Scarlet Walker

Horses for Productions

Meet Scarlet Walker also known as Malibu Cowgirl! She is the face behind a Los Angelesbased company called Horses for Productions. They provide horses for the film industry and the family has been in the business for over 30 years. Scarlet grew up in the hills of Malibu galloping around on ponies bareback! Her first love for horses started most likely in the womb! She comes from a long line of horse crazed family members Her mom and dad were both horse lovers and riders, as well as her grandparents on both sides. Her grandfather was even the Mounted sheriff of Malibu Wayback in the day. Her mom was an avid ladies steeplechase rider, show jumper, eventer as well as a farrier Both her grandmothers were riders too doing everything from gymkhanas to endurance races and her dad was a professional horse hauler for many years. She likes to joke that loving horses was just in her blood! When she is not riding, working on the ranch, or on set, she works at a small animal vet clinic as a vet tech and has done so for 16 years.

Scarlet sat on her first horse when she was

6 weeks old and her parents entered her in her first leadline class at a horse show when she was just under 2 yrs old. She’s dabbed her toes in a little bit of every type of discipline, mainly hunters and jumpers, as well as sorting and barrel racing. She has won many ribbons, championships, prize money and buckles over the years.

35 years ago her mother, who is horse crazy as they come, brought a horse to a friends music video, what she didn’t realize then was that would turn into a successful family run business. Her mom, Judy, ended up working on many big name music videos in the 90s and countless photoshoots and commercials Scarlet‘s first time on set was at the age of five where her mom was able to bring her on to act as a peasant child in a medieval themed movie that she was providing horses and dogs for, even at that young of an age Scarlet loved set life!

Over the past 15 years Horses for Productions has bloomed exponentially. They have worked with the top names in showbiz, including Beyoncé on four separate occasions, Lady Gaga, Kendall and Kylie Jenner, Niki

https://youtu.be/f

Minaj, Metallica, The Rock, Ryan Renolds, Snoop dogg, even providing horses for the Oscars the past two years in a row. Their horses have been in countless magazines, commercials and live events. Some of their work includes top brands like AT&T, Lancome, Toyota, Rolling Stones magazine, Dior and Vogue, even promotions for Yellowstone. “We love doing music, videos, and high fashion print work”, says Scarlet, “it’s artistic and always something new and different!”

Scarlet says one of her favorite memories was working on Beyoncé’s lemonade album for her song “Daddy’s Lesson”, “we had shot the scenes we needed to get with Beyoncé on the horse, she then asked if she could continue riding the horse back to base camp (where the rest of the crew was) this was close to a mile away, at first I thought she was joking but quickly realized she was dead serious! We agreed and my self and another wrangler walked back along side her while a camera car drove in front, we were at a beautiful ranch and she sang and serenaded us the whole time while riding There was only about 5 of us there, her voice was so beautiful and although of course I was nervous ‘Queen B’ was out in the wilderness on one of my horses, he took amazing care of her while riding down the dusty trail, it was extremely peaceful and a moment I will never forget”

“Another fun memory was shooting a Gucci campaign with another horse company, we had our white miniature horse that we had taught to ride in the front seat in a custom convertible car We were driving down Sunset boulevard at rush hour traffic with the pony in the front seat, they had closed down one side of the street for us to film on, but the other had regular traffic and pedestrians on it, people were freaking out seeing a pony and model in the car driving down the street!! The mini horse, Sprinkles (who was a kill pen rescue) was so good and he loved the wind in his hair.”

Scarlet has got the opportunity to stunt double on many occasions on set and get to play some really fun roles. Including doubling for Gigi Hadid, been in many music videos and even getting to jump over people in the Jack ass 4 5 movie She says “Sometimes it’s planned out and there are many prep days that go into it, but sometimes we get to set and the actor who said they can ride truthfully can’t, at that moment we have to improvise and decide what is the safest for all involved and that often includes using my self or one of our wranglers to stunt double for talent ”

“Sometimes we have one chicken on set, and sometimes it’s 10 Galloping Horses with stunts. It’s very unpredictable how often we work, sometimes there’s no jobs for a few weeks and sometimes we’re on set every day straight for a week I’m so fortunate to have my job at the vet clinic to keep income when the production world is slow, as any horse person knows horses are not cheap!”

They have over 25 horses at their family ran back yard ranch, Most of the horses are production or show horses, while some are just retired production horses that are there to live out their days!

Some of the horses are trained to do specialty tricks like laying down or rearing, but what the most important job of Production Horses is, is to be able to be calm and safe for talent to sit on or ride while there is lots of equipment, crowds or other intimidation aspects in close proximity around them.

Sometimes the talent has never even been on a horse before and they are expected to be in crazy wardrobe with loud music in a studio on a horse for their first time. Their horses have to be able to adapt to the situation and Scarlet and her wranglers have to be able to know the limits of that horse and make sure the horse and everyone on set feels safe!

Scarlet says it takes an extremely special horse to be a production horse, so many people tell me “my horse is pretty you should use it in movies”, but what they don’t see is the hours of dedicated training that goes into making sure these horses are 100% safe for talent and crew as well as for the horse. “We have to know exactly what that horse can and can’t do before going to set. Oftentimes production horses are asked to do things that are very hard to prepare for, although we will always do our best to prepare for a scene our horses have to trust us 100% that the situation we put them in is not going to hurt them.” They spend countless hours training and working with their horses to ensure they have done everything to set them up to succeed on set Oftentimes this includes getting them used to things that could be very scary to the average horse like drones, fire, large screaming crowds, thick smoke and everything in between! “Our horses must enjoy being on set and their job, there is no way to convince a 1200lbs animal to do something on the spot it doesn’t want to, it’s a battle you are not going to win, they have to want to be there and work” says scarlets boyfriend, Stephan.

Scarlet says she is very fortunate that her boyfriend is horse crazy too, he grew up in the Mid west with horses and then moved to LA when he landed a role in a big movie. He is one of her main wranglers on set and does a great job helping train the horses. She says “I am lucky to have found someone that understands my life, and how horse obsessed I am Most guys would think I’m crazy spending as many hours at the ranch as I do, he supports it.” When they are not working with the

production horses they go to team sortings together and have won many buckles and awards.

Although some of the horses are purchased, the majority of their horses come from unwanted situations, or kill pens out of state They work hard with each horse to determine if they have the ability to be a production horse, with patience and compassion the majority of kill pen horses turn out to be wonderful horses and the ones that don’t they find new perfect homes for.

“One of my favorite questions I was asked on set was “do horses have personalities?” I was like oh do they!!! They are sassy and sweet and silly and have more personality then most dogs! I can hear any of my horses winny at the ranch and know exactly which one it was, they are all so different!” says Scarlet

The family and business was turned upside down in 2018 when the Woolsey fire destroyed their home and ranch. The horses and animals were evacuated for four weeks. Scarlet says “the horse community was absolutely amazing to us during this time We had lost everything, all of our tack, all of our ranch equipment, all of our belongings, everything. So many people donated tack and supplies to us. That is one thing we will forever grateful for. We had jobs lined up during that month so even while our lives were turned upside down and we were evacuated, we had to take horses to go do jobs. I remember having to dress a horse for a Western and used all tack that somebody had just donated to me a few days before. Although it was heartbreaking we had lost so much it was also very inspiring that people were so kind to donate such great stuff to us! My motto at that time was - The show must go on!”

There are other companies around the Los Angeles area that are in the same line of work providing horses and hoof stock for the movie industry “most of us get along with each other and often hire each other to help wrangle on jobs or hire each other's horses if needed. It’s

really nice to be able to work with like minded people, some of who have been doing this for many generations, who love horses and to be able to learn from them as well.”

“I am extremely blessed to be able to be in this line of work, I’ve been able to do some really cool things and meet some really awesome people Don’t get me wrong it can be very stressful at times and there is lots of blood, sweat and tears that goes into it, as well as many long days, But in the end I wouldn’t trade it for the world” She says.

I was born and raised in Ventura County Ca and as far as I can remember I have had a connection with animals. They were a place for me to escape and find quiet in the face of a stressful and chaotic upbringing When I was in elementary school I met a girl who I did not know at the time would change the trajectory of my life completely. She introduced me to horses. I rode as much as I could as a kid and preteen considering my family was in no place financially to buy a horse or afford consistent lessons. I found and created the opportunity where I could. When I was about 11 years old I volunteered at a wild mustang sanctuary where I fell in love with a young wild horse named Taylor I begged for her to be mine and created a vision board with all the details I wrote down how old she would be when I started her training, where I would keep her, where I would train her, the tack, and the cost. I had it all painted out and hung it above my bunkbed so I could read it every night I did not have a clue what the power of visualization and having a dream could create.

When I was 17 years old I applied for a job

at a summer camp, and guided trail ride ranch in Malibu. I spent every waking moment there riding and learning even on my days off and after hours I met a trainer named Chip Mandeville who was an astounding horseman I studied Chip, the way he carried himself around horses, the patience and feel he could offer them was mesmerizing. I wanted to be just like him. Chip began to teach me some of the most important principles that I carry to this day He told me to “set it up for them and let them find it, don’t make it happen” he would remind me to let the horses tell me what they need worked on and then help them succeed. He would say if you leave the bother in, it’s going to come back tomorrow and that it takes the time it takes Chip used to encourage me to ride as many horses as I could with the aim that I wanted to make them and myself better and with that I could succeed. People started to like what I was doing and I began to ride horses for the public The horses did the advertising for me When I was 21 every single thing I wrote on my vision board came true. I was given a 2

year old wild mustang who I call Billie, I trained her myself, at the exact facility and in the same place I said I would as a kid. I realized the power of visualization and determination How following the opportunity will lead you to your dreams. I was riding problem horses during the day going from ranch to ranch and at night I was working in a recovery center. I learned from different trainers and people in the area and soaked up as much information from everyone I met along the way. I took an internship in Montana training young rope horses when I was 24 and had the experience of a lifetime. When I came back to California I got in contact with a horse trainer in the area who allowed me to start riding at his facility and learn from him. He believed in me and reminded me every day that I CAN and that I am better than I believe. When he left that facility to retire I was able to set up full time. Today I work out of a barn in Somis where people send me horses for full time care and training. I have a special place in my heart for the rejects and the ones whose behavior makes

them misunderstood. The horses remind me constantly to slow down, that yesterday’s mess up is not todays. They are present and honest and force and control will only lead to push back, but when we present them with a better option and allow them to find that it will stick. I struggled in my younger life with discipline and purpose. I had demons to overcome and memories to heal form. My journey with horses has been as much about self-discovery and emotional growth as it has been about working and training. I try and spread the knowledge I have found with those who will listen. My journey hasn’t always been about making the best financial decisions or instant gratification I choose to follow the horses and people who need help and those with the knowledge needed to make me better and I allow God to take care of the rest.

I honestly don’t remember a time in my life without horses. I was lucky enough to grow up on the back of a horse. My nana got me on a horse taking vaulting lessons when I was just 3 yrs old My family are animal lovers but I was the only one to fully take on the horse world. In my riding career I’ve competed at dressage, hunter jumper, barrel racing, team roping and working equitation shows and jackpots. Before working at El Campeon Farms with the Santa Cruz Island horses I was living in Santa Cruz, Ca. Past jobs were giving lessons to kids and working summer camps, groom/loper for a cow horse trainer, and working with two mobile large veterinary practices one specializing in sport horses and the other working with pigs, goats, alpacas, etc.

I have two horses of my own both quarter horse mares. I’ve had scarlett for 8yrs and we’ve competed in California Gymkhana Association placing in the top ten all around Currently entering at local barrel racing jackpots. I’ve had Bluberry for about a year and I’ve have goals of taking her to races soon

as well.

Taking every opportunity to learn, even if it meant trying new things is something I’ve told myself I would do ever since I was a kid Trading chores, hacking horses, etc for lessons Learning new disciplines and riding different styles of horses is what I think has rounded me most as a rider and I’m so thankful for the opportunities I’ve had.
