In the annals of American history, the California Vaqueros hold a unique and enduring place. These skilled horsemen, often referred to as the "cowboys of the West," played a pivotal role in shaping the culture and economy of California. As we embark on a journey through the past, we will explore the rich history of the California Vaqueros, tracing their roots from the early Spanish colonial period to their lasting impact on the Golden State's ranching traditions.

The origins of the California Vaqueros can be traced back to the 18th century when Spanish explorers and settlers established missions and ranchos in California. The Spanish brought with them a deep tradition of horsemanship, cattle ranching, and cattle herding. To manage the vast herds of cattle, they relied on skilled horsemen known as "vaqueros."

Vaqueros, derived from the Spanish word "vacas" (cows), were experts in the art of cattle handling, including roping, branding, and driving cattle long distances. They developed a distinctive style of riding, using a reata (a braided rawhide rope) and spade bits, a style that would later influence American cowboys.

With the end of Spanish rule in California and the transition to Mexican control in the early 19th century, the vaquero tradition continued to flourish. Mexican ranchos expanded across the landscape, and the vaqueros played an essential role in maintaining their success. The vaqueros' skills in roping and riding became legendary, and their influence extended beyond ranching, impacting Californian culture.

The mid-19th century brought significant changes to California with the influx of American settlers during the Gold Rush.

About 4 years ago I had just recently gotten out of treatment for an eating disorder and was looking for a reason to keep going. I had decided that I was gonna buy my next horse as I recently had to part ways with my previous horse. Going into the horse shopping process I was looking for something that wasn't gray, wasn’t a mare, was over 16 hands, and was a schoolmaster. But early September of 2019 I ended up falling in love with a horse that was everything I didn’t want. Rogue is a petite gray mare that was freshly out of the wild when I went to see her. She’s what is considered a “three striker” so basically, she went through three auctions and no one wanted her so she was thrown in a feedlot to rot. It was probably the worst ride I had ever had on a horse to be honest but after our ride she put her head on my shoulder and fell asleep. After that there were no questions about it, she was coming home with me.

On September 9th of 2019 Rogue hopped on a trailer and came home with me. A week into having her she went dead lame and we found out she had fractured her side bone on KISMET MAGAZINE

her front, right hoof, so for the next 3 months I hand walked her for multiple hours every day. I was definitely upset that we couldn’t ride but the time we spent on the ground together definitely strengthened our relationship.

For the next three and a half years we really struggled under saddle. Rogue was basically unrideable, she threw me off more times than I can count, and multiple trainers told me to give up on her and just sell her. I’ve spent more tears over this horse than anything else in my life. In my heart I knew Rogue could be something amazing so in February of this year I moved Rogue to Silver Lining Stables in Moorpark California. We’ve been here less than a year and Jenna, the head trainer at Silver Lining Stables, has taken Rogue and done a complete one eighty. She now goes on trail, goes to shows like a seasoned pro, jumps around amazingly, and genuinely acts like a lesson pony. Every show she’s gone to she’s come home with multiple blue ribbons. She has truly become everything I knew and hoped she could be, and it is all

Even though Rogue definitely wasn’t what I was looking for when I originally went to buy a horse, she was everything I needed. She’s taught me so many life lessons that a “made horse” never would have taught me. Mustangs can be a challenging breed but with the right people they are the most loyal and talented horses. I am so glad I didn’t listen to everyone that told me to give up on this special mare, because she has become my absolute dream horse and she will be with me to her last breath. This horse took me out of one of the worst places in my life and I’ll truly never be able to thank her enough for that. @rogue_equestrian

Jenna Presley @silverliningstablesca

Jenna Presley is a forever horse lover and was introduced to riding early, and like most little girls fell in love with horses. Jenna started out riding western and going to gymkhanas, but after watching a Grand Prix she knew in her heart she was a jumper. She then dedicated her life to jumping, winning numerous championships, saddles, and even a golf cart.

Jenna has worked with many different breeds, and ages of horses and is currently working with a few rescue horses. She started and trained her own horse Mia as a 2yr old and had a very successful career with her winning even more championships in the equitation and jumper ring. Mia had a foal in 2015 and Jenna is now training her gorgeous black filly.

Jenna started her own training business called Silver Lining Stables, in Moorpark, California.

She trains everything from baby thoroughbreds, fresh off the track, to warmblood imports. She specializes in everything from hunter/jumpers, to dressage and eventing. Her clients range from kids that are sitting on a horse for the first time to riders that are going to A circuit shows! She makes it KISMET MAGAZINE

her mission to treat every client and horse as the individuals they are to find the right program and techniques that work for each pair to help them reach their full potential!

Emily and Sarah from Sisters Horsing Around have ridden, worked with, trained, and owned many horses. But for Emily, the Mustangs have been her favorite.

Truthfully, I feel called to work with mustangs. Mustangs are beautiful, strong, spirited, and independent. They are also intelligent, intuitive, sweet, and funny, with loads of personality. When I am with them, I feel peaceful and at home. There is something about them that is both exhilarating and relaxing. I can’t imagine life without my mustangs, they have become a part of who I am. Between the two of us, Sarah and I have had 12 mustangs to date, from both the BLM and the US Forest Service.

The Bureau of Land Management and The United States Forest Service are tasked with managing wild horses and burros on public lands across 10 western states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, and Wyoming. The mustangs in California are unique because they are largely managed by the US Forest Service. Mustangs managed by the Forest Service are not branded like their BLM counterparts, so they can easily blend in the pasture of their new homes or even in the show ring. The US Forest Service is responsible for managing the nation's wild horses and burros on National Forest System lands. The Forest Service manages 34 active wild horse or burro territories in Arizona, California, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, and Utah.

On January 3rd, 2023, I (Emily) bought 3 geldings during an online adoption event, from a Wild Horse Territory called Devil’s Garden Plateau in California. Devil’s Garden Plateau is the largest wild horse territory managed by the Forest Service in size and wild horse population. I had actually been interested in getting a wild horse from Devil’s Garden even before getting our very first mustangs from the BLM. I really liked the horses I had seen from Devil’s Garden in past KISMET MAGAZINE

years. I liked their builds and their personalities. So after having worked with several mustangs in the past few years, I decided that I wanted to go for a Devil’s Garden mustang next. So, in October of 2022, I had been following updates of the horses that had been gathered from Devils Garden. There were a host of mares and geldings, both young and old. I saw several horses that I liked and made all the necessary arrangements.

Acquiring horses from Devils Garden through the Forestry Service is a different process than from the Bureau of Land Management. In order to adopt or purchase a Devil’s Garden wild horse, you must first submit either an adoption application if you want to adopt or you must submit a request to purchase if you want to buy one. All horses of any age are available to adopt, however, unlike the BLM, only horses that are 10 years old and older are available to purchase. No horse under the age of 10 may be purchased. With both the adoption and purchase request you must specify the number of horses that you want to get. Once approved, you may then participate in their adoption/sales event. The event starts on a specific day at a specific time. Prior to that day, Devil’s Garden provides information about horses that are available to adopt or purchase so that you can decide which horses you are interested in getting. You must then fill out a selection form with the tag numbers of the horses that you are interested in either adopting or purchasing. Then when the event starts, you must email your selection form to the email address provided by the Forestry service.

The horses are then adopted or sold on a first come, first served basis to approved adopters or buyers. This means that the mustang placements occur in the order that they have received the emailed selection forms.

When the time came to participate in the event, I had been following the progress of the horses gathered in 2022 for 3 months. I had seen that there was going to be a pickup location on the east coast, so I really felt like this was a perfect chance to finally purchase a Devil’s Garden mustang. I emailed my selection form with 11 horses I had picked out in order of preference as soon as the event started, which was 8 am Pacific Standard Time, but it was 11 am for me. I had to wait a couple of days as they were overloaded with selection forms. When I finally heard back, I was elated and disappointed all at the same time. I had not gotten my top two picks, but my third, fourth, and sixth picks were available to me along with a few others from my selection list of 11 horses. My

original plan was to get a mix of mares and geldings, but Sarah convinced me to go with all geldings this time. So out of 11 horses, I got first dibs on 6 of them. Out of those 6, I decided that I would get tag #5634, tag #5559, and tag #5546.

Tag #5634 was my third pick, but he was the very first gelding from the older horses group that caught my eye. It was something about his eyes that drew me to him. I really liked how he was built. He looked like he had some Spanish influence in his build, and looked like he would do well doing Working Equitation. I talked about him for days on end. He was a 10 year old, 15hh Liver chestnut. The corral's notes stated that he was dominant with other horses but calm with caretakers. His video showed him trotting out the chute, taking care when he neared the banner on the panel. He had a name given to him by the corrals, it was Theo. When I got the email saying that I had won first dibs on this horse, I was so disappointed. I had only remembered him by his corral name, so when I saw his number, I thought that I had lost the opportunity to get the first gelding that I have ever truly set both my heart and mind on in a long time. And when I began looking at the photos and saw that Theo was #5634, I was elated beyond words! I renamed Theo, Valiente. I wanted a different name that was still strong but that would also honor and reflect the Spanish influence I could see in his build. So Valiente means brave in Spanish, which I feel is fitting for him based on the definition for brave, which means "ready to face and endure danger and pain, showing courage."

Tag #5546 was my fourth pick. He was a 13 year old, 14.3-15hh bright red sorrel. The corral notes stated that he was very calm and his video showed how quiet he was when he walked out of the chute. I didn’t find this out about him until I picked him up, but he was also given a name by the corrals, it was Rojo.

could see his personality shine through his photos and I loved that about him. As time went on, I kept thinking about him so much that I had dreams about him. I named Tag #5546, Rohan. The name comes from the movie Lord of the Rings, and means "Red-haired".

Which is perfect for him since he is red, and it matches perfectly well with his corral name Rojo.

Tag #5559 was my sixth pick. He was a 10 year old 15.3 hh bay gelding. He had no notes in his listing, and when I watched his video he practically shot out of the chute like a bullet. I actually didn't really think much about this horse. He was big, stocky, and built fairly well. I thought he looked a bit odd though, because he had a neck that went on and on for days, and ears that were two different sizes. Both Sarah and our mom really liked him and said that I should get him. They were actually quite shocked that I was going to pass on him. I had been in the market for a large horse for several years, but I really wanted a mare instead. I had my sights on a palomino mare, named Shoes by the corral, that was 15.3h too. She was built fairly well but had huge withers. I had her listed which made Sarah question if I was sane. I told her that if I got 5546, Theo, and/or some other horse (that I have since forgotten), then I would get him. Which because I had gotten Theo and 5546, I compromised on another mare that I was interested in, and got him.

I named Tag #5559, Brego. It was a name suggestion by my brother, and it just seemed to fit him perfectly as his namesake was also a bay horse in the movie Lord of the Rings. Brego means "prince, lord, ruler" It took several weeks for Devil’s Garden to finalize everything because there were weather considerations, making sure the horses were prepared to travel, health certificates to obtain, and coordination with the various pickup locations that the horses were requested to go to. I chose to pick up my horses in Huntingdon, PA on March 9th, 2023 at Gentled Hearts Stables. The road trip from Virginia to Pennsylvania was a 10 hour round-trip.

Since bringing them home, training them has been up and down.

I had expected that since I got older mustangs. Older mustangs tend to take a longer time to gentle and come around because they have been in the wild longer and are more set in their ways. My relationship with each has been interesting to say the least. They have so much personality! I knew from the beginning that Valiente was going to take a long time. He has a strong personality that borders along the lines of haughtiness, lol. He is really expressive with his face. It's actually quite funny because he will sit and stare at you disdainfully, then will act like you are not there. As long as you're not doing anything scary or new, he could care less about people. But I really do appreciate that he has come to accept me as HIS caretaker. I emphasize “his” because hedoesn’t fully trust

people yet and so far I am the only one who he trusts.

Rohan is as sweet as I thought he would be, but our relationship has been a bit rocky.

Rohan loves Sarah, he will nicker to her when he sees her, let her touch him, and will follow her up and down the front of his pen. Me on the other hand, he didn’t really like me much at first. Mainly because I don’t use/give out treats like Sarah does with him. But Rohan is coming around more and more, as I have adjusted to his preferences.

As for Brego, he has been really something. Brego has a strong personality too, but where he differs from Valiente is that Brego has a quiet confidence about him. I am actually quite surprised how he has turned out. I didn’t really expect him to go the way he has. In the beginning, he got used to my presence fairly quickly but he was no allowing me to touch him. I could walk behind him and around him, I could move him away from me or other objects, I could even stand pretty close to him. But the moment I reached my hand out to me, he would shoot me angry glances and threaten/try to bite me. He was never extremely forceful with me, but it was obvious what he was conveying to me. I began to like this big horse, and would talk to him about anything and nothing in particular. I remember telling him that I wish I could give him a big hug because he looked like a huggable horse, but I knew he wouldn’t let me, not for a long time at least. After having him for 3 months, and after many failed attempts to touch him, my opportunity came on Mother’s day. All the horses had been shedding out, but Brego still had a ways to go. He had been scratching himself a lot along the sides of his corral as best he could but he could not satisfy the itch. I was in his corral with him cleaning it out, when I decided that I would offer to help him. At first he didn’t really know what to think when I reached my training stick out to touch him, KISMET MAGAZINE

and quickly moved away. I tried again, let him sniff it and then touched the spot he was scratching. I then began to scratch him with the butt-end of the stick and he stood there quietly. I could tell that he was contemplating it all, then he walked away. Once he stopped, I approached him again and continued. I then began to creep my hand closer to his body as I continued scratching until I was completely scratching his body with my hand. That day completely changed the trajectory of our whole relationship. He literally went from zero to 100 in a matter of minutes! Now I can not spend enough time with him. I could literally scratch him for 20 minutes and he still wants more! I could spend hours with him, and he still want me to touch, scratch, and hang out with me. He is smart, a quick learner, quiet, he is a thinker, and the best part is that he loves me! Every time I am outside near the corrals, he comes over to his gate and watches my every movement. He even gets upset if I don’t pet him. He is like a big dog, lol! It blows my mind how much this horse has accepted domestic life, and accepted me and my family.

And to think, the horse that has changed my mind about geldings, is the very horse that I was going to pass on. I am a mare person through and through. I LOVE mares! I love how opinionated they can be, their intelligence, their work ethic, how they give their all when they trust you, their quirks, their personalities, literally everything! But now I understand what it means to love and be loved by a gelding. Honestly, it's amazing how the Lord works things out for our good. I would have never imagined that he would have been everything I wanted and was looking for.

Many people have asked me “what is my favorite HMA?” (Herd Management Area), and that is a little hard to answer. I have met, owned, and worked with many mustangs from different areas in different states, that I can’t really list one. Brego is one special horse, and he is from Devil’s Garden, California. I have my first Mustang that makes my heart flutter every time I see her that I named High Hopes, and she is from North Hills, in Utah. There was Sarah’s TIP Challenge filly, Talitha from Lost Creek, Nevada. She was the best young horse I had met in my life. I have a young gelding that I am currently training named Rafiki, from Spruce-Pequop, Nevada, and he is so friendly and comical. I worked with a little filly that I call Ruth, in NC at an adoption event for the BLM. She was from Salt Wells, Wyoming and she went from wild to mild in literally an hour.

There was another young gelding in NC, #0586, whose heart and soul could be seen through his eyes. I just pet and scratched him through the fence, and within 15 mins he was following me around.

He too was from Wyoming. So you see, I can’t name one area because so many mustangs have imprinted on my heart in a way that I can hardly explain. All I know is that I feel called to be and work with them, and I want to have mustangs be a part of my life, for the rest of my life.

Julie Harris, Mom of the sister duo Emily and Sarah is the backbone and the “Momager” of the channel sisters horsing around. It is because of Sarah and Emily’s mom that the seed for the channel was planted and since its beginnings she has done whatever possible to help her two girls see their dreams flourish. Although Julie is never one for getting in front of the camera, she is often seen hauling around camera gear and snapping as many moments as possible, hence the nickname “Mama Paparazzi”. From helping haul horses, to figuring out horse show entries Julie really does it all and has never stopped being her daughter’s number one cheerleader. She also finds it important to instill good values in her children, such as hard work, faith, and perseverance. Emily and Sarah credit their mother, along with their faith in God for where they are today.

Regina Ferguson is a singer-songwriter based in Topanga, California. A classically trained vocalist, she shifted her focus to writing music after studying, all the while cutting her teeth as a jazz and wedding singer.

After spending years performing extensively in the Southeastern US, she made the move to Los Angeles to immerse herself in industry talent. Through her expansive travels and time living in Topanga Canyon, Regina found inspiration for her debut album, 'Fortune.' Recorded fully analog in Los Angeles with producer Matt Linesch, Regina describes 'Fortune' as "three chords and the truth with a heavy dose of folk rock."

On the heels of her debut album, Regina is quickly making a name for herself in the Americana music scene. Just this year, she performed at the Topanga Days Festival, opened for Lord Huron at the Wildlands Festival, and opened for The Wallflowers in San Diego—all of which were sold out. EAT LIKE A HORSE

Apple Cider A Horse Inspired Drink FOR HUMANS

3-4 lbs Apples (mixed variety, roughly quartered) ½ Cup Brown Sugar Sweetener (optional & to taste, use any sweetener of choice) 1 Medium Orange (optional) 4 Cinnamon Sticks 1 TB Whole Cloves 1 Whole Vanilla Bean (sliced lengthwise) Fresh Filtered Water Core and roughly quarter or chop the apples before adding them along with the spices, and flavorings to a large 8-quart stockpot. Cover the contents with water, leaving an inch or two of space from the top of the pot.

Cover and bring the pot to a simmer over high heat. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for 2-4 hours until the apples are soft.

Mash the apples with a potato masher or wooden spoon to release all juices and flavors. Cover the pot again and simmer for another 1-2 hours.

Carefully remove the solids from the cider with a fine mesh strainer, cheesecloth, or fine mesh skimmer.

Set the solids aside for applesauce, compost, or discard.

Taste test the cider for sweetness and adjust as needed. Serve warm from the pot or chill in the fridge overnight for a cold cider.

There’s plenty I have experienced as a competitor, coach, official and parent of skating athletes, including organizational politics and competitive parents. Entering the horse world, I didn’t expect anything different, and knew I didn’t have to understand horse shows and training particulars to know how to navigate those sometimes, difficult waters.

I did spend a lot of time learning the ins and outs of showing and training and daily barn life, so I could have conversations with Genevieve, and eventually be of actual help to her. After therapy ended, Genevieve’s coach, Megan McQueeney, explained some basic competition and lessons she offered, and we decided to pursue them. Genevieve fell in love with competing, so we kept going. It took a while to understand the overall path and opportunities, but once we did, Genevieve was more determined than ever to get to the top of that ‘food chain’. Despite her Cerebral Palsy and other diagnoses, she has never thought of herself as a disabled rider. She knows her physical challenges and works very diligently to make them less challenging. She reformulates her goals from time to time and has incredible discipline. I am in awe of her commitment. She takes it all in stride when we hit a speed bump, thoughtfully making the next decision and goal. To say having horses in her life has made a difference is a gross understatement. It saved us both in countless ways.

Have you enjoyed the experience?

I have enjoyed the experience in watching Genevieve flourish and grow. Her maturity level has always been higher than her age.

Though when she was a small, underdeveloped baby, and as a micro-preemie triplet, I could not have known whether or not she would be more impaired than she actually is now.

What I have enjoyed is the front row seat to her self-discovery on horses. The gift that horses have given her is nothing short of a miracle to me. While I was learning how to KISMET MAGAZINE

manage three NICU babies, endless medical appointments and multiple brain surgeries for one of her brothers, lamenting that I had little time to be part of local mom groups/play dates, I also realized that my children had the same stubborn streak I have. Watching them fight to live for three months in two different NICUs, and later watching them grow with determination and strength, I saw in them what I know is in me. I don’t give up.

I have enjoyed the experience thus far for many reasons. Not the least of which is the individual time I have had with my only daughter. Teaching her how to travel, watching shows together on road trips, helping her learn how to navigate the world. These are treasured times for me. It’s always a treat to watch her pursue her sport. With or without a ribbon, she loves horses, and that is always the bottom line. That she gets to participate in something very few people achieve is exciting.

She is one of 13 people in the U.S. qualified to even consider pursuing a Paralympic team spot in the future. She achieved a Team USA show team designation at 14 years old. The accolades are exciting, and she will keep pursuing her goals. The part that matters most to me though, is being in the front row seat to her grit, determination, and soul. Being whatever she needs when she gets off the horse, being there with her, for her or just nearby, is my greatest gift. @gr_paraequestrian

Umber Ahmad's journey from financial consultant to pioneering pastry chef is nothing short of exceptional. Renowned for her MahZe-Dahr Bakery in New York City, Umber's path is marked by creativity, culinary brilliance, and a profound connection to her heritage.

Born to Pakistani immigrants, Umber grew up in Marquette, Michigan, where her affinity for baking was cultivated by her Finnish nanny's Nordic bread-making traditions.

Baking became her peaceful refuge, a canvas for her scientific curiosity. Throughout family travels, Umber's parents encouraged her to identify the universal threads that weave through diverse cuisines. The realization that different cultures employed similar ingredients in distinct ways led her to appreciate food as a unifying force.

Umber's professional journey took her through various landscapes before her baking passion took center stage. Armed with degrees from MIT and the University of Michigan, coupled with an MBA from Wharton, she ventured into finance, aviation, and even professional violin playing. However, it was her baking prowess that truly set her apart.

Her baking journey took a pivotal turn when her client, Tom Colicchio, tasted her creations, leading to her induction into his Colicchio Discoveries group. This marked the beginning of Umber's transformation from financial consultant to esteemed pastry chef.

In 2013, Umber established Mah-Ze-Dahr, an online bakery that rapidly garnered major wholesale clients, including JetBlue, Intelligentsia Coffee, and Williams-Sonoma.

With a goal to have her own retail space, she eventually opened her flagship café in New York City's West Village. Here, her delectable creations draw inspiration from her diverse background, blending Middle Eastern and Nordic flavors to create unique culinary experiences.

Umber's passion isn't just about crafting mouthwatering desserts; it's about telling stories through flavors. Her pastry innovations encompass French brioche infused with rosewater and rich brownies, embodying her vision of a global taste journey. Her heritage plays a significant role in her culinary narrative, with Pakistani and Finnish influences finding harmonious expression in her creations.

psyche consists of two layers: the unconscious the background of the painting with its hidden shapes and subtle color shadings - and conscious: the forms, ornaments and embellishments on the forefront of the painting. psyche is meant to visually communicate how we all are only displaying (consciously) parts of our complete self, featuring only certain aspects of ourselves to our respective audiences, while keeping most of our identities hidden and unutilized in our unconscious.

The Klimt-esce feel of the painting is on purpose.
