3 THINGS TO WATCH – KLEIN HIGH

SOPHOMORE SETTER: So, it’s tough to step in as a sophomore setter, who is virtually the QB of the offense. But replacing the likes of Camryn Kling and Annie Antar is an uphill climb. Kinslee Smth is growing up quickly and doing a solid job on a state-ranked team with big expectations.

CHEMISTRY, CHEMISTRY, CHEMISTRY: According to coach Kate Zora, the success of this team relies on its team chemistry. There were some tremendous leaders who graduated last season and finding the right rotation is tough with some new pieces. A new setter and defensive specialist are two big holes to fill, but the Bearkats are still the team to beat in the district.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?: Annie Antar has stepped right in as the starting setter at North Florida. She shares the role but is playing huge minutes as a freshman. Right up the road is Devan Taylor, who is starting at Clemson and is the team’s leading defensive specialist in the early season. Also, Camy Kling is the starting setter at North Alabama and Abby Sweeney is in the starting rotation at Smith College.

3 THINGS TO WATCH – KLEIN HIGH

GROUND GAME: With the combination of Myles Arterberry, Quentin Curtis and QB Langston Stewart, Klein High has some bulls running the ball. Coach Shane Hallmark will stay on the ground to wear out opponents and keep the ball in the Bearkats’ hands.

MYLES DELIVERS SMILES: You have to account for Arterberry as a defense. He returns punts and kicks, is the team’s leading receiver, and is explosive out of the backfield as a running back. With a big season and good health, Arterberry may have Klein High going places.

D-UP: Klein High’s strength on defense is the back seven. Malachi Griffiths, Aaron Cooper and Jaylen Ledet lead a solidtackling secondary, while Daniel Moore is an athletic middle linebacker.

3 THINGS TO WATCH – KLEIN CAIN

LOOK OUT FOR PARIS: While Kharys Grice is a talent on the outside, watch out for Paris Dixon. Dixon was a first-teamer as a junior and can dominate the middle. She can take away a team’s best hitter by setting the block. She is imposing and will have a big year.

HISTORY LESSON: Klein Cain reached the postseason for the first time last year after finishing second in district. The Hurricanes beat Cy Woods and College Park in the playoffs before falling to The Woodlands in a 5-set heartbreaker.

WHY SO DEFENSIVE? While the offense is set with Grice and Dixon, don’t forget about Paige Strole and Kayden Creager on the defensive side of the ball. They are all over the floor. Strole also helps out as an outside hitter.

3 THINGS TO WATCH – KLEIN CAIN

QB1: Carson Roper can spin it. He can run as well. Let’s see if he puts it all together as a senior and can make all the right decisions. He threw for 1,800 yards and 13 TDs with 10 interceptions a year ago.

THE NAME? LUKIA: Lukia Rawls is a beast, who is a little disrespected. At 6-foot-1, Rawls was the District’s Defensive MVP as a DT. He has a great motor and can push around opposing OL. What’s most impressive about Rawls? Well, he is headed to play his college ball at Air Force, so his attention to detail in the classroom is immaculate.

MR. BEEN: Linebacker Connor Been is the man in the eye of the hurricane on defense. The senior had over 100 tackles and five sacks as a second-teamer. He’s bigger, faster, stronger and more experienced in 2021 and will have a huge season with Rawls in front of him.

3 THINGS TO WATCH – KLEIN COLLINS

THE YOUNGSTERS: Ashlynn Hollis and Carleigh Schluter are just freshmen who made varsity. According to Price, they are going to get good minutes and will be the future of Collins volleyball.

IN BLAINE WE TRUST: Sophomore Anna Blaine is bigleague. She already holds offers from major DI schools and has a tremendous volleyball IQ. She’s a 6-foot setter, who is a great leader. She might be the most recruited volleyball player in over a decade at Collins.

BOX IS BACK: Brooke Box is all of 6-foot-2 and is a gamechanger in the middle. The Tigers got off to a slow start as she battled injury. Box will be the biggest point-scorer come district and provides the leadership needed for this young group.

BROTHERS POWERS ACTIVATE: Jayden HasanHackney and Jeremiah Hasan-Hackney are the heartbeat of the Collins locker room. Jayden is a bone-crushing LB and Jeremiah moves the chains at RB.

THE BACK SEVEN: The Tigers secondary is loaded with the likes of Addison Taylor, Chris Grant, Leroy Ojo and Ty Armant-Berry. Reagan Schluter and Hasan-Hackney are the LBs.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?: Former Tiger RB Isaiah Spiller has been tearing it up at the college level for Texas A&M. The junior for the Aggies is in the conversation for the Heisman Trophy and was a 2020 All-SEC First-Team selection and Doak Walker Semifinalists after rushing over 1,000 yards.

3 THINGS TO WATCH – KLEIN FOREST

THE WILSON EFFECT: John Wilson took over for his alma mater in a pandemic. That’s a tough time to try and flip the culture inside the Nest of Klein Forest. The vibe is different as he builds his program. The football facilities are top-notch, and he shouldn’t lose athletes from his feeders moving forward.

WATKINS 2.0: Ahmonte Watkins moved in from Louisiana a few years back and now plays for TCU as a RB. Younger brother Jelani is getting some shine as a legit DI receiver as a sophomore. KF needs big plays on offense and he may just be the guy.

YOUTH MOVEMENT: Klein Forest will be forced to play some young, inexperienced athletes this season. Yes, there will be growing pains but it will pay off in near future. Wilson has a plan. He just needs some time to implement it.

HOW DID COACHING PREPARE YOU TO BE A PRINCIPAL?

“IT’S ABOUT MANAGING PEOPLE AND BEING DETAIL-ORIENTED FOR ME. AS A COACH, YOU ARE JUST DOING THINGS ON A SMALLER VERSION THAN A PRINCIPAL. FROM ORGANIZING A TRACK MEET OR BANQUET, TO WORKING WITH PARENTS TO MOTIVATING STUDENTS – IT’S ALL ABOUT YOUR PEOPLE. YOU ARE ALWAYS TRYING TO CAPTURE A LOCKER ROOM MENTALITY WITH YOUR STAFF AND OVER 4,000 STUDENTS EVERY DAY. YOU ARE TRYING TO BUILD A UNITING MENTALITY IN A COLLECTIVE GROUP OF PEOPLE.”

THE GAME PLAN: “Our motto this year is ‘Own Your Puzzle Piece’,” coach Morgan Chinyoung said. “Be accountable, take ownership and contribute on the court while having fun. It’s that simple.”

STEP UP: According to Chinyoung, Gracie Campbell and Kaelyn Langner have played big this season. “Both are taking huge leadership roles and they have grown so much as players in two years.”

THE SLATE: Klein Oak is in a tough district and will battle for one of four playoff spots. “Every night is a battle,” Chinyoung said. “We can’t look down the line of our schedule. HEY COACH: Brandon Carpenter takes over for coach Jason Glenn. It should be a smooth transition as Carpenter has been the OC and QB coach for four years. During that time, Oak has gone 31-15 and was in the postseason every year.

MAD HATTER: QB PJ Hatter is a difference-maker. The junior QB is 6-foot-2 and can run like the wind, and he’s ready for a breakout 2021 season. He had a tremendous playoff game performance against Cy Ranch, showing flashes of brilliance.

GETTING DEFENSIVE: Klein Oak has some special players on the defensive side of the ball in AJ Broussard, Joshua Wiggins (Colorado), Gannon Tullos and Dorian Gates (Vandy). They are going to need to get some stops so the offense can go to work.
