Klarafestival en Flagey vieren Beethovens 250ste verjaardag met een uitvoering van diens integrale strijkkwartetten door het Catalaanse topkwartet Cuarteto Casals. Beethoven — ‘s werelds meest gespeelde en best gekende klassieke componist — is een van de belangrijkste ambassadeurs van de Europese cultuur. Als kunstenaar verlegde hij niet alleen de grenzen van de muziek maar stelde hij ook steeds weer de samenleving in vraag.

De biografie van Beethoven wordt gekenmerkt door zowel extreme hoogten als extreme laagten: zijn opvliegend karakter, zijn problematische relaties met vrouwen, zijn alsmaar toenemende slechthorendheid en zijn uiteindelijke doofheid zorgden voor een uiterst woelig, getormenteerd leven. De strijkkwartetten die Beethoven componeerde, vormen hiervan de seismografen. Dat Beethoven een inspiratiebron is voor zovele mensen, ligt voor een groot deel aan zijn capaciteit om de extremen van zijn leven, de Glitter & Doom, te sublimeren in composities die hun gelijke niet kennen. Welke tegenslagen hij ook ontmoette, Beethoven slaagde erin om er kracht uit te putten en ze om te zetten in visionaire muziek.

Op de hiernavolgende pagina’s komt Cuarteto Casals zelf aan het woord. Altviolist Jonathan Brown vertelt in korte citaten hoe ze Beethovens 17 strijkkwartetten in 6 concerten hebben ondergebracht, geeft uitleg bij de hedendaagse componisten die in dialoog met Beethovens muziek nieuw werk componeerden en licht in een interview toe hoe kwartetmuziek functioneert.

Le Klarafestival et Flagey célèbrent le 250e anniversaire de Beethoven avec une interprétation de l’intégrale de ses quatuors à cordes par l’excellent quatuor catalan Cuarteto Casals. Beethoven — un des compositeurs classiques les plus joués et les plus populaires — est un des plus grands ambassadeurs de la culture européenne. En tant qu’artiste, il a non seulement repoussé les limites de la musique mais il a également remis en question la société en permanence.

La biographie de Beethoven se caractérise par des extrêmes, dans les hauts comme dans les bas : son caractère irascible, ses relations problématiques avec les femmes, ses difficultés d’audition croissantes et finalement sa surdité, ont rendu sa vie particulièrement tumultueuse et tourmentée. Les quatuors à cordes qu’il a composés en sont les sismographes. Le fait que Beethoven constitue une source d’inspiration pour un si grand nombre de personnes est en grande partie dû à sa capacité à sublimer les extrêmes de sa vie, le « Glitter & Doom » (grandeur et décadence), dans des compositions sans égales. Quelles que soient les épreuves auxquelles il était confronté, Beethoven est parvenu à y puiser une force et à traduire celle-ci en une musique visionnaire.

Nous donnons la parole au Cuarteto Casals dans les pages qui suivent. À travers de courtes citations, l’altiste Jonathan Brown raconte comment l’ensemble a réuni les 17 quatuors à cordes de Beethoven en 6 concerts, décrit le travail des compositeurs contemporains qui ont créé de nouvelles œuvres en dialogue avec la musique de Beethoven, et explique dans une interview le fonctionnement des quatuors à cordes.

Klarafestival and Flagey celebrate Beethoven’s 250th birthday with a performance of his complete string quartets by the elite Catalan quartet Cuarteto Casals. Beethoven — the most-played and best-known classical composer in the world — is among the most important ambassadors of European culture. As an artist, he not only pushed the boundaries of music but also questioned society.

Beethoven’s biography is characterised by both extreme highs and extreme lows: his volatile character, his problematic relationships with women, his declining power of hearing and ultimate deafness made for an extremely turbulent and tormented life. The string quartets that Beethoven composed form the seismographs of this. The fact that Beethoven is a source of inspiration for so many is largely due to his capacity for sublimating the extremes of his life — the Glitter and Doom — into compositions that are unsurpassed. No matter the obstacles he encountered, Beethoven found a way to draw strength from them and turn them into visionary music.

On the following pages, we hear from Cuarteto Casals themselves. Violist Jonathan Brown explains in brief quotes how they fit Beethoven’s 17 string quartets into 6 concerts, discusses the modern composers who have composed new work in dialogue with Beethoven’s music, and sheds light on how quartets function in an interview.

“Beethoven’s string quartets have long cast a shadow over Western European composition, not only in the realm of chamber music, but across all genres. While the compositional lineages radiating outward from this great body of work are easy to trace in Northern Europe, we have chosen to explore less evident paths of composition, examining Beethoven anew from a contemporary, Mediterranean perspective. In conjunction with six major concert halls, Cuarteto Casals is commissioning six composers from countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea, asking each to reflect or comment upon a given program in our Beethoven cycle with a short work illuminating a specific feature of each grouping. We have organised the 17 quartets thematically, although have placed no limits on what each composer will choose to explore; while we hope to collaborate with each composer in his compositional process, no parameters will be predetermined. We have chosen six very different composers, demonstrating a wide range of compositional practice, thinking carefully about which one might have the most to say about each programme.”

BEETHOVEN OPNIEUW BELICHT een essay door Jonathan Brown Een strijkkwartet van Beethoven beluisteren, betekent geconfronteerd worden met de meest tegenstrijdige emoties. Emoties die daarenboven, wat hun diepte en dramatische reikwijdte betreft, in de klassieke traditie hun gelijke niet vinden. Van meet af aan werpt Beethoven ons de handschoen toe: is het zwierige gebaar aan het begin van Op. 18/1 wel een echt muzikaal motief?

Of is dit eerder als grap bedoeld, net zoals de openingsmaten van enkele strijkkwartetten van Haydn, Beethovens mentor?

Dankzij wetenschappers, die Beethovens notitieschriften hebben onderzocht, weten we nu dat er achter dit zwierige gebaar veel werk schuilt: Beethoven maakte vele schetsen voordat hij er uiteindelijk mee tevreden was. Laat het obsessieve vijlen aan een paar noten zich verklaren door Beethovens gave om schijnbaar onverzoenbare en zelfs tegengestelde emoties in een enkele maat samen te vatten? Verderop in de beweging wordt het motiefje blootgesteld aan de elementen van Beethovens verbeelding: het wordt in de meest verschillende harmonieën gegoten, uit elkaar gescheurd, verdraaid en metrisch gedeconstrueerd. Maar wat is de oplossing die Beethoven aanreikt als

de beweging zijn dramatisch hoogtepunt bereikt? Een ontwijken van het noodlot: een raadselachtig, uitstervend pianissimo.

Als een kwartet goed wordt uitgevoerd, ziet het spel van de muzikanten er eenvoudig en bijna vanzelfsprekend uit: men ademt en beweegt als één wezen met acht armen. Toch schuilt zelfs achter de meest eenvoudige beweging jaren werk, discussie en een gedeeld verleden.

Wat moet er gebeuren opdat vier mensen op hetzelfde moment op dezelfde manier een noot aanstrijken? Vier individuen moeten samen ademen — niet simultaan, maar met dezelfde intensiteit en dezelfde beweging suggererend. Geen twee mensen hebben echter hetzelfde metabolisme, laat staan vier. Wat snel lijkt voor de ene, is tergend traag voor de andere.

Aan het inhaleren gaat een voorbereidend gebaar met de armen en de handen vooraf. Daarbij heeft elk zijn eigen gewoontes, ontwikkeld gedurende jarenlange praxis. Bovendien moet dezelfde noot op vier erg verschillende instrumenten geproduceerd worden en zelfs op hetzelfde instrument klinkt dezelfde noot gespeeld op een andere snaar licht anders. Jaren oefening opdat een 20

‘eenvoudig’ motiefje de complexiteit van zijn totstandbrenging niet zou verraden: dat is het werk van een strijkkwartet.

Welke betekenislagen liggen verborgen achter een schijnbaar eenvoudig gebaar in Beethovens muziek? De openingszin van het Adagio van Op. 18/2 eindigt met een zuchtend, recitatiefachtig viernotenmotief. Nog voor de cadens goed en wel gedaan is, wordt het motiefje opgepikt door de eerste viool en verandert het in een wervelende dans, gespeeld door alle vier de instrumenten. Niets is heilig in Beethovens muziek, geen ‘Affekt’ is compleet zonder de onthulling dat het de kiem van zijn tegengestelde in zich draagt. Muzikanten die Beethoven kenden, tekenden op dat Beethoven onevenaarbaar was in het improviseren: het meest banale muzikale materiaal kon hij in iets subliems veranderen. Maar op het moment dat hij zag dat zijn luisteraars tot tranen toe werden bewogen, beëindigde hij zijn improvisaties met cliché fortissimo finales, alsof hij wou zeggen: “zie jullie daar staan, dit was uiteindelijk slechts een grap”.

Toen de 27-jarige Beethoven zijn eerste reeks strijkkwartetten Op. 18 componeerde, liet hij zich inspireren door een van de meest sublieme werken die de westerse kunstgeschiedenis heeft voortgebracht. Uit zijn schetsboeken kan men opmaken dat de trage beweging van Op. 18/1 werd geïnspireerd door de grafscène van Shakespeares tragedie Romeo and Juliet. Hij geeft zelfs aan welke muzikale figuren corresponderen met de laatste ademteugen van de protagonisten en op welk moment de twee jonge geliefden hun leven beëindigen. Boven de finale van Op. 18/6 schrijft hij de titel La Malinconia – het begin van een reeks

betekeniszwangere titels. Hier refereert Beethoven naar de gelijknamige ets van Albrecht Dürer, zelf het voorwerp van verschillende interpretaties. Direct na Beethovens evocatie van Dürers melancholie-engel horen we een ontzettend snelle volksdans die onverenigbaar schijnt te zijn met het gevoel van overpeinzing in de ets van Dürer. Wanneer het La Malinconia-thema terugkeert, kan de luisteraar niet anders dan zich verbaasd af te vragen wat deze sublieme introductie te betekenen heeft in deze meer dan vrolijke context. Waarom daalt Beethoven uit sublieme hoogten steeds weer af naar het aardse tranendal?

Met Shakespeare in het achterhoofd laat deze dichotomie zich misschien nog het best verklaren. Samuel Johnson zei over Shakespeare het volgende: “A quibble is the golden apple for which he will always turn aside from his career, or stoop from his elevation” (een woordspel is voor hem een gouden appel die hij steeds zal oprapen). Beethoven hield enorm van (vaak vrij botte) woordspelingen. Zijn genie verwelkomde de mogelijkheid dat eenzelfde gebaar tegengestelde betekenissen kon hebben en dat de scheidingslijn tussen tragedie en komedie flinterdun is.

Een strijkkwartet is een taal die op verschillende niveaus simultaan functioneert. Net zoals een familie heeft een strijkkwartet een speciaal vocabularium dat enkel en alleen de leden van het strijkkwartet verstaan. In discussies die de leden voeren, zitten jaren humor verborgen, korte referenties naar complexe ideeën en een goede intuïtie om in te schatten wanneer het tijd is om op te houden met discussiëren — of om iemand anders in zijn argumentatie te 21

ondersteunen. Voor een buitenstaander is het vaak moeilijk om de signalen op te vangen die kwartetleden elkaar op het podium geven wanneer ze aan het spelen zijn. Hoe weet men dat men meer tijd wenst of dat men een andere kleur zestien maten verderop aan het voorbereiden is?

Eens men vertrouwd raakt met de kwartetleden, wordt het echter onmogelijk om de signalen niet op te vangen. Kwartetten spelen is gelijktijdig je eigen muzikale visie met de grootst mogelijke helderheid implementeren en volledig receptief zijn voor de indicaties van de andere drie kwartetleden op het podium.

Zes jaar na het afwerken van Op. 18 begon Beethoven opnieuw strijkkwartetten te schrijven. Zijn muzikale taal had zich intussen in ijltempo ontwikkeld. Waar Beethoven in Op. 18 schaafde aan de grenzen van wat in de klassieke periode muzikaal aanvaard was, daar revolutioneerde hij in Op. 59 (opgedragen aan de Russische graaf Razoemovski) het strijkkwartet zozeer dat zijn tijdgenoten bijna moeite hadden om hem nog te verstaan. Het genre dat Goethe ooit omschreef als ‘een gesprek tussen vier scherpzinnige mensen’ kreeg nu symfonische dimensies. Net zoals in Beethovens Derde symfonie, wordt het eerste thema van Op. 59/1 aan de cello gegeven en is de doorwerking zo monumentaal dat de expositie erbij verbleekt. Tussen de eerste beweging en de derde (het ontroerende Adagio molto e mesto) slaagt Beethoven erin om een even groots opgezet scherzo te componeren, gebaseerd op het dunste muzikale materiaal: de herhaling van een enkele toon. Tegenstellingen zijn overvloedig aanwezig in de Razoemovskikwartetten: in de trage beweging van

Op. 59/2, geïnspireerd door het kijken naar de door sterren verlichte hemel, wordt een grenzeloze, overstromende melodie op zijn plaats gehouden door een bijna mechanisch motiefje dat doet denken aan de trage beweging van de Vierde symfonie. De op harmonisch vlak desoriënterende en elkaar overlappende dissonante akkoorden die Op. 59/3 openen, maken plaats voor een thema in do groot. Nog extremer is Op. 95 (het kwartet dat Beethoven voor kenners schreef en nooit publiekelijk mocht worden opgevoerd) waarvan de gebalde intensiteit op het einde zonder waarschuwing uitmondt in een duizelingwekkend virtuoze coda in majeur. Beethoven kent geen eenvoudige vragen en gemakkelijke antwoorden.

Of zoals de muziektheoreticus Theodor Adorno ooit zei: “Beethoven weigert in zijn kunst te verzoenen wat in de werkelijkheid onverzoenbaar is”.

Waar de strijkkwartetten uit Beethovens zogenaamde ‘middenperiode’ alle verwachtingen tartten, daar vormen zijn late strijkkwartetten een wereld op zich. In 1825, het jaar waarin hij Op. 127 schreef, was Beethoven volledig doof en deed hij wat hij zichzelf in 1802 in het Heiligenstädter Testament had opgelegd: zich volledig aan de kunst wijden.

Aan de ene kant zijn de late strijkkwartetten archaïscher dan al het andere werk dat Beethoven schreef: ze wemelen van fuga’s (toen reeds lang uit de mode), dicht contrapunt (schatplichtig aan Renaissance-polyfonie) en in Op. 132 gebruikt hij de lydische toonladder. Aan de andere kant noemde Stravinsky de Große Fuge “muziek die eeuwig modern zal blijven” en leek Beethoven te schrijven voor een ideaal publiek in de toekomst 22

dat de diepte van zijn muziek — én stevig in het verleden verankerd én vooruitblikkend naar wat komen zal — kon vatten.

Vaak hoort men spreken over de identiteit van een kwartet — de collectieve persoonlijkheid van een ensemble dat al jaren samen speelt. Ook als leden vervangen worden, is de identiteit van een kwartet iets wat kan blijven voortbestaan. Hoe dit precies functioneert, valt moeilijk te zeggen. Wij zijn vier individuen, elk met zijn of haar eigen achtergrond en persoonlijke ontwikkeling en vaak lijken we in tegenovergestelde, onverzoenbare richtingen te gaan. Studenten die van verschillende leden van ons kwartet les krijgen, vragen ons vaak hoe wij ondanks onze verschillende opvattingen over muziek zo goed kunnen samenspelen.

De rechterhand van een pianist hoeft nooit te discussiëren met de linkerhand, maar in een kwartet vormt de integriteit van de ene stem soms een gevaar voor de integriteit van de andere stemmen.

Horizontaal bekeken zijn we vier verschillende, erg eigenzinnige identiteiten.

Verticaal bekeken vormen we een geheel bestaande uit vier ineengrijpende en onderling afhankelijke stemmen.

In zijn laatste kwartet, Op. 135, lijkt Beethoven terug te keren naar een meer transparante stijl, maar dit is misleidend.

Beethoven presenteert twee tegengestelde ideeën: een motief met het karakter van een gratievolle lelie, verdeeld tussen

de vier instrumenten, en een schokkend, unisono, chromatisch motief. Beide ideeën brengt hij moeiteloos samen in de doorwerking. De finale is getiteld: “Muß es sein? Es muß sein!” (moet het zijn?

Het moet zijn!). Wat moeten we hiervan denken? Men kan deze beweging verstaan als een aanvaarding van het lot, maar sommige wetenschappers stellen ook dat dit een grap is over de onontkoombaarheid van het betalen van de maandelijkse huur. In geen van de trage bewegingen van Beethovens strijkkwartetten is er een spoor van sarcasme of ironie te bespeuren: de Cavatina van Op. 130, het Heiliger Dankgesang van Op. 132 en de variaties van Op. 135 zijn hier getuigen van. Desondanks worden al deze bewegingen onmiddellijk gevolgd door en geconfronteerd met radicaal andere zaken, respectievelijk een banale mars, de Große Fuge en de “Muss es sein”-finale die stuk voor stuk de broze kwetsbaarheid en innigheid van de trage bewegingen dreigen te verduisteren.

Het hoeft niet te verrassen dat Beethoven helemaal op het einde van zijn leven de onvermijdelijke menselijke tegenstellingen nog intensiveerde: op zijn doodsbed citeerde hij het standaardeinde van klassieke komedies: “Plaudite amici, comedia finita est” (applaudisseer, de komedie is gedaan).

UN NOUVEAU REGARD SUR BEETHOVEN Essai de Jonathan Brown Écouter un quatuor à cordes de Beethoven implique d’être confronté aux émotions les plus contradictoires. Des émotions qui, de surcroît, ne connaissent pas d’équivalent dans la tradition classique en matière de profondeur et de portée dramatique. D’emblée, Beethoven nous met au défi : le geste désinvolte du début de l’Op. 18/1 est-il vraiment un motif musical ? Ou s’agit-il plutôt d’une plaisanterie, à l’instar des mesures d’ouverture de certains quatuors à cordes de Haydn, son mentor ? Grâce aux scientifiques, qui ont étudié les carnets de notes de Beethoven, nous savons aujourd’hui que derrière ce geste désinvolte se cache un travail considérable : Beethoven est passé par de nombreuses esquisses avant d’être finalement satisfait de ces mesures.

Cette recherche obsessionnelle de la perfection pour quelques notes s’explique-t-elle par le talent de Beethoven à résumer dans une seule et même mesure des émotions a priori inconciliables et même contradictoires ? Plus loin dans le mouvement, le motif est soumis aux éléments de l’imagination de Beethoven : il est harmonisé des manières les plus

diverses, démembré, tordu et déconstruit sur le plan métrique. Mais quelle solution Beethoven propose-t-il lorsque le mouvement atteint son point culminant dramatique ?

Il élude le destin par un énigmatique pianissimo qui s’éteint.

Lorsqu’un quatuor est bien exécuté, le jeu des musiciens paraît simple et presque évident : ils respirent et se meuvent comme un seul et même être doté de huit bras. Pourtant, même le mouvement le plus simple implique des années de travail et de discussion, ainsi qu’un vécu commun. Que faut-il pour que quatre personnes jouent une note de la même manière au même moment ?

Ces quatre individus doivent respirer ensemble — pas en même temps, mais avec la même intensité et en suggérant le même mouvement. Pourtant, il n’existe pas deux métabolismes identiques, et encore moins quatre. Ce qui paraît rapide pour l’un est insupportablement lent pour l’autre. La respiration est précédée d’un mouvement préalable des bras et des mains. À ce niveau, chacun a ses habitudes, développées lors de longues années de pratique. De plus, la même note doit être produite sur quatre 24

instruments très différents, sachant par ailleurs que, sur un même instrument, une note a un son légèrement différent en fonction de la corde sur laquelle elle est jouée. S’exercer durant des années pour qu’un motif « simple » ne trahisse pas la complexité de son processus de création : telle est la tâche du quatuor à cordes.

Quelles sont les couches de sens que renferme un mouvement en apparence simple dans la musique de Beethoven ?

La phrase d’ouverture de l’Adagio de l’Op. 18/2 se termine par un motif de quatre notes sous forme de soupir, proche du récitatif. Avant même que la cadence soit véritablement terminée, le motif est repris par le premier violon pour se transformer en une danse virevoltante jouée par les quatre instruments. Dans la musique de Beethoven, rien n’est sacré, aucun « affect » n’est complet sans la révélation de ce qu’il porte en lui le germe de son contraire. Les musiciens qui ont connu Beethoven disaient qu’il avait un talent d’improvisation sans égal : il était capable de transformer la matière musicale la plus banale en quelque chose de sublime. Mais dès qu’il voyait ses auditeurs sur le point de pleurer, il terminait ses improvisations par des finales fortissimo cliché, comme pour dire : « regardez- vous : en fait, tout cela n’était qu’une blague ».

Lorsque Beethoven a composé sa première série de quatuors à cordes Op. 18 à l’âge de 27 ans, il s’est inspiré d’une des œuvres les plus splendides de toute l’histoire de l’art occidental. On peut déduire de ses carnets que le mouvement lent de l’Op. 18/1 a été inspiré par la scène du tombeau de la tragédie Roméo et Juliette de Shakespeare. Il indique même

les figures musicales correspondant aux derniers souffles des protagonistes et au moment où les deux jeunes amants mettent fin à leur vie. Le finale de l’Op. 18/6 est intitulé La Malinconia — début d’une série de titres riches de sens. Beethoven fait ici référence à la gravure éponyme d’Albrecht Dürer, ayant elle-même fait l’objet de différentes interprétations. Juste après l’évocation de l’ange de la mélancolie de Dürer, suit une danse populaire extrêmement rapide qui paraît incompatible avec l’atmosphère méditative de la gravure de Dürer. Lorsque le thème de La Malinconia revient, l’auditeur ne peut que s’interroger avec étonnement sur la signification de cette sublime introduction dans ce contexte plus que joyeux. Pourquoi Beethoven doit-il toujours redescendre des sommets du sublime aux misères de ce bas monde ? La référence à Shakespeare est probablement la meilleure explication à cette dichotomie. Samuel Johnson parlait du grand dramaturge anglais en ces termes : « A quibble is the golden apple for which he will always turn aside from his career, or stoop from his elevation » (le jeu de mot est pour lui une pomme dorée pour laquelle il se baissera toujours). Beethoven adorait les jeux de mots (souvent triviaux). Son génie accueillait ainsi la possibilité qu’un même geste puisse avoir des significations opposées et que la limite entre tragédie et comédie soit ténue.

Le quatuor à cordes est un langage fonctionnant simultanément à différents niveaux. Tout comme une famille, il utilise un vocabulaire spécifique que seuls ses membres comprennent. Leurs discussions recèlent des années d’humour, de courtes références à des idées complexes et une 25

grande faculté à identifier le moment où mettre fin à la discussion — ou venir en aide à un des autres interlocuteurs. Pour un non-initié, il est souvent difficile d’identifier les signaux que s’échangent les membres du quatuor sur scène lorsqu’ils jouent.

Comment savoir qu’on souhaite ralentir ou qu’on prépare la transition vers une nouvelle couleur seize mesures plus tard ?

Une fois que l’on commence à connaître les membres du groupe cependant, il devient impossible de ne pas identifier ces signaux. Interpréter des quatuors implique à la fois d’appliquer sa propre vision musicale avec la plus grande clarté possible et de rester totalement réceptif aux indications des trois autres membres de l’ensemble sur scène.

Six ans après l’achèvement de l’Op. 18, Beethoven se remit à composer des quatuors à cordes. Entre-temps, son langage musical s’était développé à une vitesse fulgurante. Là ou dans l’Op. 18 il jouait timidement avec les limites du musicalement acceptable dans la période classique, il révolutionne le quatuor à cordes dans l’Op. 59 (dédié au comte russe Razoumovski), à tel point que ses contemporains avaient presque des difficultés à le comprendre. Le genre un jour décrit par Goethe comme « une conversation entre quatre personnes intelligentes » prenait désormais des dimensions symphoniques.

Tout comme dans la Troisième Symphonie de Beethoven, le premier thème de l’Op. 59/1 est joué au violoncelle et son développement est tellement monumental que l’exposition paraît bien insignifiante en comparaison. Entre les premier et troisième mouvements (l’émouvant Adagio molto e mesto), Beethoven réussit à créer un scherzo tout aussi grandiose

à partir de la donnée musicale la plus simple : la répétition d’une même note.

Les contrastes sont légion dans les quatuors Razoumovski : dans le mouvement lent de l’Op. 59/2, inspiré par la contemplation du ciel éclairé par les étoiles, une mélodie infinie et bouillonnante est structurée par un petit motif presque mécanique, qui n’est pas sans rappeler le mouvement lent de la Quatrième Symphonie. Les accords dissonants ouvrant l’Op. 59/3, qui désorientent quelque peu sur le plan harmonique et se superposent, font quant à eux place à un thème en do majeur. L’opposition est encore plus extrême dans l’Op. 95 (le quatuor écrit par Beethoven pour les connaisseurs et qui ne pouvait être exécuté en public), dont l’intensité compacte finit par déboucher sans transition sur une coda en majeur d’une étourdissante virtuosité.

Beethoven ne connaît ni questions simples ni réponses faciles. Ou comme le formula un jour le théoricien de la musique Theodor Adorno : « Beethoven refuse de concilier dans son art ce qui est inconciliable dans la réalité ».

Si les quatuors à cordes de la période dite « médiane » de Beethoven défient toutes les attentes, ses quatuors tardifs constituent un monde en soi. En 1825, année de composition de l’Op. 127, Beethoven était devenu totalement sourd et fit ce qu’il s’était imposé en 1802 dans son Testament de Heiligenstadt : se consacrer entièrement à l’art. D’un côté, les quatuors à cordes tardifs de Beethoven sont plus archaïques que le reste de son œuvre : ils fourmillent de fugues (à l’époque depuis longtemps passées de mode), de contrepoint serré (héritage de la polyphonie de la Renaissance) 26

et dans l’Op. 132, il fait usage de la gamme lydienne. De l’autre côté, Stravinsky considérait la Grande Fugue comme une « musique qui restera éternellement moderne », et Beethoven semblait composer pour un public futur idéal qui serait capable d’appréhender toute la profondeur de sa musique — à la fois solidement ancrée dans le passé et tournée vers l’avenir.

On entend souvent parler de l’identité d’un quatuor — la personnalité collective d’un ensemble qui joue depuis de nombreuses années. Même si des membres sont remplacés, l’identité d’un quatuor est une caractéristique qui peut subsister. Il est difficile d’en expliquer véritablement le fonctionnement. Nous sommes quatre individus ayant chacun son parcours et son développement personnel, et nous donnons souvent l’impression de prendre des directions opposées et inconciliables. Les étudiants suivant les cours de différents membres de notre quatuor nous demandent souvent comment nous parvenons à jouer si bien ensemble malgré nos différences en matière de conception de la musique. Il n’est jamais nécessaire pour la main droite d’un pianiste de discuter avec sa main gauche, alors que dans un quatuor, l’intégrité d’une voix constitue parfois un danger pour l’intégrité des autres voix. Sur le plan horizontal, nous sommes quatre identités différentes et très particulières.

D’un point de vue vertical, nous formons un ensemble constitué de quatre voix imbriquées et interdépendantes.

Dans son dernier quatuor Op. 135, Beethoven semble revenir à un style plus transparent, mais l’impression est trompeuse. Il présente deux idées opposées : une mélodie gracieuse, répartie entre les quatre instruments, et un motif chromatique cahotant à l’unisson. Il parvient sans difficulté à réunir les deux idées dans son développement. Le finale est intitulé : « Muß es sein ? Es muß sein ! » (Le faut-il ?

Il le faut !). Que devons-nous en déduire ?

On peut comprendre ce mouvement comme une acceptation du destin, cependant certains scientifiques y voient également une plaisanterie sur le caractère inéluctable de l’obligation de payer son loyer. Aucun des mouvements lents des quatuors à cordes de Beethoven ne contient le moindre soupçon de sarcasme ou d’ironie, comme en témoignent la Cavatine de l’Op. 130, le Chant sacré d’ action de grâce de l’Op. 132 et les variations de l’Op. 135. Tous ces mouvements sont néanmoins immédiatement suivis ou confrontés à des passages radicalement différents, à savoir respectivement une marche banale, la Grande fugue et le finale « Muss es sein », qui menacent tous d’occulter la grande vulnérabilité et la tendresse de ces mouvements lents.

Il n’est pas étonnant que Beethoven ait davantage encore mis en exergue les inévitables contradictions humaines vers la fin de sa vie : sur son lit de mort encore, il citait la réplique traditionnelle de fin des comédies classiques : « Plaudite amici, comedia finita est » (Applaudissez, la comédie est terminée).

BEETHOVEN ILLUMINATED ANEW an essay by jonathan brown A listener confronted by Beethoven’s quartets is presented with a series of impossibilities, a set of situations of emotional depth and dramatic breadth virtually unequalled in the Classical tradition. From the beginning of the quartet he chose to publish as his first, Op. 18/1, Beethoven throws down the gauntlet: is this ornamental turn really a motive? Or is this an elevated joke, like so many of his mentor Joseph Haydn’s witty openings?

We now know, thanks to scholars who have examined Beethoven’s compositional notebooks, that behind this simple flourish lay meticulous labour — Beethoven discarded numerous formulations of this theme before settling on its final version.

Could Beethoven’s need to obsessively refine such a ‘simple’ gesture have lain in its ability to contain so many seemingly incompatible or even contradictory emotional meanings? Over the course of the movement, (as in so many of his works) this innocent turn is exposed to the elements of Beethoven’s imagination: cast in myriad harmonic shadings, torn apart, distorted and displaced metrically and yet when the movement comes to its dramatic climax, what resolution

does Beethoven offer? An evasion of all responsibility for its fate, an enigmatic pianissimo slithering away.

When one hears a quartet playing well, it looks easy and obvious, as if a single being is breathing and moving with eight arms. But behind even the most evidently simple gesture lie years of work and disagreement and shared history.

What needs to happen, for example, such that four people can pluck the same note at the same time in the same way? Four individuals must breathe together — not just simultaneously, but with the same intensity, suggesting the same movement.

But no two people, let alone four, have the same metabolism: what is ‘fast’ for one person may seem painfully ‘slow’ to another. The literal intake of air in the lungs corresponds to a preparatory gesture with the arms and hands which also has to be coordinated; but here again, each member has his own individual habits, a muscular memory of technique developed over years of practice. What’s more, this seemingly identical note has to be produced on four different instruments and even the same note played on two different strings of the same instrument 28

requires a slight adaptation to produce a similar result. This is the work of a string quartet - years of trial and error so that even a ‘simple’ gesture won’t betray its complex history to the listener.

And what hidden layers of meaning can lie within even an ostensibly direct motive in Beethoven’s music? The opening strophe of the Adagio from Op. 18/2 concludes with a sighing, recitative-like four-note figure; this cadence has barely finished before the motive is picked up by the first violin, turned into a whirling dance, and exchanged between all four instruments. No single reality is sacrosanct in Beethoven’s world, no one ‘Affekt’ complete without having revealed within itself the seed of its polar opposite. Musicians from Beethoven’s circle recounted his unmatched improvisational abilities, how he could take the most banal material and transform it into something sublime - just as soon as his listeners were moved to tears, they remembered, he would cut the variations short with a cliché fortissimo finale, as if to say ‘look at yourselves, it was all only a joke after all.’

When the 27-year-old Beethoven began composing the Op. 18 quartets, he found inspiration in some of the most sublime works of art in the Western tradition.

We know from his sketchbooks - his musical diary, so to speak - that the slow movement of Op. 18/1 was inspired by the ‘Tomb Scene’ from Romeo and Juliet: he indicates which musical figures correspond to the protagonists last breaths and the moment at which the two young lovers end their lives. The finale of Op. 18/6 is entitled La Malinconia, the first of many movement headings pregnant

with meaning. Here Beethoven refers to the great etching by Albrecht Dürer, itself the subject of varied interpretations. But directly following Beethoven’s evocation of Dürer’s melancholy angel comes a blazingly fast country dance, seemingly incompatible with the sense of reflection in the engraving. As the ‘Malinconia’ theme returns to interrupt the dance, the listener is left to wonder what the sublime introduction could mean in the context of the ensuing gaiety. And what always seemed to pull Beethoven from these heights back to Earth? Possibly with Shakespeare in mind we can best understand this dichotomy: Samuel Johnson, remarked that for Shakespeare, ‘a pun is the golden apple... for which he will always stoop.’ Beethoven loved (often relatively crass) wordplay, Beethoven’s genius welcomed the possibility that the same gesture could have opposing meanings, that the line separating tragedy from comedy is razor-thin.

A string quartet is above all a language which operates on various levels simultaneously. Like a family, a quartet has a special vocabulary which only its members understand. There are years of jokes folded into arguments, shorthand references to complex ideas, an evolved intuition indicating when it is time to pull back from an argument or to lend a supporting hand. While crystal clear to each of the members, the musical signals exchanged on stage may be equally hard to translate to an outsider.

How did one know that she wanted more time there or that he was preparing a different colour 16 bars ahead?

Once one has become attuned to them, the messages are impossible to ignore; to play quartets is to simultaneously imply 29

In the ‘Razumovsky’ quartets, the contradictions abound: in the slow movement of Op. 59/2, apparently inspired by gazing into the starlit sky, the most unbound melody is held firmly in place by a quasimechanical figure similar to that from the slow movement of the Fourth Symphony, Op. 60. The harmonically disorienting and overlapping dissonant chords which open Op. 59/3 give way to a C Major theme built on the most solid harmonic ground.

And even more extreme: the compressed intensity of Op. 95 in f minor (a quartet which even Beethoven considered ‘never to be performed in public’) concludes virtually without warning with a dizzyingly virtuosic coda in the major mode. With Beethoven there are neither simple answers nor easy resolutions, as Theodor Adorno remarked, “Beethoven refused to reconcile in the image what is unreconciled in reality”.

If the ‘Middle Period’ quartets defied all expectations, the ‘Late Quartets’ belong to a world unto themselves.

By 1825, the year of Op. 127, Beethoven was completely deaf, yet fulfilling the promise he made to himself in the Heiligenstädter Testament of 1802, when he vowed to give himself completely to his art. From one perspective, these five final quartets use more archaic materials than in any of Beethoven’s other works: dense counterpoint reminiscent of Renaissance polyphony; fugues, a form long considered out of fashion; the Lydian mode in Op. 132, associated with his convalescence. And yet, as Stravinsky wrote of the Große Fuge, this is ‘modern music for all times;’ Beethoven seemed to be writing for an idealised audience of the future, for listeners capable of experiencing an overwhelming depth of

one’s own musical vision with maximum clarity, and to be fully receptive to the indications of the other three on stage.

After Op. 18, it was only six years before Beethoven returned to writing quartets, but these were hugely productive years for him, representing a breakthrough in his musical language.

Where Beethoven earlier chafed at the limits of accepted Classical norms, with the Op. 59 quartets dedicated to Count Razumovsky, he expanded their possibilities beyond what people of his time could easily comprehend. The genre which was once described by Goethe as ‘a conversation between four sensible people’ now takes on symphonic dimensions. Like the Third Symphony, Op. 55, the first theme of Op. 59/1 is given to the cello and the development of its first movement dwarfs its own exposition.

Placed between this monumental edifice and the deeply moving Adagio molto e mesto, Beethoven manages to create a scherzo of equally provocative proportions based on the (seemingly) flimsiest of materials: a single repeated pitch.

meaningful sounds, thoroughly grounded in the past, yet pointing towards the future.

One hears often about the identity of a quartet - the collective personality of the ensemble which, after a number of years together, is larger than any of its individual parts; even as members change, this collective personality seems to live on.

From the inside, however, this is a very difficult phenomenon to gauge. We are four distinct individuals each with his or her own background and personal evolution, often going in what would appear to be irreconcilable directions. Students, upon receiving lessons from different members of the same quartet often ask how these four people can play so well together, given how different their musical perspectives seem to be. A pianist’s right hand never has to argue with her left, whereas in a quartet, the integrity of each voice places a unique burden on the others.

From the horizontal perspective we are four distinct and highly opinionated voices, from the vertical we are a whole consisting of four interlocking and interdependent voices working in concert.

Even when Beethoven seemed to return a more transparent style in his final quartet Op. 135, its surface ease proves deceptive. Beethoven presents us with two opposing ideas: a graceful lilt distributed between the four instruments and a

jarring, unison, chromatic motive, the two of which he is able to effortlessly combine in the development section. And what meaning is to be found in the Finale of his last completed work: ‘Muß es sein?

Es muß sein!’ (Must it be? It must be!’?)

One could understand this movement as an acceptance of his fate or, as some scholars would have it, a play on words or a mockery of his landlord to whom the rent must be paid. There is not a trace of irony or sarcasm in any of the great slow movements of these final quartets: the Cavatina, the recollection of which Beethoven himself admitted brought him to tears; the Heiliger Dankgesang, his ‘Holy Song of Thanks’ after having recovered from a grave illness; or the masterful variations of Op. 135. Nevertheless, each of these movements is immediately followed by and confronted with radically different forces, a banal march, the Great Fugue and ‘Muss es sein’, respectively, which threaten to overwhelm or obscure the vulnerability so deeply felt in the slow movements. Perhaps unsurprisingly, to the very end Beethoven did not seek to resolve these inevitable human contradictions: as he lay on his deathbed Beethoven quoted the common ending of classical comedy: “Plaudite amici, comedia finita est” (Applaud, friends, the comedy is over).

EEN MODEL VOOR POSITIEVE DIALOOG Het Cuarteto Casals, in 1997 in Madrid opgericht, is vandaag uitgegroeid tot een van ‘s werelds meest bekende strijkkwartetten. Op Klarafestival 2020 brengen zij in een reeks van zes concerten de integrale strijkkwartetten van Beethoven, aangevuld met enkele hedendaagse composities. Een interview met Jonathan Brown, de altviolist van het Cuarteto Casals.

De naam Cuarteto Casals verwijst naar de beroemde Catalaanse cellist Pablo Casals.

Waarom is hij zo belangrijk voor jullie?

gevarieerd programma aanbieden. Elk van de zes concerten bevat dus een vroeg, een middel en/of een laat strijkkwartet van Beethoven. We hebben ons best gedaan om voor elk concert een overkoepelend thema te vinden: de fuga als muzikale vorm, het thema met variaties, de relatie tussen de toonaarden mi klein en Fa groot… en dan onderzoeken we hoe Beethoven hiermee in zijn verschillende periodes is omgegaan. De nieuwe stukken die we hebben laten schrijven — een voor elk concert — zijn antwoorden op specifieke strijkkwartetten.

Jonathan Brown Pablo Casals staat voor enkele waarden die ook wij hoog in het vaandel dragen. Op muzikaal vlak gaat dit dan over eerlijkheid en direct contact met het publiek.

Wij bewonderen echter ook zijn humanistische kijk, zijn inzet voor de mensenrechten, zijn politieke waarden en op het einde ook zijn koppigheid. Na de stichting van het kwartet ontmoetten we zijn weduwe, Marta Casals Istomin. Sindsdien ontspon er zich een mooie vriendschap. Wij zijn er zeer trots op Pablo Casals’ naam te mogen gebruiken!

Bij het platenlabel Harmonia Mundi brengen jullie – in drie verschillende cd’s – een opname van Beethovens integrale strijkkwartetten uit. Beïnvloedt dit opnameproces jullie live concerten?

Tijdens Klarafestival 2020 voeren jullie in zes concerten alle strijkkwartetten van Beethoven uit. Maar niet in chronologische volgorde.

JB Door muziek op te nemen en jezelf continu te beluisteren, krijg je pas echt de kans om aan je eigen interpretatie te vijlen.

Je draait de schroeven van de machine aan: er is geen detail dat nog aan je aandacht ontsnapt.

Intussen hebben we de opname van de cyclus volledig achter de rug. Onze live interpretaties

JB Inderdaad, want dat zou enkel interessant zijn voor de mensen die de volledige cyclus bijwonen. Wij willen de mensen die maar een of twee concerten bezoeken echter ook een

zijn door dat proces strakker, compacter, vloeiender en minder lankmoedig geworden, maar aan de andere kant — ik wil niet zeggen minder spontaan, want we werken er hard aan om dat aspect te behouden — is er ook minder ruimte voor fouten.

JB Zijn eerste zes strijkkwartetten, Op. 18, componeerde Beethoven duidelijk in de traditie van Haydn en Mozart. Je hoort reeds de zaden van wat zal komen, maar toch zijn deze werken nog duidelijk op een 18de-eeuws model gebaseerd. Vijf jaar later schreef Beethoven de Razoemovski-kwartetten, Op. 59, en dat is meteen een wereld van verschil. Net zoals de Derde, Vierde en Vijfde Symfonie zijn de Razoemovski-kwartetten monumentale, overweldigende composities. Daarna krijg je het fantastische Op. 74 en het door Beethoven voor connaisseurs bedoelde Op. 95. Na de Negende Symfonie, na de Missa solemnis en na zijn late pianosonates, componeerde Beethoven aan het einde van zijn leven nog zijn zogenaamde late strijkkwartetten en die composities — Op. 127, 130, 131, 132, 133 en 135 — kennen hun weerga niet. Spectaculaire, monumentale, quasi-symfonische passages wisselen er af met de meest zoete, tedere en liefdevolle momenten uit de muziekgeschiedenis. Het ongelofelijke aan de late strijkkwartetten van Beethoven is dat met slechts vier strijkers — geen blazers, geen dirigent, geen zangers — een ongelofelijk spectrum aan menselijke emoties en ervaringen wordt geschetst. Dat heeft tot op de dag van vandaag niemand hem nagedaan.

Jijzelf bent uit Amerika afkomstig, studeerde zowel aan de Juilliard School te New York als aan het Mozarteum te Salzburg en maakt sinds 2002 deel uit van het kwartet. Hoe verliep de selectieprocedure?

JB Toen ik in Salzburg studeerde, kreeg ik een telefoon van het Cuarteto Casals met het bericht dat ze een nieuwe altviolist zochten.

Via Rainer Schmidt, de tweede violist van het Hagen Quartett, die zowel aan het Cuarteto Casals als aan mij lesgaf, kenden we elkaar. Sommige kwartetten hanteren erg complexe auditiemethodes — met ellenlange Exceltabellen waarin verschillende aspecten van je spel gequoteerd worden. Bij ons was er daarentegen meteen een klik. We zagen elkaar in Köln, speelden 45 minuten samen en reeds in de pauze vroegen ze mij of ik deel wou uitmaken van het kwartet. Ik bevestigde, we repeteerden nog wat verder en daarna begonnen we concerten te plannen. Ofschoon het eerste jaar allesbehalve eenvoudig was (ik moest maar liefst 45 kwartetten instuderen), kan ik me vandaag niet meer voorstellen geen deel uit te maken van het Cuarteto Casals.

Eigenlijk zijn er intussen weinig kwartetten die al zo lang in dezelfde formatie spelen als wij: bijna 18 jaar.

Beethovens strijkkwartetten gaan in dialoog met enkele hedendaagse composities voor strijkkwartet, door jullie in opdracht gegeven. Hoe kozen jullie de componisten uit?

JB We streefden naar een stilistisch gezien zo breed als mogelijk antwoord op Beethovens strijkkwartetten. Lucio Franco Amanti en Giovanni Sollima schreven bijvoorbeeld op jazz gebaseerde, erg toegankelijke en grappige muziek — zonder daarbij oppervlakkig

Stravinsky zei over Beethovens late strijkkwartetten— de Große Fuge in het bijzonder — dat ze tot in de eeuwigheid modern zullen blijven. Vanwaar dat enthousiasme?

Aan de ene kant spelen jullie af en toe op de Stradivarius-instrumenten uit de verzameling van de Spaanse koninklijke familie, aan de andere kant kregen jullie een prijs voor het uitdragen van de Catalaanse cultuur. Wordt dit door de Catalaanse kwestie niet bemoeilijkt?

te zijn — terwijl aan de andere kant van het spectrum Aureliano Cattaneo en Benet Casablancas muziek componeerden die in de beste zin van het woord ietwat koppig is en waar je je echt in moet vastbijten. Sommige van deze componisten waren vrienden, andere mensen die we bewonderden, nog andere werden ons getipt door de huizen waarmee we samenwerkten.

JB De Catalaanse kwestie blijft inderdaad een heet hangijzer. Maar minder dan in de herfst van het jaar 2017 natuurlijk, toen het referendum georganiseerd werd en daarna de onafhankelijkheid werd uitgeroepen. Net toen begonnen we trouwens onze Beethovencyclus te spelen. De situatie was toen erg gespannen.

Vandaag is er nog steeds een groot deel van de Catalaanse bevolking dat graag zou gaan stemmen, maar de Spaanse regering houdt de touwtjes strak in handen. Onze mening over de gehele kwestie? Die is te complex om zo maar even in een kort statement samen te vatten. Wij zijn in elk geval zeer trots op de Spaanse traditie van waaruit wij vertrekken, zowel als op onze rol als ambassadeur van de Catalaanse cultuur.

De specifieke sound van het Cuarteto Casals – die in nagenoeg elke recensie wordt geloofd – is voor een deel te danken aan de instrumenten en bogen die jullie gebruiken. Hoe zit dat precies in elkaar?

JB Ons klankideaal is de wijze waarop een kwartet in Beethovens tijd klonk. Of hoe we denken dat een kwartet toen klonk. Op basis van de beschikbare info proberen we dat ideaal te benaderen. Jaren geleden hebben we erg veel geëxperimenteerd, met darmsnaren bijvoorbeeld. Maar door een gemengd programma te spelen – Beethoven en hedendaagse muziek — en door het snelle ontstemmen waren darmsnaren uiteindelijk geen optie. Daarom zijn we op zoek gegaan naar snaren die enerzijds de klank van darmsnaren zo dicht als mogelijk benaderen en anderzijds ook modern kunnen klinken. We zijn altijd erg blij als we van muzikanten in het publiek de vraag krijgen of we nu op darmsnaren spelen of niet. Daarnaast wordt onze klank ook in belangrijke mate bepaald door het gebruik van historische bogen. Dat betekent niet dat we spelen met bogen uit de 18de eeuw, maar wel dat onze bogen gemaakt zijn op precies dezelfde wijze en met precies dezelfde materialen.

Beethovens verhouding met de toenmalige politieke situatie is legendarisch: in korte tijd sloeg zijn bewondering voor Napoleon om in totale verachting.

De plotse klankuitbarstingen in de strijkkwartetten uit zijn middenperiode zouden zelfs in verband kunnen gebracht worden met het bombardement van Wenen in 1809.

JB Inderdaad. Aan de andere kant — en dat is een mooie quote van Beethoven die ik in de herfst van 2017 las — schreef hij ooit aan een vriend: “Ik ga het niet hebben over koningen en hun rijken: daarover vertelt de krant reeds genoeg. Wat ik daarentegen verkies, is het

keizerrijk van de geest”. Voor ons was het erg opvallend dat in 2017, toen de situatie zo gespannen, chaotisch en moeilijk was, onze strijkkwartetten erg warm werden onthaald — alsof men er temidden van het tumult oprecht nood aan had. Wat wij hopen is dat de strijkkwartetten die we brengen, kunnen dienen als een model voor positieve dialoog: een wijze van samenleven die én elke stem respecteert én samenwerken hoog in haar vaandel draagt.

UN EXAMPLE DE DIALOGUE POSITIF Le Cuarteto Casals, fondé en 1997 à Madrid, est aujourd’hui devenu un des quatuors à cordes les plus célèbres au monde. Lors du Klarafestival 2020, l’ensemble interprètera à l’occasion d’une série de six concerts l’intégrale des quatuors à cordes de Beethoven, complétée par quelques compositions contemporaines. Une interview de Jonathan Brown, altiste du Cuarteto Casals.

Le nom Cuarteto Casals fait référence au célèbre violoncelliste catalan Pablo Casals. Pourquoi ce personnage est-il si important pour vous ?

cycle. Nous voulons également proposer un programme varié à ceux qui n’assistent qu’à un ou deux concerts. Chacun des concerts reprend donc un quatuor précoce, un quatuor intermédiaire et/ou un quatuor tardif de Beethoven.

Nous avons fait de notre mieux pour articuler chaque concert autour d’un thème : la fugue comme forme musicale, le thème avec variations, la relation entre les tonalités de mi et fa… et nous étudions la manière avec laquelle Beethoven a traité ces aspects au cours de ses différentes périodes. Les nouvelles œuvres que nous avons commandées — une pour chaque concert — sont des réponses à des quatuors spécifiques.

Jonathan Brown Pablo Casals incarne certaines des valeurs que nous tentons nous aussi de défendre. Sur le plan musical, il s’agit de la sincérité et du contact direct avec le public.

Mais nous admirons également sa vision humaniste, son implication dans la défense des droits de l’homme, ses opinons politiques et vers la fin de sa vie, sa ténacité. Après la création du quatuor, nous avons rencontré sa veuve, Marta Casals Istomin. Nous avons noué depuis un véritable lien d’amitié. Nous sommes particulièrement fiers de pouvoir porter le nom de Pablo Casals.

Vous publiez sous le label Harmonia Mundi, sur trois CD, un enregistrement de l’intégrale des quatuors à cordes de Beethoven. Ce processus d’enregistrement influence-t-il vos concerts ?

Lors du Klarafestival 2020, vous interpréterez sur six concerts l’ensemble des quatuors à cordes de Beethoven. Mais pas dans leur ordre chronologique.

JB En enregistrant une musique et en écoutant son travail en permanence, on a vraiment la possibilité de peaufiner son interprétation. On effectue un travail de plus en plus

Stravinsky disait des quatuors à cordes tardifs de Beethoven – en particulier la Grande Fugue – qu’ils resteraient éternellement modernes. D’où vient cet enthousiasme ?

précis, et plus aucun détail ne nous échappe.

L’enregistrement du cycle est derrière nous à présent. Ce processus a permis de rendre nos interprétations live plus précises, plus compactes, plus fluides et moins indulgentes, mais en revanche – je ne dirais pas qu’elles sont moins spontanées, car nous travaillons assidûment à préserver cet aspect – il y a moins de place pour l’erreur.

JB Beethoven a manifestement composé ses six premiers quatuors à cordes, Op. 18, dans la tradition de Haydn et Mozart. On peut déjà y percevoir les germes de l’évolution de son style, mais ces œuvres restent clairement basées sur un modèle du 18e siècle. Cinq ans plus tard, Beethoven compose les quatuors Razoumovski, Op. 59, et il y a déjà un monde de différence. Tout comme les Troisième, Quatrième et Cinquième Symphonies, les quatuors Razoumovski sont des compositions monumentales et colossales. Vient ensuite le fantastique Op. 74 et l’Op. 95, composé par Beethoven pour les connaisseurs. Après la Neuvième symphonie, la Missa solemnis et ses sonates pour piano tardives, Beethoven composa également à la fin de sa vie ce que l’on appelle ses quatuors à cordes tardifs, et ces compositions — Op. 127, 130, 131, 132, 133 et 135 — sont sans égal.

Des passages spectaculaires, monumentaux, et quasi symphoniques alternent avec les moments les plus doux, tendres et chaleureux de l’histoire de la musique. Ce qui est incroyable dans ces quatuors tardifs, c’est qu’il parvient, avec seulement quatre instruments à cordes (pas de vents, pas de chef d’orchestre, pas de chanteurs) à suggérer un immense spectre d’émotions et d’expériences humaines.

Personne d’autre n’a réussi cet exploit à ce jour.

Vous êtes originaire des États-Unis, vous avez étudié à la Juilliard School de New York ainsi qu’au Mozarteum de Salzbourg et faites partie du quatuor depuis 2002. Comment s’est déroulée la procédure de sélection ?

JB Lorsque j’étudiais à Salzbourg, j’ai été contacté par le Cuarteto Casals, qui recherchait un nouvel altiste. Nous nous connaissions via Rainer Schmidt, le deuxième violon du Quatuor Hagen, qui nous avait donné cours, au Cuarteto Casals comme à moi-même. Certains quatuors pratiquent des méthodes d’audition très complexes – avec des tableaux Excel interminables évaluant différents aspects de votre jeu. Dans notre cas, le courant est passé immédiatement. Nous nous sommes vus à Cologne, nous avons joué 45 minutes ensemble et pendant la pause déjà, ils me demandaient si je voulais faire partie du quatuor. J’ai accepté, nous avons continué à répéter, puis nous avons commencé à planifier les concerts. Bien que la première année ait été tout sauf simple (j’ai dû apprendre pas moins de 45 quatuors), je ne peux plus imaginer aujourd’hui ne pas faire partie du Cuarteto Casals. En fait, je connais peu de quatuors ayant joué aussi longtemps que nous avec la même formation : nous travaillons ensemble depuis près de 18 ans.

Les quatuors à cordes de Beethoven dialoguent avec plusieurs compositions contemporaines pour quatuor à cordes que vous avez commandées. Comment avez-vous choisi les compositeurs ?

finalement abandonné l’idée des cordes en boyaux. Nous avons donc recherché un type de cordes qui, d’une part permettaient de s’approcher le plus possible du son des cordes en boyaux, et pouvaient d’autre part avoir une sonorité moderne. Nous sommes toujours très heureux lorsqu’un musicien parmi le public nous demande si nous jouons sur des cordes en boyaux ou pas. Par ailleurs, notre son est également influencé dans une large mesure par l’utilisation d’archets historiques. Cela ne veut pas dire que nous jouons sur des archets du 18e siècle, mais que ceux-ci sont fabriqués exactement de la même manière et à partir des mêmes matériaux.

JB Nous avons tenté d’offrir aux quatuors à cordes de Beethoven une réponse la plus large possible sur le plan stylistique. Lucio Franco Amanti et Giovanni Sollima par exemple, ont composé des musiques basées sur le jazz, très accessibles et amusantes — sans pour autant qu’elles soient superficielles — tandis qu’à l’autre extrémité du spectre, Aureliano Cattaneo et Benet Casablancas ont créé des œuvres quelque peu complexes, au sens le plus positif du terme, et qui ne sont pas évidentes à appréhender. Certains de ces compositeurs étaient des amis, d’autres des artistes que nous admirions, d’autres encore nous ont été recommandés par les organisations avec lesquelles nous collaborons.

D’un côté, il vous arrive de jouer sur les Stradivarius de la collection de la famille royale espagnole, et de l’autre, vous avez reçu un prix pour la promotion de la culture catalane. La question catalane n’est-elle pas problématique pour vous ?

Le son caractéristique du Cuarteto Casals – apprécié de façon presque unanime par la critique – provient en partie des instruments et des archets que vous utilisez. Qu’en est-il précisément ?

JB La question catalane reste en effet un sujet délicat, mais bien sûr, moins qu’à l’automne 2017, au moment de l’organisation du référendum puis de la déclaration d’indépendance. C’est d’ailleurs à ce moment précis que nous avons commencé à jouer notre cycle consacré à Beethoven. La situation était alors très tendue… Aujourd’hui, une grande partie de la population catalane souhaite toujours que des élections aient lieu, mais le gouvernement espagnol garde la situation sous contrôle.

Notre avis sur l’ensemble de la question ? Elle est trop complexe pour être résumée en quelques mots. Quoi qu’il en soit, nous sommes très fiers de la tradition espagnole qui est à la base de notre musique, comme de notre rôle d’ambassadeur de la culture catalane.

JB Notre son idéal est celui du quatuor à l’époque de Beethoven. Ou ce que nous pensons être le son du quatuor à cette époque. À partir des informations dont nous disposons, nous tentons de nous approcher de cet idéal. Il y a plusieurs années, nous avons beaucoup expérimenté, par exemple au niveau des cordes en boyaux. Mais dans la mesure où nous proposons un programme varié – avec des œuvres de Beethoven comme de la musique contemporaine – et comme elles se désaccordent facilement, nous avons

Le rapport de Beethoven vis-à-vis de la situation politique de l’époque est bien connu : en peu de temps, son admiration pour Napoléon s’est muée en un mépris total. On pense même que les explosions sonores soudaines des quatuors à cordes de sa période médiane pourraient être mises en parallèle avec le bombardement de Vienne en 1809.

royaumes, le journal en parle déjà suffisamment. Ce que je choisis en revanche, c’est l’empire de l’esprit. » En 2017, alors que la situation était particulièrement tendue, chaotique et difficile, nous avons été frappés par le chaleureux accueil réservé à nos quatuors à cordes — comme s’ils étaient vraiment nécessaires au milieu de ce tumulte. Notre espoir est que les quatuors à cordes que nous présentons puissent constituer un exemple de dialogue positif : une manière de vivre ensemble qui à la fois respecte chacune des voix, et accorde une grande valeur à la collaboration.

JB En effet. D’autre part – et c’est une belle citation de Beethoven que j’ai lue en automne 2017 — il a écrit un jour à un ami : « Je ne vais pas m’entretenir ici des rois et de leurs

A MODEL FOR POSITIVE DIALOGUE The Cuarteto Casals, formed in Madrid in 1997, has become one of the best-known string quartets in the world today. In a series of six concerts at Klarafestival 2020 they will perform the complete Beethoven string quartets along with a number of contemporary compositions. An interview with Jonathan Brown, violist with the Cuarteto Casals.

The name Cuarteto Casals is a reference to the renowned Catalan cellist Pablo Casals. Why is he so important to you?

includes an early-, middle- and/or late-period Beethoven string quartet. We’ve done our best to come up with an overarching theme for each concert: the fugue as musical form, the theme with variations, the relationship between the E and F tonalities... and then we examine how Beethoven worked with each theme in his various periods. The new pieces we have written — one for each concert — are responses to specific string quartets.

Jonathan Brown Pablo Casals represents certain values that we aim to uphold ourselves.

In a musical context, this means honesty and a direct connection with the audience. However, we also admire his humanist outlook, his dedication to human rights, his political values and ultimately, his stubbornness too. After we formed the quartet we met his widow, Marta Casals Istomin. A beautiful friendship has since developed. We are very proud to be able to use Pablo Casals’ name!

You’re releasing a recording of Beethoven’s complete string quartets on three CDs on the Harmonia Mundi label.

Does this recording process influence your live concerts?

At Klarafestival 2020 you’ll be playing all of Beethoven’s string quartets across six concerts. But not in chronological order.

JB Only by recording music and listening to yourself constantly do you really get the chance to refine your own interpretation. When you’re getting down to the nuts and bolts, no detail escapes your attention. The recording of the cycle is now complete. It’s made our live interpretations tighter, more compact, more fluid and less indulgent, but on the other hand — I don’t want to say less spontaneous, because

JB Indeed, as that would only be of interest to those people who attend the entire cycle. However, we want the people who only come to one or two concerts to hear a varied programme too. So each of the six concerts

we work hard to maintain that aspect — there’s also less room for error.

Five years later, Beethoven wrote the Razumovsky quartets, Op. 59, and they are a world apart. Like the Third, Fourth and Fifth Symphonies, the Razumovsky quartets are monumental, overpowering compositions.

Then there is the fantastic Op. 74, and Op. 95 which Beethoven wrote for connoisseurs.

At the end of his life, following the Ninth Symphony, the Missa solemnis and his late piano sonatas, Beethoven composed what is referred to as his late string quartets, and those compositions — Op. 127, 130, 131, 132, 133 and 135 — are unparalleled. Spectacular, monumental, almost symphonic passages alternate with the sweetest, tenderest, fondest moments in the history of music. The incredible thing about Beethoven’s late string quartets is that they evoke such an amazing range of human emotions and experiences with only four string instruments — no brass, no conductor and no singers. No one has been able to match that to this day.

You’re from America yourself, have studied at both the Juilliard School in New York and the Mozarteum in Salzburg and have been a member of the quartet since 2002. What was the selection process like?

JB While I was studying in Salzburg I received a phone call from the Cuarteto Casals to say they were looking for a new viola player. We knew each other through Rainer Schmidt, the second violinist with the Hagen Quartett, who taught me and the Cuarteto Casals. Some quartets use highly complex auditioning methods — with endless Excel tables quoting different aspects of your playing. In contrast, in our case it simply clicked immediately. We met in Cologne, played together for 45 minutes, and they asked me during the break if I’d like to be a member of the quartet. I agreed, we rehearsed a bit more and then we started to plan concerts.

Although the first year was anything but easy (I had to learn 45 string quartets), I can’t imagine not being part of the Cuarteto Casals now. In fact, there are not many quartets who have maintained the same configuration for as long as we have: almost 18 years.

Beethoven’s string quartets will dialogue with several contemporary compositions for string quartet, which you commissioned. How did you select the composers?

JB We aimed stylistically for the broadest possible response to Beethoven’s string quartets. Lucio Franco Amanti and Giovanni Sollima, for example, wrote jazz-influenced, very accessible and humorous music — without being superficial — while at the other end of the spectrum Aureliano Cattaneo and Benet Casablanca composed music that was headstrong in the best sense of the word, and which you really had to concentrate on. Some of these composers were friends; others were people we admired, while others again were recommended to us by the venues we worked with.

Stravinsky said that Beethoven’s late string quartets – in particular the Große Fuge – will continue to be modern for all eternity. Where does this enthusiasm come from?

JB Beethoven clearly composed his first six string quartets, Op. 18, in the tradition of Haydn and Mozart. You can hear the seeds of what is to come, but even so these works are clearly based on an 18th-century model,

The Cuarteto Casals sound – which is praised in just about every review – is due in part to the instruments and bows you use. How do you achieve that?

independence declared. That was actually when we started to play our Beethoven cycle.

It was a very tense situation. Today, there is still a large section of the Catalan population that would like to be able to vote but the Spanish government maintains a firm grip. Our opinion on the matter? That is too complex to simply sum up in a brief statement. In any case, we’re proud of the Spanish tradition of which we are part, as well as our role as ambassadors for Catalan culture.

JB The ideal sound for us is the way a quartet would have sounded in Beethoven’s time.

Or how we think it would have sounded.

On the basis of the information available, we try to approach that ideal. We used to experiment a lot, years ago, for example with catgut strings. But, because we play such a mixed programme — Beethoven and contemporary music — and because we have to retune quickly, catgut was not an option in the end. So we went looking for strings that could approximate the sound of catgut but also sound modern. We’re always really pleased if musicians in the audience ask us if we are using catgut strings. Our sound is also largely determined by our use of historical bows. This doesn’t mean that we use bows from the 18th century but that they have been made in exactly the same way, using exactly the same materials.

Beethoven’s relationship with the political situation of his time is the stuff of legend: in a short space of time his admiration for Napoleon turned into utter contempt. You could even associate the sudden sonic eruptions in the string quartets of his middle period with the bombardment of Vienna in 1809.

JB Indeed. On the other hand – and this is a nice quote from Beethoven, which I read in the fall of 2017 — he once wrote to a friend: “I will not talk about kings and their empires: there is enough in the newspapers about that. What I prefer instead is the empire of the mind.”

It seemed remarkable to us that in 2017, during such a tense, chaotic and difficult situation, our string quartets were very warmly received — as if people genuinely needed them amid the turmoil. What we hope is that the string quartets we perform can serve as a model for positive dialogue: a way of living together that respects every voice and holds cooperation in high regard.

On the one hand you sometimes play the Stradivarius instruments from the collection of the Spanish royal family, while on the other you have won an award for promoting Catalan culture.

Does the Catalan question make this awkward?

JB The Catalan question is indeed a controversial issue. However, less so than in the fall of 2017, when the referendum was held and

In 1997 in Madrid opgericht, besloot Cuarteto Casals haar 20ste verjaardag te vieren met een ambitieus meerjarenproject: de uitvoering van Beethovens integrale strijkkwartetten in Europa, Azië en Latijns-Amerika, telkens in een reeks van zes concerten en in combinatie met zes nieuwe composities voor strijkkwartet. Andere highlights van het komende seizoen zijn uitvoeringen van de late strijkkwartetten van Mozart en enkele concerten rond Hongaarse componisten als Bartók, Ligeti en Kurtág.
