Bond in Klein ISD history, which has enabled our outstanding Klein ISD School Board to approve numerous important projects, especially those that enhanced safety and security measures in our schools

Because we care about our students and staff, we will continue prioritizing safety and security measures in our schools. As part of our mandatory annual back-to-school training for staff, all employees will receive enhanced safety training that will continue throughout the school year This summer, we also launched Klein YOUniversity workshops for parents, covering topics such as digital safety, mental health, drug and alcohol abuse, vaping, human trafficking, educational support strategies, and more Our outstanding Klein Police Department has also been hard at work training and collaborating with other law enforcement agencies, along with adding a new K-9 unit and campus guards at all of our elementary schools Safety remains our top priority, and we will continue to do everything we can to Keep Klein Safe for our students, staff, and community

As we look ahead to the upcoming year, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to each of you for your support, partnership, and commitment to the well-being and success of our students Thank you for all that you do to make Klein, Texas, such a wonderful place to call home!

Corporal Grimaldo interacts with his K-9 partner, Bax, during a Board meeting in June 2024. The meeting provided an opportunity for Board members and guests to meet the new K-9 unit. In the background, Trustee Ronnie Anderson captures the moment.

A New Guardian

Klein ISD is thrilled to introduce the newest members of our Police Department. K-9 Bax and Corporal Grimaldo (pictured above) joined us after the success of our first K-9 unit, K-9 Quinn and Corporal Plummer.

OUR COMMITMENT TO safety

WELCOMING OUR NEWEST KPD K-9 UNIT

Added as part of Klein ISD's continuous commitment to safety and security, K-9 Bax, an 18-month-old German Shepherd and Malinois mix from Poland, comes to us certified in advanced scent detection. His remarkable abilities are already making a significant difference.

"The impact of adding K-9 Bax to our team cannot be overstated," Klein ISD Police Chief Marlon Runnels said "His abilities complement our efforts to maintain a safe environment for our students and staff. His acute sense of smell and agility are invaluable in detecting harmful substances that are otherwise undetectable"

Training is a top priority for K-9 Bax, who undergoes weekly sessions with other local K-9 units and annual recertification to keep his skills sharp. His duties are varied and vital, including patrolling campuses, supporting officers, and responding to incidents where his specialized skills are required

"Being a K-9 handler merges my love for dogs with the challenge of law enforcement, allowing me to protect our community in a unique way," Corporal Grimaldo said.

Their presence not only boosts security but also fosters positive community relations.

While Bax's primary role is as a working dog, he also participates in community events and educational programs, offering a friendly and approachable face to the important work of campus security.

For Klein ISD students and staff, K-9 Bax's presence is a comforting reminder of our commitment to their safety He symbolizes the district's dedication to creating a secure and welcoming environment.

As Corporal Grimaldo aptly puts it, "K-9 Bax isn't just a dog; he's my partner and a crucial member of our security team Together, we're here to make a difference"

The journey of this remarkable team is just beginning, and Klein ISD looks forward to keeping a safe and secure environment with our new K-9 guardian leading the way

Safety initiatives continued on page 6

Klein ISD is excited to announce the hiring of Level 3 Campus Guards at every elementary campus to enhance the safety and security of our schools. With advanced training and skills, our new guards are well-prepared to handle any situation that may arise, ensuring peace of mind for our community

Visitors are required to present a valid ID before entering our schools and district facilities. You will see this sign on all our front doors.

ENHANCING SAFETY AND SECURITY ACROSS KLEIN ISD

Klein ISD is continually enhancing our safety and security practices As part of that continuing growth, Klein ISD Chief of Police Marlon Runnels is conducting a complete review of all internal and inter-agency communications, remaining committed to enhancing partnerships with all law enforcement agencies to ensure student safety

As part of our mandatory annual back-to-school training, all employees will receive enhanced training on safety expectations. Additionally, we will provide year-round training to ensure the safety of our students and maintain a secure learning environment for all

Increased safety measures extend beyond training This summer, KPD officers participated in increased training, including ALERRT (Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training), Firearm Qualifications Training, Bus Assault Training, and Ballistic Shield Training These specialized sessions are crucial for preparing our officers to respond effectively to any situation that may arise on our campuses.

Additionally, administrators are receiving training this summer to lead safe and disciplined schools This training equips them with the knowledge and skills to maintain a safe and supportive learning environment. This training is in addition to Chief Runnels and Superintendent Dr. McGown providing safety updates during all campus staff meetings throughout the school year

We are also advocating for state and federal policies that require school districts to be informed by law enforcement agencies when an employee is under investigation. We can’t act if we don’t know that outside law enforcement agencies are investigating someone

We continue to partner with our community by asking that you report any safety concerns using our Keep Klein Safe website. Submit anonymous tips at kleinisd.net/keepkleinsafe.

Through these comprehensive measures and the introduction of K-9 Bax, Klein ISD remains dedicated to creating a safe, secure, and supportive environment for all students, staff, and the community

Thanks to the Klein ISD Bond in May 2022, the district is enhancing school safety by installing shatter-resistant film on windows and doors district-wide. This protective layer helps prevent glass from breaking in emergencies.

Safety remains our top priority, and we will continue to do everything we can to Keep Klein Safe for the benefit of our students, staff, and community.
