Cover Concept

The transformation of a pupa into a butterfly is often used as a visual metaphor for personal growth and change. Just as the pupa transforms into a beautiful and graceful butterfly, individuals can undergo a metamorphosis and emerge as a better version of themselves. The pupal stage represents a time of incubation and growth, and the butterfly symbolizes the final result of this process - a stunning representation of beauty and resilience. This metaphor can be used to encourage people to embrace change and to see the beauty in transformation.

EDITORS COLUMN

Dear Reader,

It gives me an immense pleasure in bringing the new identity & look of our Employee House Magazine to you this year as promised earlier.

This latest edition has witnessed and undergone through a lot of transitions starting from a newly on-boarded Editorial team to getting a new brand name to introducing the interactive platform for the magazine. Therefore, I would like to take an opportunity here to thank all of you for your contributions made through articles, participations and suggestions to make this edition successful.

While extending a heartfelt gratitude to the former editorial team for their colossal contribution to the ‘Susamwad’ till date, I, along with the new Editorial Team, are ecstatic to introduce ‘Impeller’ to you.

The name ‘Impeller’ is metaphorically inspired from the Employee of Kirloskar Pneumatic itself, who, similar to Compressor’s Impeller, consistently sets oneself in motion to create desired solutions under positive pressure. And that is why the ‘Impeller’!

‘Impeller’ is literally none other than an each and every individual of the organization who is demonstrating Excellence, Integrity, Collaboration, Empathy, Value Creation & Innovative Thinking while withstanding a positive pressure through one’s day-to day activities at personal & professional front to achieve a future where performance is boundless, and achievements are limitless.

Thus, the Impeller is You & for You!

Impeller has got a new interactive dimension this time with features like videos and hyperlinks. The sole purpose is to keep enhancing the reader’s experience with the E-magazine and reducing the prints while stepping towards sustainability. So, here we handover the edition to you to enjoy all the actions that have occurred from April’22 till December’22.

LEADERSHIP ADDRESS

Dear colleagues,

Ibring you greetings from the Chairman and the Board of Directors. We have had a good nine months and we look forward to having a great year as we go forward. I am talking to you on the occasion of the rebranding and launch of our new house magazine with the name ‘Impeller’. I wish the editorial team headed by Anuradha and the HR department all the very best in this new initiative.

A House Magazine is an important medium of communication. We share in this, the good things that happen in the company at an individual level, at an organizational level and with the society at large. I'm sure that the name ‘Impeller’ would itself give it a new impetus to deliver superior and deep communication on these subjects. Change is literally simple but it’s incremental. Transformation is dramatic. It makes a fundamental difference from what we started with and where we get to. We at KPCL have been changing and growing over a period of time. It's now time for us to make the transformative change. It's time for us now to morph into a beautiful butterfly delivering superior performance and results to the company, for ourselves and for the investors at Large.

What are the three things that I am looking forward to from the team here? First is a passionate commitment for growth and success. Most times we all do, what is good and leave the results to happen as they can. I think we must move on and ensure results do happen. In the case of a butterfly, I think you might have all realized that as the pupa evolves into a caterpillar and breaks out and comes in it actually reduces its body mass by almost 40 to 50 percent before it can become a butterfly and fly. If anybody does a simple thing like opening up the pupa and allowing it to escape, it would remain the rest of its life just as a worm on the ground. Seems true in all our case; transformative change has to come from within; we have to be willing to go through the pain of a transformation.

I would urge each of you to choose difficult targets and work on it both at a personal level and at a professional level and see that you make this transformation.

I look forward to working with all of you and to see how we can make Kirloskar a beautiful butterfly going forward. Thank you.

In the ACD machine shop, a polytest unit is mounted near the CLC machine for taking air samples. Polytest unit is electrically operated equipment that takes air in for samples to identify air quality.

When I was working on the machine, which is placed next to the poly test equipment, I observed smoke coming out of it, so I used a fire extinguisher to extinguish the smoke and fire. This has avoided the major Fire accident.

When I was working on the 51 /07 Jyoti machine, I heard a noise and smell from the back of the machine so I immediately went to the back of the machine and saw there was a fire. I immediately called the Supervisor and Mr. Ganesh Mokate (Admin & Security Officer) made them aware about the situation. Later, we extinguished the fire and avoided the possibly major fire incident.

Aiming Customer Centricity

Kirloskar Pneumatic Company bagged the project GPS, amidst large number of gas compressor package providers in the market. The end client being European; it was their first time association with an Indian company. The “Recycle Gas Compressor Package at Tawke Gas Injection Gas Facility Iraq” 4-stage reciprocating compressor package driven by VFD operated electric motor handling a sour service application of two different service streams under one package consisting of variety of battery limits, spec breaks, extreme ambient and operating conditions with stringent customer requirements and fast track delivery. Client had specific dimensional limits for the package, Auto-louver arrangement for Air cooled heat exchanger to ensure the smooth operation of package under extreme ambient conditions”. Being a sour service application, NACE compliance as per MR 0175 was necessary for every component.

PGS- D&D had a challenge of submitting 60+ documents in three month period along with major equipment selection, sizing, Data sheet approval and finalization. NACE compliance of all the materials and volatile market conditions due to undergoing Ukraine-Russia war procurement team had a challenge of their own. However, while overcoming these difficulties together, project team fabricated the piping spools separately based on arrival of material in lots instead of waiting for the arrival of the entire material. This

strategic planning didn’t let delivery of components affect the entire progress of the project.

This combined effort and strategic planning of PGS team led the project test ready within 9 months. After satisfying the punch points raised during Mechanical Test Run by consultant & endcustomer, package was ready for shipping along with spares. The package was shipped by a charted ship to Kyrgyzstan port. And from there via road package reached the site location crossing the international borders. Both the packages are under erection stage. The technical support required at site location is being provided.

Though the project had its own challenges, it has been a great learning experience for the entire PGS team. We adopted customer centric approach right from the beginning of the project, aligned our processes to overcome the challenges which came during the lifecycle of the project. We are proud that the holistic approach has enabled us to deliver the packages meeting all the quality standards as required by the customer.

Accelerating the New Product Development Performance test Bench Setup

Over the past few decades, the number of new product introductions in every sector has increased dramatically as the industry became more aware of the importance of new products to the businesses. Today we are living in the era of globalization. Technology is evolving rapidly, customer behavior and preferences are changing and the product life cycle is shortened therefore successful new product development is vital to the sustainable growth of any business. Kirloskar Pneumatic Company has been serving the refrigeration industry for more than six decades. The company has supplied many innovative products and refrigeration systems for various industrial applications. However, to keep pace with rapidly changing technology and increasing global competition, the organization decided to invest aggressively in new product development.

before any design change can be implemented. The compressor requires the entire refrigeration system to operate, so the compressors need to be installed at customers’ sites for testing purposes.

Actually conducting any test at site requires a lot of time and effort as many people are involved for product installation, monitoring and to get the right feedback about the product. In a way, identifying sites for product testing and conducting on-site tests has been the biggest challenge for years. Therefore the team has collectively decided to develop a test bench for product performance testing to reduce NPD cycle time. A team is formed to achieve the project goal 'Design & Develop a Refrigeration System for Performance testing of Compressors'. The objective was to have a test bench to determine the COP (coefficient of performance)

compressors.

to test existing validate design changes prior to implementation. In this project

the biggest challenge for the process designer was to design a system for single and two stage compressors and that too for compressors of different flow rate capacities. Refrigeration compressors can be operated at different evaporating temperatures and condensing temperatures, and therefore system design, pressure vessel & component design, selection and its integration was very important to create artificial heat load. During detailed engineering the team prepared a layout to fit the entire system into the space available for installation. Proper measurement of process parameters is essential to evaluate compressor performance. Therefore necessary instruments and controls were considered to determine the refrigeration capacity, compressor shaft power, volumetric efficiency and isentropic efficiency of the compressor. Instrumentation team successfully did integration of various control valves & electrical panels. The HMI is configured to display the complex system into useful information. HMI allow operators to start and stop the compressor, adjust set points, and perform other functions that are required to make sure the system is working properly. The process parameters like compressor mass flow rate & electrical motor input current, voltage etc required to determine compressor coefficient of performance (COP) are displayed on the dashboard. The Environment & Estate team took the responsibility of completing the civil related works to build this facility. The project management and execution team did their best to coordinate with procurement and vendors to complete this project on time. Safety has always been given top priority; accordingly the team has worked on every aspect of EHS.

TECHNOLOGY UPDATE | 15

Almost every department from ACR Saswad was involved & extended their support for this project. Interim project reviews and management support helped to achieve the project goals. Developing Compressor Performance Testing Facility is a major milestone for the ACR Division. This achievement in itself is a great team work!

After the test facility was ready, the KCX4 compressor was installed and operated for a few days. Currently Khione screw compressor series development is in progress. First screw compressor is undergoing performance testing. The performance testing will be

carried out as per the defined test plan in order to determine product performance before the product leaves the factory.

The performance test bench will be useful for achieving product quality and reliability goals. It will certainly speed up the new product design validation process and in addition the following benefits will be achieved.

• Improved customer confidence: In-house product performance testing will give the customer, OEM’s higher confidence in new products.

Digitization of Engineering Tools

• Enhanced quality and reliability: Products will be thoroughly tested for all operating duties. This in turn, results in to the better products and delighted customers.

• Reduce time to market: The new range of products will be added to the product portfolio, which in turn will create new opportunities leading to increased sales.

Our R&D Center has introduced a Engineering Calculation Tool (ECAL) which is a Centralized platform for all the engineering calculations based on Excel. On the ECAL platform, one can create a new department and upload the tools. It gives a controlled environment for tools and data security. As all the engineering tools are available at one place, one may not need to request any engineering person for the tools. ECAL has defined workflow through which users will get access to the required tool. For each tool, user will get a help file from which the user will learn and do the calculation. It is offering the process dependency than a person dependency platform. It is a paperless process for each department and reduces overall engineering calculation time by using the ECAL platform, leading to strengthening of the engineering processes.

Energy Management System – A Step towards Digitalization

Energy conservation is the need of an hour due to increasing energy cost day by day impacting bottom line of business and its direct / indirect impact on environment & mankind. But, how do we do that? The best approach is through PDCA, which starts with accurate measurement of the energy.

Earlier we used to measure electricity consumption manually. Before EMS, we used to collect kWh readings from 23 Energy meters at various locations in the plant & maintain soft record in PC. All these activities were carried out manually, we were spending about 2 Hr daily of technically skilled person to collect data & Half an hour for data entry in PC. This becomes very tedious job. There was possibility of human error while recording and entering data. There was no provision to bifurcate fixed & variable Energy consumption. Fixed energy is part of Specific energy consumption

and cannot be calculated separately. It is difficult to maintain equipment wise parameters like PF, Harmonics, current balancing etc. So, we decided to ease this process through digitalization of measuring system known as Energy Management System. Energy Management System is the system which allows to collect, process, analyse, store, monitor and generate reports of energy meters & various flow meters.

We measure the Specific Energy Consumption (SEC) i.e. Electrical energy required to produce one cylinder of compressor. It is one

of the QEOHS objective for which target taken is 150 kWh / cyl. The measurement of SEC becomes the accurate when we collect data from maximum equipments individually. We had 23 meters across plants which were insufficient to determine the equipment wise energy consumption and its impact on SEC. So we discussed with user departments of various divisions and then finalised division wise additional quantities of meters. We decided to install 63 meters in ACR equipment, 22 meters in REF project-VAC and 21 meters in PGS division. To extract these data from energy meter to computer was

TECHNOLOGY UPDATE | 17

major task. We had two options. One is to go for LAN connectivity. In this Option we had to connect 106 meters through LAN cable. Second option was to install energy meter with SIM based (Cloud) gateway. Considering Saswad plant layout, difficulties in laying the LAN cable and its maintenance, first option was not feasible. Hence, we have opted for second option. Above pic shows the data flow.

We installed all 106 meters with SIM based GATEWAY. Each energy meter Configured with cloud based software. EMS software collects 27 parameters from energy meters via serial communication through Ethernet gateways. Software provides real time, historical data with different trends using standard web browser format for 24 hours (24

X 7) 365 days. Energy consumption of all energy meters is stored & various reports are generated on real time basis. We can see all reports, real data from PC / Mobile. Before EMS, the only parameter we could see was the electricity consumption (kWh).

Electrical Load pattern of our plant is not uniform throughout the year. During HT motor testing it is at peak. With the help of EMS electrical load management become very easy. Root cause of any electronic failure can be identified by comparing real time data of Voltage, Current, Harmonics, PF etc. w.r.t failure incident time. As per the new rule of MSEDCL 1 UNIT = 1kVAh, which was earlier 1 UNIT = 1kWh. This new change in calculating energy UNIT makes

The Rising of Semiconductor

Semiconductors are the electronic devices like Diode, Transistor, LED, IC’s. If you look at our first computer back in the days, it was very bulky in weight and produced large amount of heat. And now computers these days can be carried even in our bags, thanks to the semiconductor components. Today, we work on Nano technology which is possible due to the semiconductors. Due to this Nano technology, today all equipments are becoming compact, fast, consuming low energies and also cheaper

in price. That is the reason why all electronic companies completely depend on semiconductor devices and demanding more semiconductors in market.

China, Taiwan, Vietnam and Korea are the major suppliers of semiconductors to India. Unfortunately, India lags in the establishment of semiconductor wafer fabrication (FAB) units yet – due to a weak ecosystem and shortage of resources as compared to more competitive bases like China and Vietnam.

On September 14-15, 2022, it was clarified that Vedanta and Foxconn, in a 60-40 joint venture, will be setting up India’s

it imperative to maintain power quality. If we fail to maintain the quality of energy, the consequences will be reflected in electricity bill. In energy quality PF, Harmonics, Active Energy (kWh), Apparent Energy ( kVAh), Reactive Energy ( kVArh) parameters have to be maintained. EMS software not only provides information about all these parameters but also displays its alerts.

Fixed and variable energy is being monitored separately. We are collecting data accurately from last two months and SEC has shown improvement of 13 kWh/Cyl only because the correct measurement.

Now the next step is to find out energy intensive equipment and process. Analyse the same and define energy conservation projects to reduce it further. With this we want to expand this application for accurate, effortless measurement of Water, Air, and Diesel which are important environmental aspects.

first semiconductor production plant, a display fab unit, and a semiconductor assembling and testing unit. The plant will operate across a 1000-acre plot in Ahmedabad, state of Gujarat. According to the Indian government, India’s semiconductor market was worth US$15 billion in 2020 and projected to reach US$63 billion by 2026. Based on this, one can estimate how big this market is and how much demand of semiconductor is rolling out.

The act of being a soldier

In first week of October, Air compressor division’s sales training conference was organised at Lonavala, Maharashtra for the sales & marketing team. This training conference was consisting of various types of trainings like product training, sales skills training, new techniques & industries best practices, team building activities, etc. All technical sessions were held in conference room whereas the team building activities were organised on another resort property which was 10-11 km away from the main resort.

The entire team building program was customised on military based training. The exercises in this training programme were tailored to our requirements. Not only was the team performance stressed, but also the development of each individual’s physical and mental toughness, something you probably weren’t aware before. Corporate ethics and military ethics are very closely intertwined. The motive for military training activities is to ensure that team members are physically and mentally prepared to carry out their duties in combat situations. The purpose of this team building was to encourage teamwork, communication, and collaboration within a group. The goal was to create a cohesive unit that can work together effectively to accomplish common organization goals. This training was done in most scenic place in Lonavala at Della

D.A.T.A Resort. This is India’s first resort which is built entirely on military theme in the lap of nature. This resort is luxurious and completely adventurous. It is likely the first ever resort in India which doesn’t have proper road, no transport facility etc. and that’s where the adventure begins. We started our journey by Army truck & jeeps as those were the only vehicles that can move up that mountain. We had experienced the bumpy ride in scenic beauty of nature with mesmerising views of clouds in mountains, waterfalls, rains, dam back water view & few of wild animals (if you are lucky enough). It took almost 45-50 mins to cover the 8 km distance, but this journey was an unique experience in itself. After arriving at the end of road, we began trekking for 2-3 kms through jungle. And then we reached at resort which was completely surrounded by mountains & situated on the bank of dam backwater.

We started our training with military style and received a warm welcome at resort by coaches who are best of the best Special Operations Veterans from the NSG (Black Cats), Army Special Forces (SF), Marine Commandos (Marcos). Each member of our team was wearing a military uniform. Wearing a military cloth is not just for style statement but what feelings comes to you when we wear military uniform-Pride, patriotism, and a sense of duty.

The activities modules were

based on developing teamwork and leadership skills, improving communication, self-defences training for survival, overcoming fears and fostering a sense of 'camaraderie' and 'esprit de corps'. Also, this activity aided in establishing order and discipline among the group.

Some possible ways in which military discipline could be related to corporate life include developing a strong work ethic, being able to take orders and follow instructions, working well in a team, and being able to handle high-pressure situations. It helps all team members to realise their own hidden potential while facing the challenging task with extreme activity. The team spirit that helps each other to face the fears and take risks like never before.

While facing the difficulties, members learnt how to take initiative and be responsible, and able to make decision more accurately. It enabled each individual to develop skills in self-awareness, leadership, management, and creativity. By the end of the training, each individual took away a clear vision of what they want to achieve and how to accomplish their goals together.

It was a unique, exhilarating, and productive retreat.

We, the batch of GETs, just got confirmed in our respective jobs in the company .So, I decided to reflect on the journey of past one year as Graduate Trainee Engineer and while doing so my mind took over by many things that I experienced throughout the year and words just started flowing.

I went into flash back .The day of selection process. Everything was just new to me. First aptitude test and followed by an interview by HR department. I remember, I was so nervous. I was occupied by mixed thoughts about what would be the questions, would I be able to answer those correctly and many more. But once I entered the room it was pleasant surprise. Interviewers made me so comfortable that I felt, I was unreasonably over worried about the same.

That ease in the room made me relaxed, confident and I could present myself the way I am. I got selected .To earn your first job is always a pride moment to cherish with. One has said appropriately ‘’ Far and away the best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.’ I was going through the same feeling.

My selection was for the Saswad location which I was aware of. I was explained about the location and good things about the same. Work culture, people, food, weather and all. It was all true. Working at Saswad

GET induction was well planned program and was executed neatly. We were inducted through all departments to understand the different functions that company operates in. It was informative and at the same time activity based which helped us to understand better. We learnt many subjects in college but in company you try to assimilate it to the fullest of your ability. When you are fresher, you have tremendous energy to learn many things. You are just like blotting paper. Generally, in training period you observe and learn but at Kirloskar it is something more .Here you observe, learn, adapt, grasp and put into real work. It is really an on

person now. It was not easy for a girl to be on shop floor. From a timid, I have turned a confident professional to take on new challenges.

I have learned many work related aspects, business aspects, work etiquette, meeting etiquette, communication skills, supplier relations and what not. I must credit my team for directing and hand holding on career path. One has rightly said “even if you are on the right track, you will get run over if you just sit there.’

If you have dreams in your eyes and willingness of putting effort, Kirloskar is a preferred choice. Here you learn, explore, teach and reach a destination you really want to. While working for a year now, the work culture here has taught me that you are not your resume but you are your work.

I am so fortunate to be a part of this family which we all will strive hard to take it to glorious heights.

Ansys CFD Training @ ANSYS India

Being a certified professional in Ansys-structural, I have always been trying to solve and optimize the process related issues. Finite element analysis of pressure vessel nozzles was the first ever initiative which resulted in successful in-house FEA of around 90 no of nozzles for Gas Systems projects like GPSIraq , ONGC-India , PEG-Iraq etc. Along with FEA, Lifting analysis of Skid for project Toyo-Nigeria was carried out in-house to check the deflection of Skid member.

Mr. Pravin Nilekar being my reporting manager is always supportive for such activities, identified these skills and to enhance the simulation capabilities in Fluid domain; nominated me for 2-day training session @

Campus To Corporate

An overwhelming experience“CAMPUS TO CORPORATE”. We fortunately got this opportunity to visit Kirloskar Institute of Advanced Management Studies (KIAMS) for three days residential training organized for employees who have recently joined the Kirloskar group. There were employees from other sister companies too like KOEL, KFIL etc. We were excited and thrilled to attend this training but there was nervousness in us before attending this training as about how we are going to acquire all the knowledge about our newly introduced corporate life in just in such a short stretch.

As the training started, Mr. Amit Anand (our trainer) made

ANSYS-India which was majorly focusing on

1) Multiphase flow Simulation

2) Heat transfer Modelling.

The training started with revision of basic concepts of Computational Fluid Dynamics, heat transfer and turbo-machinery. Followed by the in-depth concept discussion and case studies in latest version of ANSYS-21. The training session was informative and gave us hands on experience on at least 4-5 case study problems along with simulations of those.

This training will help us to gain in-house capability for Parametric and topological optimization of separator vessels & heat exchangers which are critical part of our compressor packages, which will in turn improve the overall efficiency and cost effectiveness of the package. I would like to thank Mr. Pravin Nilekar for giving me this knowledge strengthening opportunity with ANSYS India.

y The wheel of life

y Business etiquettes

y Presentation skills

y Stakeholders engagements

All these activities & interactive sessions really took us out of our comfort zones and made us aware of aspects of which we were not aware of. This training session is for sure going to be useful for our professional as well as personal life. It seemed as a grooming

session for us which worked out better than any of us expected.

We were given a stay in the campus itself and I must mention the environment there was so peaceful and blessed with nature’s beauty. This was our get away from everyday work schedule and city lives a much needed break from our routine. This experience introduced us to other side of the Corporate World.

I must say “CAMPUS TO CORPORATE” has been a real confidence booster for me. We entered as a trainee in this organization and now being an

Employee has been amazing. This might be the smallest step by our organization took for us but it was lifetime experience for the new beginners like us.

I am thankful to Kirloskar Pneumatic Company for this humble yet exciting training. I think I am ready for my corporate journey and new challenges.

The Midnight Sun

“Like the midnight sun, we will always remain shining” was the confidence given by the most successful amateur rocketry team in India- the STES Rocketry Team before going to Sao Paulo, Brazil, to participate in the second largest amateur rocketry competition in the world- the Latin America Space Challenge 2022. Here is their journey penned by Atharva Mahesh Shinde, son of Mr. Mahesh M. Shinde and a member of the STES Rocketry Team.

The STES Rocketry Team, short for, Sinhgad Technical Education Society’s Rocketry Team is an intercollegiate amateur rocketry team based in Sinhgad College of Engineering, Vadgaon, Pune that represents India in the Spaceport America Cup held in New Mexico, USA, the largest rocketry competition in the world and the Latin America Space Challenge held in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The team was formed in 2018 with the support and cooperation of Dr. Prof. Dhananjay Khankal and the management of the STES and has been India’s most successful team in these worldwide competitions ever since.

The successful run of the team in the SAC 2018 and SAC 2019 was hurdled by the Covid pandemic. Aasit Vora, a senior team member by the end of the pandemic, took the task of regrouping the team and winning the cup and led the team to a successful LASC 2021, winning the 2nd World Rank in the Rocket Challenge in the target category.

Many senior members passed out of the college and again it was time to introduce new faces to the team. This is when I became a part of the team. The team size expanded to 25, comprising of 20 regulars and 5 alumina and yet again under the leadership of Aasit Vora, the STES Rocketry team was gearing up for the SAC 2022 to be held in June 2022 in New Mexico, USA.

But we faced a challenge which we were not really in our control… VISAs. Even after a lot of praying and hoping, the team faced a disappointment.

So, in May 2022, the team leader took a call to put the ongoing project on hold and shift our focus to the LASC 2022 to be held in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Now, the major challenge in front of us was TIME, because the competition was scheduled from

5th-7th August 2022, giving us just 3 months. And the secondary challenge was managing the college studies and university exams.

Preparations started in full throttle. The team was divided according to the project’s (unnamed at that point) 6 technical subsystems: Aerostructures, Propulsion, Recovery, Avionics, Ground station and Payload.

The Aerostructures. They focus on building and testing the body, partitions, and structure of the rocket like the body tube which is like a container for all the hardware of rocket, nose cone and nose tip which are responsible to reduce air drag so that the rocket goes higher by being efficient, couplers which connect the body tubes, fins that provide more directional stability for the rocket, and nozzle that provides more thrust by managing ejection of propulsion as needed. This year the team made the components by all by themselves with, PVC, 3-d printing, fiberglass, and aluminium.

The Propulsion. They are responsible for the performance of rocket engine motor. Unlike the previous attempts, we made the propellant and motor here at our workshop which makes most of the rocket indigenous. With the motor aiming to take the rocket to 3000 ft (1000m) into the air- the height target that the team was participating in.

The Recovery. They are responsible to bring the rocket back to the ground safely. So that the data inside the rocket can be utilized

and tallied from the data received at the ground station. The team had to perform various ejection tests, main chute and drogue chute tests and had to craft different parts for the successful recovery. Making a successful recovery was a challenge that the previous teams had failed to overcome so a lot of time and money was spent to correct our previous mistakes.

The Avionics. They are responsible to collect data on the rocket through sensors and computers. This time the team used a flight computer from ‘egg timer’ which collects all the required data to monitor. They are also responsible to test different kinds of physical outputs with appropriate sensors, like testing engine thrust by using loadcell or managing parachute ejection using wireless charge ejection.

The Ground station. They are responsible to retrieve the data from the rocket to the ground while the rocket is in flight using antennas and signals to retrieve, manage and graph the data from the rocket.

The Payload. They are responsible to add a suitable experiment for the rocket. this year we were working on a ‘dead-reckoning’ system which is a system that through various sensors like gyroscope, accelerometer and barometric sensors can give us a more precise location of the rocket in flight, as while in flight rocket may reach enough acceleration to surpass the limits of GPS positioning.

Another part of our payload was a CubeSat, to compete in the satellite challenge. The OATMEAL, a 3U CubeSat by STES Rocketry, is a remote sensing CubeSat whose mission is to observe the adverse effects of stubble burning in the northern India over a course of 2 years by capturing hyperspectral images from LEO and transmitting the data to earth.

Now, all these technical teams directly contribute to make the rocket fly. But there is another team which looks after the non-technical aspects like sponsorships, funding, getting permissions, handling social media accounts and many more tasks, the Bizdev.

After about 2 months of consistent hard work, persistent problemsolving-approach, and a never-giveup-attitude, we were ready to fly. The rocket was named the Midnight Sun, because we burnt the midnight oil in the darkest hour to keep shining.

The Midnight Sun was shipped to Brazil on 24th July followed by 5 team members and our faculty advisor. Major part of our team had to stay back in Pune owing to the university exams but our spirits were high and we had to provide online support to our team in Brazil.

Our launch took place at the Cape Canavial on 7th August 2022 4:30 pm BRL…. Not a perfect launch but we had overcome our previous challenge of a successful

recovery. We did face some new challenges but the experience of the competition was invaluable. Results were to be announced after a month, but that evening we won the Best Team Spirit award with about a thousand participants cheering “INDIA, INDIA, INDIA!” It was a spectacle- goosebumps to all of us sitting here, attending the ceremony online.

About a month later, the results were announced coinciding the arrival of Bappa. Competing with 68 teams from 9 countries with over 1000 participants, the STES Rocketry Team’s Midnight Sun bagged the 3rd place worldwide in target category (1000m) and 8th in overall world rank in the Rocket Challenge of the LASC 2022 and the 3rd place worldwide in target category and 6th in overall world rank in the Satellite Challenge of the LASC 2022.

The team’s success was celebrated by the founder of STES Dr. Mr. M.N. Navale by felicitating the members of the team. The times of India Pune published the article about the team’s success.

Going forward, the STES Rocketry team is looking to participate in the SAC 2023 and LASC 2023 under the leadership of Ms. Girija Wale. We have started working on the design of our new project and an ambitious payload research project based on muon detection. Our team’s goal is to make a 100% successful launch at the SAC 2023 and the LASC 2023 and win the 1st prize for India on the world level.

“The journey of Athlete”

My journey into the world of sports began when I was very young. My parents encouraged me to participate in every sports events organized by sports committee during Ganesh Festival as I could remember where I learned to run, to play cricket etc. and developed coordination. From nursery I was normally at the front of most races. That continued in primary school where I represented the school in the Athlete competition but I finished at 4th rank. It was first failure in sports career. The school also participated in a football as well as cricket competition, however we did not make any progress in both tournament and again defeated by strong team. Many teammates were in tears, however, I was quite happy because I got selected in School Team. This positivity and self-motivation inspired me to practice more and become the perfect player. After few months, I became the first person in school who was able to play cricket, football, volleyball professionally. Under my captaincy; my school won the title of Runner up for cricket tournament at district level.

As I transitioned into Higher Secondary School, I had my Physical Education sessions where I was mainly introduced to Athletics but I didn't leave Cricket and football. I practiced approximately for 7-8 hours in day comprising 2-3 hours for

cricket (Morning: 6 to 9), 2 hours for football (After noon: 3 to 5) and 2 hour for Athletics (evening 6.30 8.30). I did not join any coaching classes after my 10th std. for academics & I gave that time for my sports activity. I won many medals in athletics during those two years and also won trophy in cricket tournaments. During this tenure, I learned lot of things like time management, team management, study management etc.

When I joined college for B.E., I was not aware of sports activities, College rules and regulations. I did not participate in any single event at that year and it was quiet disappointing for me. However, I continued to focus on my practice till next year tournaments. Finally, the day came for which I was eagerly waiting. I participated in university athletics competition where all opponents were professional, older than me and had more experience than me. It was my first time where I had participated in open age tournament but I didn’t lose my confidence & gave my 100% for that tournament and won first gold medal. I was very happy as that was my first medal at open age competition & now I had to participate in next level i.e. state level. Unfortunately, during this phase I suffered from jaundice & I could not able to keep well. I was suffering from conditions like high fever, vomiting, headache etc. which were not favorable for sports activity. During that year, I couldn’t participate in state level tournaments. That was very negative phase of my life and I lost 20 Kgs weight on top of it. But I didn't lose my confidence as my focus was to participate in ALL INDIA LEVEL COMPETITION. I took 6 months rest from sports & recovered from jaundice. I had taken permission from doctor to start practicing for tournaments again.

Now, that phase of life was very threatening as I had to start from zero. Not a single parameter was in my favor like physical health, mental health, climatic condition etc. Still I had faith in myself that I can do it & started watching motivational films, thoughts etc. I liked one motivational quote by the late Randy Pausch

“While your journey and its challenges are intensely personal, they are shared by every other athlete with ambition and dedication. When you get frustrated, tired, or down, remember that these challenges are faced by everyone else on the road at some point”. These challenges are described as “brick walls”

So now I had to break this wall & I started practising for athletics competition. I had undergone practise session for 12 hours in day which includes meditation, gym

training, ground training, hill training, and swimming activity etc. After six months of heavy training, I participated in University athletic competition & won many medals. After that I won medal at state level & participated in ALL India inter university athletics competition held at W.B. I didn't win any medal however gave my best during that competition. I was quite happy that my dreams came into reality. I am very thankful to spiritual guru Jagadguru Shri Narendra Maharaj, my family, my coaches, my friends for their support during my negative phase & last but not least Kirloskar Magazine committee for giving such a great platform to share my story.

Discovering the Right BALANCE of Life

Last week, I was having chat with one of my friends and was sharing my perspective on financial planning for the future. I shared my investments and was suggesting something similar with various instruments like death cover, medical insurance, retirement fund, child education fund, and so on. While driving back home, a thought came across to me that, it is good to think about the future and secure it in many ways but at the very next moment I had one more question in my mind, “At what cost have I secured my future?” Am I sacrificing TODAY?

Many times it happens, we plan a lot for our future and comprise on our present, our hobbies, our interests, our likings, etc. We have learned all these things since

childhood by witnessing our elders’ sacrifice. Our parents have made many sacrifices in their life for us & our bright future, may it be a compromise of having our own four-wheeler, may it be compromise

vacations or even very small things like buying clothes for themselves in the festive season and many more. I very well remember I had only 3 vacations in my whole childhood with my family. Now

today, even if they have a good amount of money to fulfill all these desires, that young heart and reliable health won’t be the same. I am not saying that doing good for kids & a family and securing the future by cutting own luxury costs is wrong. The question I had in my mind was about BALANCE. Balance of responsibilities and self-happiness. One should not only focus on living in tomorrow which he/she has to regret one day. When we’ll look back, we should not have that one question in our mind, “What I have done for myself?” The only thing which cannot be brought back in our lifetime is Time. Equal importance should be given to our own happiness and responsibilities towards others & our own future.

Every generation tries to work hard for the next generation and wants to build a good amount of assets in terms of business, money, land, etc. And everyone who gets these from their parents wants to increase the same using their own caliber and hard work for the next generation & so on. So, one more question came to my mind “For whom are we accumulating all these assets if it is kept on passing from one generation to other?” What genuinely matters is being a Happy Soul by doing the things which make you Happy & Cheerful. Every generation also

needs to understand that the next generation is not going to be so useless & hopeless. So all we need is to prepare them enough & capable to stand on their own feet so that we can have enough time to live up to our own desires.

Many times we try to plan our life with concrete timelines; marriage at 28, family at 30, retirement at 45, and then my life my way. Common, one cannot foresee the future so certainly, so don’t be so sure about life and plan so many things in advance. Life is uncertain and full of surprises, so let it be the way it is and enjoy it like an unplanned road trip where you get the way as you move ahead. Planning our own happiness is a myth of life. Don’t deny your friends for a weekend outing, don’t postpone your vacations just because you have planned them after 45, don’t skip marriage ceremonies of your friends & family, be with family in all happy & sad times, the festival means family and friends. Be playful, get enough time for your own hobbies & interests, spend time with your kids, spend time with your parents, and make surprises for your loved ones. You may work hard & earn loads of money but you won’t get this time back; your kid will be no more a child when you’ll turn old, you cannot plan a road trip with

your wife when you’ll turn 50, and you won’t be able to jump in the sea for scuba diving and bungee jumping after you turn 50. Do plan for the future with optimism for whatever enough is required. Everyone needs to stand responsible for their own responsibilities and liabilities. At the same time, always keep in mind that there is no such timeline of our life where we can plan our tough times and happiness independently. All we need is balance and short breaks from our routine. So don’t postpone and schedule your happiness & things you love to do rather find that time & those moments in the same timeline. Think of our childhood when we had managed to excel in our education and at the same time we have very good childhood memories which will last for a lifetime, so is today. Enjoy the present moment & present day so that you won’t have to regret your life. The only thing we need to plan in our life is that “There should not be a single day for which one will have a regret in the future”.

Cyber bullying? And who is a victim of this in today’s world?

In UNICEF terms, Cyber bullying is bullying with the use of digital technologies. It can take place on social media, messaging platforms, gaming platforms and mobile phones. It is repeated behavior, aimed at scaring, angering or shaming those who are targeted. Examples include:

WE THE PEOPLE | 30

y spreading lies about or posting embarrassing photos of someone on social media

y sending hurtful messages or threats via messaging platforms

y impersonating someone and sending mean messages to others on their behalf.

Face-to-face bullying and cyberbullying can often happen alongside each other. But cyberbullying leaves a digital footprint.

We adopted the present-day transitions for going hand in hand with the world technology movement and being a part of it. Still, ramifications would not leave due to a lack of knowledge about the particular things.

A 2020 study by Plan International, involving 14,000 women aged 15-25 from across 22 countries, revealed that 58% of girls in the Asia-Pacific region reported online harassment. Globally, of the girls who were harassed, 14% who self-identified as having a disability and 37% who identified themselves as from an ethnic minority said they get harassed because of it.

It would have a long-term negative impact on our mental health and well-being.

Data on school bullying demonstrates its harmful effects on students’ educational outcomes,

Mental health, and quality of life. Children who are frequently bullied are nearly three times more likely to feel left out at school than those who are not. They are also twice as likely to miss school and have a higher tendency to leave formal and have a higher tendency to leave formal education after finishing secondary school.

Although online violence is not limited to school premises, the education system plays a crucial role in addressing online safety. Concerted efforts must be made to provide children and young people with the knowledge and skills to identify online violence so that they can protect themselves from its different forms, whether perpetrated by peers or adults. Teachers also play a critical role by teaching students about online safety and thus supporting parental involvement.

At a time when COVID19 lockdowns have resulted in online bullying, we must redouble our efforts to tackle this menace. Cyber bullying may occur in a virtual world, but it has a real impact on children’s health. The Union Ministry of Education and UNESCO are committed to ensuring access to safe, inclusive and health-promoting learning environments for all children.

An international organization, UNESCO (The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization is a specialized agency of the United Nations aimed at promoting world peace and security through international cooperation in education, the arts, the sciences, and culture.) in collaboration with NCERT (The National Council of Educational Research and Training) spreading awareness and putting effort on safe online learning in a time of COVID-19.

At last, like a face mask and sanitizer, awareness of cyber bullying is required among all.

RAJGAD TREK (A lesson on Trekking and teamwork)

While on 9th Oct 2022 everyone in our group could feel the exhilarating pain in their bodies, because of the day before, they knew it was worth it. On 8th Oct 2022, the team of Supply chain Management of Air compressor division went on a trekking trip to Rajgad fort in Pune. It is regarded as a very important fort in history as it was the first capital of the Maratha Empire under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Also unlike other famous forts like Sinhagad and Lohagad, which have roads and steps to climb, this doesn’t have that, which made it even more challenging and adventurous for us. To explain our trekking experience, we can divide it into two stages:

Stage One: Planning and Execution

Before trekking any fort, we first have to know about the fort and how we are going to trek. Our team lead by Mr. Dayanand Jadhav sir had planned the road map for the same. They shared videos about the fort and how high it was, then we made plans on how we will be going to the fort and it was decided that we will be going in four cars and as we were 16 people, four people were accommodated in each car. The next stage was the accessories we were going to carry. As the trekking was more foot based, we made a list of the things to carry. The list included: Cap, T-shirts and sports shoes, water bottle (2 litres each), Medicine (as per the need of people) and goggle which was optional. In food, we took some mostly light items like bread-jam, cucumber, dry bhel etc. because we didn’t want ourselves to be stuffed and afterwards puking all over the place. After the accessories were decided the timing of trek was also finalised and we had decided, that we

Stage Two: The Trekking part

Once we reached the place, the weather showed its toll as it wasn’t raining heavily but still it was raining enough to create difficulties while climbing the mountain. We started our trekking at 7:30 AM in the morning. The Rajgarh fort is situated above a mountain and as there is no road, we were advised

will be leaving from our house at Bramha Muhurta i.e. at 3:00 AM – 4:00 AM in the morning. As it was raining on that day, we took our raincoats, umbrellas and towels. We all left from our home at the decided time but one of our team missed the crossing which they had to take from the left of one of the bridge and went 8 km searching for us. But they were able to find us at last and we all left for Rajgad fort and finally reached at 6:30 AM in the morning.

to take big sticks which will help us in climbing the mountain. Some of us did but some of us didn’t. The rainy weather actually made it a bit difficult to climb as we had to be careful on not slipping down. But we finally reached the steps on the fort and realised, that it was even more difficult to climb the steps as

LEADERSHIP ADDRESS | 33

they were very big in size and we were panting from climbing a few steps. Therefore, the experts went ahead and some of us climbed slowly, taking breaks in between so we don’t lose our breaths. After one and a half hour we finally reached the Pali darwaza (or the gate entrance). We went inside the fort and found that after few meters, there was a temple of Lord Shiva and Devi Padmavati. We took a halt near the fort and ate some of the food which we had brought for the journey.

But the real trekking was about to start as we started for Bale Killa. That place is regarded as a safe house from the enemy attacks and the amazing part about going to the Killa was that, it didn’t had easy stairs like the ones we had while climbing the fort. The climb was more vertical and at some points there only stones and no steps therefore, we had to use both our hands and our legs to climb. But as a team we pushed each other to climb further. Many people were having difficulty with sticks and therefore, we tried to leave it with people who went up first. Bale killa could only be climbed with our bare hands and even with all the difficulties; we were able to reach the gates of that killa in half an hour. One thing I realised is that, even though we didn’t know anybody apart from our group, everyone helped each other to climb especially the experts in our team who had trekking experience, helped others to climb, so they can reach the top. But the icing on the cake was the attack by monkeys which we had to face and had to save our belongings especially food from the animals.

While climbing the top was easy, but getting down is the most difficult part of the process, as we had to see the gaps in the boulders and step on that, through which we were able to get down. Once we were all again on the fort, one sight was left i.e. Hathinad (trunk of an elephant). It was a mountain range situated at the backside of the fort and looked like an elephant’s trunk. While half of the people were exhausted, the enthusiastic ones went to the

end of the fort to see that beautiful view. Then we all came back to the fort, had a little snack for energy and started going back to the ground.

The real problem started, when it started raining again and we were not able to go down properly because of the moisture on the ground which created mud and our steps were not sticking on the edges but rather slipping. Two of our trekkers were so much exhausted, that they fell three times as they couldn’t feel their legs but for those two three to four people stayed back and helped them get down. Because of the lack of stairs and stones on the way down, many times people slipped and fall down but everyone on their way up and down helped each other to get back. After a two and a half hour struggle we were able to reach the ground and finally everybody sighed in relief. We started our expedition in the morning at 7:30 AM and finished it in the afternoon at 3:30 PM.

Without any stairs, or rope ways or guides, Team supply chain management of ACD successfully conquered their first fort.

My solo voyage in majestic Sahyadri !!

So, my story begins when 1.5 years ago my friend Deva, got shifted to Hyderabad for a job and I lost my permanent trekking partner. We did 50+ treks together in the last 6 years. That was the time when I actually fell in love with the mighty Sahyadri (Western Ghats region Maharashtra).

I couldn’t hold myself for a long time in the concrete jungle & I decided to continue my voyage solo. And it is unstoppable to date !! Explored countless mountains in the last two years. Literally I haven’t been on the mountain for just 5-10 weekends in the last 1.5 years !

From staying at the edge of the cliff solo in the heavy monsoon to sleeping under a billion stars in the cold, I experienced Sahyadri in all seasons !!

Why do I do solo treks ?

The reason is sum up in the below quote -

TRAVELOGUES | 34
Our team climbing the Bale Killa and the signboard of Rajgad

On the top of the mountain, I enjoy chirping of birds in the early morning,

Enjoy cold thin air flowing beside ears on the peaceful peak, Pure cold water to drink from the waterfall bodies, Sound of flowing water in the full moon at night, the sky with a billion stars and many more !!

From the Bhandardara region in the north part of western ghats till Mahabaleshwar in the south, explored 30+ peaks solo in the 300km band. Most of them were remote locations.

Solo treks increased independence for planning. I learned a lot, what to carry, what not to, the importance of water on the trail, using offline maps to navigate, geography of Sahyadri and many more.

Luckily we have got heritage of

the majestic forts from Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Those helped me to get confidence in the mountains in early treks. Later started with offbeat treks to unknown peaks and still doing the same.

Also recently I have discovered a new hobby for myself , The Rock Balancing. You can enjoy it in the below photos.

I urge everyone at least once, go solo on the peaceful mountain, close your eyes & listen to the mountains which will tell you lots about yourself !

Drop me a message if you need help to plan the same.

Have a safe hiking experience !

Trekking - Somewhere at the helms of Sahyadri ranges

The story started back in June, during monsoon onset and we started exploring places where we can see the natural beauty without limits falls nearby Pune, and I think we don’t need to go far, this is what our handout experience talks about.

Sparing time was all planned, which is the second and fourth Saturday of the month, so that on the next Sunday we can hang out ourselves in bed to be ready for the next day which is obvious, Monday!

After departmental transfer in June, I shifted from Saswad to Hadapsar, staying in saswad for the past three years was a touchwood experience with nature at every moment, even during pandemic situation I feel lucky that I was staying away from the big crowd with peace, which somewhere I was missing at the new place, rushing to the office by bicycle was also missing, still, the change was acceptable at a cost of better future options.

Exploring new places was exciting, sameminded people started getting naturally synch with us for our next exploration plan, this way we got some good minds about the madness of nature and with them our journey started.

Making plans in the mid of the week becomes practice and finalization comes at the end of Friday, then next morning getting ready as per the plan with my fully charged Cannon becomes common, and right from the onset of the journey to visit every little place in between was making our day, sometimes on the ride, sometimes on foot, this mix trekking was really interesting.

Places at the helms of Sahyadri, if I talk about the places nearby to the Pune, then around the saswad we have lots of places which sandwiches with the famous temples, Shivaji Maharaj ancestor’s famous places and many historical places which fall under the archeological survey of India’s list. For every 5-10 km we saw something which is famous and people gets mad to click the photos to that place, so same way we have also done….and keep posted on status and obviously….friends started their comments and they also joined us in our next plan, we started from Purandar fort, Narayanpur temple, Chhota Balaji, Mandhradevi temple, Bhuleshwar temple, Vajra Gadh, Beautiful place Panwadi, Khandoba temple in Jejuri (I’ll never pardon to Anand Vhatkar, because we started from temple to fort by barefoot and at every step, he was saying….Bhaisahab Thoda aur 2 Kadam, and at every step I was looking towards him like an immediate enemy, this way we walked for around 10 km that day).

When people hangout with each other, it creates a bond of friendship that lasts long, this is the best thing which I personally experienced, joining the new team and getting connected with all in such a short span would have been difficult without this initiative. Also, experiencing such environment in pleasant season makes a sense of best thing around us, and we are really fortunate that we are staying in a place which is god gifted with one hand as nature and other as our future.
