The Midnight Memory Walk is back for its 10th Anniversary on Saturday 18th June and we’re planning to make 2016 our biggest, brightest and best yet!

We are looking forward to our brand new circular six or ten mile walk, starting at our new venue - the University of Huddersfield.

The event starts at 10pm on Saturday 18th June with the walk setting off at midnight. The entry fee is £12 per person (£6 for walkers aged 16 and under).

Remember your loved ones It doesn’t matter why you decide to take part in the Midnight Memory Walk; it could be in memory of a loved one; to get fit or simply to enjoy a great night out with friends and colleagues.

Whatever your reason, age or fitness, it promises to be a fun, inspiring and rewarding event, with fellow Hospice supporters coming together for the biggest and best fundraising night of the year.

Once signed up, each walker will receive a walker’s guide as well as a t-shirt to wear on training walks and on the night of the walk itself.

The usual brilliant party atmosphere awaits you, with entertainment, live music and face painting, along with a group warm-up before you lace up and set off on the walk.

When you arrive back at the University of Huddersfield, you will be presented with a welldeserved butty, hot drink and your medal, which we know you will wear proudly.

Angela’s Story

Chris enjoying a day out with grandson Noah

“A few months into Chris’s diagnosis, he was in constant pain. It was very difficult to witness him in such discomfort.

I knew we couldn’t go on like this, so I rang the hospital.

They put us in contact with a community nursing specialist from Kirkwood.

“We never really knew about Kirkwood before this. There is a perception out there that a hospice is just a place where people go to die, so our initial feelings about seeing someone from Kirkwood were of fear.

However, we needn’t have worried.

“When Chris was admitted to the Hospice for the first time, the wonderful staff got his pain under control and made him comfortable. The Hospice team really made an effort to get to know Chris, spending a lot of time talking to him and making sure everything was okay.

“As his condition progressed, Chris was re-admitted to Kirkwood a number of times to receive pain relief. Sometimes his stay

would last two or three days, other times it would be for a week. Each time he was admitted, his pain was managed to ensure he was as comfortable as possible.

“Chris was a very proud man and the Hospice ensured that his dignity remained intact until the very end.”

“On one occasion, our grandson, Noah, came to visit us during the school holidays. Noah was the apple of Chris’s eye – the two of them were inseparable.

“Chris was very poorly and down at the time and had been admitted to the Hospice again.

We weren’t sure how Noah would react to visiting the Hospice, so the staff arranged for Chris to be transported to a friend’s café in Mirfield so that he could see

Noah. Chris spent around an hour with Noah that day and was like a different person afterwards. He had a spring in his step. It was lovely to see, and it was all made possible by the Hospice staff.

“Chris felt completely at home at the Hospice. He would sit outside in the beautiful gardens when the weather was nice and he found it liberating that he could get up at 2am and make himself a drink. He was able to do what he wanted, when he wanted. He said that if he couldn’t be at home, the Hospice was the next best place.

“Chris was a very proud man and the Hospice ensured that his dignity remained intact until the very end.

He was always able to have a shower and a shave when he wanted. The staff would help if he wasn’t strong enough to do this on his own. That meant so much to him.

“Chris chose to die at the Hospice when the time came. He died peacefully and free of pain with all of his family around him.”

Hard work pays off as Hospice opens 21st Shop in Wyke Kirkwood’s latest addition to the high street is already proving a success, with lots of local shoppers having visited to browse the quality used and new items on sale.

The Town Gate unit in Wyke, a former tanning salon, had been without a tenant for many months and the Hospice put in over a month of hard work to turn it into a vibrant and pleasant addition to the Wyke District Shopping Centre.

Retail Development Manager Amanda Burda is proud of how the retail team pulled together to make sure the shop could open during the busy festive period.

She said: “It took a lot of time

and effort to get the place ready to open before Christmas.

“A team of shop managers from our other shops were brought together to make this possible.

“Julieanne from our Marsh shop and Charlotte from Newsome have both helped massively, along with John from our Waterloo branch, Wyke manager Tracey and her deputy Julie. We’ve also had Debbie, our deputy manager from Mirfield on hand.

“The team have done really well and I’m extremely proud of them. We are very excited to be a part of the local community here in Wyke.”

Kirkwood’s established village charity shop in Kirkburton had its official re-opening back in January, after moving to new premises just around the corner.

The Hospice took the decision to relocate its Kirkburton shop to the former Co-op premises at 66 North Road after it became available last year.

Shop manager Maisie Weir hopes it will encourage more shoppers to take a look inside.

“There has been a shop in Kirkburton since 2009, so you could call this our 7 year itch.” joked Maisie on moving just across the road.

“The shop space here is fantastic. We now have a men’s section and a big toy area, which facebook.com/KirkwoodHosp

“We hope to be able to entice a lot more people to visit on a regular basis and raise more money for Kirkwood.”

An impressed Wilf Lunn was asked to cut the official ribbon.

The local inventor, author, TV presenter and former Examiner columnist said: “It was nice to be asked to cut the ribbon.

“It’s great that the shop has come across the road and expanded.

“I have a lot of grandchildren and we all love coming here and looking at the toy section.

They always ask me: ‘Are we going to the chatty shop?’ My wife regularly comes in to buy her books here too. It’s a really popular place.”

New technology helping patients Last year the Hospice was delighted to receive funding for five iPads. The grant also allowed the team to purchase a state-of-the-art communication app, which makes it easier for people to talk with relatives, friends and staff.

For some patients on our InPatient Unit, their symptoms dramatically impact on their ability to communicate.

Funding for five new iPads has opened up a range of new ways for patients to communicate.

For some, the technology offers a simple way to speak to the Hospice team and express their feelings or wishes. For others, video calling apps make it easy to keep in touch with loved ones.

For Graham Wainwright, using an iPad offered him the chance to take his mind off his illness and to relax.’ iPads were a revelation for Graham, who was cared for on the In-Patient Unit for a number of weeks before Christmas.

After being shown how to use YouTube, he became fascinated with documentaries about the moon landings and archaeology.

“Well I have never seen anything like

this.” said Graham. “I’ve got to 78 years old and I didn’t realise there was such a thing.

“When the nurse brought me one I wasn’t sure, but she got it set up for me and showed me what to do.

“I would have been lost without one of these iPads. It really helps to take my mind off my illness.”

“She brought it at about seven one evening and I was still watching it at 12 o’clock that night. They set it up for me so I could just scroll up and down. I can watch videos for hours and run the battery down.”

“When you’re not well, you can watch something like this sitting

in your chair or in bed and while the time away.

“I always like to be doing stuff.

My family are going to get me one when I leave the Hospice.”

Graham also spoke of the generosity of those who donate to the Hospice.

He said: “It’s very nice that someone has donated these iPads and is thinking about someone that isn’t in such a good situation.

“I would have been lost without one of these iPads. It really helps to take my mind off my illness.”

Graham was also keen to express his thoughts on the Hospice and its team.

He said: “My care here has been first class. Everyone goes out of their way to help. I am very priveldged to have been cared for by the Hospice.”

Support and Therapy If you are unwell, everyday tasks can become very difficult. Simple things like making a cup of tea, washing or even getting dressed can seem impossible. Kirkwood Hospice’s Support and Therapy Team are here to help, offering a range of services to help people adjust to the physical and emotional limitations of their illness.

Being diagnosed with a potentially life-threatening illness can be a hugely worrying experience for anyone.

Living with an illness affects the whole person, making everyday life more challenging.

Physical changes are not the only symptom of a life-threatening condition. They also cause emotional distress, which can impact on confidence and mood.

At Kirkwood Hospice, our dedicated Support and Therapy

Drop-In and find out how we can help It’s really easy to find out how Kirkwood’s Support and Therapy team can help you. Our Drop-In Days take place each Wednesday and Friday from 9.30am to 5.30pm.

You don’t need to be referred by your doctor or health care provider to come along. You don’t even need to let us know in advance. All you need to do is come down and speak to us.

You’ll be given a warm welcome by our experienced staff and will have the opportunity to sit down with a nurse to discuss your condition. We will then let you know the ways in which the Support and Therapy Team can help you or your carer. We will also arrange for you to access services which we think will help you.

Team make it easy for people to access a range of services and provide advice and support to help with any emotional, physical or spiritual concerns a person may have.

The team also offers a number of courses for carers, which are designed to help people caring for a relative or friend with a potentially life-limiting illness.

We encourage anyone who thinks that the Hospice may be able to help to get in touch with the team or to visit one of our Drop-In Days.

Day Therapy Day Therapy gives you the chance to access Support and Therapy services on a regular basis.

We may invite you to attend after a visit to one of our DropIn days or you may be referred by your doctor or a health professional involved in your care.

If you are invited to attend, our Support and Therapy Team will discuss a plan of care with you which meets your individual needs. Initially, you will be invited to attend for 12 weeks, after which you’ll meet the team again to discuss how you are feeling.

Some of our services are detailed below. Please get in touch if you think they might be suitable for you or someone you know.

Getting to the Hospice If you, your loved one or a friend would like to access Drop-In or Day Therapy but would find it hard to get to and from the Hospice, we can arrange for you to be picked up by a volunteer driver or in our mini-bus - just let us know!

A 5K obstacle course at Crossley Farm in Mirfield for adrenaline junkies of all abilities!

Climb over huge hay bales, clamber in and out of trenches, tackle monkey bars and plunge into ice-cold waters before hurling yourself down a 100m water slide!

The T3 Farm Challenge is not a race, but a team challenge that enables participants of all abilities to experience challenging obstacles in a safe environment, whilst being cheered on by hundreds of spectators.

The User Forum is a quarterly group meeting. We encourage you and those important to you to tell us what you think about the services we offer at Kirkwood Hospice.

The forum takes place in a relaxed and informal environment where we talk openly and honestly about a range of subjects. As such, anything you say at the User Forum is confidential.

To help you feel comfortable about speaking openly and honestly about the services you, your family or friends have

received from Kirkwood, our sessions are run by members of the team who aren’t involved in day to day care.

We take feedback very seriously and use it to decide how well our services are working from the point of view of those that use them. Your comments help us to plan for the future and make our current services better.

My Share & Care Group Experience Ann Berry was the main carer for her husband, John, before his death last year. In her own words, she describes how the Share & Care Group at Kirkwood Hospice helped her to cope more effectively.

“I attended the Share & Care course at Kirkwood Hospice. The three sessions included topics such as: Living with Fatigue, Developing Coping Skills, Helping People to Move Safely, How to Protect Vulnerable Skin, Nutritional Needs and Eating on a Budget.

“I found the first session, which included mindfulness and resilience techniques, the most useful as it helped me to realise that I had all the resources already to cope. That re-assured me.

“Share & Care was my first experience of Kirkwood Hospice.

I was made aware of the course after receiving an invitation in the post and I attended all three sessions. @KirkwoodHospice

“My husband, John, attended the Kirkwood Hospice Drop-In which was in the same building - whilst I went to the Share & Care Group. He found Drop-In very useful and everyone welcomed him to the group. He was able to have a drink and a piece of cake and talk to other people.

Sunflower memories appeal

In return for a donation, we will write the name of your special person on a striking sunflower plaque. Your sunflower will then be ‘planted’ in the Hospice gardens along with many others, forming a lovely carpet of yellow blooms.

On Saturday 25th June between 11am-3pm, you can pop by to view your sunflower on display,

Tickets are £22.50 per person including a three course meal.

Now in its third year, Kirkwood Hospice’s Sunflower Memories Appeal is a beautiful way to celebrate the life of someone you love.

Usually by spending time with family and friends. If the mood takes me, I take to my bike and go for a long ride to clear my head.
