Homo Deus Frankenstein is een muzikaal-filmische beleving voor kinderen en families 8+ rond de ‘maakbaarheid’ van onze wereld/het leven, geïnspireerd op de thematieken in Frankenstein en Faust. Onze samenleving verandert aan een ongelooflijke snelheid. Alles lijkt plots te worden geautomatiseerd en gedigitaliseerd. Tot soms onze emoties toe.

Een heftige maar ook spannende wereld om nu jong te zijn!

Vertrekkende vanuit thema’s in het werk Frankenstein (Mary Shelly) en Faust (Goethe) wordt een hedendaags verhaal gecreëerd, waarbij mens en robot proberen een betere versie van zichzelf te worden. The war of robots, een GPS-route naar ons hart, Frankenstein, op theevisite bij een cyborg. Homo Deus Frankenstein is een voorstelling die leest en luistert als één spannend groot muzikaal beeldverhaal rond de vele inhoudelijke vragen die we ons vandaag stellen: Wat is maakbaar in een jong leven? Waarom creëren we zo graag ‘betere versies’ van onszelf, bv. op sociale media? Zijn we wie we zijn, of hoe wij ons tonen? Waar zit die moeilijke grens tussen kwetsbaarheid en perfectie?

In opdracht van Klarafestival creëerde de componist Frederik Neyrinck met veelkleurige klanktapijten, opzwepende ritmes en dansante melodieën een afwisselende compositie voor (bas)klarinet, fagot, trompet, trombone en percussie die de live actie en video ondersteunt. Vijf topmuzikanten van het ensemble I SOLISTI voeren het muziekwerk live uit. Filmmaker Kenneth Michiels zorgt voor de filmische beeldscore doorheen de voorstelling. Op scène, naast de muzikanten, zien we actrice Marjan De Schutter en danseres Martina Rösler. Regisseurs zijn Johan De Smet (KOPERGIETERY) en Sara Ostertag (makemake produktionen).

Homo Deus Frankenstein est une expérience musicale-cinématographique, inspirée par thèmes de Frankenstein et Faust Faust, qui s’adresse aux familles et aux enfants de plus de 8 ans sur la « façonnabilité » de notre monde et de notre vie. Notre société évolue à une vitesse inouïe. Soudain, c’est comme si tout était automatisé et numérisé. Jusqu’à nos émotions. C’est un monde intense et passionnant qui s’offre au plus jeunes. À partir des thèmes des œuvres Frankenstein (Mary Shelley) et Faust (Goethe), une histoire contemporaine naît, dans laquelle l’homme et le robot se cherchent une meilleure version d’eux-mêmes. La guerre des robots, un itinéraire GPS vers notre cœur, Frankenstein, un thé chez les cyborgs. Homo Deus Frankenstein est une performance qui se lit et s’écoute comme une grande bande dessinée musicale, égrenant les nombreuses questions que nous nous posons aujourd’hui : Jusqu’où peut-on façonner notre vie quand on est jeune ? Pourquoi cherchons-nous tant à créer de « meilleures versions » de nous-mêmes, sur les médias sociaux par exemple ? Sommes-nous qui nous sommes, ou ce que nous montrons de nous-mêmes ? Où se situe la frontière fragile entre la vulnérabilité et la perfection ?

Sur commande du Klarafestival, le compositeur Frederik Neyrinck a créé à l’aide de tapis sonores foisonnants, de rythmes endiablés et de mélodies dansantes une œuvre haute en couleurs pour clarinette (basse), basson, trompette, trombone et percussions, qui soutient la performance live et la vidéo. Cinq musiciens impressionnants de l’ensemble I SOLISTI interpréteront l’œuvre musicale en direct. Le cinéaste Kenneth Michiels fournit la trame cinématographique qui sous-tend la représentation. Sur scène, aux côtés des musiciens, se produisent l’actrice Marjan De Schutter et la danseuse Martina Rösler. À la mise en scène, nous retrouvons Johan De Smet (KOPERGIETERY) et Sara Ostertag (makemake produktionen).

Homo Deus Frankenstein is a musical and cinematic experience for children (aged 8 and over) and families on the ‘manufacturability’ of our world/life, inspired by themes of Frankenstein and Faust. Our society is changing at an incredible pace. Suddenly everything seems to be automated or digitised. Sometimes even our emotions. An intense but also exciting world to be young in!

Homo Deus Frankenstein is a contemporary story woven from themes of Frankenstein (Mary Shelly) and Faust (Goethe) in which humans and robots try to become a better version of themselves. The war of robots, a GPS route to our heart, Frankenstein, taking tea with a cyborg. This is a performance that presents itself as a great musical graphic novel which deals with many of the questions we ask ourselves today: what is manufacturable in a young life? Why are we so eager to create ‘better versions’ of ourselves, on social media for instance? Are we who we are or who we show ourselves to be? Where does that tricky boundary between vulnerability and perfection lie?

Commissioned by Klarafestival, composer Frederik Neyrinck created a varied composition of colourful soundscapes, rousing rhythms and dancing melodies for (bass) clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, trombone and percussion to support the live action and video. Five top musicians of the I SOLISTI ensemble perform the music live. Film maker Kenneth Michiels provides the cinematographic score throughout the performance. On stage next to the musicians, we find actor Marjan De Schutter and dancer Martina Rösler. The directors are Johan De Smet (KOPERGIETERY) and Sara Ostertag (makemake produktionen).

“EEN HEDENDAAGSE, DRIEDIMENSIONELE STOMME FILM” Homo Deus Frankenstein. Een op thema’s uit Faust (Goethe), Frankenstein (Shelley) en Homo Deus (Harari) gebaseerde voorstelling voor kinderen zowel als volwassenen met muziek van de Belgische componist Frederik Neyrinck. Fragmenten van een gesprek met Johan De Smet, Sara Ostertag en Frederik Neyrinck tijdens een van hun repetities in de KOPERGIETERY te Gent. Net als Homo Deus Frankenstein work in progress, een organisch patchwork, een collage, een gewoven tapijt.

Johan De Smet Wat ons gefascineerd heeft, is dat we in onze snel veranderende samenleving erg veel zoeken zonder daarbij te oordelen wat goed of slecht is.

Goed of slecht is irrelevant, vertraging en versnelling daarentegen is wel alomtegenwoordig. Er is een reusachtige digitalisering aan de gang: robots en artificiële intelligentie komen ons leven binnenwandelen en geen van allen kunnen we hiervan de finaliteit inschatten. Ondertussen stellen we zelf onze eindigheid in vraag. We spuiten ons vol met Botox en weigeren te accepteren dat we sterfelijk zijn. Dat is gelinkt aan zowel Faust als Frankenstein.

Frederik Neyrinck Een van de twee performers van Homo Deus Frankenstein staat voor het humane, voor het sterfelijke, terwijl de andere voor de aldoor in leven blijvende cyborg belichaamt die geen sterfelijkheid kent.

Sara Ostertag Een begrip dat de laatste tijd in die context veel valt, is het ‘Antropoceen’, een voorgestelde naam van het tijdperk waarin het aardse klimaat en de atmosfeer de gevolgen ondervinden van menselijke activiteit. Dat woord is ook erg aanwezig in Yuval Noah Harari’s boek Homo Deus. Natuurlijkheid bestaat niet meer. De bodem zit zo vol met menselijke artefacten dat het een ander soort bodem wordt. Dat geldt ook voor onze lichamen.

Zovele zaken – informatie, technologie – hebben hun sporen op ons lichaam nagelaten. Faust en Frankenstein zijn twee totaal verschillende verhalen en toch gaan ze beide over het idee van de mens als schepper, iemand die de leefwereld rondom hem en uiteindelijk ook zichzelf vormgeeft. Een idee dat ook in Harari’s Homo Deus aanwezig is.

JDS Het niet oordelen is voor ons zeer belangrijk. Vroeger, ten tijde van Faust en Frankenstein, is dat wel altijd gebeurd, 9

door politiek, door religie, maar wij proberen te depolitiseren. Op het podium staan er twee wezens die helemaal anders omgaan met sterfelijkheid. Het ene stelt zich de vraag of iemand haar gaat missen, terwijl het andere, de cyborg, daar niet mee bezig is. Mensen vragen zich vanaf hun geboorte af of ze gewild zijn of niet, of anderen hun graag gaan zien en of ze schoon genoeg zijn. De cyborg daarentegen poneert eenvoudigweg: hier ben ik, zo zit het leven in elkaar. I’m visible, I’m very funny, I tell jokes.

interpreteren. Andere machten zijn er aan het werk en er gelden andere regels. Je voelt je tot die mysterieuze wereld aangetrokken. Maar hoeveel kan je van die wereld verdragen? Hoe kunnen we die wereld beteugelen? Je smartphone zou je kunnen beschouwen als een soort van Mephistopheles, met wie je een duivels pact hebt gesloten.

JDS De scenografie van Jens Burez en het feit dat hij expliciet voor een blue key heeft gekozen refereert naar die hele beeldcultuur. Daarnaast spelen er in Homo FN Mijn compositie is onderverdeeld Deus Frankenstein ook videobeelden van in verschillende nummers. Een paar zaken Kenneth Michiels. De menselijke sterfelijkzijn heel herkenbaar, bijvoorbeeld het heid wordt in die beelden belichaamd door gebruik van de hartslag in de basdrum. Dat een 94-jarige vrouw. Zij bouwt een relatie op komt een aantal keer terug en vormt een met een klein robotje. En hoe moeten die twee Frederiks muziek zijn heel fijn en sluiten met elkaar omgaan? Moeten ze elkaar aan bij wat een jong brein meemaakt in kussen? Elkaar vermoorden? Of gewoon deze tijden van digitalisering: zappend, flit- met elkaar leren omgaan? De videobeelden send, swipend. Dat wilden we in de muziek van Kenneth Michiels vormen een tweede vertaald zien. Ofschoon er een dramaturdramaturgische lijn die naast de muziek gische lijn is, mogen met elkaar botsende pregnant aanwezig is. dingen gewoon naast elkaar bestaan in onze voorstelling. Ouderwetse spreektaal FN Muziek voor theatrale scènes versus hedendaagse muziek bijvoorbeeld. wisselt daarbij af met muziek die ik voor de filmbeelden heb geschreven.

hartslag de muzikale dramaturgie is. Dat dit alles kan en mag op de composities van Frederik is fantastisch. Het coloriet dat hij aanbiedt is zo groot, zo breed. We vinden er de ruimte in voor een confrontatie van romantiek en nieuwe muziek.

Een hedendaagse, driedimensionele stomme film. De performers zijn uitgepuurd tot de symmetrie van twee mensen op scène en twee mensen in de film: op FN Ik heb geprobeerd om een heel scène een vrouw die langzaam ouder afwisselende partituur te schrijven voor de wordt en een cyborg, in de film een oude muzikanten van I SOLISTI: een klarinet, een mevrouw en een robotje. fagot, een trompet, een trombone en slagwerk. Onze voorstelling heeft de bedoeling Steeds andere, zodat de meest diverse alle zintuigen aan te spreken, zodat je als kleuren ontstaan. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Faust Faust is zijn leven als geleerde grondig beu. Na een zelfmoordpoging roept hij de duivel aan. Mephistopheles verschijnt en sluit met Faust een deal: met zijn magische krachten zal hij Faust een aantal jaar dienen. Is hij tevreden met zijn diensten, dan krijgt Mephistopheles zijn ziel. Zo beleeft Faust een reeks avonturen, waarvan zijn slecht aflopende romance met Gretchen de bekendste episode is. In het tweede boek van Goethes Faust weet Fausts voormalige assistent Wagner onder andere een kleine mens of een zogenaamde homunculus tot leven te weken. Faust wordt echter nooit oprecht gelukkig en daardoor krijgt Mephistopheles Fausts ziel finaal niet te pakken.

Mary Shelley, Frankenstein Als briljant wetenschapper wil Dokter Frankenstein controle krijgen over leven en dood. In zijn laboratorium voert hij zonder hulp van anderen onderzoek totdat hij er uiteindelijk in slaagt om een monster, samengesteld uit de organen van dode mensen, tot leven te wekken. Bij de aanblik van zijn creatie slaat Dokter Frankenstein de angst echter om het hart. Het monster ontsnapt en wordt enige tijd later in de Zwitserse Alpen gezien. De mensen die hij ontmoet, tonen voor hem geen begrip, waardoor het monster boos wordt op zijn schepper en de mensheid in het algemeen. Dit culmineert in het doden van Dokter Frankensteins beste vriend, kleine broer en vrouw. Daarna vlucht hij naar de Noordpool. Dokter Frankenstein achtervolgt zijn creatie met het doel het te vermoorden, maar wordt in een gevecht zelf dodelijk verwond.

Het monster beschuldigt Dokter Frankenstein en de mensheid ervan geen medelijden te hebben en drijft uiteindelijk weg op een ijsschots in de Poolzee.

Yuval Noah Harari, Homo Deus God is dood, de mens beheerst de aarde. Maar wat gebeurt er als de mens zélf maakbaar wordt? Als we onszelf niet alleen steeds beter kunnen genezen, maar ook ‘verbeteren’? Als homo sapiens verandert in homo deus, hoe zal onze toekomst er dan uitzien? Met Homo Deus richt Harari zich op de toekomst.

Met zijn kenmerkende vermenging van wetenschap, geschiedenis en filosofie onderzoekt hij de dromen en nachtmerries van de eenentwintigste eeuw – van onsterfelijkheid tot kunstmatig leven. Hij stelt fundamentele vragen.

Waar gaan we naar toe? Hoe beschermen we onze kwetsbare wereld tegen onze eigen verwoestende krachten? En als we in staat zijn door technologische vooruitgang onze lichaam en geest te verbeteren, wat gebeurt er dan met de mensen die zich niet laten upgraden? Wat voor sociale gevolgen zal deze tweedeling hebben? Volgens Harari is het essentieel om meer te begrijpen van de technologische revoluties om ons heen, anders hebben we geen invloed op de koers van onze toekomst.

Fragments d’une conversation avec Johan De Smet, Sara Ostertag et Frederik Neyrinck lors d’une de leurs répétitions au KOPERGIETERY à Gand. Frederik Neyrinck L’un des deux interprètes de Homo Deus Frankenstein défend l’humain, le mortel, tandis que l’autre incarne un cyborg, cet être toujours vivant qui ne connaît aucune mortalité.

Sara Ostertag Un concept qui a récemment fait l’objet de nombreuses discussions dans ce contexte est l’« Anthropocène », ce terme proposé pour désigner l’ère où le climat et l’atmosphère de la Terre subissent les conséquences des activités humaines.

Ce mot est également très présent dans le livre de Yuval Noah Harari Homo Deus. Le Johan De Smet Ce qui nous a naturel n’existe plus. Le sol est tellement fascinés, c’est que dans notre société rempli d’artefacts humains qu’il change. Il en qui évolue rapidement, nous sommes va de même de notre corps. Dès la naissance, nous nous demandons si nous avons été désirés ou non, si les autres apprécient notre compagnie et si nous sommes assez beaux. Le cyborg, par contre, se contente de ce postulat : me voici, la vie est ainsi faite. I’m visible, I’m very funny, I tell jokes [Je suis visible, je suis très drôle, je raconte des blagues].

SO Un aspect extrêmement intéressant du Faust de Goethe est le monde des esprits, que l’on peut interpréter comme une sorte de seconde vie. Une seconde vie où d’autres pouvoirs sont à l’œuvre et des règles différentes s’appliquent. Vous vous sentez attiré par ce monde mystérieux. Mais jusqu’à quel point pourrez-vous le supporter ? Jusqu’à quel point, surtout, pourrez-vous le contrôler ?

Votre smartphone pourrait être considéré comme une sorte de Méphistophélès, avec qui vous avez conclu un pacte diabolique.

FN Ma composition est divisée en plusieurs parties. Certaines choses sont très reconnaissables, par exemple l’utilisation de la fréquence cardiaque à l’aide de la grosse caisse. Cela revient plusieurs fois et forme une sorte de couche sous-jacente sur laquelle le texte est construit. Il y a aussi beaucoup de pièces dansantes. Les mesures 10/8 par exemple, qui ont quelque chose d’anguleux. Il y a une berceuse, quelques valses, mais aussi de la musique très contemporaine...

JDS La scénographie de Jens Burez et le fait qu’il ait explicitement choisi un fond bleu renvoie à toute la culture de l’image.

Par ailleurs, Homo Deus Frankenstein présente également des séquences vidéo de Kenneth Michiels. Dans ces images, la mortalité de l’espèce humaine est incarnée par une femme de 94 ans. Elle construit une relation avec un petit robot. Se dessine ainsi l’image d’une société dans laquelle quelqu’un qui n’a plus personne vers qui se tourner jette son dévolu sur un robot. Ce qui n’est pas nécessairement triste : ce peut aussi être beau. Peut-être ce robot est-il plus humain qu’on ne le pense, qui sait, peut-être même plus humain que la personne avec laquelle il est en relation. Comment ces deux-là devraient-ils interagir ? Doivent-ils s’embrasser ? S’entre-tuer ? Ou simplement apprendre à vivre ensemble ? Les images vidéo de Kenneth Michiels forment une deuxième ligne dramaturgique intensément présente aux côtés de la musique.

JDS L’accélération et la décélération dans la musique de Frederik sont très subtiles et correspondent à l’expérience que fait un jeune cerveau en ces temps de numérisation : zapping, fulgurance, swiping. Nous voulions que cela se traduise dans la musique. Bien qu’il y ait une ligne dramaturgique, des éléments qui entrent en collision peuvent simplement coexister dans notre performance.

Le langage parlé à l’ancienne à côté de la musique contemporaine par exemple.

FN La musique des scènes théâtrales JDS Les musiciens sont pour nous de alterne avec la musique que j’ai écrite pour véritables musiciens. Bien qu’ils soient les images du film. très visibles sur le devant de la scène, ils n’ont pas de rôle théâtral à proprement JDS Je vois le spectacle comme un parler. C’est un peu comme la musique en patchwork, une trame dans laquelle le direct d’un film muet. Un film muet tridibattement de cœur constitue la dramaturgie mensionnel contemporain. Les acteurs musicale. Que tout cela prenne forme sur sont « virtualisés » par la symétrie des deux les compositions de Frederik est fantasinterprètes sur scène et des deux intertique. Sa palette de couleurs est tellement prètes dans le film : sur scène une femme vaste. Nous y trouvons la possibilité de faire vieillissant et un cyborg, dans le film une cohabiter romantisme et musique nouvelle. vieille dame et un robot.

FN J’ai essayé d’écrire une partition très variée pour les musiciens de I SOLISTI : une clarinette, un basson, une trompette, un trombone et des percussions. La présence de deux cuivres permet un nombre incroyable de possibilités en termes de sonorités grâce aux sourdines. Le trombone et la trompette jouent en permanence avec les sourdines. SO La musique ne raconte pas une histoire, elle est plutôt la partition chorégraphique de l’ensemble. Elle révèle une grande part de ce qui n’est pas exprimé.

Notre performance vise à faire appel à tous les sens, afin qu’en tant que public, vous recueilliez les impressions alternativement par la musique, par le langage, par les images. Cela plaît beaucoup aux enfants.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Faust Faust est un savant fatigué de sa vie d’érudit. Après une tentative de suicide, il invoque le diable. Méphistophélès apparaît et conclut avec Faust un marché : il mettra ses pouvoirs magiques au service de Faust pendant plusieurs années. S’il est satisfait de ses services, Méphistophélès obtiendra son âme en échange. Faust vit une série d’aventures, dont l’épisode le plus célèbre est sa romance malheureuse avec Marguerite. Dans le second Faust de Goethe, l’ancien assistant de Faust, Wagner, réussit à donner vie à un être artificiel, un homuncule. Faust ne connaîtra cependant pas le bonheur et Méphistophélès ne s’emparera finalement pas de son âme.

Mary Shelley, Frankenstein Brillant scientifique, le docteur Frankenstein nourrit l’ambition de prendre le contrôle de la vie et de la mort. Dans son laboratoire, il mène ses recherches seul, et parvient à donner vie à un monstre qu’il a fabriqué à partir des organes de cadavres. Contemplant sa création, le Dr Frankenstein est cependant pris de terreur. Le monstre s’échappe et est vu quelque temps plus tard dans les Alpes suisses. Les personnes que la créature rencontre ne lui témoignent aucune compréhension. Sa colère contre son créateur et l’humanité en général enfle démesurément. Une colère qui culminera avec les meurtres du meilleur ami, du jeune frère et de la femme de Frankenstein. Le monstre fuit ensuite au pôle nord. Le docteur Frankenstein poursuit sa création dans le but de la tuer, mais c’est lui qui sera mortellement blessé. Le monstre accusera le docteur Frankenstein et l’humanité de n’avoir aucune compassion. Il s’évanouira dans le brouillard de la mer Arctique, à la dérive sur une banquise.

Yuval Noah Harari, Homo Deus Dieu est mort, et l’homme contrôle la terre. Mais que se passe-t-il si l’homme peut lui-même se créer ? Si nous ne nous contentons pas de nous soigner, mais que nous parvenons à façonner des versions améliorées de nous-mêmes ? Si l’homo sapiens se transforme en homo deus, à quoi ressemblera notre avenir ? Avec Homo Deus Harari se penche sur notre avenir. Pétri de science, d’histoire et de philosophie, il explore les rêves et les cauchemars du XXIe siècle, de l’immortalité à la vie artificielle. Il pose des questions fondamentales. Où allons-nous ? Comment protéger notre monde fragile de nos propres forces dévastatrices ? Et si nous sommes capables d’améliorer notre corps et notre esprit grâce aux progrès technologiques, qu’arrive-t-il aux personnes qui refusent toute « upgrade » d’elles-mêmes ? Quelles seront les conséquences sociales de cette nouvelle fracture entre les êtres humains ? Aux yeux d’Harari, il est essentiel de mieux comprendre les révolutions technologiques qui nous entourent, sans quoi nous n’aurons aucune influence sur le cours de notre avenir.

“A CONTEMPORARY, THREE-DIMENSIONAL SILENT FILM” Homo Deus Frankenstein. A performance based on themes from Faust (Goethe), Frankenstein (Shelley) and Homo Deus (Harari) for both children and adults with music by the Belgian composer Frederik Neyrinck. Below are fragments of a conversation with Johan De Smet, Sara Ostertag and Frederik Neyrinck during one of their rehearsals at the KOPERGIETERY in Gent. Just like Homo Deus Frankenstein, it is a work in progress, an organic patchwork, a collage, a woven tapestry.

People wonder from the moment they are born whether or not they are wanted, whether other people love them and whether they are beautiful enough. The cyborg on the other hand simply states: here I am, this is how life works. I’m visible, I’m very funny, I tell jokes.

FN My composition is subdivided into different songs. A few things are very recognisable, for instance the use of the bass drum as a heart beat. This comes back often and forms a kind of underlying layer the text is built on. There are also quite a few dancing parts. Measures in 10/8, for instance, which make it somewhat angular. A lullaby, a couple of waltzes and apart from that, also very contemporary music…

JDS The accelerating and decelerating paces of Frederik’s music are very pleasant and fit with what a young brain goes through in these times of digitisation: zapping, flashing, swiping. We wanted to hear that in the music. Even though there is a dramaturgic line, conflicting things are allowed to exist next to one another in our performance. Antiquated spoken language versus contemporary music for instance.

SO An extremely interesting layer in Goethe’s Faust is the spirit world which you can interpret as a kind of second life. There are other powers at play here and they go by different rules. You feel attracted to that mysterious world. But how much of that other world can you abide?

could consider your smartphone as a sort of Mephistopheles with whom you entered into a diabolic pact.

JDS The scenography of Jens Burez and the fact that he explicitly chose a blue key refers to that whole visual culture.

Homo Deus Frankenstein also projects video footage by Kenneth Michiels. The human mortality is embodied in this footage by a 94-year-old woman. She establishes a relationship with a small robot. It paints the picture of a society in which a little robot is the only source of comfort for somebody who no longer has anybody. But that doesn’t have to be a sad thing necessarily: there is also something beautiful about it. Maybe that robot is more human than we think. Who knows, maybe it’s even more human than the human the robot is interacting with. And how are these two supposed to interact? Do they kiss each other? Kill each other? Or simply learn how to deal with each other?

Kenneth Michiel’s video footage constitutes a second dramaturgic line that is strongly present next to the music.

JDS I see the performance as a patchwork, a woven tapestry with the musical dramaturgy as its heartbeat. The fact that we can do all this with the compositions of Frederik is fantastic. The colour palette he offers is so great, so broad. We find space in it for a confrontation between romantic and new music.

FN I tried to write a very diverse composition for the musicians of I SOLISTI: a clarinet, a bassoon, a trumpet, a trombone and percussion. The nice thing about the two brass instruments is that they have an incredible range of possibilities when you use mutes. The trombone and the trumpet are almost always played with mutes. Different ones every time so that you get a great variety of timbres. The sound of the brasses then mixes with those of the woodwinds and the percussion.

JDS The musicians are genuinely musicians for us. The may be very visible in front of the stage, but they are not given a theatrical role. It is a bit like live music in a silent film. A contemporary, three-dimensional film. The casting is reduced to the

symmetry of two people on the stage and two people in the film: on stage a woman who gradually grows older and a cyborg, in the film an old woman and a little robot.

SO The music doesn’t tell a story in this, it is rather a choreographic score for the whole thing. Much of what remains unsaid is said by the music. The intention of our performance is to appeal to all the senses so that the impressions that come in with the audience vary between music, language and footage. This is very appealing to children.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Faust Faust is thoroughly fed up with his life as a scientist. After an attempted suicide, he invokes the devil. Mephistopheles appears and makes a deal with Faust: he will use his magical powers to serve Faust for a number of years. If Faust is happy with his services, Mephistopheles will get his soul as payment. This is how Faust experiences several adventures of which the best-known episode is his failed romance with Gretchen. In the second book of Goethe’s Faust Faust, Faust’s former assistant manages to bring to life a small person known as an homunculus. However, Faust is never happy and so, ultimately, Mephistopheles doesn’t get to claim Faust’s soul.

Mary Shelley, Frankenstein Being a brilliant scientist, Doctor Frankenstein wants to take control of life and death. Alone in his laboratory, he carries out research until finally he succeeds in creating a monster, a monster composed of the organs of dead people. However, at the sight of his creation, fear takes hold of Doctor Frankenstein. The monster escapes and is seen in the Alps some time later.

He is not shown any sympathy from the people he encounters and this slowly turns the monster against his creator and humanity in general. It culminates in the deaths of Doctor Frankenstein’s best friend, his little brother and his wife after which he flees to the North Pole. Doctor Frankenstein gives chase to his creation with the intent of killing him but is mortally wounded himself in the battle that ensues. The monster accuses Doctor Frankenstein and humanity of having no compassion and drifts away on a ice floe in the Arctic Sea.

Yuval Noah Harari, Homo Deus God is dead, humankind is in control of Earth. But what happens if humankind itself becomes manufacturable? If we manage not only to learn better healing methods but also to ‘improve’ ourselves? If Homo sapiens becomes Homo deus, what will our future look like then? With Homo Deus, Harari look towards the future. With this characteristic mix of science, history and philosophy, he looks into the dreams and nightmares of the twenty-first century ranging from mortality to artificial life. He asks fundamental questions. Where are we heading? How do we protect our vulnerable world against our own destructive forces? And if we are capable of improving our body and spirit, what happens to the people who weren’t on the receiving end of an upgrade? What will be the social consequences of such a divide? Harari believes it is essential to understand more of the technological revolutions happening around us if we don’t want to lose control of where our future is going.

Kenneth Michiels | video Kenneth Michiels is een Vlaamse regisseur en filmmaker die in 2011 zijn regieopleiding afrondde aan het Gentse KASK. Zijn afstudeerproject Eenentwintig + zeven bezorgde hem meteen een VAF Wildcard waarmee hij zijn volgende film kon maken. In 2016 maakte hij de documentaire L’ Etranger over de Senegalese Moussa die coach wordt van de Brusselse voetbalclub BX, een sociaal-sportief project van Vincent Kompany. Daarnaast werkt hij ook als freelance filmmaker/videographer voor VRT en KVS en verzorgt hij regelmatig de videobeelden voor KOPERGIETERYproducties, waaronder de internationale dansvoorstelling 9 (coproductie Cas Public) en Verdwaald. Classical music with a creative twist. What 30 years ago began as a traditional wind octet grew, under the direction of Francis Pollet, into an internationally recognised all-round music ensemble. One constant in the ensemble’s activities is offering opportunities to young talented artists and adventurous projects that involve opera and music theatre. I SOLISTI brings together top musicians, all of whom have built up solid reputations as musicians. A permanent core of 25 musicians is expanded or reduced depending on the project. The spectrum of these projects is unique in its diversity and covers everything from large orchestral works, intimate chamber music and surprising music theatre for young and old to supporting young musical and compositional talent with I SOLISTI ACADEMY and releasing exciting recordings with the label I SOLISTI RECORDS. The ensemble, in residence at the Antwerp Conservatoire and campus resident at deSingel international arts campus, receives structural support from the Flemish Government.
